Yes, it's true! Bill Nye, the beloved science wizz that is the star of the show- "Bill Nye the Science Guy" lied! Our science teacher showed us a video that said that if you put an object in the water, if it's in the shape of a boat, it floats, and if it's the shape of a rock, it sinks! If you had a rock that was shaped like a boat, it'd sink, and the same goes for a styrafoam rock! He also said (in the same show) that if you have 2 objects that have the same mass, but are different shapes (a boat and a rock, for instance) the sinking objects and the floating objects displace the same amount of water and therefore have the same volume! Because of his lie, we had to do the lab expirament on bouyancy all over again to prove Bill Nye wrong. He was wrong! |

I don't see what's wrong, mass =/= volume. |

I don't really see what the problem is here, buoyancy depends on volume, and volume alone, IIRC. |

Hmmm... Translation? I'm a wee bit confused here. |

Okay... If an object floats, that means its volume is greater than its mass, right? And if it sinks, its volume is less than the mass. But BIll Nye took 2 pieces of clay with an equal mass, shaped one like a boat and the other like a rock, then dropped them into a bowl. There were pans under the bowl. He took the pans and emptied them into a measuring cup. Then he held the measuring cups out at arms length and said that the two objects had the same volume. But that means they should have either both floated or both sank, becaus etheir masses are the same. Then he said that if something is shaped like a rock, it sinks, and if it's shaped like a boat, ti floats. |

Hm... well, that is sorta true. I've seen it done with tin foil and pennies. It would depend on the object, though; just because it's shaped like a rock doesn't mean it will always sink, and just because it's shaped like a boat doesn't mean it will always float. |

Well, shape isn't everything, density plays a major role too, but both objects should've had the same density. Did both objects sink? I know a fair bit about physics(probably the most on this board), so I might be able to figure this out. |

It IS true that, with an object of a certain density, it will float as a boat and sink as a rock. However, it's not true that ALL objects shaped like a rock will sink and ALL objects shaped like a boat will float. |

^That's true, there's actually a type of rock that floats, it's called humus, and it floats because of it's low density, which is a result of it being porous. |
