One object sank (the ball of clay), one floated(the clay boat). They supposedly had the same mass and volume. But that means that they both should have sank, or both floated. |

Well, the one that floated did so because of it's surface area, it pushed a lot of water out of the way, and so the water pushed back on it a lot, at least, that's how I came to understand it. |

GGARRR!! You people aren't getting the point- think of the properties of bouyancy- if the volume is greater or equal to the mass, then an object floats. If it's mass is more than its volume, it sinks. So if 2 objects have equal mass and volume, they should both either both float, or both sink. But one sank and one floated, they shouldn't have the same volume. Bill Nye lied! |

The ball has less volume than that of the boat, I'd assume, it's all crammed into one space there, in the boat, it's spread out a bit more. |

Then he did lie. It was just a mistake in the script then, or maybe there's more to buoyancy than that rule you stated? After all, he mentioned something about the shape, didn't he? |

I'll quote him on the shape part... "It's the shape that matters. If it's shaped like a rock, it will sink, and if it's shaped like a boat, it will float." And like you said, there are some rocks that float, and if you made a boat out of granite, it would sink. So that was a lie too. |

I don't think it's a coincidence, I remember one time when we were talking about cats, there were cat product ads, I think the text on the page is scanned, and it matches words with ads, and then displays them. |
