Hi guys, I have just took up a new hobby, that is being an audio enthusiast, very recently, in the last 2 months maybe? I heard alot about IEMs and my only good, which I considered proper, set of headphones was a 80SGD, Sony MDR-V300 "Studio Monitors" which I got 2 Christmas's ago. Now, with slighly more dough to spend, I am contemplating on getting a set of IEMs. After reading up alot on them, I realized that they were far better than headphones that use Active Noise Cancelling and have decided to get a good pair of IEMs that will LAST and will prevent me from getting any cases of updradetis (or something like that). I have looked throught many pairs, namely the CK7(I hated it as it was too warm, and too basey), the Shure e3c (which offered the best sound isolation but I guess all IEMs offer it as well), the UM1, ER-6 (I was really impressed with it) and some others that I couldnt remember. To start off, my budget is 300SGD and nothing more. I would like to get an IEM that does NOT require an portable amplifier but it would be nice if I could use it with my Nakamichi Amplifier 1. I have heard the Etymotics ER-6 and really like it as if offered the greatest clarity and all and then I found it on Amazon.com for only 80USD which is within my budget but in fact, the price is not really what I intend to spend on a good pair - I was prepared to pay MORE. So I found that the Etymotic Research ER-4P which costs 160USD. That was fully in my budget and I am prepared to pay for it. But I have some questons and doubts I hope you guys could clarify to help me better understand what I am buying and whether I, as a person new to such great audio equipment, should get such an expensive pair of IEMs. Okay, to get to the point: Comfort I see that the ER-4P has only the foam (not to my liking) and flange tips. I like the flange tips but have a preference to the Shure silicon earbuds that does not come with the ER-4P as it offers better sound isolation(IMO). Is it possible to use any ol' Shure earbud with the ER-4P? And also, are most eartips compatible with each other, or are they usually unique to the earphone it was supplied with? Sound In your point of view, how would you rate the ER-4P as compared to the ER-6? I really liked it because of the clarity and all, and the bass was not that bad like how I heard on some reviews. It also sounded, to me, the most vivid amongst the IEMs tested. Would paying double for the ER-4P be worth it or would getting the ER-6 be just as good? Is the ER-4P miles ahead than the ER-6? I wouldnt want to be in a situation 6 months later where i have to sell the er6 to get that er4p -.- I also heard of the P2S converter from Etymotic that essentially converts the ER-4P into the ER-4S by just using that little cable? Are there any places I can get it for a cheaper price? On sgheadphones.net, I heard that Topgun has some?
Also, I heard that the ER-4S Sounds better than the ER-4P? Or is it that both IEMs sound the same when doing a comparison when (er4p+p2s converter)=(er4s), both amped? Or is the er4s itself that have better sound quality or something? Are the ER-4P easy to sell and popular among the audiophile groups? I am worried that if say after 6 months down the road, I decided to use my ipod stock earbuds as I need cash to buy other gear, would the ER-4P be saleable? Who currently in Singapore has te er4p? I would really like to know how popular this iem is among us. Lastly, and most importantly, if I liked how my music sounded on the ER-6, would I like it more on the ER-4P? Or would I dislike it because it sounds totally different? Is the ER-4P similar to the ER-6 but way better in terms of Sound Quality, or does the ER--4P have a totally different sound signature? Thanks alot in advance guys! Gerald ***Ok, so my ER-4P is arriving tomorrow and I am still deciding where and what to listen to it. Should I use my Dad's tower of power to listen to? Or should I listen to it on my meager hifi setup? Should I listen to the Bee Gees - One Night Only? Or should I listen to Jamie Cullum. Okay, I would like to know how to burn it in... Should I use a de-magnetizing sweep or something? Do I Have to buy reference CDs or some that are specialized in burning in IEMs? Or can I just play some old CD looped, and for 400 hours? Thanks guys! |

Wow ! What along post hehehe. I am in the same boat as you. My advice ... go for the er4p straight and you won't turn back. OK maybe you'll wonder about the sound signatures of other brands of IEM but at least you know you have the flagship of Etymotic (currently lah) ER6 is good but not as good as the er4, naturally. I have been with the er6 for only 6 months bro, and now I am hit by upgradetitis again. So don't waste the cash, head straight for the big gun. Money now hard to earn heh heh. |

