Give Peace a Chance – Last week we saw that everything was left in CHAOS… and Der and the Chief were not happy with each other. Mer was on her way home to recover. Cristina left them all thinking that what happened to April could have happened to any of them… so What is in store for us this week? The title makes me think that everyone is going to try and work together as a TEAM instead of against each other. Will this prove to be true? Or will there be TROUBLE still brewing? I am betting there will be trouble… Will we see any Lexie/Sloan scenes? Will Callie/Arizona have alone time? Will Cristina/Owen have any time together? Will Izzie be there to wonder why Alex is not picking up his phone? You know… the phone he smashed up against the hospital wall? What will the Chief and Bailey be up to? Will there be any more firing? Are we going to get a DRAMA filled action packed episode? I almost guarantee it!!! I cannot wait to see you all here later or tomorrow to discuss it all. Grey’s is getting HOTTER by the Episode!!! Bring it On Shondaland… Bring it on! |

I got one word right now - AWESOME!!! I completely loved this episode and I am going to re-watch it over again tonight. This episode, in my opinion Redeemed Der... he finally felt proud of what he does. Even though it left us feeling like the Chief and Der may never see eye to eye ever again... it was INSPIRATIONAL... it inspired me. One of the fellow workers, Issac, asks Der for his opinion on a scan... its an inoperable tumor connected to his spine. Der is talking about it and Issac smiles... he tells Der that he wants him to operate on it and that it was his scans. This man tells Der that he came to Seattle Grace to meet him. That in his opinion Der was an incredible doctor who took chances. The whole time I was thinking... this has to work... it has to! This will give Der his ego back... his self esteem... his reason for being a doctor back. Well of course the Chief tells him no... Bailey calls it "Dangerous" but is willing to help. Who gets to scrub in has to take a small test of precision... putting a red dot on Washington nose (dollar bill). Well Jackson aces it... Cristina fails... and leaves Cristina wondering. You see a lot of interaction between Cristina and Jackson... lots of competing still going on. Lexie gets upset with Der cuz she was not invited to the session and she tells him "I am your sister!"... and then Der says he needs her to be in there to be his doctor. Lexie was soo proud until Jackson throws it in her face that she was his BIOTCH!... I love Lexie's expressions... she is soo funny. The diaper was hilarious... incredibly hilarious... and she inspired Cristina too... hee hee Poor Cristina walks off... and I wore a diaper for this... Owen face "WHAT?" Sloan is helping Der but he tells Der he has gone "All rouge" and he teases Der but yet in the end... he helps him. I loved how everyone was working together to help Der. Even Owen... when he tried to hide why he was not in the OR... and then Callie and Arizona... OMG... Arizona ROCKS... she told the Chief off and tells him to pretty much back off... that he is working on his spine and that anything can go wrong...yet when the Chief walks away... Arizona falls apart and cries on Callie's shoulder... Callie says "Oh ok I am down with this"... or something like that. It was soo funny and yet soo caring. Friction between Cristina and Owen... Cristina is antsy she wants to operate... and then finally at the very end... Owen helps stubborn Cristina find out what she was doing wrong with the red dot on the nose... that scene kind of reminded me of the old Burke scenes. Mer... she is calling to find out what is going on... Cristina is telling her... but yet... what I loved the MOST... was when Der came home and explained the tumor to her... He draws it on the wall... and YEP... I saw the blue post it in a frame on that same very wall. I loved that... Mer/Der have such a wonderful and loving relationship. Der knew Mer was going crazy and she wanted to know what was going on... she was in fact helping from afar... she was questioning Cristina throughout the surgery and I felt soo sorry for Mer... but yet I was remembering all those surgeries that she was in there with Der and helping... it was like she was still there. They so need to work together as a TEAM... they are a TEAM! Well... My favorite line