Invest in Love… now this is a title that can WORK. It’s got lots of HOPE or is it a TWIST? We can see it as someone who puts a lot into LOVE… as in making an investment… or we can see it as love being put in place of someone else… to place in possession… if it is used as a verb… it can be give quality or abilities to… furnish with power of authority… give someone qualities or abilities. Now this leaves me wondering the vast opportunities ahead for us for tonight’s episode. What/When/Who/Why will invest in love? Last week we were left with the Chief saying Der is fired. Der tells him to think about it. Mer was anxious to hear his side of the story but yet he was too tired and fell asleep. We were all left in shock that Izzie did not make her appointment and that Reed was the one to be there for Alex and witness this it all. Cristina and Owen are still at odds. Lexie was a Rockstar in pampers. Who knows what Lexie will be sporting tonight? Hee hee Will we see Izzie? Will she come and face Alex? Will there still be peace among everyone? I am still in shock about what the Chief told Der… and I am waiting to see if anything is done about it or will it be all in the past? As if it did not happen? I guess I will continue to wonder until later. Here’s to hoping for some Drama Filled Entertainment that has us all laughing, crying, and shouting ROCKSTAR. I cannot wait to come back here and see what everyone has to say. I will see you all later tonight or possibly tomorrow morning. Since we have Invested our LOVE into Grey’s… Let’s hope ShondaLand proves to Invest in Love as well… Bring it On!!!! |

I love Owen and Cris they are perfect for each other! I love Derek and Meredith! Always have Always will! I love Arizona! She's a Rockstar! telling the chief to get the hell out of her OR! I loved Wallace! I was REALLY hoping he'd make it! I loved Alex! He's totally made to be a Peds surgeon! And SOOOO hot with that shirt off! I loved it too, Poor christina finally got a chance and hunt is standing in the way of it, and she's not that upset with him? And hunt doesn't see or get her? And boy that kiss with that new guy, hmm, tension, but shows even with her being drunk, she's invested her feelings into hunt. arizona did awesome, as usual. She's the spot light, and that's great, we get to see more of her and know her a bit more. loved how she got in touch emotionaly with her patients, and when push comes to shove, she will be their voice. good for her to stand up to the chief again! and poor callie trying to offer support and when she does it, arizona does the opposite of what callie would think she'd react. And alex, how touching with him and the baby. he's so peds! It really makes me hate izzie more. I dont care what excuse izzie has, because I don't buy it. No one deserves a dear john letter and a huge bill at that. then next episode, she's back, omg, ugh, of course she feels she's always right in how she feels and others are wrong. and she better not be pregnant, what kind of storyline is that for her??? I hope it was directed to someone else. Love meredith scenes even if it's limited. she's so glowing! and HAPPY!!! and how derek gets reassurance from mer about the chief. |

LOVE IT!!!! I cried like a baby, but still loved it. Alex was unbelievable and...OMG. DID YOU SEE THE CHEST ON THAT BOY?!?!?!?!!?!? I have always, always thought he would do well in peds. In fact I have thought this ever since Addie forced him onto her service. I hope Shonda sticks with this because it's about freakin' time some of the residents start picking specialties!!!! Loved the part with Alex, Derek, Mark and Bailey. So cute, so funny, just like the old Grey's. <3Arizona rocks my world. I LOVE HER! I love that she is extremely emotional yet tough as nails when it comes to her patients. And I LOVE that she told the chief off and then in the end Wallace's parent's told the chief and the penis fish dude off. IT'S ABOUT FREAKIN' TIME! I'm so sick of the Chief and the hospital board! Also loved Christina and I totally understand the dilema. I understand why Christina did what she did but I also completely understand Owen's POV. Christina really, really needs a cardio god who actually wants to teach her back on the scene. And I have to admit that I do miss Burke for this very reason. He really was a true cardio god. I am also LOVING Jackson. HOTTIE!!! He fits well with the rest of the cast and I hope he sticks around. Like I said before...we can ALWAYS make room for more hotties. And the kiss between him and Christina was pretty hot but it's not going anywhere...they so obviously aren't right for each other. (Side note: Jesse Williams the character who plays Jackson is on Jimmy Kimmel right now. He is half African American/half Swedish which as we know = McHottie!!!) I'm going to admit that I'm not looking forward to the return of Izzie. I am 100% on Alex's side. Leaving him like she did is selfish and immature. And if she seriously left him all because she thought he told the chief she wasn't ready....WOW!!! I will be so done with her! That is seriously something a 10 year old would do. After everything he has been through, after everything he has done for her and this is her thanks. RRRRRRRRRRR.....I'm officially on Linda and Caroline's side with this issue at the moment. Shonda had better pull some serious strings in redeeming this character because I really don't think there are too many Izzie fans out there at this point. |