Hi Gerald, First to begin with; Welcome to the forum! Comfort: Regarding your question on ER-4P on Shure flange : Yes, It can be done. Westone, Shures and Etymotics may share the ear tips, open for variety. Sound: [It would be best for TopGun to answer to this part] However, you may want to share the genre of music you commonly listen to. Maybe we could advise you further from there. The P-S (P to S) cable could be ordered from Jaben upon request. Do enquire him if you are interested. The cable is also known as the Resistance cable. You will require an amplifier to drive the monitor if attached to this cable. It is commonly used to drive off from higher powered sources and for monitoring application. Sound quality will alter slightly, resulted from the norminal load applied. You might notice the reduction in noise(least sensitive), smoother in sound reproduction in some music. I think TopGun is the best person to advise you on this In-Ear Monitor. Right, TopGun?

You betcha! Hi, Gerald! Welcome to our small (but constantly growing) community of music loving people! Okay, I'll answer your questions in series of quotes and replies. Well, here goes nothing!
Well for starters, I only found that the foam tips were comfortable to me and they isolate better than the tri-flange tips as well. But alas, I had weird shape ear canals so I opted for the custom earmolds route and by so far, I have not regretted my decision! Regardings to your question, please remember that the ER-6/ER-6i, Shure and also Westone have different nozzle sizes (different diameters) hence the size comparison would go like this : Shure (biggest) > Ultimate Ears > ER-6/6i > Westone > ER4P However, the Shure grey flex tips are expandable and they fit well on the ER4P also, but do keep in mind that the UE Biflange doesn't, and a little modification* has to be done (not to mention the sacrification of a tri-flange as well ) in order for you to fit larger diameter tips. *I'll post this modification soon enough
Well, I'd rate the ER-6 as one notch below the ER4P/S. Just for your information, the ER-6 is actually a redesigned driver that was meant to be a cheaper alternative to it's big brother the ER4P. So it should maintain the ER signature while keeping the cost down. IMHO, I would say that the ER-6 lacks certain qualities that the ER4P has, but it isn't bad from it's price point. It lacks the extension of bass and the treble superiority that the ER4P has over the ER-6. This doesn't mean that the ER-6 sucks in it's treble prowess, it's just that the ER4P fares better in this section. Also, there's a bit of warmth and musicality in the ER4P compared to the ER6. Again, this is just my personal opinions Worth it? You bet. (to me :P)
Yes, this is because the ER4P and ER4S both use the same drivers, same enclosures and same cable material. The only difference is that the cable impedance in the ER4S is 100 Ohms while that in ER4P is 27 Ohms. According to Etymotic engineers, adding the impedance cable effectively makes it an ER4S. However, if you still insist on the ER4S, let me tell you this.. - more expensive - cables from the grey pod to the earpiece are flat, non braided = more microphonics - higher impedance means harder to drive from low power sources Getting a ER4P + P-S Cable is the best solution. Using it with my Discman(s) is truly easy to drive as the output power of the older generations are like from 5-10mW.
Okay, this part I'm not too sure as I haven't tried the ER4S thoroughly before, but I believe it's the same. Using the P-S cable with my ER4Ps, I've only noticed a slight increase in bass slam, slightly reduced treble 'sparkle' but the floor noise was lower due to the higher impedance.
Well, let's say the ER4P is an acquired taste, same like Durians. Normally, I'll say that if you sell it at a nice price, it wouldn't be too hard to sell, but if you are trying to sell at cost at what you paid, it wont be easy though. Hope I helped. It took me damn long to type this.

