Hey there guys. I'm looking at a few interesting vintage AT cans up for sale on EBay. There's this guy that's selling a whole bunch of them and I'm wondering if any of you guys might know about it.

Here's some of the more interesting specimens:

AT-714

A dynamic + electret headphone, going for S$180 including shipping. Kinda like an AKG K340, but the low price of this makes me a bit apprehensive.

Next up:

AT-706

A more expensive electret headphone. Going by that dictum that you get what you pay more, the sound from these cans should be decent. A cheaper way to sample the electrostatic sound?

P.S For those wondering what are electret drivers:

"Electret (formed of elektr- from "electricity" and -et from "magnet") is a dielectric material that has a quasi-permanent electric charge or dipole polarisation."

From Wikipedia.

"The required electrical charged is permanently placed on the diaphragm during manufacture."

From the supplied AT brochure.

To summarize, I would say they work on the same principle as classical electrostatics, except that they don't have the disadvantage that electrostatics have; you have to let the electrostatics warm up for them to achieve their utmost potential. Electret drivers should also avoid the higher power requirements that electrostatics are so infamous for.

Hope someone knows something about these phones. The AT-714 looks good on paper and I might spring for one. :P

I once asked about this, and electret (not electostat) materials are prone to deteriorate over time. I've seen one Audio Technica Electret ATH-7 headphone, and it sounds extremely muffled and soft, even if it's tuned to the max.

Unless you are thinking of putting this in a drybox everytime after usage, then buy one for us! :naughty:

Thanks for the replies guys...

I shall take your input seriously TopGun ... I don't think I'm party to encasing my phones in a airtight box with Silica gel after use :P

My parents told me yesterday that Civil Servants were supposed to get a bonus or something, and apparently NSF are included as well... I haven't had any extra money deposited into my account, but if it does, I might get a AT-703 for myself as a nice little Christmas gift...