is "Be Inspired" and the fact that Issac trusted and helped Der in more ways than one but yet after the surgery... Issac was in doubt... he could move his feet...and he was not suppose to do that... but yet... Der ROCKED... he got the whole tumor out without leaving him paralyzed. Der is BACK!!! He walks up to the Chief and tells him he is tired of the fighting... and what does the Chief say "Der your fired" and Der's response (with a bit of inspirational sentiment ) "Go home Chief and think about it". Der was not going to take the Chief's firing... he was not going to give up... he was not going to allow this to happen. Der goes home with a bottle of wine to celebrate... Mer waits anxiously for info cuz she had Cristina's side but wanted his... and she is chatty kathy but... Der is fast asleep on her shoulder. AW..... This episode left me liking REED... I loved how she knew what Alex was feeling and she was looking out for him. She tells him to go... cuz if not then he will regret it... Izzie does not show up to her 10 oclock appointment... and we see Alex with tears in his eyes... Reed walks up and she gives him comfort. Alex did his part... NOW... who is not MAD at Izzie? I am!!! I was soo upset she did not show up. This just left me SPEECHLESS... I know this episode was truly mainly all about DER... but it ROCKED... and I was INSPIRED!!! Chandra Wilson is my redeemer... she help create this episode and I loved it!!! I so hope she gets her chance to give us more... I so want more!!! So next week... more DRAMA... Bring it ON!!! |

http://www.buddytv.com/articles/greys-anatomy/greys-anatomy-give-peace-a-cha-32279.aspx 'Grey's Anatomy' 'Give Peace a Chance' Recap - The Mother of All Tumors and Diapers Thursday, October 29, 2009 You know it's a tumor-centric Grey's Anatomy episode when scary sound effects reverberate when people discuss the mother of all tumors / the great white of tumors / the you-can-retire-on-this-tumor tumor. On "Give Peace a Chance" the hospital's lab-tech Isaac has an inoperable tumor and everyone is thrilled / amazed at it, probably in spite of themselves, since a tumor's supposed to be a bad thing, right? But Derek's (Patrick Dempsey) hubris / determination is at an all-time high, so he's up to the challenge of taking on a nearly inoperable tumor. The Chief (James Pickens, Jr.) obviously won't hear any of it and points this out to him quite emphatically. Unfortunately for him, the rest of the hospital - most notably Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) - are all in Team Derek and stopped short of tackling the chief just so he wouldn't interfere with the 10-hour super surgery. Derek versus the tumor versus the Chief It's no secret to everyone that Derek is being offered the Chief's job, so already that's not a very good foundation of a working relationship. When he goes on consulting to the chief about the tumor, obviously, he doesn't like it. But Derek is one determined doctor who probably already considers himself equal with the Chief, so he proceeds with the surgery. The first attempt isn't successful, and he ends up standing in the OR staring at the problem area for ten hours. Thanks to Callie (Sarah Ramirez) spilling the beans, the Chief goes to the OR like a party-busting cop. Unfortunately, Derek appears to not be on this dimension and cannot be reached. But with the Chief blaring in his ear, he goes back to this world and stops the operation. Spell anticlimactic. On his second attempt, he gets permission from the Chief by lying that he's just going to do a routine surgery on Isaac. More hours are put in the OR and it's stretching way beyond the pretend surgery. Then suddenly Derek is all "Take off my mask! Take off my mask!" after which, he pukes. Lexie (Chyler Leigh) wants him to drink some water but for some unfathomable reason, he refuses. Good thing Lexie puts her foot down and goes all water Nazi on him. When the other doctors' cover-up falls and the Chief gets wind of the secret surgery, he once again begins charging to the OR. But Arizona blocks his way and goes, "You don't get to go in there and be a bully. Not on my watch." And slowly, the Chief backs away. Hilarious. In the end, it comes down to which cord to cut, the blue one or the red one, so naturally, Derek, the world's foremost neurosurgeon, resorts to eeny, meeny, miny, moe. He proceeds to make the