is it advisable to cut off the bottom umbrella instead of the top one? im asking this because i have small ear canals and im afraid the second umbrella wont fit in nicely. btw im new to the audio world and i just bought a pair of um1's from jaben. im ahdui's friend :D

Anyway, I don't see why you can't cut off the bottom flange. That way it probably won't stick out quite so much. No worries, if you screw it up, can always ask ahdui to get some more from Jaben lol

In my experience on IEM's, a good seal is critical to obtain great sound. If you get a good fit, everything else will follow.

However, I must state that I do not use tri-flanges with my UM2. I found them uncomfortable, and I just cannot get a good seal no matter what I did.
