Categorized | Featured, Nielsen Overnight TV Show Ratings

TV Ratings:

FlashForward off to a good start, Survivor Samoa beaten in viewers for the first time in an eternity, but actually up versus last week despite the FlashForward premiere.

Fringe was down, but the night is definitely still up for FOX, who took third for the first official Thursday of the season.

Those predicting Grey’s Anatomy would pull adults 18-49 ratings similar to House – you were right, and I bow down to you! We’ll have to see the final tallies to know whether Grey’s or House was top scripted 18-49 show for the week. Either way, Grey’s put a whipping on CBS’ CSI and The Mentalist in terms of adults 18-49. But next week, The Mentalist will go head-to-head with Private Practice and should fare better.

Ratings highlights for FlashForward via ABC:

ABC took first place on the opening Thursday of the season in viewers and all key Adults (AD18-34/AD18-49/AD25-54), beating second-place CBS by 1.3 million viewers and by 57% in Adults 18-49. In fact ABC won all 6 half-hours of the evening in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. It was ABC’s 2nd straight year to lead the season-opening Thursday on both Nielsen measures.

ABC’s series debut of FlashForward won the 8 o’clock hour in viewers and young adults, beating out CBS’ time-period veteran Survivor: Samoa by 11% in Adults 18-49. FlashForward gained viewers and young adult audience throughout its telecast.

* Despite its early time period, FlashForward was the #2 TV show of the night in AD18-49, topping both CSI and The Mentalist, and behind only Grey’s Anatomy.
* In Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, FlashForward registered as the biggest drama premiere on any network in the 8 o’clock hour since January 2008 – since Fox’s debut of Sarah Conner Chronicles on 1/13/08, which had the enormous advantage of airing after an ultra-high-rated NFL playoff game on that night (Cowboys-NY Giants).
* In viewers and young adults, it was ABC’s best performance in the time period with regular programming in 20 months – since 1/31/08.

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast. For more information see Numbers 101 and Numbers 102.

Big Night for ABC

Published: September 25, 2009

Despite low ratings all summer in reruns, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” made a triumphant return on Thursday, attracting the night’s most viewers with 16.8 million from 9 to 11 p.m., according to Nielsen’s estimates. Although the ratings for the premiere were down by almost 2 million from that medical drama’s fifth-season debut a year ago (18.5 million), the results helped ABC win every time slot of the night, including the 8 p.m. hour during which the first installment of ABC’s “FlashForward” outperformed CBS’s “Survivor,” 12.4 million to 11.9 million. CBS was runner-up on the night, garnering 15.9 million and 14.3 million for season premieres of “CSI” at 9 and “The Mentalist” at 10. Fox ranked third with “Bones” at 8 (8.8 million) and “Fringe” at 9 (5.9 million), while NBC struggled in fourth place, earning low ratings for its comedy lineup. “The Jay Leno Show” at 10 saw its audience tumble to 5 million, its lowest level yet.

http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/10/02/tv-ratings-thursday-abc-wins-flashforward-greys-anatomy-stay-strong-private-practice-opens-big/29263

ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, now clearly the network’s flagship, stayed strong with a 6.0 adults 18-49 demo rating, well above the 9pm competition, and lead ABC to the win for the night. Private Practice debuted well, up from last year’s premiere, with a 4.5 demo rating. FlashForward dipped to a 3.7 demo rating, but still tied Survivor: Samoa for the hour.

At 8pm, FlashForward was down 10% in the demo from last week’s premiere (3.7 vs. 4.1), a nice trend for the second outing. Survivor: Samoa was steady and tied FF for the hours demo win. Bones slipped a tenth from last week’s 2.7 demo rating. Vampire Diaries held steady with a 1.7 18-49 demo, slipped slightly in overall adults 18-34 (1.65 rating vs. 1.75, but was up a tenth of a ratings point with CW’s target women 18-34 demo (2.65 vs. 2.55 ratings) and was second in that demo for the hour behind only ABC.

Both SNL: Weekend Update (1.8 vs. 1.7) and Parks & Recreation (1.9 vs. 1.8) picked up a tenth of a demo ratings point, performing just a bit less pitifully than last Thursday.

