With a Title like that... we pretty much know what is going to be happening tonight. How will this merger HELP or HURT the beloved Seattle Grace employee's? I am looking forward to seeing who stand their ground and who will still be suffering from anxiety. Who will stay and who will go? I hope we get a few answers tonight... and I hope that through it all, we also get some funny drama. So bring on the laughter... bring on the friendships... bring on the bitter feuds... and entertain us. I know I am ready... come whatever may... I am ready! |

Ok I am confused. I thought Alex was trying to save Izzie's job at first, but then he went on to say that it may be too much for her. Was he trying to get the Chief to cut her first or what? I thought Alex was trying to save her job but the HR lady wouldn't allow the chief to finish. The Chief said that Alex has expressed concerns. Any idea?? LOL Loved the episode, the Mercy west folks deserve a kick in the a**, especially Charlie Brown. I was willing to bet that he set Izzie up on the kidney patient, who knows maybe it comes out that he does. Loved Cristina finding hard to hug Alex LMAO |

I didn't get to fully watch cause I'm outa town so I'll have to watch again when I get home on Sunday and then fully review but what I did see I really liked.....I get why they "fired" Iz, because that was the way Shonda was able to come up with a way for Katie to be on hiatus for her movie....I know she'll be back and then her and Alex can be happy again after the hump so I'm not worried at all....I do have a hard time with the Fab 5 going to the Fab 4 for to now the Fab 2 1/2 while Iz is gone and Mer gone for a bit with the rest of Ellen's maternity leave but soon enough both will be back and it will be atleast the Fab 4 plus Lex again....I HATE, I repeat HATE the Agent Orange people! They need to GO AWAY and NEVER EVER come back!!!! That's all I'm going to review on now cause that's all I really caught...more later. Oh P.S. LOVED MER/DER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Der's SO FREAKIN' CUTE and so in love *sigh* |

^ First off, Alex talking to the chief was not about him wanting the chief to fire her. It was about him wanting the chief to keep her because she needs the stability, her friends, the hospital to keep her going....And the chief yet again screwed things up. I get that he fired her, I knew it was going to happen. But he should have kept his freakin' mouth shut about everything else because he always gets his stories mixed up which creates more problems. This episode was a little frustrating to me just because I hate this merger thing. It's definitely going to bring a lot of drama and new stories back to the show, but all these new faces and less air time for the old faces is annoying. We barely saw Derek and didn't see Sloan at all! I loved Callie and Arizona's story. I got teary when Callie was screaming Bible versus right back at her dad and I loved when Arizona was talking to Callie's dad. Arizona rocks! Mer was cute trying to play mother hen with everyone. I hated Charlie. In fact I hated all the new residents and wish they would take their ugly orange scrubs and disappear. It broke my heart watching Alex cry in the end. I wish Mer would have told him to come lay down next to her because you knew Christina wasn't going to hug him. Next week's eppy looks way intense, but you can already tell that there are way too many faces on screen, again. Argh....how long do we have to bear with this merger?!!? Spoiler thread....here I come! P.S. What self respecting surgeon wears ORANGE scrubs??? Seriously?!?! P.S.S. Hope you guys watched the Private Practice crossover with Bailey. We got to see a little more about what's been going on with her and why she has been so....un-Bailey. Edited by McJen, Oct 16 2009, 06:54 AM.

