I had the chance to listen to the Beyer DTX50 canal phone for about 45 minutes this evening. I was using the Apple Nano 8gb 2G with the Portaphile amp and Phoenix interconnects. I tried the Beyers amped and un-amped. 1st impression was that the bass was a bit overwhelming - well, the packaging did mention "enhanced bass response" Mids are biased towards the warm side, as can be expected. Clarity was OK, but not in TC20 territory
Fortunately, the bass does not muddy up the mids and the highs, as some overly bassy earphones are prone to do.In fact, the sound signature reminds me a lot of the Sony EX90LP, but the bass of the DTX50 is a lot more pronounced, probably because of the better seal, compared with the earbud style of the Sony EX90LP. Comfort, seal and isolation was excellent. I was using the default medium tips, and I felt no discomfort during the time of the audition. My personal opinion was that the DTX50 is good for rock, dance, techno and other kinds of bass-heavy music. Bass heads should be pleased. The warm mids also suit certain vocals tracks well. The sonic quality probably does not suit classical, new wave or instrumental music. Soundstage is a little restricted and there is insufficient treble extension to create the sense of space & separation between instruments. When ran through the amp, the bass became tighter and less "flabby". Other than that, it sounded pretty much the same The above is just my personal opinion - your impressions and mileage may, of course vary.

Nope, the Sony EX90 may look like canal phones but the design is neither "here nor there". The tips are supposed to go into your ear-canals, but the ear-bud style outer shell prevents it from going too deep at all. Isolation is understandably lousy, and is not suitable for work commute at all In fact, I don't think Sony ever mentioned "isolating" in its marketing of the EX90

I got all excited until scanfiend mentioned 'soundstage is a little restricted' and 'insufficient treble extension'. Sounds like my um1s, I think I'm gonna have to give this a miss. |
