Does anyone know a way to measure dynamic friction? |

So in other words, you don't have a clue what dynamic friction even is. |

I can probably help you... I'm assuming it's AKA kinetic friction? |

I haven't heard that term before, but it sounds right. The sort of friction that affects a moving object, I've heard it called slide friction before. I was thinking of doing a science fair project comparing the static (nonmoving) friction and dynamic (moving) friction of different surfaces, but I'm not sure how to calculate dynamic friction. |

Yeah, that's kinetic friction. Actually, I'm not too sure on how to calculate it exactly, if you know the net force acting on an object and the applied force, the frictional force is calculated through simple means. I'll take a look through my physics textbook, and put it into simple terms, since I know you aren't a grade 12 university prep physics student. >_> |

The trick is that I'm not quite sure how to measure that. I mean, I figure that I can put a block on a flat surface and tie a rope to it, attach some sort of engine to the rope and set it to pull and I'll get a constant force, then maybe decrease the force until I find the point where it stops moving, but I'm not sure how I'd know how much force I was using, so that idea went down the drain. |

kinetic friction(dynamic friction) = coefficient of kinetic friction * normal force The coefficient of kinetic friction is a constant depending on the surfaces you're comparing, for example, the coefficient of kinetic friction would be low between an object and an icy surface, and high between an object and rough surface(like a carpet). This is an obtainable value through research, if you wanted to know the coefficient of kinetic friction for two surfaces, you can find an approximate value by Googling it. Normal force is equal to the object's mass in kg multiplied by 9.8. Multiply the normal force and the coefficient of kinetic friction, and there you have it, kinetic(dynamic) friction. |

If you ever want to program games, you'll likely HAVE to learn something about physics, kinetic friction included. Gah, that long post was painful, I can't use letters of the Greek alphabet, subscripts, etc. |

Okay, I think I get the gist of it, but now I still have to find a way to get the coefficient of kinetic friction. Looks like I'll have my work cut out for me this year for science fair. |

Just Google coefficent of kinetic friction of rubber tires on ice or something like that. I have a chart of some coefficients in my textbook, I can see if any of them are useful for a science fair project. |