I too was distracted and missed some of the beginning. So I will have to see it again. glad to see that lexie had some spunk when she stole the notebook yet remorse about it. her interaction with the patient reminded me of her and seth green lol. the new interns or residents whatever they are, are there to shake them up so they aren't comfortable with their position in seattle grace. i guess this is a ploy to not have the ruitine of them doing the same surgery stuff in every episode. but i hope it doesnt' drag for that long. because really if that's how it is in hospitals, i'd not want to step a foot inside it if the nurses/doctors are that competitive with each other. with izzie being gone, ugh, either she goes or she stays, but for them to do it right after she was close to death, lame in my opinion. what if later she decides to leave for good then what will they do? i think it's a easy way if katherine doesn't do so well in the movies. I think she should just go. I think she second guess herself when bailey chewed her out, and with bailey telling her that she killed the patient if kidney doesn't go through, that is cold to say. and cold that izzie just gave alex a goodbye letter after what alex has done for her without a reason. I love the callie and arizona scenes with teh father. preach it, callie! i did see mer's belly bump, i guess at this point they arent that concerned with hiding it since fans know she's pregnant, so cute how she was comforting christina. and christina, boy, all she cared was going into surgery and can't for awhile and miss burke mostly for that he takes her to them. wouldn't you call that favoritism? and poor alex shocked that this happened to him when things seem to be normal between him and izzie. and christina couldn't hug him, i don't like how they did this to alex, he's going to be more harsher, and he's going to take izzie back if she comes back, i highly doubt it. didn't get to see the preview for next week, but it seems intense. i saw pp crossover, bailey was cute lol, good to see what made her the way she has been. |

Good episode. Seattle Grace vs.Mercy West ![]() Finally Lexie had a good storyline! Usually she's really boring and I skip all her scenes but today I didn't have to. I liked that Callie's dad came back and Arizona spoke with him ![]() I didn't like that there wasn't much Mer/der scenes. Only one but it was goood. And where was Mark? I didn't see him in this episode... I didn't understand the ending. Where did Izzie go? Did she got fired?? |

Now we have a new storyline, a different drama. I liked it, though I really wanted to kick some orange as**s. They are good doctors, a great competition for the Seattle Grace staff, but there's one major difference between them which will kick some oranges out of Seattle Grace... our guys work as a team and cover each other's back, while Mercy West are individuals and they might start working against each other. I agree with Izzie getting fired; cancer is not an easy disease and she doesn't need the stress of such competition. I wonder how will they re-hire her. Probably they will recover financially and re-hire most of the people they had fired. I loved the short scene with MerDer though I have to admit that I had freaked out a little when I saw that Mercy West doc giggling with Derek, but then their scene came and you can see how much he loves her and how strong their relationship is now. The scene between Arizona and Callie's dad was one of my favorites. Really good way of pointing out the father-daughter relationship and I am glad he tries to accept the situation. I am really curious to see what comes next for our characters. I won't miss Izzie much, so I am satisfied with the way this season is going, so far. |

Gosh... What can I say... There is way too much ACTION going on and its very confusing and yet almost laughable. I mean... I hated all the new people... I was trying to give them a chance but then I ended up only liking the one that Lexie was feeling sorry for. "By the way I noticed"... hee hee At first I was thinking this Charlie was kind of sort of like George... in a few ways until he truly showed his TRUE colors. I loved that Izzie dropped the coffee at his feet. I wanted to get a SHARPIE/MarksALot marker and go making jack-o-lantern faces on the damn ORANGE SCRUBS... they all were annoying me. I have to say that I felt Alex was trying to help Izzie... he was trying to play on the Chiefs emotions but we are finding out that the Chief is having to be strict... and I wonder how much of this he is going to take. The whole firing from an e-mail thingy... I knew it was going to cause an uproar. Now they are getting sued. I am not surprised it was Izzie the first to go... but the way she left? OMG... I can not STOP to think how much I am not liking her even more now. Poor Alex... he does not deserve that... a damn note that she left him? I heard somewhere that her leaving was going to be a winning performance... What kind of performance was that? I mean yes the woman can act but heck... I think she lost a few more fans with the note. She mad a mistake... they all have made mistakes... but this