I loved it Arizona Rocked!!! This was her EPISODE to SHINE and she did it with spunk, class, sensitivity, and charm. To tell you the truth... it was soo touching that I am at a loss for words at the moment. Did you all see poor Callie face when Arizona finally told her she loved her? Callie soo needed to hear that. Not much Mer/Der but what we got was soo loving that it was enough for me. I loved how the chief still has not spoken to Der but yet Mer says "Oh he will." Mer was still counting on Cristina for feedback. Cristina is being tested I think and I loved the fact that she went ahead and did what she felt was right... and Jackson... OMG... that guy was all searching Cristina's every move. He was soo in tune to her that I knew given the chance he would try and make his move. He did... and Cristina pulled back... I was soo proud of her... but yet when she went to talk to Owen and pretty much begged him to come home... I felt soo sorry for her. Cuz right now Owen in my eyes is not treating Cristina very well. He is too caught up with other things... whether they are the good for the Hospital or not... he is pulling away from Cristina.. or so it seems to me. I wanted to see more Cristina and Jackson... sorry but I did. Alex/Reed... Reed said it well when her and Jackson were talking... She noticed his attraction to Cristina and Jackson noticed hers to Alex. Poor Alex... he was hanging on to the baby because not only could he not go home... but he had no one to go home to. Plus he had just gotten the 200 thousand dollar bills left over from Izzie's operations. When the chief gave it to him... I was soo mad at Izzie... so frustrated that I was glad I did not see her. Poor Alex... He was soo lonely... and I loved what Bailey said... Alex would do GREAT in PED's... when Alex puts his guard down like he did this episode... he is at his BEST. I loved how he cared and he was soo attentive to the lil baby. So it was Arizona's Birthday as well as her patients... Arizona felt pressured due to a 25 million dollar donation that was being flashed in front of her face. She needed Callie to remind her that she was GREAT.. she could do this.. and Callie rocked as her supporter... her motivational speech. Even though the lil boy was not in good health for this surgery... Arizona was pressured to perform it. She knew it was not going to turn out well... and she told them. But for the sake of the hospital she would TRY. And she does... but it ends up bad. Wallace dies... and Arizona knows her place is to stay away from the parents... but yet her conscious and loyalty to the family makes it difficult. She goes home... Callie with Lexie's help (idea) ends up making a surprise party to celebrate her birthday but yet.. Arizona cries. Callie follows her and finds out that her patient died... and she can not do this right now. Callie understands and says she will take care of it. Loved this side of Callie. Arizona ends up back at the Hospital and into Williams room.. and the Chief and a board member who was trying to kiss the parents butts just looked at her. The board member tries to tell her to stop but the Chief interrupts and allows Arizona her say (This reminded me of the OLD CARING CHIEF). I was soo happy and crying by this time. Arizona asks them if they want to see the child... and when they do... The mother tries to say her routine prayer... and she stops cuz she is crying and Arizona picks up where she left off and says "It has" and the Father finishes "to be done 3 times to make it right" and I was a gooner... I was crying like a baby. The Father tells the Board Member and the Chief that they will still donate but not because of the butt kissing but because of this woman "Arizona" because of her they would get the 25 Million! Lexie/Mark... OMG first Mark looked HOT... and I loved his attitude... "No One likes Surprise Parties" and when it backfired... Lexie was talking about how she loved hers... and Mark says "How old were you?" Lexie being Lexie says "7"... I just laughed my butt off. Arizona goes home to find Callie asleep on the sofa... Callie a bit sleepy/tipsy says something to the fact that she has party hats and lingerie... and when she tries to blow on the party buzzer it was not working... I was smiling... I could not help myself.. poor Callie was trying to impress... and then Arizona says "I love you" and Callie was like "You do?" I said to myself... ARIZONA YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR!!!! This was your night to SHINE and you did it!!! I know I am leaving off a lot but heck... it was AWESOME and I loved every minute of it. I am soo READY for next week. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2009/11/greys-anatomy-jessica-capshaw-shines-as-arizona-robbins.html 'Grey's Anatomy': Jessica Capshaw shines as Arizona Robbins November 6, 2009 | 12:13 am In tonight's episode, "Invest in Love," Meredith's voiceover returned after last week's brief surrender to Derek. I was hoping that Ellen Pompeo's maternity leave would give us a longer break from that ever-monotonous introduction, but, oh well. The focus of this episode is children in distress. My mom works with very sick children, and for years I've heard her incredible stories about the children her team saves, and about the ones who succumb to their illnesses. It's a subject very, very close to my heart, so, in my defense, I was ultra-sensitive to tonight's subject matter. Don't judge me for crying ... a lot! The first child was a preemie baby, born to Laura, a mother suffering from major head trauma after a car accident. After sustaining injuries and gestating only 30 weeks, the baby doesn't have much hope for survival, but Laura is too injured to meet her. "What if she dies before she's ever been held?" Laura cries. Alex is feeling despondent after being served (by the always warm and fuzzy Chief Webber) with an enormous medical bill for his MIA wife, who still isn't coming in for her IL-2 treatments. He's resigned to the fact that the baby is going to die, but not so resigned that he doesn't make sure she gets held before she dies. "You're not alone," he whispers to the baby. "You're not alone." (That 'awww' you just heard was the sound of millions of women melting all over the country.) When the baby's condition suddenly improves, Bailey says that skin-to-skin contact could save her, and demands in a very Bailey-like fashion that Alex remove his shirt. (That 'oooh' you just heard... Well, you get it.) Not only do we get half-naked Alex for an entire episode, but his shirtlessness leaves room for some nice one-liners from the McBFFs. "Have you started to lactate yet?" Derek asks, before Sloane bursts into the room asking: "Is this the room for the calendar shoot? They said it was downstairs." When the baby makes it against all odds, Bailey muses that Karev would be good in pediatrics. Excuse my inarticulateness, but... duh? Karev has had an affinity for babies since he started working with Addison years ago. I think he likes them because they don't care what a jerk he is, so long as he takes his shirt off and nuzzles them for a while. And not that I want him to cheat on Izzie, but I'm pretty sure he could find those same qualities in the wide-eyed Dr. Reed. The second pediatrics patient is a 15-year-old girl who fell off her roof while making what she calls a "calculated risk." I call it "stupid" -- she ate hallucinogenic "magic" mushrooms in the middle of the night and then believed she could fly off her roof. When her parents start to get outraged, she reminds them that she gets straight As, is on the honor roll, runs student council and the school paper, and tutors kids with reading problems. She's a dream child. Oh, except for the druggie thing. Her attitude inspires Christina, Callie and Owen to reminisce about their own childhoods while they perform surgery. When Jackson starts to chime in, though, they don't care. I'm not surprised! He's a Mercy Wester, after all. Mercy Westers are robots! They don't have childhoods! They don't have feelings! They don't have souls! Of course, something goes wrong during the surgery. Perhaps inspired by Derek's rogue turn last week, Christina steps in to do an invasive cardio procedure herself, with Owen and Callie shouting their objections. After all, she's unqualified. Jackson is the only one who backs her up. It was painful to watch Owen ream her out in the scrub room. I couldn't tell if he was angry as her superior or as her boyfriend. Jackson, however, thought Christina's intrepidity was hot -- similar to the way Burke used to. I wouldn't have been surprised if Christina had sought out a little carnal comfort with Jackson, but she pushed him away when he drunkenly kissed her later. Hmmm... Somehow I don't think we've seen the end of that. The real star of this episode was Jessica Capshaw's