My analogy in describing the difference between the ER4 and 6 is this. With the ER6, you're sitting in the monitoring room of the studio, listening to the band playing through the signal chain...microphone-mixer-speakers. The sound is still good, but veiled because of everything in the signal path. With the ER4, you're actually sitting in the recording studio listening to the band play. You can hear everything.... so if the band sucks and the singer is flat, you'll hear it without the benefit of the sound engineer putting in EQ/tone correction. The E3C is akin to sitting in a car, listening to the CD of the band that was playing in the studio. However, before you write off any model, I would recommend you go and listen to them first. Also, an increase to the $300 budget might help. It would put you in range of the E4C and the UM2 for consideration as well. [edited] At the end of the day, its always preferable to buy the best you can afford (even if it means going above your budge). Because if you skimp, you might find yourself spending more when you want to upgrade. eg, buying the ER6 and being discontent and upgrading to the ER4 within 6 months. |

Do remember that if you encounter any problems, shipping to USA wouldn't be cheap though Would u pay for an uninsured postage that goes by sea freight and takes weeks to arrive in US just because it's cheap? Well, if I were you, I'll be damn scared they will get lost in postage so I will always use DHL/UPS. And shipping one way to Etymotic is maybe let's say in the S$55-70 region per trip. |

Hi TopGun, Finally got logged in now, thanks for the help... You should make it a sticky... Regarding the warranty problems, I am confident that SingPost will not mess it up. It costs about 15SGD to ship it to the USA and registered/insured post costs say 13.50SGD. Less than 50SGD, any problems I claim from SingPost... Its not that expensive. Etymotic will ship back to Singapore FOC. *Addition: Also, Jaben sells them for about 450+ SGD which is almost 175% more expensive. I would happily take the risk as I make a savings of 200SGD... Now guys, I'm staring blankly at the Amazon Screen... Deciding whether to make this hell of a hefty purchase. I'm only 16 btw, so 270SGD is ALOT of money to me.. haha. Please give me the final words of advise please guys! Thanks. Gerald |

I got my ER4S thru Amazon. No problem with delivery at all. Only a small parcel. Also the IEM is very well made, unlikely to give problems. Anyway, it is my favorite since the day it was dlivered 2 months ago and you can see I have quite a few other reputable headphones and IEM to listen to. Just click buy, you won't regret buying from US. The local price is ridiculous high. |

sorry to burst your bubble, but the ER-4 is probably the *most* fragile IEM on the market. I had quite a bit of trouble with mine, with 2 broken stems over the course of 3 years. at $90 USD a pop to repair, it ain't cheap. local price is so 'high' as the dealers here do not get ANY discount. amazon buys enough in bulk to get them a very competitive price cut (similar to how they slash prices on books), and even the more established independent dealers like Headroom can offer them cheaper as they have a 'reliable' sales output and get certain 'loyalty' discounts on pricing. Frankly if there was only one Ety dealer in Singapore and we all bought from them at full price, in about 2 years the local price would begin to drop ... There *is* a difference between the ER4S and ER4P with adaptor cable, but it is quite subtle. The adaptor cable does a good job smoothing out the different impedance values, but has a slightly lower bass 'floor' than the standard 4S, whereas the 4S has a slightly easier time with sibilance on female vocals. YMMV, but thats what I remember from auditioning them both a while ago. The ER4P was my first IEM about 4 years back, and I *loved* the sound. Still do as a matter of fact. The main strength of this IEM is the extreme presentation of detail in any recording. Its as if fingerprint dust has been blown over all the nooks and crannies so you can see every single imprint and impression made - even if you'd rather not It is, however, an 'unnatural' clarity, and I really had to spend time 'coming down' from the soaring, piercing highs of the Ety sound to the more natural, relaxed detail of the Sensaphonics. Its quite an 'addictive' sound signature
So to sum up - Pros : Excellent detail Fantastic treble, particularly well suited to female vocals and most instrumental music *Relatively* inexpensive introduction to IEMs Plays well with amps - e.g. paired with SR-71, I noticed a widened soundstage, increased bass response, and more 'solid' presentation overall. Versatility with optional P-to-S adapter Cons : Weak bass Not the most responsive IEM - fast paced electronica and dance music have a slight lag with transients Emphasis on vocal, sometimes at expense of backing tracks on poorly mastered recordings Stem drivers can be quite fragile No clear upgrade path - if you like the signature, theres no better one to get Hope this helps ! Sorry if it comes a little late, but I was out of town