time around I hate saying this but I think she did deserve to be let go. AS much as I hate it... I truly think she needed healing time before she threw herself back into work. Owen and Der were concerned of her coming back too soon... WOW that blew my mind when the Chief said that. My heart went out to her... but yet you could tell her mind was not clear. Heck... none of their minds are thinking clearly because of this darn merger. Its hurting the hospital rather than helping. The strong points in this episode to me where... Callie/Arizona/Callie's Dad and Mer/Der. Callie's Dad comes back and brings the family Priest. This was hilarious. "You can not pray the gay out of me"... and her Dad quoting the bible... like Caroleen text me "Callie Bible Thumped him"... she sure did... "Jesus this and Jesus that"... heck Callie was the ROCKSTAR tonight. She was upset with her Dad... but Arizona was her backbone... she helped Callie see that she needs to be patient with her Dad... Callie just sprung this on him... and when Arizona talked with Mr. Torres... OMG... I loved that moment... She explained her namesake... she was named after a battleship and that through it all she was "A MAN left standing" and her explanation was amazing... and not only did I grow to love her more... I am in AWE with her. She is truly an inspiration for Callie. In the end Mr. Torres talks with Callie and tells her that no matter what he will always be there to catch her... its what he does... its his job. I cried... I completely loved that moment. Callie finally has her acceptance. She finally can move forward. Mer playing the Mother and wanting to know what is going on... Loved the way she got soo engrossed in everyones business... and the TV... hee hee When Cristina finally broke and said she missed Burke... OMG...cuz I was feeling the same way. Cristina was at her best when he was around... now she is lost. I really felt bad for her when Owen took her off the surgery. Heck can these doctors not see that everyone is not working to their ability due to the stress this merger is putting on them? But I guess this is the way they want it... to see who can work under pressure... true pressure. I was missing Sloan... maybe I need to rewatch cuz I am truly not remembering see him at all? Loved the Lexie and patient moments... the robber who was trying to help Lexie beat the other ORANGE invader... stealing her journal... but then Lexie being Lexie made her point loud and clear... it was not right what they did... and so she goes and apologizes. Bailey... our strong Bailey... I felt soo bad for her patient and the kidney. I was actually siding with her when she was telling Izzie the truth. Izzie upset with the invaders and then the cubbie... geez... I was also wanting to SMACK that one... taking the locker... George's locker. Not sure I will be able to move on... but I know I need to... and so does everyone else... but loved that he is missed. I know Izzie is going through HELL and BACK... and I do in a way feel bad for her... but heck I was switching my emotions back and forth cuz I was truly thinking she needs time to heal... and I felt her being there with the INVADERS was only hurting her more... The INVADERS have to go... I want those PUMPKINS to get swooshed... but then I was thinking... which ones would I be ok with... and I tell you I was hating that Owen and Der were impressed with them. I know they are good at what they do... but I still hated them. hee hee When Izzie finally put CHARLES in his place... I thought there was hope... but it seems to get darker and darker. Mer trying to talk to Cristina and throws the tissues... loved it. Cristina finally goes to the bed and lays with Mer... such a touching moment. Then when Alex walks in... I was in tears... Poor Man... then Mer tells Cristina to go hug him... and her looks... I SO LOVED MER... and then finally she walks to him... he backs away... and then we hear "Or maybe not"... Geez... What is going on... keeps going through my mind? I mean it feels like an old western watching animals (lets say wild horses) being corralled and such a small space. Kicking and nudging their way... I honestly felt a little claustrophobic... the beginning we saw our old interns looking down from the stairs at the new INVADERS... and the episode ends with the INVADERS looking down from the stairs at the hospital. As if they got what they want... REMEMBER this is not their hospital like Mer said... Come on Grey's... give us some head strong doctors... Give me Mer/Cristina/Izzie/Alex/Lexie being hard nosed and WINNERS... Bailey/Owen/Der seem to be ok... its the others I am concerned about. So Izzie is fired? Something tells me she will be back... cuz she will come back even better and in her ROCKSTAR attitude. Shonda give us our people back!!! But if we have to keep some of the ORANGE GOONS... I still do not think any of them fit the bill... except the one with the gorgeous eyes that tackled the Father... Who was that? I still have no clue on any of their names... but he caught my eye. hee hee Loved the Mer/Der parts... heck each time he was kissing her she was SMILING... I felt like saying "GIVE ME JUST 5 MINS WITH THAT MAN"... and then the hot flashes take over. hee hee Loved the show but was irritated by a few things... and I am guessing you all can tell which ones? I over all enjoyed the episode. Poor Mer stuck in her room, not knowing what's going on. I loved her pep talk. I didn't like that they threw the Mercy West people right into the fray. In episode 3 Derek mentioned to the Cheif, Izzie working herself to exhaustion to the detrement of her health, and last week Owen saying he wasn't sure Izzie was ready to be back. I think Alex was trying to help, but with the error with the kidney patient, once again Izzie let her emotions take over. I understand why she was fired, when cuts have to be made, no one can afford mistakes. I understood the Attendings trying to not show favortism, but Owen totally disregarded that the patient was Cris's and gave the surgery to Jackson. I love the way SO is playing Cris as practically losing her identity. When we first saw pictures of the new characters, I mentioned that the actor playing Charles had a vague resemblence to George. They played that up last night, then had him turn on Izzie. The only newbie I liked was Jackson (ER Tackle). I will still give the others a chance, but I don't want them shoved down our throats, let them find their own footing in the program without stepping on the established residents. I'm definitely going to have MerDer withdrawals, I need more than a few minutes of them a show. I would have liked to see Derek give Meredith his opinion of the new comers, but loved him just showing her love. The favorite part of the show for me was Arizona and Mr Torres, loved learning more about Arizona and the way she protects those she loves. |

http://blog.zap2it.com/ithappenedlastnight/2009/10/greys-anatomy-izzy-gets-fired-and-hector-elizondo-guest-stars.html 'Grey's Anatomy': Izzy gets fired and Hector Elizondo guest stars By Carrie Raisler October 15, 2009 8:42 PM Tonight on "Grey's Anatomy": the Mercy West doctors arrive, and the scene is completely Jets vs. Sharks, except with much less singing and dancing. Tonight's theme is all about invasion, as the influx from Mercy West begins, and on first glance they are quite interesting. One of them is the hot guy from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2!! (Um, not that I've seen that movie. In the theater. On opening weekend. Moving on!) Another is the awesome Nora Zehetner from Brick! And yet another is the extremely amazing Sarah Drew from Everwood and Mad Men! Is it strange that I already like the newbies more than the regular cast, even though they haven't had one lick of dialogue yet? Back to the matters at hand. The merger gets off to a rocky start when cocky young doctor Reed (Nora Zehetner) refuses to take her stuff out of George's old locker., almost causing a throwdown between her and Izzy. Aw, watching Izzy get feisty in the locker room reminds me of the good old days when I didn't hate her. Due to the sheer volume of cases in the hospital, the Seattle Grace and Mercy West crew are paired up and assigned "zones" to handle the mob scene. The cases are almost secondary this week, used as props to showcase how the new Mercy West gang are one-upping the Seattle Grace crew at every opportunity. Lexie and Mercy West-er April (Sarah Drew) work together on the case of a burglar injured during the act, leaving him with a broken back. When Lexie is one-upped by the conniving April on the suggested course of treatment, her thieving patient helps her out by stealing April's notebook. In this notebook, Lexie discovers not case notes but self-pep talk notes April uses to bolster her flagging self esteem. Lexie cruelly uses the knowledge to tear April down, but immediately feels bad about her actions. She ends up apologizing to April, if you can call telling a person you dislike them but know you did them wrong and never actually saying the words "I'm sorry" an apology. Cristina and Mercy West-er Jackson are working together to save a man stabbed by his friend for having a relationship with the friend's 19-year-old daughter. Although Cristina technically saves the patient's life by fixing the stab wound, Jackson gets all of the credit for doing some heroic tackling when the patient is threatened again by his friend. Cristina ends up in a crying fit in Meredith's hospital room over the downward spiral of her career, and how she felt alive when she was working with Burke and holding hearts in her hands every day. Now she feels none of that, she just feels lost. Why doesn't she just go back to cardiothoracic? Hahn isn't there to hold her back any longer. Alex and Mercy West partner Reed spend the hour fighting over a man with both an adrenal mass and carotid stenosis. Alex and Reed are extremely antagonistic from the start, going so far as to argue about care in front of the patient and his daughter (Kathleen Wilhoite). In turn, the daughter rightfully yells at them and snaps them out of it...for about twenty seconds until they start up again. Izzy and Mercy West-er Charles (Robert Baker) get paired up on Sarah Freemont, a young woman in desperate need of a kidney