Dr. Arizona Robbins. She began her rounds by warning her residents that pediatric surgery wasn't just a miniature version of general surgery. "These are the tiny humans. These are children. They believe in magic. They play pretend. There is fairy dust in their IV bags. They hope, and they cross their fingers, and they make wishes, and that makes them more resilient than adults. They recover faster, survive worse. They believe." I always love Arizona's speeches. Sometimes, the monologues on this show get drawn out, becoming too saccharine or too overwrought. Jessica Capshaw, however, always delivers her lines with subtlety, forgoing histrionics in favor of honesty. We were then introduced to a very Doogie-like "Dr." Wallace Anderson, a child suffering from short gut syndrome who often joins Arizona on rounds to work on his math and science skills after seven months in the hospital. Early in the episode, Arizona promised Wallace that they'd celebrate their shared birthday together. And on "Grey's Anatomy," a promise is always a very, very bad sign. Wallace's mom (in an amazing turn by Erica Gimpel, who I adored as a different Wallace's mom on "Veronica Mars") and dad ask for a meeting with the Chief and Arizona, presenting the hospital with an incredibly generous $25 million donation, some of which they want to go to researching their son's condition. Unfortunately, it's too late. Arizona doesn't think that Wallace will survive another surgery, and if he does, surgery will only buy him two painful months. "You think I'm pouring all this money into research so that you can find a cure for some other kid?" Wallace's father cries. Pressured by the Chief, and by the weight of all that research money, Arizona reluctantly agrees to do the surgery. Wallace is a smart kid, though. He's been in the hospital a long time; he knows there's only two ways out of there, and he doesn't see a light at the end of his tunnel. His first surgery goes alright, but later, complications arise and he dies while Arizona tries to save him. Afterward, Arizona is curt and clearly furious with the obvious dollar signs in the Chief's eyes. Arizona has always had trouble standing up to authority. Last week she stood up to the Chief and collapsed into a messy pile of tears on Callie's shoulder. This week, no such waterworks... until she gets home to the ill-timed surprise birthday party Callie throws for her. (Did anybody notice that Callie invited the Mercy Westers? Did she not get the heartless, soulless, robot people memo?) I adore Callie and Arizona's relationship, in case my other episode reviews haven't made that abundantly clear. They argue, they make mistakes, and they yell at each other, but at the end of the day, they still love each other, and they're doing their best. It's really nice to see a gay relationship on TV that isn't meant to titillate or shock anyone. (Kevin and Scotty on "Brothers and Sisters" are another great example; kudos to ABC.) Arizona was the latest on the list of doctors to skewer the Chief's new focus on money, and she was right to do so. It was mortifying to watch the board and the Chief scramble to save face with the Andersons just hours after they lost their son. "I'd be more than happy to oversee any packing," Jennings (the superb Mitch Pileggi) says. "I've already arranged for a car." How gross! Luckily, Arizona's words got through to the Chief and he invited her back into the room to speak to the Andersons, despite Jennings' protests. When a child dies, money doesn't matter. Parents want to know that the doctors cared. They want human compassion, not greed-driven platitudes. I'm sure I'm not the only one who cried when Arizona finished up Mrs. Anderson's "good dreams, good dreams, here to stay" mantra over Wallace's body. I'm confident that Arizona will do amazing things with that $25 million, because like her patients, Arizona Robbins still believes in magic. Let's discuss this week's episode in the comments, guys! What'd you think of Jackson and Christina's not-quite-hookup? Do you think Dr. Karev should lose the top half of his scrubs forever? Do you love Jessica Capshaw's performance as Arizona as much as I do? -- Carina MacKenzie |