Grey’s Anatomy’s 6.0 18-49 demo rating at 9pm was down just 9% from its premiere numbers (6.0 vs. 6.6). After the decline of Desperate Housewives, Grey’s is head and shoulders ABC’s strongest show now. The Office slipped at tenth from last week’s 3.8 to a 3.7 demo ratings, but Community managed to increase its demo rating 7% (2.9 vs. 2.7) from last week. Its real test will come next week on October 15 when it moves to 8pm. Fringe held steady from last week’s 2.3 18-49 demo rating. Supernatural held steady with a 1.2 18-49 demo rating, it was up a tenth in adults 18-34 (1.3 rating vs. 1.2 last week), and flat with women 18-34 (1.5 rating).

At 10pm, the Private Practice premiere was was up 36% in the demo from last year’s season premiere (4.5 vs. 3.3 demo rating), and well ahead of CBS’ The Mentalist which scored a 3.7 rating which was up 12% from last week’s 3.4 demo rating. The Jay Leno Show slipped a tenth from last week to a 1.6 demo rating, tieing its lowest demo rating mark, set earlier.

My take: Looks like ABC is set to stay slightly ahead of CBS overall for the night going forward, with almost all of its margin at 9pm. I would expect the Private Practice / Mentalist numbers to tighten in coming weeks. NBC is crippled on the night, with the Office weakening, and the 8pm hour a dead zone. Fox is never going to win the night, but they couldn’t have expected to. They’re up nicely from last year, which had to be their only reasonable objective. The CW’s Vampire Diaries has settled into the only bright spot of the season for them and is staying strong.

Directly from NBC:

In Late-Night Local People Meters Thursday night:

* Conan O’Brien (1.0/5 in 18-49 in local people meters) trailed CBS’s LATE SHOW (1.2/6) in Nielsen’s 24 local markets with People Meters. Conan prevailed in adults 18-34 (0.7/4 vs. 0.6/3).
* At 12:35 a.m., Jimmy Fallon (0.5/3 in 18-49 in local people meters) trailed CBS’s LATE LATE SHOW (0.6/4). Jimmy prevailed in 18-34 (0.4/3 vs. 0.3/2).

Time Net Show 18-49 Rating 18-49 Share Viewers Live+SD (Millions)

ABC wins night with 'Grey's Anatomy'

By JON WEISMAN

A night-topping performance by "Grey's Anatomy" among adults 18-49 lifted ABC to a Thursday primetime victory, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen. CBS had the most viewers overall and was tops with ages 25-54.

The ballyhooed wedding of the Jim and Pam characters in an hourlong episode of NBC's "The Office" came in second for the night in the demo.

Thursday numbers figure to be affected (and further adjusted) by the ratings from TBS' broadcasts of major-league baseball playoff games, which included a Cardinals-Dodgers nailbiter ending after 9 p.m. ET and the Red Sox-Angels contest starting at roughly the same time. (Wednesday's Yankees-Twins game drew 6.61 million viewers.)

CBS' "Survivor" (3.4 rating, 10 share in 18-49, 11.7 million viewers overall) won the 8 p.m. hour Thursday in both 18-49 and viewers overall. ABC's FlashForward (3.0/9, 9.0 million) and Fox's Bones (2.8/8, 9.9 million) vied for silver medal honors.

NBC's "Community" (2.1/6, 5.0 million) made its debut in the 8 p.m. timeslot and improved slightly on the previous week's effort by "Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday," but suffered from no longer having a leadin from "The Office." "Community" shed 28% of its rating and 13% of its overall audience from its 9:30 p.m. airing last week.

"Parks and Recreation" (2.2/6, 5.0 million) built on its leadin for the fourth straight week and achieved a season high, while the CW's "The Vampire Diaries" (1.7/5, 3.5 million) held steady.

At 9 p.m., "Grey's Anatomy" (5.3/13, 13.8 million) not only won the hour for ABC, it nearly topped CBS' "CSI" (3.4/9, 14.6 million) in overall viewers. "The Office" (4.5/12, 9.1 million) had its top showing in overall viewers in nearly a year.

"Fringe" (2.1/5, 6.0 million) remained in its usual ratings neighborhood for Fox on Thursday, followed by the CW's "Supernatural" (1.1/3, 2.5 million).

ABC's "Private Practice" (3.7/10, 9.5 million), CBS' "The Mentalist" (3.2/9, 14.2 million) and NBC's "The Jay Leno Show (1.7/5, 4.8 million) rounded out the night at 10 p.m.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC 4.0/11, CBS 3.3/9, NBC 2.8/8, Fox 2.5/7, CW 1.4/4, Univision 1.2/3.