transplant and down to her last access point for dialysis. They seem to be getting along swimmingly until Izzy overhears him bragging to his Mercy West friends about her being his "surgical bitch." In the midst of their troubles, Izzy almost kills patient Sarah by ordering a bum procedure and causing her to code. Bailey manages to save the patient, but because of her troubles she will lose her chance at the transplant kidney she's been waiting three years for. Chief has to get down the the nasty business of firing people, and HR insists he use a specific speech because the last person he fired (the pregnant intern) is suing for wrongful termination. Who's getting the ax? None other than Izzy, who gets chopped for mishandling the kidney transplant patient. Considering she got a total free pass on the LVAD debacle, I can see why she's surprised. Still, she got a total free pass on the LVAD debacle, so it makes sense for her to be "on notice" for her next big mistake. She takes it extremely hard, to the point where she skips town and leaves Alex via a note taped to his locker. I suppose if Meredith and Derek can get married via post it Alex and Izzy can get divorced via a Dear John letter. I do feel horribly sorry for Alex, and Justin Chambers played his reveal scene superbly. Off in her own world is Callie, whose Dad (Hector Elizondo) shows up wondering why they don't talk anymore. Perhaps because you were a complete jerk last time you were there, Pops? Just a thought. Turns out he's only there to "pray away the gay" from Callie, complete with his priest in tow for support. Callie is disgusted, but Arizona urges her to cut him some slack since her news was so shocking. They sit down to talk, but when her father starts using God to show Callie why her lifestyle is wrong, she perfectly throws everything back in his place by herself using the words of Jesus. Nicely played, Callie. Arizona talks to Callie's father and makes him see that Callie is still the same person, the person he raised. This makes him see the light, and he makes amends with Callie in the end. Favorite quotes: * "You think you can pray away the gay." - Callie, to her father * "Of course, you were here when that psycho intern cabal was chopping out each other's organs. That must have been scary." - April, to Lexie |

Another Cool Review: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2009/10/greys-anatomy-mercy-west-is-in-izzie-stevens-is-out.html In Thursday night's "Grey's Anatomy," we finally met the enemy: Mercy West interns and residents stormed Seattle Grace. I'll get this little rant over with right from the start: Why does Shonda Rhimes love to pit her doctors against one another? In the beginning the interns were fighting over surgeries. Then they fought over solo surgeries. Then they fought over specialties. There was even a storyline where the top surgeons in the hospital were grappling for the Chief's job like kindergarten kids fight over the coolest toy on the playground. I'm sick of it! It's childish and they're compromising their patients. I rolled my eyes when Alex stole lab results in order to hijack a patient. It's such childish behavior. Someone send these people to the time-out chair, please. Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about the Mercy West influx! Meredith compares them to multiplying bacteria in her voice-over intro, but I have to say, I kind of like the little germs. I did find it absurd that the Mercy Westers were all dressed in orange scrubs. I realize that it was an attempt to set up a more obvious division, but really, did they think we wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the new doctors and the ones we've been watching for five years now? When the Seattle Grace residents watched in horror as the Westers swarmed the floor, it reminded me of that scene in "E.T." when the government agents descend on Elliot's house in their hazmat suits. As if the orange scrubs weren't enough, each Seattle Grace doctor was paired with a Mercy West newbie. Let the games begin. Is this "Grey's Anatomy," or did I accidentally change the channel and land on MTV's latest "Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Emergency Room"? It seemed as though they set Reed (Nora Zehetner) up to be the bad guy when she stole George's locker and refused to budge even after Izzie asked her to. Was I the only one who found it hard to sympathize with Izzie when she subsequently freaked out? I do miss George's presence on the show, and I understand that he was Izzie's best friend, but Izzie overreacted. As a doctor, she should be better equipped to cope with death. Plus, it's just a cubby. It's not like Reed parked her car on his grave and drew a mustache on his last photo. One of my favorite Mercy Westers is intern April (Sarah Drew). I loved Drew on The WB's "Everwood," and I'm thrilled to see her again, in a very different role this time. Her saccharine-sweet attitude and wide-eyed insincerity were hilarious, as was her super-mysterious hot pink notebook full of morale-boosting platitudes. Personally, as long as she's a good doctor and doing her job, I don't care what it takes for