That's not actually Season 2. They just changed the theme song. There's only 1 season and there always will be.

What do you definse as a "season" then? When the theme song changes, that's typically considered a new season.

I can scientifically prove that boredom can kill you. However, by the time I figure out how to prove it, I'd have already died of boredom.

A new season usually occurs if the story is a continuation of the original story and the episodes are reset back to 1. For Death Note, the episodes continue from 20 therefore I don't conisder it a second season. Openings and endings may change, but that does not make it a new season. School Days changed their opening and ending each week, so would you consider each episode a season? It's basically the same thing no matter how you look at it.

So you'd be saying that Bleach likewise has had only one season? And FMA, Eureka Seven, Inuyasha, etc as well?

Exactly. Plus, they would have given a new title to the new season in the first place.

That's where you're wrong. In case you hadn't noticed, DVDs are commonly organized by season. Y'know, like Season 1 Part 1 and Season 1 Part 2 and Season 2 Part 1, etc. And this is done for... well, pretty much all DVDs that contain telivision series. Including, for example, Fullmetal Alchemist (which, in fact, I saw in this very page in the ads earlier). A season isn't necessarily indicated by a change in the opening theme, but the opening theme usually changes when a new season begins.

I am aware of that. Seasons are organized into parts, and I do realize that OPs and ENDs change with the season. However, that does not mean that a season change occurs every time an opening is changed. And for longer shows like Bleach, they are divided into arcs and are technically only one season. If you look up the wiki article for these anime, you'll find that if "TV Anime" does not appear in the right hand box, the anime only consists of 1 season. Note the difference between this and this. Bleach is composed of one season divided into arcs whereas Shakugan no Shana consists of two seasons. DVDs are not always organized by season. The Full Metal Alchemist DVDs are arranged into volumes each consisting of a few episodes. This is the style that most anime are released in. However, this does not mean that they are separate seasons, merely a single season that has been subdivided into small parts. In that sense you are correct.

I'm ending the debate here. There's no possible way this is going to go anywhere and we're already going way off topic.

Alright, so there's two senses of the word season. In one sense, I'm right, and in the other, you're right.

The thing is, most shows don't have title changes throughout the series. These shows are still categorized into seasons, typically consisting of a certain number of episodes per season. This makes it closer to the natural sense of the word season, as in summer and spring and whatnot. These seasons usually consist of 13 or 26 episodes, possibly just a few episodes off because it fit better into, say, 25 than 26, and the final season of a show may be shorter so that it ends on a nice number like 50. There are exceptions, especially in a short series such as Death Note, in which the season shift occured at episode 20.

Opening themes are usually changed at the change of the season for anime, not so often for cartoons. The ending theme is changed at the start of a new season too, but on the other hand, the ending theme doesn't necessarily only change at the start of a new season.

If you were to go to tv.com, all shows are organized into seasons like thus.

EDIT: Gah, I was already working on my post when you posted that you were ending the debate. Oh well, too late now.
