sennheiser PX100 vs audio technica ES5

Dear Headphonephiles

I am looking at a upgrade headset for my Samsung MP3 YPT-55.
Since it is merely an entry MP3 player, i am looking at a 100 bucks headphone. Reviews are strong for Senn PX100 & AKG 81 but not Audiotech ES5. When i try auditing the headphones in courts megamall recently, i noticed that the PX200 (closed pack version of PX100) had hardly any bass even though the highs & mid are good. PX100 gives very loose bass which make the sound a bit muddy but still better bet than the PX200. I found the Audiotechnica excel in the bass which is deep & tight but the highs are too sharp for my likings but still revealed more details than the senn. I regretted not having the chance to test out both for vocal weights but read in some reviews that ES5 is a complete lack-down in the vocal category. Hope some gurus here can gove some comments on this. I am into instrumentals & new age & jazz.

Thanks
Marc

In the Sennheiser range for under 100 bucks, there are the HD 212 Pro and eH250 (closed backs). These 2 headphones are full sized supra-aurals which does not appeal very portable. However if that is not an issue for you, you might want to consider.

For the AKGs, you have the K 26P that you might want to take a look at.

Have fun!
If impressing/being impressed is how it gets you around, forget it. It is not gonna happen.

Hey! I actually own a pair of ES5s and I must say that they are very decent cans, in fact I prefer them over the Px100/Px200 on any given day and any given genre of music. :D

Just my 2 dollars worth.

Dear Ryner

Wat kind of musics are you into? I guess ES5 will work well for pop & rocks but for vocal & jazz, i really dont know how it fair. Will audit again the ES5 for the vocal weight.

I listen to almost everything. The best way is still to listen to the ES5 for yourself before deciding on your purchase.

Thanks Ryner for the advice. BTW does your ES5 trebles got smoother after run-in? Its difficult to conclude the new ES5 on the spot since it may not have been run in yet. So its best to check with owner like you

Yes, the highs were smoothened down after some running in and the bass cleaned up a little as well.

Hey... I found someone who likes the ES5 too... great....

I like the mids and highs of ES5, though the bass is not very strong, but it's decent and can be deep too...
Sources: iAudio X5L / Sony Discman D-NE730
Interconnect: No idea, the guy who sold it to me said it's custom made...
Amp: XTRA X-1
Earphones/Headphones: CrossRoads MylarOne & Audio Technica ATH-ES5

Hi Folks

On careful listening again at Hung Bros, i found the ES5 actually dont sound right with regards to the vocal & some instruments. The mid though sweet is very light. Bass is fast & deep but overall music presentation lack depth. K26P sound more real but less airy and exciting.
PX100 vs PX200 also reveal very different cans between the two. px100 though gave better bass extension but pace is a bit too slow & also is the most muddy among all headphones i had tested. PX200 high & mid is just right but lack the low bass extension which is highly needed in the jazz & rock music. So my search for a suitable headgear is still on-going... my ideal headgear will be the bass & pace of ES5 together with the mid & high of the PX200, Any audiophile hear came across such goodie in the portable headphone market??

Dear Norseman

I have no opportunity to try a modded K81P. Just had a listen to the Grado SR60 & 80. Seem to be getting nearer to what i want. Clear sweet sound with full bodied vocal and decent bass.
Wonder how the MS-1 sound vs the SR60?

Its k81dj actually. If you like the grado sound, ms1 is a good choice if you don't need isolation.