her to keep her self-esteem up during the day, whether it's a notebook or a nose-job. Calliedad I was happy to see Callie's family story revisited. Last we saw Mr. Torres, Callie told him that she was in love with a woman and their once-strong relationship crumbled instantly. In Thursday night's episode, her father flew across the country with a priest and a handful of Bible quote flash cards. Callie was furious when she discovered his intentions. "You think you can pray away the gay? You can't pray away the gay!" she shouted in the hospital waiting room. While it may not have been the most appropriate choice of locations for her exclamation, it's a pretty catchy turn of phrase. I expect to see that one on plenty of protesters' signs this year. By far the best moment in this episode was Arizona's scene with Callie's father, Mr. Torres. Jessica Capshaw has an incredible ability to take even the most melodramatic of "Grey's" speeches and deliver them with a subtlety and an honesty that makes them come off as sincere instead of overwrought. "I was named for a battleship," she said, and in the powerful monologue that followed, she calmly and carefully explained that Callie was still the woman Mr. Torres raised. It was really beautiful. And last, but certainly not least, we must address this episode's big "shocker." In the final moments, Chief Richard Webber fired Izzie Stevens. I'm a big fan of Katherine Heigl and I'm sad to see her go, but Izzie deserved it this time. She's temperamental and she's not acting rationally. She's still recovering not only from the cancer treatment, but from the death of her best friend. Izzie was shocked, initially assuming that she was being fired for having cancer. It turns out that her goof with the kidney patient -- a mistake she made, unsurprisingly, while her judgment was clouded by petty competition -- is what cost her her job. "You let me come back after I cut an LVAD wire!" she shouts. Uh, maybe I'm wrong, but I'd guess that announcing your prior egregious errors of judgment while begging for your job is slightly counterproductive. Chief begins to explain his decision, mentioning that other doctors had questions about her stamina and emotional stability -- among them her husband, Alex. And thus, we come to the episode's true shocker. It was previously reported that Heigl would be taking a five-week leave of absence from "Grey's" to work on a movie and to bond with her newly adopted daughter, Naleigh, so Izzie's release from Seattle Grace was a given. I wasn't expecting her to actually leave Karev, though -- and especially not in a hastily written note stuck on his locker. That's how you break up with your seventh-grade boyfriend, not the husband who stuck by your side through cancer (and creepy ghost-sex). Alex's reaction was the perfect mix of devastation and disbelief, as were Meredith's and Christina's. I can't wait to see what kind of reception Izzie gets when she comes back in a few weeks. A few days ago, Shonda Rhimes tweeted: "Things may happen, but [Alex and Izzie] are meant for each other. Remember that." Hmmm. What did you think of Dr. Stevens' dramatic exit? Did you think she deserved to be the first of our beloved residents to get the boot? Talk about it in the comments below. While you're at it, let me know what you thought of Arizona's speech and the bright orange Mercy West incursion. Be sure to check back next week! I'm looking forward to seeing how Alex picks up the pieces. Is he going to stick it out in that bear-bait trailer all by himself? --Carina MacKenzie |

Hate the Mercy West People. Hate the way the chief is acting lately. Hate there being too many people for anyone to actually shine. Hate the little-girl-lost Cristina. Don't care that Izzie was fired. Hope she doesn't come back. Hate that Alex is in pieces because of it. Love Callie/Arizona and Callie's dad now that he's got his head around things. Hate that Sloan was totally MIA! Love Lexipedia getting mean on the other girl. Hate the chaos of the busy hospital. Hate the ORANGE PRISON ISSUE JUMPSUIT SCRUBS!!!!! But, I'm still watching.. so that's one thing. |

http://www.greyswriters.com/2009/10/mark-wilding-on-invasion.html Mark Wilding on 'Invasion'... Original Airdate: 10-15-09 I’m sure most of you have been fired at some point in your life. I have. In fact, I’ve been fired at several points. Mostly from TV shows. Mostly for a job poorly done. I’ve been fired over the phone, in person, just before major holidays, a few months after I bought my first house – I’ve been fired a bunch. The people who fired me all had the usual litany of predictable reasons for letting me go. Budget considerations, you don’t write the voice of the show, we’re going a different direction. Every tortured explanation designed to make you feel better about yourself. And every one pretty much a lie. Because when they fire you the truth is they just don’t want you. After it’s done, after the axe has fallen, there’s a predictable process to the whole thing that’s pretty much time-honored. At least in Hollywood. First, you make sure the surviving writers don’t see you (it would be like Death coming to