as above...i'm looking for them in the price range of not more than $250 i've been told that ATH A900 and MS-1 fits the bill..senn's hd590 was also mentioned. i'm looking for a pair of cans that have warm mids, quite a deep bass, and a nice soundstage. they should be of a semi-opened or closed design, i don't know which is better. (does a semi-opened can have a wider soundstage?) i'm currently using a pair of um1s and i kind of like the mids though the bass and the soundstage are lacking. any input would be greatly appreciated =) |

Open cans are generally considered to have a more "airy" and spacious sound and soundstage than closed cans. Now, are these going to be for home listening, or for portable use? I ask that because certain 'cans - notably the Sennheiser HD590 mentioned need a good headphone amplifier to sound their best. I have the HD590, and was about to trade it in because I was dissatisfied with the sound. Till I discovered a tube amp that worked wonders with it! Great bass, and lovely, warm mids that made female vocals sound oh, so good! I played some Lisa Ono & Smoma tracks, and their husky voices sounded really fantastic.Just to note in passing that none of my portable amps worked well with the HD590. No synergy there, I guess. Others may disagree

yes and no... Compared to IEMs and closed headphones, semi-open cans usually present a wider soundstage, but compared to fully open cans, they tend to have a little less. You might want to elaborate as to what usage you are going to put them to? As you are comparing your portable IEM to full sized cans, its difficult to actually recommend anything properly. Of the few that you mentioned, ATH A900 is closed while MS-1and senn's hd590 are opened...semi open cans are not exactly very common in my experience, but I know the pre 2005 DT880 I have are semi-open. And as far as Im concerned, it sounds as open as any fully opened headphones(as in sound leaks both ways easily). So, are you going to use them portably? Does it matter if its big? Does it matter if sound leaks(both ways)? |

If you're looking for bass, MS1 might not fit your bill perfectly. Well even my MS Pro could do with abit more jazz. You mentioned soundstage and bass. What other traits do you want? DT880 might be too analytical for some. |

HD555 or 595? I am using a 555 paired with the xtra. I feel it is able to handle jazz rather well. |

I think A900 have the bass and good soundstage. I dunno about HD590, but I have a HD580 which is good for vocals too, but need to be amp. It can be gotten on used market for a good price, HD580 that is. |

I will recommend the A900 as well. I have the same headphone, for vocals and jazz it's good. I used to have the DT880 2006, though it has bigger soundstage but the vocals are not as warm. However, A900 is a bit laid back, it will make fast jazz sound a bit slow. |

Wouldn't the DT880 2006 version overshoot the budget?
I'd go with the A900 if you prefer closed, but it gets rather hot if you are not in a air-conditioned room after some time. They're huge too, and probably wouldn't be able to be used outdoors. |

sorry for the late reply! i'm more inclined towards bossa nova and jazz vocals, but i would like to have a certain amount of bass. i heard the a900 was a tad muddy though. regarding the amps, i'm not planning to make a purchase right about now due to budget restrains =p oh i'm using the headphones for home use. as mentioned earlier i would prefer not to have too much sound leakage as i'm used to the isolation that iems provide. however i wouldn't want to be compensated for the wide soundstage that i desire. so, my priorities are as follows in descending order: 1) warm vocals 2) wide soundstage 3) comfort 4) tight bass 5) beauty (the a900 looks abit big and ugly imo heh) oh and not forgetting the budget! around $250 thanks guys! |

Just want to highlight that the issue of soundstage is tricky. Your Interconnects will limit the extension of the soundstage & body of the music. Maybe if you could extent your budget, you could probably get close to what you desire.

Hmmm, Warm Vocals, Wide Soundstage, Tight Bass, Comfort, and good looks....By adding a zero behind ur budget, you could have the L3000. It fits pretty closely to what you have described... But yeah, back to topic, you might want to give the HD595 a try. I felt that the AD2000 was very very good for bossa nova and Jazz because of its airyness. Maybe you could ask around for headphones at the $250 price range that offer that level of airyness. Cause I think you've got the perception of airyness and soundstage a little mixed up. Drop by my place after work say this thursday or what and I'll give u an audition. And btw, how's the DT880 you borrowed from YF? |

I think its rather hard to find a closed back headphone for isolation to offer airyness. More suggestions anyone? |

Hm no offence here. You want something good, pretty and cheap (in audiophile level), I think quite hard to find. There's no perfection, maybe the exception of the orpheus? So I think you gonna try audition different cans, and see which one fits closer to your taste. |

ok relax guys. Heres some clarifications. Razer misused chaych's nick and name and this is 1 mistake he had made. chaych a.k.a chay him (the real 1) has told me that he didnt instructed nor use the account of Razer to type out such. so all the claimings that Razer = chaych is a mistake. |

yes but what we all are trying to achieve when we're buying headphones is to find something that fits us well. don't we? and of course, as near as to what we personally think as perfection. no offence taken =) by the way..shiro, how do the midranges score on the a900? Omg, wait maybe I didn't make my self clear. I was telling dog fight, hey! Its me, Razer! Then i forgot to add a comma after that, to tell him, if he wanna know Chay Him, he's called CHAYCH on this forum...My bad for bad punctuation...
See that? I stated, chayhim's chaych here. Btw, chaych, I don't understand what you mean by old habit dies hard but to me, it sounded like an offensive post and a tinge of arrogance was felt. <_<
I seriously don't get why you're asking about the midrange of the A900 when you told me you've heard the A900 and didn't quite like some aspects about the sound. Like what others have said, your requirements are a little hard to fulfil given your low budget. I suggest you try out the HD555, HD595 and maybe again, the A900 before deciding on your purchase. I personally find the HD595 a little harsh. Maybe it was due to it being brand new and not yet burned in? [Moderator Advise: This is a reminder. Please refrain from SMS-speak and short-forms. If you added about $100 to the budget, the K601 comes to mind. Otherwise, I can't really think of any headphones. A Grado (Leaks quite a bit of sound though) at the price point would be the SR125 (which is decent, but lacks the expansive soundstage). Audio Technica's AD series? |