cut, and everyone is plastered and cannot move. To the eternal torment of negative people (like me), the surgery is successful. So that means, Derek - 1, the Chief - 0, right? But the Chief proceeds to drop the bomb - he tells Derek he's fired. Weirdly, Derek doesn't panic and instead admonishes him to go home and think about it. He also goes home to a giggling Meredith with a bottle of champagne, but he dozes off right away. Diaper-wearing Cristina and Owen Cristina (Sandra Oh) is turning out to be Grey's Anatomy's comic relief. First she is all smug and yawning and stuff at the skills lab when Derek is picking people to scrub in for the super surgery. Then later on, she gives a pretty ridiculous rant about diapers and NASA-style surgeries to Lexie (Read: "I want to have to pee in a diaper!") Owen (Kevin McKidd) assigns her to a ten-hour surgery, but this is canceled because of Derek's even more super surgery. Walking away, she reveals that she's wearing diapers. Reed and Alex - Bonding? Alex (Justin Chambers), who spends the whole episode trying to call MIA Izzie (Katherine Heigl), once again breaks down at the end of the episode in that heartbreaking way of his. And understandably so, but what's surprising is the person who consoles him - Reed (Nora Zehetner), one of the invaders. So maybe the title is in reference to this little weird bonding? What did you think of this episode? Do you think Derek is out of line? Or is the Chief just being a crybaby dinosaur? Do we think Arizona was awesome for a change? |

I agree it was an awesome episiode. Derek was great in it, when Cheif fired him at the end my mouth dropped. LOL I'm not mad at Izzie, I'm upset that she has left Alex hanging. But I am not mad at her. Izzie went for her treatment, but at a different hospital. I don't know that for a fact but that is what I am assuming. Why would she return to a hospital where she feels her friends betrayed her? I sure wouldn't. IMHO Izzie has gone to hell and back, she was at deaths door, she lost her best friend and then being fired put her over the edge. Don't forget she feels Alex betrayed her. WE ALL KNOW he didn't. But the Chief wasn't able to finish what he was saying. If you ask me, he shouldn't of said anything about Alex PERIOD. I really feel bad for Alex, he doesn't know what to think. I hope Izzie returns soon and things go back to normal for the 2. Doubtful, but you never know. I ABSOLUTELY loved Calizona, OMFG when Callie found out Arizona was guarding the door to prevent the chief from interupting Derek was hilarious. "Oh Good God" LMFAO! They have definintely become one of my favorite couples. Lexie and Cristina walking side by side in diapers was hilarious! Lexie has sure found her place amongst the staff. I loved this episode as well. I liked that it took one patient from beginning to end and spent time on it. I loved that all of the Attendings were behind Der, and I think that's where the problem with the Chief comes in. I think the Cheif is feeling like he is in the middle of "Mutiny on the Bounty". It makes me wonder what the board said to him about what he had to do to keep his job. In the past the Chief would have been pushing Derek to at least try, and now he is totally shutting him down. I'm not sure that Der wants Chief of Surgery, but the way Richard is acting, I can see how it would be hard for Der to continue to work for him. I look forward to seeing how this plays out the rest of the season. I loved Isaac, hope we see more of him. I enjoyed the interaction of Reed and Alex. I don't hate Izzie, just hate her actions. I absolutely loved the Mer/Der scenes finally more than what seems just seconds. I wonder what the board would say about Chief just firing the top neurosurgeon in the country? I liked that Derek told him to sleep on it. I love Arizona, and like seeing her interaction with the other attendings besides Callie. How she was strong with Richard, then cried on Callie's shoulder. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the "Indivdual" episodes turn out. |

Don't get me wrong, I feel for Alex too. THe poor guy has no clue what Izzie is up to, he is at a loss, Izzie has been his world and now shes gone. Plus how many times have we seen Alex cry? I can probably count on my one hand since the show started how many times. So when he started bawling at the end, I started to get choked up.