call). Second, you immediately go home to your wife or girlfriend or dog and get their sympathy. Third, you say the show was never for you anyway. And fourth, you return on the weekend to gather your things. It works that way for everyone. Executives, writers, actors, directors, assistants – if you work in Hollywood you will get fired and go through that humiliating scenario as sure as the sun comes up in the morning. My favorite firing (at least of me) took place many years ago on a set made to look like Central Park. It was the one they used on “Seinfeld”. I wasn’t on “Seinfeld” at the time. I was on a different show but I had a view of the park. A very good view. A good enough view where I could witness several of the writers of the show I was on being escorted to a little wooden bench in the fake park and told their services were no longer needed. I watched this grim scenario unfold over a couple of days from my office in the bungalow on the show where I thought I was still employed (the show shall go nameless, as shall the name of the person who fired me --- good news though, that person was fired from a show recently and it made my heart sing with joy). A week passed and I believed I’d escaped being fired and so thought nothing of it when I sat on that same wooden bench to have a sandwich one day. Halfway through my sandwich I looked up to find my boss standing over me and telling me that I didn’t seem very happy on the show. I took a bite of sandwich and then replied that, no, indeed, I was happy on the show. And he said no, I don’t think you are happy. And THAT’S when I realized – in that very moment -- that I WAS SITTING ON THE FIRING BENCH and that maybe he wasn’t out there to have lunch with me. And I was fired. All of which brings me to the toughest firing we’ve probably ever seen at Seattle Grace. That of Izzie Stevens… Yup, Izzie is gone. Fired by the Chief who, these days, is looking for the slightest excuse to fire ANYONE. Maybe she went back home. Or to visit friends. Or just took off for points unknown. But yes, people, Izzie Stevens, third year resident and surgical rising star, no longer works at Seattle Grace/Mercy West. The hospital, new name and all, is in her rear view mirror. George’s death, her stage four cancer, coming back to work too soon – it all proved too much – and now she’s headed off to God knows where. And it was heartbreaking to see her get fired, to see her plead for her job but firings are pretty much always horrible. And I wanted the scene to convey that sudden sense of loss, of hopelessness, and with the help of Katie Heigl’s fantastic acting, I think it did. But more on Izzie and the broken-hearted Alex later. The theme of the episode was “Invasion”. It seemed appropriate. New doctors were coming over from Mercy West. Callie’s Dad was paying an unwelcome visit to the hospital with the family priest in tow. Billy the Burglar got beat up after he broke in to or “invaded” a golfer’s house. And Arizona based her whole speech on the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor – which was also an invasion of sorts. All sorts of folks were coming from the outside and invading our people’s space. The first time we see Jackson Avery, he’s jogging towards the hospital, almost running into Cristina. And then the next thing you know he’s leaning across Alex in the elevator to choose his floor. Annoying! Invasive! Just plain…rude! And from her sick bed, where she’s recovering from her liver donation to Thatcher the previous week, an undaunted Meredith has taken charge. “This is our ship!” The question is, are our people up for the fight? Well first, let’s talk about those new residents, the doctors they’re going up against… Reed, Charles, April and Jackson. The Mercy West crowd. Who are just as insecure and uncertain about their new situation as our people. And our residents are understandably nervous because, like any invader, these MW guys are a threat. They’re smart, they fight dirty if they have to and, like our residents, they’re not going down without a fight. Of course, our people don’t know that at the beginning of the episode. But they sure do by the end. They’ve been in a helluva dog fight. When we see Mercy West’s orange-clad foursome at the end of the episode, surveying their surgical domain from the exact same place where our people were at the beginning of the episode, we know that they’re here to stay. They’re just as determined to make this their new home as our people were when they first came to the hospital. The new actors – their real names are Nora, Robert, Jesse and Sarah -- were a blast to work with. I probably should have known all their credits and what shows they’ve been on before we started shooting but I didn’t. And none of that mattered because they were all so strong. And then when I saw them on screen, they looked great and were wonderfully believable as real doctors. Which was a great relief and should make for a fun rest of the season. So, let’s talk about the pairings. Lexie and April. We got to see a new side of Lexie. One who could fight dirty and be a mean girl if she had to be. That is until the passive-aggressive April