A noobish question about Stax...

Is it possible to use Stax Earspeakers on non-Stax amps? I know the plug on Stax phones aren't 3.5mm or 6.3mm ones, but is it possible to somehow fit a Stax compatible output jack on non-Stax amps?

IIRC, the voltage required for electrostatics are very different, hence no you cannot unlless its one of the Singlepower customed amps.

I guess thats why they always come with their own amp units. :xmas:

Thanks for the fast reply. Yup I heard that Electrostatics consume power closer to that of full sized speakers. Such a disappointment, as I was hoping to buy just the Earspeakers and run it off a desktop amp...

There is also another amp from HeadAmp which is the GSX, famous for being able to push the HE60's (Baby Orpheus) potential all out and make it shines.

IIRC its not about the power consumption, but something about the voltage swing(?) not being enough to drive the diaphrams or something...

but seriously, I believe the accompanied amp units should be adequate isnt it? the last time I checked those customed amps were in the region on several USD$Ks...

Actually the purpose of me using a non-Stax amp is not to improve the SQ, but to save money :P

I'm not Rayner after all. ;) I wanted to get just the Earspeaker and maybe just buy some second-hand desktop amp or something. Really want to get into the world of Stax.

My friend, even it is possible to do so you will not get the full potential of the STAX.
And you might even complain that STAX isn't that great after all.

If you intend to move towards STAX, try something within your budget.
Or even better go for an audition, you may/may not like it in the end.

electrostats are in the league of their own.

You need special amp to drive electrostats.

The consumption is not as big as the speaker amp, because with the high voltage, the current must be very very low, in the other hand, speakers need amperes of juice to drive, thus consumption is high. The conclusion is, if there's high volatge and high current, it is as good as sitting on an electric chair. hahaha.. just kidding..

to use STAX, you can get KGSS or Blue Hawaii.

FYI, STAX amps are the cheapest out there for electrostats compare to the Gilmore (exclude customized amp from China)