It was GENIUS! I felt and loved the high of Derek's interaction with the rest of the staff. This is one of the things I enjoyed about this episode the most. We got them working as a team, including attendings-residents. I also loved how Derek discussed everything with Meredith and put her in theme with the case... I don't think they will erase that from the wall, ever Lexie rocked and so did Cristina for encouraging her to wear a diaper. I really like how the relation between them has changed. I like the sort of bond that Alex and Reed had. I think it would be interesting to see them "bonding" more. There's something about their characters that makes me believe they can have some interesting interaction. There's more I could talk about from this episode, but I can't find the words right now Maybe I exaggerate, but this could be the best season for Grey's, so far. It's like... Grey's reloaded. We feel the same excitement for the team doctors and their personal lives as we felt in season one when most of them were getting started, as doctors and as friends. Loved it!!

yep... I understand EXACTLY... I am more upset of what this is doing to Alex than what Izzie is going through... let's hope she comes soon to explain herself... but I have a feeling its not going to be good news. Alex rarely shows this side of him... and if he does.. its only really been with Izzie??? So... it was good to see this side of him... |

**This is another point of view... I forgive the author for the typo's...** http://www.cinemablend.com/television/Grey-s-Anatomy-Recap-Give-Peace-a-Chance-20808.html Grey's Anatomy Recap: Give Peace a Chance By Amanda Krill: 2009-10-30 06:38:50 Grey's Anatomy Recap: Give Peace a Chance What a lovely treat! I love Meredith, but it was nice to hear a different voice opening the show this week. Derrick tells us that most people become surgeons because they enjoy the high, the god-like power it gives them – but not him. He did it because of the quiet of the surgical room. Obviously that isn’t the only reason he did it – he thoroughly enjoys helping people, and that’s obvious. This week, he’s locked in a battle of wills with the Chief over an employee of Seattle Grace who has the holy grail of tumors. Bailey describes it as a beautiful beast who could be enough to retire on. And it’s massive. It covers 5 levels of a dear man who works in the MRI lab – Isaac. He’s likable from the moment you meet him – when he shows Derrick the scans of the tumor without telling the brilliant surgeon that they are his own. The obvious excitement that Derrick has over the scans are exactly why Isaac wants him to operate on the seemingly inoperable tumor – and while everyone wants a piece of it, the Chief says no way. Derrick schedules it anyway. This surgery is extremely dangerous – but Derrick can’t resist. He goes “rogue” and everyone seems to know it but the chief. Derrick hosts a little competition to determine who will be his assistant. One of the Seattle Grace guys wins – the one with blue eyes. No clue what his name is…the point is that it isn’t Cristina, who was sure she had it locked in. Lexie pitches a fit because Derrick didn’t even invite her to the game – but he explains she already had a spot. They head into surgery, and Derrick explains to Isaac that if he can’t get it, he’s going to have to close him up. Which is basically to say that Isaac *will* die – either on the table or shortly thereafter. Isaac refuses to accept that – saying he’s been through more than Derrick could imagine. Isaac has been through a war, the death of his whole immediate family, the death of his wife and child, and if he has to survive the loss of his legs he will. Because he and Derrick are survivors who find the inspiration to live through whatever comes their way. After 10 hours of staring at Isaac’s back without making a cut, the Chief finds out what is going on – and demands that Derrick closes him up. Derrick gives in – but Isaac isn’t giving up. Isaac gives him the best advice – sleep on it, and we’ll talk tomorrow. When he gets home, he literally draws out the tumor on the wall for Meredith, and she tells him he knows what to do – or he would have just cut the spinal cord. She’s right – he did. The next morning he convinces the Chief that he can kill the tumor if he cuts the cord – so the Chief okays it. The secret is, he’s not going to cut the cord. He knows how to do it – and he’s going to. At the first cut, the monitor goes all beepy, but it calms down. And the surgery continues. There are a couple of close calls, and Derrick throws up from the pressure. As expected, the Chief finds