In total viewers: CBS 13.5 million, ABC 10.8 million, Fox 8.0 million, NBC 6.3 million, Univision 3.2 million, CW 3.0 million.

ABC’s Premiere Week Results Grow from First-Reported Numbers by 1.0 Million Viewers

Posted on 12 October 2009 by Bill Gorman

While this is a press release, I will have our usual DVR viewing post on the site ASAP.

via press release:

ABC’s Premiere Week Results Grow from First-Reported Numbers by 1.0 Million Viewers, by 12% in Adults 18-49 and by 15% in Adults 18-34

ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” is Once Again TV’ Biggest Gainer in the DVR Numbers, Jumping by 3.0 Million Viewers and 1.5 Adult 18-49 Rating Points in the Finals

ABC’s “FlashForward” is TV’s Top Freshman Gainer in Viewers and Adults 18-49

ABC Airs 9 Series Registering Increases of 1 Million Viewers or More in the Finals

2009-10 WEEK No. 1 Live + 7 Day Ratings:

Based on the first round of Live + 7 Day rating for the new television season, ABC saw its premiere week primetime averages jump from its originally reported Live + Same Day numbers by 1.0 million viewers (12.0 million vs. 11.0 million), by +12% in Adults 18-49 (3.7/10 vs. 3.3/9) and by +15% in Adults 18-34 (3.0/9 vs. 2.6/8). With Household DVR penetration rising sharply year to year (from 27% to 33%), ABC’s premiere week increases were bigger this year than last from the initially reported Live + Same Day numbers to the final Live + 7 Day averages. ABC remained the No. 1 network during premiere week (w/o 9/21/09) among Adults 18-49 in the Live + 7 Day averages.

* Similarly to last season, ABC series were among the most popularly recorded and played back. Like last season, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” was once again TV’s most-played-back show this season. On average, “Grey’s Anatomy” stood as the biggest actual gainer from the originally reported premiere week numbers (Live + Same Day) to the finalized DVR playback numbers (Live + 7 Day), generating an additional +3.0 million viewers (17.0 million to 20.0 million). In fact, “Grey’s” DVR increase was bigger this season than on opening week last year, when it gained +2.7 million viewers from Live + Same Day to the Live + 7 Day averages in originals. The sixth-season ABC medical drama was also the top gainer in Adult 18-49 rating, picking up 1.5 rating points in the finalized numbers – surging from a 6.7 rating to an 8.2 rating.

* A total of 9 of ABC’s scripted series gained 1.0 million viewers or more on average from their originally reported numbers to the final DVR playback numbers, including “Grey’s Anatomy” (+3.0 million – biggest gainer overall), “FlashForward” (+2.0 million – biggest new-series gainer), “Desperate Housewives” (+1.7 million), “Castle” (+1.5 million), “the forgotten” (+1.3 million), “Modern Family” (+1.1 million), “Eastwick” (+1.1 million), “Cougar Town” (+1.1 million) and “Brothers & Sisters” (+1.0 million).

* Among Adults 18-49, 7 of ABC’s scripted series registered substantial ratings increases of half-a-rating point or more: “Grey’s Anatomy” (+1.5 rating point – top gainer overall), “FlashForward” (+0.8 rating – top freshman gainer), “Desperate Housewives” (+0.7 rating), “Castle” (+0.6 rating), “Modern Family” (+0.6 rating), “Cougar Town” (+0.5 rating) and “Brothers & Sisters” (+0.5 rating).

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 33% currently, from 27% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

'Grey's Anatomy' secures victory for ABC
CBS' 'The Mentalist,' meanwhile, leads in viewers

According to preliminary nationals by Nielsen, "Grey's" (5.0 rating/13 share in 18-49, 13.6 million viewers overall) topped the 9 p.m. hour in the demo, but was bookended by less impressive performances from Alphabet colleagues "FlashForward" (2.6/7, 8.4 million) and "Private Practice" (3.5/10, 9.1 million).

Kicking off the night for CBS was usual 8 p.m. champ "Survivor" (3.7/10, 12.7 million), followed by older-audience faves "CSI" (3.4/9, 15.1 million) and "The Mentalist" (3.4/10, 15.4 million).

Fox, which likely would have had a Game 7 audience of 25 million or more had Philadelphia extended the World Series past Wednesday, settled for workmanlike performances from "Bones" (2.5/7, 8.5 million) at 8 p.m. and "Fringe" (1.7/4, 5.0 million) at 9 p.m. The CW offered "The Vampire Diaries" (2.0/5, 4.2 million), which won its hour among women 18-34, and "Supernatural" (1.2/3, 2.7 million).