herself is undone when she finds out Lexie has read her notebook with all her little self-help homilies. That’s when Lexie softened. Which is what you do when you’ve trumped someone that badly. When you’ve kicked their obnoxious ass all over the place. After all, you can only be so gleeful in victory. When Lexie sees April tear up outside the scrub room, it makes her realize that even though April’s been pretty obnoxious throughout, maybe we’re not who we are in our worst moments. Maybe we’re, hopefully, something better. Charles and Izzie. Izzie thinks that she’s found someone who maybe just maybe, reminds her a little of George. Certainly not a complete George replacement but someone who’s as charming and self-deprecating. And might someday be a good friend. And it goes to Izzie’s trusting instincts and her need to fill the void left by George that she quickly gloms onto a sympathetic soul like Charles. But, as the Chief tells her later, it’s a different era. The old rules don’t apply – be it with friendships or with jobs. A lesson that Izzie learns not just once in this episode, but twice. First when Charles brags about her being his surgical bitch and, second, when she makes that terrible medical mistake. Jackson and Cristina. I liked them going toe to toe and especially loved Cristina finally deciding to hold up the white flag of surrender. Throwing in the surgical towel. We’ve been hinting in the previous episodes that without a Cardio God, she just doesn’t have her heart in it anymore. And as for Sandra Oh -- in the scene when she’s crying with Meredith (and pining for Burke), well, my God, she was superb. Alex and Reed. As Izzie says in the residents lounge at the start of the episode, Reed is not a big person. Still, as Alex finds out, she can flat out play this game. As much as I loved their competitive dynamic, each trying to outmaneuver the other one, I also liked showing our doctors as less than compassionate with their patient. I’ve visited a number of hospitals in the last few years and I’ve invariably found that our make-believe doctors generally pay much more attention to their patients than the real-life ones. It IS a struggle to have your voice heard in hospitals, to not be ignored. Sometimes they treat you less like a patient and more like, well, an invader. Of course, I might be holding them to a higher standard because my only reference point is a pretend hospital. Now, back to Izzie and the Chief and Alex. When you tell the Chief of Surgery that you NEED this job, that you’ve got nothing else in your life, DESPITE the fact you’re married, you are in a very, very bad state indeed. I understand the part about sneaking off without telling anyone after you’ve been fired (see above) but to just leave your husband a note – that’s brutal. No wonder Alex has issues. Every time he puts himself out there, gets close to someone (remember Ava?) the poor guy gets knocked back on his heels. By the way, in the firing scene, that beautiful shot when we come around Izzie to see all the emotions playing on her face was designed by the show’s director, Tony Phelan. His idea was to really get inside her emotionally at that moment. Tony had a lot of other great ideas for the episode. Ideas I would never have thought of because I’m not a director and Tony is. (I mostly just sat there and said “Good idea, Tony. Hey, they’re making omelettes. You want me to get you an omelette, Tony? You sure? Because they’re really good omelettes. I’ve already had two but they’re so good I may have a third. Are you sure you don’t want one, Tony?). Tony’s also one of the writers on our show. He is multi-talented. I am not. Still, everything you see in this blog was my idea. NOT Tony’s. If he does have ideas about it, frankly, he can keep them to himself. Give him all the credit you want for the episode, but this blog, my blog, is where I draw the line. Finally, I want to talk about Callie and Arizona. Shonda came up with the idea of Mr. Torres showing up with the family priest. I immediately said YES because anytime I can see Hector Alizondo on my TV screen, I’m all for it. In the scene where he’s quoting the Bible at Callie, he really is afraid he’s going to lose her. He’s desperate, yanking out those index cards like her very life depends on it. It was Hector’s idea to use the cards. He didn’t think his character would know that stuff of the top of his head, which is how I originally wrote it. And he was right. And it worked beautifully. And that final scene when he and Callie are outside the hospital and he’s asking her if she’ll still get married, still have kids… I really, really liked that scene. And I really, really liked their whole story. All told, I thought the episode came out pretty well. At least well enough for me not to worry about having to clean out my desk for another couple of weekends… |

I've been wondering the same question!!! It's like Addie's salmon only SO MUCH WORSE!!!!!!!

though I have to admit that I had freaked out a little when I saw that Mercy West doc giggling with Derek, but then their scene came and you can see how much he loves her and how strong their relationship is now.