out what is going on, and surprisingly enough, Arizona is the one who stops him from going in. Derrick successfully gets it all out – but has to cut one more vessel to keep it from feeding the tumor. He really has no idea which one. He makes the call, and…. Commercials – aargh! …Isaac is alive – and he wakes up crying because he can move his toes – which makes him think he still has the tumor. He cries even harder when Derrick tells him he got the whole thing, and he’s going to be just fine. (I’m crying too – people like Isaac are the ones who *deserve* to live) The side story is that Izzy is still gone, and Alex is still pissed. He is aware that she has a treatment coming up, but pretends like he doesn’t care. He does, and at the advice of Reed, he goes down and waits for her. She doesn’t show up. Alex is furious with her because she just didn’t show up for a treatment that saved her life. Reed’s there for him, and sadly, I bet they are going to end up together. By the end, the Chief has abandoned his newfangled scheduling system, and is hand scheduling the surgeries again. Derrick tries to work out his issues with the Chief, and the Chief tells him he’s fired. Derrick pulls an Isaac trick out of his bag, and tells him to sleep on it. Derrick goes home to his lovely wife, and promptly falls asleep before he can tell her about the surgery. |

Episode rocked! Derek was a rockstar! And looking good too! love how he moved teh bed and drew the diagram on the wall for mer to see rather than hear. Awesome. YOu guys said it all so no need for me to repeat. I love the arizona scene too with the chief. Glad she is on the show. Lexie and christina with the diapers...hilarious! Poor christina, not getting a surgery case yet, she's going crazy. It seems she's a hardhead and not see that surgery is not all that makes a doctor. She just wants to operate, not really save a life. She has yet to bond with a patient. I don't care much for jackson, he was a jerk to lexie but he ate crow later! but Reed, i can see something there, even though I thought she was sabotaging it so that she takes the glory. Of all people, a new worker is the one that comforts Alex. in the beginning I didn't like her much. But i guess her character can grow better than the other one that got fired. I dislike izzie more, i dont' care if she felt her friends and alex betrayed her, she's the type to confront than to just walk away, so that was lame to leave a letter. not even talk on the phone to tell alex off. I think it's more her empathy in losing a patient that caused her to walk away and her confusion with her cancer that mess with her profession. I never liked her, so that wont' change. And the chief described himself at best, a bully! but someone has to do it, he felt in the past he was too soft, and things went haywired. hopefully he will break down eventually. my thoughts to derek telling him he'll change his mind, made me think he'll get the chief position. it seems he's being groomed, with how he was being a great leader in the episode with the case. Chandra did an amazing, awesome job! i hope she does more, she brought back how the show use to be, intense, funny, and touching. |

http://www.greyswriters.com/2009/10/pete-nowalk-on-give-peace-a-chance.html Pete Nowalk on "Give Peace a Chance"... Original Airdate: 10-29-09 So there’s a lot to talk about here – the fact that this was an all-Derek-all-the-time episode, that this was Chandra Wilson’s first time directing, that Izzie's still MIA... But before I get into any of that, answer me this: You’re on a road trip. You’ve been driving for hours, your 3 kids all under the age of six are asleep in the backseat, when you realize you have to pee. Do you… A) Stop at a gas station, wake the kids, and drag them into the restroom in order to relieve yourself? B) Use one of your kids’ diapers, thereby allowing yourself to keep driving and let the kids keep sleeping? C) Stop reading this blog because you’re so disgusted by this topic? We played this game in the writers room one day. Shonda had seen an episode of Oprah where a mother confessed to doing B. (Here’s the link: http://www.oprah.com/article/oprahshow/20090311-tows-mom-truth/3). Naturally, we all went around the room debating what we’d do. Would we really use the diaper? Or would we do anything in the world to avoid said deplorable action? Some of us thought this mom was smart -- who wants to schlep a bunch of kids into a public bathroom? Others were a little horrified. Diapers are for babies. Or astronauts. Not grown adults who should know better. The diaper, you see, became a controversial topic around