http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2009/11/greys_anatomy_where_the_magic.html Grey’s Anatomy: Where the Magic Happens Since everyone who operates together sleeps together, this week's episode appropriately opens on the beds of Callie and Arizona and Meredith and McDreamy. It's the middle of the night, and everyone's pagers are going off. Well, everyone’s except for Meredith’s, whom we only see briefly this episode, and only while she's in bed with Derek. Callie gets called to tend to a 15-year-old girl with who jumped off her roof and broke 52 bones. (52!) No one knows what she was doing on the roof in the first place, but it all makes sense when we later learn that the type-A student council president was high on ‘shrooms at the time. Awesome. She's all black-and-blue and there's blood and protruding bones and we have to avert our eyes from the screen. This is ABC, people! If we wanted gore like that, we'd watch the channel where they video real surgeries, not the Patrick Dempsey show. Meanwhile, Arizona's busy giving a motivational speech to all staffers in the pediatric unit. She talks about miracles and magic and fairy dust while soft music plays, and she chipperly chants, "In peds, anything is possible"; it’s like something you'd hear on the welcome tram at Disneyworld. She goes off to watch over Wallace, a brainy and adorable 11-year-old who's been stuck in the hospital for seven months with a serious intestinal illness. His unexpectedly wealthy parents decide to donate $25 million to the newly dubbed Seattle Grace–Mercy West in order to fund research on their son's disease. Arizona hyperventilates ever so slightly on getting the news. Suddenly it's the next morning and everyone's hanging out at Callie and Cristina's while Callie cooks up oatmeal and bacon and toast and fruit. Who has breakfast parties before work on weekdays? And why would McSteamy and Lexie come over to chat when they'd see everyone an hour later at the hospital anyway? Callie must make a mean omelette. We learn that Arizona's birthday is coming up and Callie is going to throw her a last-minute surprise party. Yay! A party! Back at the hospital, where people at least pretend to work, the Chief slams Alex with the unpaid balance of Izzy's medical bills, proving that even a cancer-stricken character who's supposedly been offed from the show can still give us a headache. Alex consoles himself by cradling a ten-weeks-premature baby, who looks like a sad but cute little alien. The premie's heart rate rises the more Alex cuddles her (magic!) and Bailey tells him to take off his shirt because she thinks skin-on-skin contact will be most helpful. It’s totally not that she wants to check out his abs now that Izzy's out of the picture. Either way, Alex is topless for the remainder of the episode, and we don't mind. Hunt and Yang, meanwhile, are busy arguing in the OR, likely more out of sexual tension than because of actual medical issues. Against Hunt's orders, Yang slices into their tanking patient, cutting and injecting fluids (again we turn away as it gets bloody). But whatever she does works and the patient stabilizes — except now Hunt's pissed because Yang upstaged him. Meanwhile, cute new Mercy Wester Avery tells it like it is, saying to Yang that she "rocked it," and that Hunt's just jealous he didn't do it himself. She tells him to shut up. Wallace's health is on the brink and his parents want Arizona to operate, even though she thinks the surgery is too risky. But in his best James Earl Jones voice, the chief instills her with confidence, and she halfheartedly agrees to it. We're sure his insistence on the dangerous surgery has nothing to do with the pending $25 million donation. Though the surgery goes well, Wallace dies anyway, and Arizona's heartbroken. She finds out just before walking into her surprise party and immediately bursts into tears. She runs out, Callie runs after her, and McSteamy and Lexie drink beer and make out. Avery, who also takes advantage of the free booze, corners Yang to tell her that her impromptu slicing and dicing in the OR was "hot." Hey, whatever does it for you. They briefly shove their tongues down each other's throats, until Yang pulls away and asserts, "No, I'm involved." We're hoping Yang has a few more shots and lets this happen again. Finally, in perhaps the most graphic moment of the show, we see Callie asleep on the couch wearing sleazy lingerie and holding a platter of doughnuts, waiting for Arizona to come home. She does, and they profess their love for one another. Who knew Dunkin’ was an aphrodisiac? |

Alex should never wear a shirt.. EVER! ![]() I really enjoyed this eppy.. and I almost cried when Wallace died... he was such a likeable little guy. I hated the ass-kissing at the end, and was glad to hear the daddy say that he was still investing the money, and not cuz of the ass-kissing. Cristina getting hit on was a bit out of the blue... I actually expected her to go for it and was shocked when she didn't. She must really love Owen. Mark/Derek amused me coming up to laugh at Alex... and Bailey amused me even more when she kicked them out.. I love how she's always in charge! LoL Arizona/Callie's 'I Love You' at the end was very sweet. I don't think I missed anything... Grey's is getting back to the show I used to love..