NBC's 9 p.m. entry, "The Office" (3.9/10, 7.9 million), was the night's best performer across major male demos Thursday, though "30 Rock" (2.9/7, 5.9 million) shed more than a quarter of that lead-in. At 8 p.m. "Community" (2.3/6, 5.6 million) continues to inch higher and was No. 1 in its timeslot among adults 18-34. "Parks and Recreation" (2.2/6, 4.9 million) reached a season-high in 18-49.

"The Jay Leno Show" (1.6/5, 4.7 million) showed a slight uptick compared to the previous Thursday.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC 3.7/10, CBS 3.5/9, NBC 2.4/7, Univision 2.4/7, Fox 2.1/6, CW 1.6/4.

In total viewers: CBS 14.4 million, ABC 10.4 million, Fox 6.7 million, NBC 5.7 million, Univision 5.6 million, CW 3.5 million.

WEEK No. 8:
ABC finished No. 1 during the week of November 9, 2009 among Adults 18-49 (3.2/9), Adults 25-54 (3.9/10) and across each of the key Women demographics: W18-34 (3.3/10), W18-49 (4.0/11) and W25-54 (4.8/12).

Marking a season-high performance in Total Viewers (11.2 million), ABC generated its most-watched week in well over 1 year – going back to the year-ago September season-premiere week w/o 9/22/08. The Network hit a 7-week-high with Adults 18-49 – best since season-premiere week w/o 9/21/09.

ABC was up over the same week last year by 7% in Total Viewers and by 3% in Adults 18-49 (10.5 million and 3.1/8 on w/o 11/10/08).

Season to date excluding sports, ABC stands as the No. 1 TV network among Adults 18-49 (3.3/9), leading CBS by 6% (3.1/8), Fox by 10% (3.0/8) and NBC by 50% (2.2/6). ABC (3.2/9) is also pacing a strong No. 1 for the ’09 November Sweep (through 18 of 28 nights) in the non-sports Adult 18-49 averages, outdelivering No. 2 CBS by 14% (2.8/8), No. 3 Fox by 39% (2.3/6) and No. 4 NBC by 60% (2.0/5).

Rankings: ABC aired 3 of the week’s Top 4 non-sports television programs in Adults 18-49, including the week’s No. 1 scripted series for the 7th time in 8 weeks this season: “Grey’s Anatomy” – No. 1 scripted/non-sports show, “CMA Awards” – No. 2 non-sports show and “Desperate Housewives” – No. 4 non-sports show. The Network placed 5 of Top 15 most-watched television programs overall during the week: “Dancing with the Stars” – No. 3, “CMA Awards” – No. 5, “DWTS the Results” – No. 7, “Grey’s Anatomy” – No. 10 and “Desperate Housewives” – No. 11. ABC claimed the Top 3 TV shows for the week across all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54) with “Grey’s,” “Housewives” and the “CMA Awards.” ABC’s “V” qualified as TV’s No. 1 new drama for the week in Adults 18-49.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 33% currently, from 28% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

Monday
For the 4th time in the last 5 weeks, ABC stood as the night’s most-watched network (15.1 million), beating CBS by 3.0 million viewers (12.1 million), Fox by 4.7 million (10.4 million) and NBC by 10.2 million viewers (4.9 million). Further, ABC logged a season high in Total Viewers, drawing its largest audience on the night in 6 months – since 5/11/09.

“Dancing with the Stars” (8:00-10:02 p.m.)
Attracting its largest audience since its season premiere, ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” stood as Monday’s No. 1 telecast in viewers (17.6 million), ranking as TV’s most-watched series program on Monday for the 8th time in 8 weeks this season. The ABC dance competition built its audience from its first hour to its second hour in both Total Viewers (17.3 million to 17.9 million) and Adults 18-49 (3.3/9 to 3.6/9). In fact, in the 9 o’clock hour, “Dancing with the Stars” outperformed original dramas on Fox (+20% - 3.0/7 with “Lie to Me”) and NBC (+100% - 1.8/4 with “Trauma”).

“DWTS” won its 2-hour time period for the 7th consecutive week among Women 18-49 (4.9/12) and Women 25-54 (6.7/15).