here. Okay, I know what you’re thinking. "That's your job? To sit around and have potty talk?? And now you’re admitting that to the entire blogiverse?????" I don’t blame you. But this is the way a writers room works. You chat, tell stories, discuss Oprah...until an idea hits. And then you work like mad to fit it into your episode. Hence, the diaper. Do surgeons really wear diapers? Well, depends who you ask. Our wonderful medical researcher Meg found a blog that mentioned surgeons wearing diapers during particularly long surgeries. And one of our consulting surgeons said dude surgeons sometimes wear condom catheters. (Yeah, that's a real thing apparently.) Point is, it wasn’t that big of a leap for us to go diaper. Our doctors are hardcore by nature. Combine that with the threat they're feeling from the Mercy West residents and you can understand while they'll do anything to win. As Lexie tells Jackson, if she needs to pee in a diaper to help Derek get through his impossible surgery, she'll pee in a diaper. Which of course just drove Cristina crazy jealous... Cristina was a shoe-in to win that pen-in-a-cup contest...but then she choked. Happens to the best of us. That left Owen having to cope with the fact that his girlfriend was fiending to put on a diaper. Admittedly, it's not the sexiest thing to picture your partner wearing. But I think it speaks to Owen's overall good nature that he found a way to be okay with it, even gifting Cristina her very own marathon surgery to cheer her up. And then, when Derek thwarts that plan, he goes as far as to sexily teach Cristina the right way to work the microscope. You gotta admit, the dude's a pretty awesome boyfriend. Speaking of awesome boyfriend... I'm sorry, I mean awesome husband... Derek Shepherd. This episode probably felt different. I only say that because that’s exactly how I felt the minute we started working on it. As you've probably noticed, we’re trying to experiment more this season. And that’s probably uncomfortable for some of you. It was for me. When we first decided to focus this episode solely on Derek and his patient, I was a little scared. Most of this patient story (inspired by a case told to us by Dr. Robert Bray, an amazing neurosurgeon here in LA) involves Derek staring at a tumor. Not cutting, not operating, not talking to anyone. Like I said, scary. In retrospect I’m really glad we told this story this way. As Derek says in the voiceover, what drew him to surgery was the quiet. The deep, intense, long-ass focus required to make it through a marathon surgery where any wrong turn can result in death. And this episode really reflects that. It’s quieter than a typical episode. More single-minded. Derek is our sole focus. And really, what an amazing character to spend an entire episode with. Watch Patrick Dempsey on your screen and you can’t help but be struck by how much he says without saying anything. The guy can pretty much give you an entire soliloquy with just one look. That’s a rare talent, and we really wanted to use that to our advantage in an episode about stillness and peace. It also seemed like the perfect time to do our Derek-focused episode since we had little time to shoot with Ellen Pompeo (8 1/2 months pregnant at the time we shot this one). Typically, if Derek's doing a once-in-a-lifetime neurosurgery, Meredith would be at his side. But since we couldn't physically do that, we had her be there for him in a different way -- by helping him talk through the problem, by holding a phone to her ear for 26 hours... (I'm guessing Cristina and Meredith have an unlimited friend-to-friend calling plan in case anyone was worried about their minutes). So Mer was there for Der even when it seemed impossible...and I'm very jealous. That's the truth. I’m jealous that Meredith and Derek get to work together and support each other and speak their secret surgery language together AND still actually love each other. I guess they’ve been through their fare share of relationship crap. They’ve earned a little peace. Still, I'm jealous. Back to the very different nature of this episode, helped along by the fact that there's still no sign of Izzie. She's still off god knows where and not telling Alex squat. Which is just harsh. Sure, the guy tried to pretend that he didn’t care whether she’d show up for her IL-2 treatment, but we all know that's just his way of coping. Who doesn’t show up for their life-saving IL-2 treatment? Especially a doctor?? That’s just irresponsible. And crazy… Yeah, I could go on. Poor frigging Alex. If I was Reed in that last scene I would have wanted to give the guy a hug. And I think