I really enjoyed this episode, it had everything, drama, angst, lust, humor and love all in one. Arizona rocks, I absolutely love this character. My only complaint would be that I only heard Callie telling Arizona she loved her too, I didn't see it, the screen went black as she said it. Loved Alex with the baby, I think he would be great in Peds. I think the Chief may finally be getting a clue to how his actions are being perceived by the staff. It is good drama and material for JP, but I want the old feeling Richard Webber back. I hated that he pushed a surgeon to do a surgery they were against, and last week wouldn't support a surgeon wanting to do a complicated surgery he felt he could do. Looking forward to next week. |

http://www.greyswriters.com/2009/11/stacy-mckee-on-invest-in-love.html Stacy McKee on "Invest in Love"... Original Airdate: 11-5-09 OK. So I am currently writing this blog (and when I say writing, I mean longhand. In a notebook. With a pen. That’s right, people. This week I’m blogging old school!) early on a Saturday morning as I stand in line at a horse racing park near the Los Angeles Airport. I, along with easily 500 other people, am waiting in line to get my H1N1 vaccine. So far, I’ve been in line for 35 minutes. This is one of the only places in the city offering the vaccine right now and while, ordinarily, I totally wouldn’t bother getting up early on my Saturday to go stand in a ridiculously long line for a shot… At this particular moment, I really don’t have a choice. My OB was pretty darn insistent. As was Shonda, who called me out of the writers’ room on Friday to try and convince me to leave work and go home, suggesting I should seriously consider spending the next several weeks safely sanitized inside a large plastic bubble. (Greys and Private have already had 3 confirmed H1N1 cases emerge in just the last week, so the likelihood of me being exposed is… well... not absurd.) So everyone’s freaking out. And insisting I go get vaccinated. And all of this just because --I’m pregnant. You wouldn’t think that being pregnant could cause such a fuss. Guess what? It can. And you probably would think that being pregnant – newly pregnant, mind you, and ridiculously hormonal – might prevent me from getting assigned to write the all PEDS episode this season. Seems a little cruel, doesn’t it? To ask the newly pregnant girl to tackle the one episode in which every major patient is supposed to be a SICK KID? We’ve been planning an all PEDS episode for some time. Arizona is a regular now and we’ve started seeing more and more of her – but for the most part, we always see her helping Callie through crisis after crisis. We haven’t yet really given Arizona a crisis of her own. So what better chance than in an episode where every patient is – in essence – her patient. Every patient is from the PEDS floor. PEDS, where things work a little bit differently, where the patients believe in magic. Because they are kids. Sick, dying KIDS. Guess what? As concerned as Shonda was about me living in a plastic bubble, she was just as equally NOT concerned that perhaps making me write the all Pediatrics episode was just a teeny, tiny little bit of torture. “It’ll be great,” she said. “Use your new maternal instincts to make the episode better,” she said. “NO, WALLACE CAN’T LIVE! I DON’T CARE HOW PREGNANT YOU ARE. THE ADORABLE LITTLE SICK KID MUST DIE!” she said. Okay, maybe she didn’t say that last bit exactly like that. But still. Even I knew I couldn’t really tell Wallace’s story properly if I let him live. And as sad as it might have made you to watch his mom come into the morgue and try to usher his final resting bad dreams away - I’m telling you people - it was even more terrible and heartbreaking and so so so sad for me. ‘Cause all I could think of the entire time – as I wrote it, as I sat on set and watched us film it, as I sobbed all the way through it while watching a cut of the episode in my office – all I could think about was: Oh my god, what if that were MY baby. What if I were that mom? What if I were the one visiting my child in the morgue? And then I would officially declare to anyone who would listen that I was a terrible person. A terrible, terrible person to write such a horribly sad story about a dying child -- WHILE PREGNANT. You know how, when Alex is standing there all shirtless and Derek is mocking him, Alex blurts out: “Bailey made me!” – Well, that’s how I feel about this episode. Shonda made me! I still can’t get through a cut without crying. Stupid me for killing stupid Wallace when I’m this stupidly hormonal. It’s a good thing you aren’t here in line with me, cause I’m actually starting to cry right now, just thinking about it. And I’m pretty sure my crying is starting to make the volunteer line monitor in the red vest a little anxious. She keeps looking at me and whispering to the red vested guy next to her. Btw, I’ve hit the hour and 10 minute mark now. And the line hasn’t moved since I started writing this. So, to balance out all the sadness in the episode, I knew I had to incorporate a story that would make me (and you) feel good, too. Enter Alex. Saving a teeny tiny baby. In the NICU. Shirtless. See? A happy miracle baby story! And a half naked handsome man! I’m not such a terrible person! Alex’s story came from these cases I’d been reading about tiny, preemie babies where the doctors had done everything medically possible, but the babies just weren’t strong enough to rally. So, a lot of times, the parents would just pick up their