well i see your point, and i was thinking about that after i posted. I'm just saying the music i listen to doesnt influence me to hurt myself, but rap music is the usual subject: sex/drugs/drinking and its just really stupid, how the girls at my school are pretending to be stupid people who cnat think for themselves... |

People can listen to whatever genre they like, it doesn't mean that I want to listen to it or particularly care about it. I wouldn't want something destroyed/banned simply because I did not like it. Though I do agree, rap is a bad influence. Most rappers (a few exceptions aside, but they should know better) have no idea what a real ghetto life is like (neither do I, but I don't pretend to and that's the difference) and try to emulate a culture that is harmful and dangerous. |

Rap is crap. Of course, this is coming from the kid who is obsessed with Phantom of the Opera and is a complete romantic at heart... I've played piano since I was four (nine whole years- whoo!) and tenor saxophone since I was eleven (two years...). I'm pretty good at piano, but my saxophone needs LOTS of work. |

I think my current favorite band is RHCP. And I know exactly what you mean be people calling you emo because of the people you hang out with, and the kind of music you listen to. The people at my school are the same way. Ever walk into school one day wearing a lot of black and get called goth by every other person? I have. I usually listen to rock, a little bit of Top 100 stuff, and funk rock(RHCP). I use to listen to country and rap, but not anymore. |

RHCP is a very good band, but some of their songs annoy me =P like tell me baby and snow hey oh. they just got wayyyyyy overplayed and annoyed me to no end. I did listen to rap for about a month before i came to my senses. And about the emo/goth thing, I've got a uniform when i go to school but on days we have out of uniform, and i wear black, i do get called emo, and it's something i just live with now, because i don't like the people who did call me emo, so i don't have to prove a thing to them. |

Can someone tell me what exactly IS emo? I sort of thought they were goths with less anger and more misery. But I have no idea what either term really means, beside the obvious stereotypes. |

There's two 'emo' definitions. 1. A person who dresses in dark colors, possibly dyes their hair black, listens to 'cutter music', etcetera. (Basically a goth, not really a real emo) 2. A real emo is someone who participates in self-destructive activities. (Cutting, i.e.) |

So basically they are what I thought they were. It disturbs me that some people proudly define themselves as emo. It's not a good thing. People who cut themselves need help, not a bunch of idiots on LiveJournal proclaiming themselves emo and ranting on about it. |

Exactly. I was in a counseling program with some former cutters. They were lucky they did get help. |

I know. The worst thing is that I have found support groups for cutting on the internet that instead of helping people to stop, actually encourage it... Going off on a slight tangent here...
"Son! Get your ass back here and let me dye your hair!" "No, Dad, I don't want to be an emo!" "How dare you?! My father was an emo, and his father before him, and his father before him! We are all emos here, son! Now get back here or I won't let you listen to Depeche Mode any more!" |

Emo is a very overused slang term for anyone with emotional problems or depressed. So people like to ridicule people by saying things like: Go cut yourself, emo. Or... God, stop complaining! Your so emo. Emo is also a misspelling of Emu

My lawn is emo. It cuts itself. I just thought it was an amusing typo. Sorry.

It is. It's horrible how freakin' inconsiderate people are of others that have problems. |