the look on her face said pretty much that. But they just met. They’re not even friends. Or frenemies. No hugs allowed. Which is why that scene at the end with Alex sitting in the support chair with no one to support just kills me. WHERE THE HELL DID YOU GO IZZIE??? Okay, it’s a little insane for me to pretend I don’t know where she is. I do. And eventually you will, too. Onward... Last but not least, I'd like to applaud Chandra Wilson. She acts, she sings, and now she directs... and sometimes all at the same time. I have a feeling Chandra’s the kind of person that’s good at everything she does. You know the type from high school – the classmate that’s all quiet and unassuming and not saying anything about the Algebra test you’re freaking about because she already knows she’s gonna ace it. Cause that’s what Chandra did directing this episode. And it wasn’t an easy one to direct, let me tell you. All those scenes in the OR are very hard to shoot – very technical, very hard to dramatize -- and she rocked it. Alrighty then, I'm off to set to watch some scenes for episode 610 (our holiday episode, written by the awesome Krista Vernoff.) The end of this blog means the official end of episode 607 for me. In other words, my own sense of peace. I'll sleep well tonight. Hope you do, too. October 29, 2009 | Permalink |

More episodes like this!! I loved it. Derek was amazing He did great job. I was so happy when he was able to safe the patient thought everyone else said that it's impossible. And I loved that really long MerDer scene! Lexie and Christina wearing diapers was hilarious I didn't like Chief and Izzie. I hope they both leave the show I'm so mad at them right now.... |

I haven't read through this thread yet to see what everyone else thought, but I truly enjoyed this eppy. It was different. I liked the way we thought of Isaac as a real person and not just a random patient. It really made the viewer want a good ending for Isaac, whereas usually, we don't really think too much about the patient. I also liked that there wasn't so much focus on the whole MW/SG rivalry, cuz it's guna get old real quick. Edge: My mouth dropped at the end when Richard said that too! LoL I haven't seen promos for next week yet, so I dunno what's coming, but all in all, this was a good eppy. |

http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2009/10/greys_anatomy_the_definition_o.html Grey’s Anatomy: The Definition of Hard-core Photo: Craig Sjodin/ABC We’re delighted to find this week's episode revolving around Derek, especially after all those new Mercy Westers of the past two weeks. As we see Derek dressing for the day, giving Meredith (still recovering from liver surgery) a kiss goodbye, and heading off to Seattle Grace going on about his love of the operating room's quiet calm, we're glad to be back in the Derek-centric Grey's of yesteryear. When he and Cristina arrive at the hospital, the chief is announcing a new computer model for scheduling surgeries, boasting of its "efficiency and progress." This all sounds a bit like surgical communism, and we're not sure why we're supposed to care about Seattle Grace's scheduling system except that it has rearranged all the day's surgeries, and as a result, everyone's scrubs are in a bunch. Izzy is still MIA (Katherine Heigl went off to shoot a romantic comedy), Alex is taking out his frustration by being a jerk to everyone, and the new Mercy West girl pauses from her yoga session to call him a douche. We give her points for honesty, but the poor guy's cancer-stricken wife just left him. Cut the guy some slack! A hospital lab tech named Isaac has a tumor wrapped around his spinal cord, and he tells Derek that he got a job at Seattle Grace specifically to convince the doctor to operate on him. This is a bit creepy, especially because Isaac is smiling through all this. Pretty soon the whole gang is oohing and aahing over Isaac's bizarre MRI scans — no one as much as Cristina, who's dying to get in on the action. To choose who's going to scrub in with him, Derek holds a funny little competition involving a pen, a Styrofoam cup, and a dollar bill. (This sounds dirtier than it is.) Cristina fails, and the new Dr. Avery gets to scrub in instead. (We remember him as the attractive nude model from Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and even that image doesn't make him any less annoying.) Lexie also gets to scrub in as a backup of sorts — and decides that she can outlast everyone by wearing a diaper and therefore heading off bathroom breaks. Cristina finds Lexie mulling over her Depends, grabs them, and pumps her up like a coach