“Castle” (10:02-11:00 p.m.)
For the 3rd week in a row, ABC’s “Castle” outperformed NBC’s “Jay Leno” in the 10 o’clock hour with its largest margin to-date in Total Viewers (+5.7 million viewers – 9.8 million vs. 4.1 million), while doubling its performance among Adults 18-49 (+100% - 2.4/6 vs. 1.2/3).

One of TV’s biggest gainers in the 10 o’clock hour this season, ABC’s “Castle” is generating substantial increases over its first-reported numbers through DVR playback, picking up an average 1.7 million viewers and an additional 6-tenths of an Adult 18-49 rating point (+26%) from the initially reported Live + Same Day Numbers to the Live + 7 Day DVR finals.

On average, “Castle” is improving the time period year to year for ABC, growing its hour over the same nights last year with “Boston Legal” in both Total Viewers (+1.6 million – 10.6 million vs. 9.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (+13% - 2.7/7 vs. 2.4/6).

“V” (8:00-9:01 p.m.)
ABC freshman “V” earned second place in the 8 o’clock hour to CBS’ top-performer “NCIS” in Total Viewers (10.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (3.8/10), beating NBC and Fox time-slot regulars by strong margins. From 8:00-9:00 p.m., ABC’s newcomer “V” outdelivered NBC’s “Biggest Loser” by 1.6 million viewers and by 12% in Adults 18-49 (9.1 million and 3.4/9) and “Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance” by 4.6 million viewers and by 65% in Adults 18-49 (6.1 million and 2.3/6).

The ABC drama stood as Tuesday No. 2 program in Adults 18-49, behind only CBS’ “NCIS.” In addition, “V” ranked No. 1 in the hour in Men 18-34 (3.1/10) and Men 18-49 (4.1/12-tied) and stood as Tuesday’s No. 1 TV show for the 2nd week in a row in both key Men demos.

In addition, the ABC dance competition dominated Fox’s dance program in the hour, beating the second hour of “So You Think You Can Dance” by a best-ever 10.8 million viewers (16.2 million vs. 5.4 million) and by 52% in Adults 18-49 (3.5/9 vs. 2.3/6).

Growing its young adult numbers for the 2nd straight week, “DWTS the Results” hit season-highs with Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.

“In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts” (10:01-11:00 p.m.)
An ABC News Special, “In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts,” took a strong second in the 10 o’clock hour to CBS’ “Good Wife,” beating NBC’s “Jay Leno” by 3.5 million viewers (9.3 million vs. 5.8 million) and by 21% in Adults 18-49 (2.3/6 vs. 1.9/5) - representing ABC’s widest-ever-advantage over “Leno” in the hour in viewers and young adults. “In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts: Bright Lights. Big Stars. All Access Nashville" took viewers into the private lives of country music's biggest stars. The special featured Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw and Martina McBride.

“In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts” generated ABC’s biggest audience and highest Adult 18-49 number in the hour in 7 weeks (since 9/22/09).

Wednesday
“The 43rd Annual CMA Awards” (8:00-11:00 p.m.)
With the Network’s broadcast of “The 43rd Annual CMA Awards,” ABC overshadowed Wednesday’s prime, beating out second-place CBS on the evening by 5.7 million viewers (17.2 million vs. 11.5 million) and by 66% in Adults 18-49 (5.3/14 vs. 3.2/8). ABC ranked No. 1 in all 6 half-hours of the night in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. In fact it was a clean sweep on the night, as the Network also took top honors on the evening across all key Adults, Men and Women demographics (18-34/18-49/25-54) and Teens 12-17, as well as registering as the top-rated broadcaster with Kids 2-11.

ABC attracted its biggest Wednesday audience with non-sports programming in well over 4 years and its highest Adult 18-49 number in 2 years – since 9/21/05 and 11/07/07, respectively.

Year to year, the “CMA Awards” gained 1.3 million viewers and grew 6% in Adults 18-49 (2008 = 15.9 million and 5.0/13 on 11/12/08). It was the most-watched “CMA Awards” telecast in 4 years, while the annual awards show marked its highest Adult 18-34 number in 5 years (4.2/12) and top Women 18-34 number in 6 years (5.8/16) – since 2005, 2004 and 2003, respectively.

Like its lead-in, “Brothers & Sisters” is seeing a sizeable uptick this season over its first-reported numbers through DVR playback (also bigger than last season), picking up an average 1.3 million viewers and an additional 5-tenths of an Adult 18-49 rating point from the initially reported Live + Same Day Numbers to the Live + 7 Day DVR finals.