little babies, thinking that at least they would get to hold their child for a few minutes while it was still alive. And then these miracles would happen, where the babies would feel their parents’ warmth and hear their heart beat, and the babies would, miraculously, start to thrive. One of the articles described how no incubator could mimic the simple act, the simple comfort of the baby being held. Which was why this story was so perfect for Alex. He feels so completely helpless right now, so utterly useless and alone. And then he encounters this little baby who’s also struggling, also alone. For a moment, Alex finds a purpose. And he’s reminded that he can make a difference in somebody’s life, even when his own seems to be falling apart all around him. On the most basic level, these two little lost souls just need each other. Ooo! Just moved up in line. Several whole inches. This is progress, people. The surprise party, by the way, is based on a true story, too. A true Grey’s story. It happened a few years ago, when we threw Krista Vernoff a surprise baby shower. It was the best kept secret our office has EVER had (because, basically, no one in our office can keep a secret. We’re a bunch of blabber mouths. The fact that the party was genuinely a surprise still surprises ME!) – Anyway. Shonda told Krista to come to a meeting at her house one morning, a morning where Krista was in the middle of a million different rewrites and script pages and stress. Lots of stress. So Krista kept calling people from the office, and none of us would pick up our phones because – of course – we were all crouched in Shonda’s living room, waiting for Krista to arrive. So by the time she got to Shonda’s, Krista had probably had one of the worst mornings ever, just in time to walk in the front door, have us all yell SURPRISE, and to have poor Krista burst into tears. Full on, pregnant and hormonal tears. Obviously, right now, I can identify. And that is exactly what happens to Arizona. She steps into the apartment wanting nothing more than some quiet time to just decompress and maybe vent a little and just feel her feelings and instead – she’s met with a room full of party goers. Mark Sloan is right when he says that surprise parties are hostile. Because they ARE! (One of my favorite unscripted moments in the episode comes from Cristina when she’s eating breakfast and listening to Mark’s take on surprise parties. If you notice, she TOTALLY sides with Mark as she chomps on her bacon. It’s hilarious!) And, if you were paying attention, you may have noticed that the surprise party moment is the ONLY moment in the entire episode where Arizona cries. Even though, as we’ve established, Arizona tends to cry in the face of authority figures. Arizona is a people pleaser –Which is why she winds up agreeing to a surgery she doesn’t believe in – she’s trying to please Richard. He’s the chief. She doesn’t want to let him down… But even after standing up to him, after kicking him out of her OR, she still doesn’t break down and cry. After losing Wallace, Arizona still doesn’t cry. After having to face the Chief and face Jennings in the wake of losing Wallace, Arizona still doesn’t cry. Until the party. Where it all just comes flooding out. In the most horribly embarrassing way. I love, though, that then she gets it out. She cries with Callie, but when she gets back to the hospital, even in the morgue with Wallace’s parents, Arizona doesn’t break down. I feel like it’s a big turning point for her. Meanwhile – I’ve now been in line an hour and 45 minutes. This vaccine better be worth it. I can’t, of course, blog without talking about Meredith and Derek who, admittedly, don’t have a LOT of screen time this episode. But the time they have is, I think, utterly charming and adorable. I love seeing them be happy and married and totally in sync with one another. We were, of course, limited a little by the fact that when we filmed this, Ellen had JUST had her baby. In fact, this is the first episode we filmed with her post pregnancy. (It was really fun, actually. She had tons of adorable baby photos to share. That is one cute baby with one FANTASTIC wardrobe. Just saying.) And finally – one of my favorite moments in the entire episode comes in the very last scene – from Callie. For those of you who have been watching Grey’s for a while, you know that Callie tends to blurt things like “I love you” out – often prematurely. She did it with George, and he never could say it back. She’s a gal who jumps in head first, sometimes blindly, and we’ve seen it bite her in the ass. So what I love love love is the moment when, after the horrible day that Arizona’s had, after the disastrous party, after losing one of her favorite patients – Arizona comes home, takes one look at Callie in her lingerie and that silly party hat – and Arizona says “I love you” first. The look on Callie’s face when she hears that? Oh man, I’m starting to tear up again. It’s just so unbelievably vulnerable and sweet and lovely. Okay. Totally crying again. …Just as Red Vest is motioning for me to move ahead in line. I think maybe I’m about to go get my H1N1 shot. FINALLY. After over 2 hours of waiting. At least, I suppose, I’ve put all the waiting to good use. I’ve blogged. I’ve cried. And I’ve given myself a lot of extra work for Wednesday night, when I’ll inevitably be typing all this up. So that’s it for now, kids! Talk to you again in a few episodes! |

poor Arizona, I'm glad she went back to the hospital and let the Anderson's see Wallace