before the big game: "This is the definition of hard-core. You're like an astronaut. This is surgery, NASA-style. Put these on, right now, I'll guard the door." And this is why we love Yang. The chief doesn't approve of the surgery, asserting that it's too risky and expensive, and he forbids Derek from operating. Of course this only makes Derek want to do it even more, so he goes “rogue” and goes forward anyway. Genius, right? Of course, a hullabaloo ensues. But at least Derek briefly gets to look like a badass. Umpteen hours of surgery later, Derek does the impossible and removes Issac's tumor (no way!); Cristina sulks, and Dr. Hunt consoles her; and Izzy, meanwhile, never shows up for her scheduled cancer treatment, which neither surprises nor bothers us, except that Alex is tormented by her loss, and the show was so much more fun back when he was just the cute guy having sex in the on-call room. Finally, the chief tells Derek's he's fired — but McDreamy just flashes him a suave smile and tells him to sleep on it. And because this is Grey's Anatomy, that should do the trick. |

http://tvwatch.people.com/2009/10/30/oh-my-greys-mcdreamy-goes-rogue/ Oh My Grey’s: McDreamy Goes Rogue October 30, 2009 When Derek is asked by a beloved co-worker to operate on the great white of tumors — an inoperable mass tangled around the spinal cord and tapped into the blood stream — he must overcome his nerves, deceive his boss and achieve the impossible. While it was mostly Der’s moment to shine, his fellow docs pitched in, proving once again that there’s no ‘I’ in team. –Carrie Bell Words of Wisdom: You can always count on Bailey to tell it like it is. When Der argued with the Chief about the new scheduling computer, she said, “You two need to stop bickering. It’s unattractive.” Under the guise of a consult, Isaac lured him with scans of the “perfect tumor.” McSteamy accused McDreamy of trying to earn daddy’s love back with the daring procedure, but the Chief actually told him not to go near the “beast, a malpractice suit waiting to happen.” Silent Treatment: Derek scheduled surgery behind the Chief’s back and set up a test to figure out who would be the best assistant. Yang was confident but lost out to Mercy West’s Avery. After a pre-op pep talk from the patient, Der cut and realized the mass was worse than they thought. He went in crazy circles, shouting, talking to himself and unable to proceed after 10 hours. The Chief shut him down when he caught him, but Isaac was still positive about Der’s skills and suggested he sleep on it and try again the next day. Diaper Rush: Yang encouraged Lexie’s stroke of genius to wear a diaper during the long surgery to avoid potty breaks. “You’re like an astronaut. This is surgery NASA-style.” Avery teased “Diaper Genie,” but Lexie owned it. “I’m going to wear it with pride,” she said. “You can kiss my hardcore diaper-wearing ass.” And Lex got the last laugh when Avery got cramped hands from skipping fluids and Derek had her fill in. Yang was jealous, wishing she had a surgery that required diapers, so Hunt found her one and she diapered up. Spousal Support: Stuck at home recovering, Meredith begged Der for details. Walking her through his day, he got a new plan of attack, so he scheduled another rogue attempt. This time, everyone played a part in the operation. McSteamy watched monitors. Hunt sacrificed the room. Lexie forced him to hydrate. Arizona kept the Chief away. “The most minor disturbance could cause him to make a mistake,” she said when he approached. “You don’t get to be a bully today.” It was touch-and-go throughout the procedure but Der eventually saved Isaac. Last Action Hero: Despite requesting that they stop fighting and move on, Der had to pay for his disobedience and the Chief fired him. Still Missing: Reed overheard Yang remind Alex that Izzie had another cancer treatment scheduled. She offered to do Der’s rounds in order to free him up to deal with Izzie. At first, he assumed she was still glory hunting so he did it, but she encouraged him to go when she noticed him checking his watch. “There’s a girl sitting down there waiting for her guy,” she pleaded before he explained that Izzie had left him. “You better be 100 percent sure because right now you’re making a choice, not her.” Reed showed a softer side by checking on him and found him in tears because “cancer wife” skipped it. Job Well Done: Last week may have been short on original cast members, but this week, we got a Derek-centric episode with a healthy dose of Yang, a meaty scene for Alex and a couple of Bailey zingers. Praise is in order for striking a better balance! |