Hi guys, I have just placed my order with Amazon.com at around 0000, Singapore Time. I'm really excited and am continiously pressing the F5 button at the Order Status screen. Haha, really cannot WAIT to get it, I have waited so long to decide which to get and I finally did. Thanks guys for your support and help rendered for me making my decision! I really appreciate the effort! I posted the same thread on sgheadphones that has 20000members but I did not even get a response close to what I got here which has only 200odd members? haha. Once again, thank you!! Gerald
I really take care of my stuff very well and when you say stem, does it mean the little mozzle with the filter in it? If thats the case, then wouldn't if be classified as defective and I could send it back to Etymotic Research to get a new pair? Please correct me if i'm wrong because I'm totally new to such things.
This is the main reasons why I got this. If I get the best of the best of the best, IMO, then my only upgrade would be future Etymotic IEMs which would be released not so soon IMO again because they have been selling the er4 series for such a long time and the ONLY modification done was to change the style and colour of the parts. I am glad that I went ahead to buy the er4p and not the er6, as I would be saving money over the long run. THANKS GUYS FOR HELPING ME MAKE THAT DECISION!!
Nope, its ok as other fellow members has helped me with this. Thanks! |

well, I guess you cannot complain when its almost the only "company" that offers such a service conveniently. Since amazon offers free US shipping, total shipping charges should still be considerably cheaper than international shipping. Sometimes they do cockup some orders tho...guess they need more manpower... btw Gerard, the most plausible "upgrade" for the er4 now is to make a pair of customs to go along with them, that is if the rest of your rig has been taken care of... |

on a side note, I actually order from amazon at least once every two months. I order directly from them rather than go through vpost. In fact, I order on standard shipping yet I usually receive my orders within 10 days. The trick is to order on monday nights (since I work nights, this is easy for me), which translates to monday US time. I suppose I've been lucky, but the shipment always arrives the following Thursday. I've actually tried expediated shipping, which was hella lot more expensive, and the shipping took the exact same time as standard to arrive, so I figured why waste the extra money. It doesn't always arrive so quickly, but I'd say 7 out of 10 times. Congrats on your purchase Gerald. It is a good buy. When Monkey God talks about the stem being fragile, it's because that is the part seeing the most 'abuse'. Basically when you change the foamies/flanges/filters, the stem will see the action. And with it being so thin, the constant 'friction' can have some adverse effects. A reasonable fix might be to get custom earpieces done for them. Also, regular ear cleaning. That would reduce the number of times you have to remove/connect a new earpiece. btw, Gerald, I'm suprised of your rocky and bullwinkle purchase. I thought you're 16? Aren't you a little young to know about Rocky and Bullwinkle? I thought that cartoon was for old foggies like me? Chris |

Hey, The DUMB vPOST messed up. The could not match my invoice sent to them to the package received. I must say that the amazon shipping is fantastic! I got my package on the 5th of December. Thats only 4 days out of the 5-8 Business days they "Estimated". Furthermore it being free and all, i'll say that amazon is good and fast. I just hope that they do not send me the wrong stuff and like what Fongalv said. I had to send them another email which will delay this by another 2-3 days for them to acknowlegde it... damned! I doubt I would be getting a set of customs because: 1. I am not an audiophile (yet) 2. I plan to buy the 6G iPod Video 3. I dont think i need them as yet, with my first set of IEMS unless some really good reasons for having customs get me to have one made. 4. I dont have a DMP as of yet as I have sold my iPod Video 5G for 490SGD (READ: 490SGD). haha. i really made a "profit" on that one, considering that the prices have simply plunged now that al the newer cheaper models have been released. 5. My only source is my Nakamichi Amp.1 and connected to a Sony VCD walkman. haha. tahts really lame. Oh yes, he Rocky and Bullwinkle DVD is a christmas & birthday present for my sister. She is a great big fan of Bullwinkle. I initially wanted to buy for her a 32 INCH tall Bullwinkle but could not find it anywhere online. If you guys have of know of any places that sell it please let me know asap!! I really want to get it for her. Thanks guys. Gerald |

After dle4e_2005 "poisoned" me yesterday, I must say ER-4P is worth every penny you spend on it. A pair of customs can only make it better. Amazon sells them at USD$156.99 now, a small reduction of USD$4 from the previous pricing. |
