Let's take this show by show. "The Big Bang Theory" — Kaley Cuoco goes for lead. "Big Love" — Among the female stars, only Jeanne Tripplehorn has been submitted for lead. "Damages" — There was speculation that Rose Byrne might move up to lead from supporting, but she remains in the second tier. (And who can blame her. Would YOU take on Glenn Close, who won last year for her fire-spitting portrayal of a dragon corporate attorney?) Also in supporting: John Doman, Tate Donovan, Anastasia Griffith, Marcia Gay Harden, William Hurt and Timothy Olyphant. Ted Danson drops from supporting to guest star. "ER" — Angela Bassett goes for lead. "Friday Night Lights" — Connie Britton stays down in supporting after initially competing in the lead slot in the show's first year. "Gossip Girl" — All in the lead races: Chance Crawford, Ed Westwick, Leighton Meester. "Grey's Anatomy" — Only Ellen Pompeo remains in lead. Patrick Dempsey has dropped down to supporting. "Mad Men" — January Jones moves up to lead, alongside Elisabeth Moss and Jon Hamm. Only Christina Hendricks, Vincent Kartheiser and John Slattery are in supporting. All else in guest, including Patricia Fischer, Colin Hanks, Melina McGraw, Robert Morse, Mark Moses and Joel Murray. "Scrubs" — After all of these years, Judy Reyes competes for lead comedy actress "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" — Competes in comedy categories, not drama. Mistakes are painful, but you have to make these by your own to learn. And you are my favorite, the most common and the most painful one, sorry for everything...

Hahahahahaha. That makes me laugh. Maybe according the people who pick who goes where Patrick's part wasn't as "leading male" as they would have liked it to be. And this isn't because i'm not a Derek person, but if it didn't have to do with his meltdown, this is the first season that Shonda didn't have Derek shoved down our throats all season. So maybe that's why he's not up for lead. IMO there really was no male lead this season because all of the guys on the show were "spotlighted" at different times throughout the season. And WTF is with the cast of Gossip Girl being nominated. Yeah I love me some Ed Westwick and some guilty pleasure TV, but no way in hell should they be getting noms. I am not really happy with this article... as you all can tell. I think Der played an awesome season... and he is definitely a leading actor? Supporting role to who? I tell you at least Ellen was not ditched for Katherine... I know we have a lot of Izzie lovers... and I am one of them but the shows main actors are the lead actors... and this just does not make any sense? Justin came in awesome but he was not full force all season... George was gone for awhile... Pickens Jr was also MIA for awhile... I guess they felt the show had no leading men????? Or you think the Ghost too over the show? |

I think something it truly not right here... cuz PD has done some wonderful acting this season. His dark side... his meltdown... his coming to terms... and soo much more... but oh well we shall see what the heck is going on... cuz this is freaking WHACKED... PD not Approved here... |

They don't look at just episodes. They look at the whole entire season. Derek didn't play a huge part this season. They are basing Patrick's performance off the whole entire season not just episodes that he was a major character in. Just because he's Patrick Dempsey doesn't mean hes going to get the leading male nom. That's not how it works. |

JC should've submitted on the lead category since he got a big storyline this season that lasted the whole season. PD did right thing by submitting in the supporting category since his storyline was a supporting character storyline not a lead storyline this season. IMO. EP should've submitted on supporting category too since Mer storyline was supporting Izzie's. Mer storyline was practically non-existent except for the SK arc. |

Wow...they hole entire cast is listed. That hasn't happened since like season 2. I agree with everything you said Iben. Although Katherine did have a major storyline she was right by going for supporting. I think if she would have gone in for leading people would have taken it the wrong way since she pulled her name last season. I'm glad to see i'm not the only who agrees with what Patrick did. |

Geez... I guess PD felt he did not get the material to give him a nomination in the leading role... I disagree... but we shall see what happens... I think this year Grey's was AWESOME!!! They all did very well. |

Although this news comes as a surprise, it doesn't mean it's time to start spinning conspiracy theories about this meaning Dempsey's role on the show is being reduced, or how Shonda Rhimes doesn't value him as an actor. This is nothing more than a strategic move to increase his chances at the Emmys. Many actors and actresses in ensemble shows like 'Grey's' alternate between the lead and supporting categories on a yearly basis, depending on where they feel they'd have a competitive edge. If Depmsey had entered the lead actor category this year, he would've faced stiff competition from the likes of 'House's Hugh Laurie, '24's Keifer Sutherland and 'Mad Men's Jon Hamm. However, in the supporting category, he is likely to face off against a slew of actors from shows with large casts. If Emmy voters are torn between say, two different actors from 'Lost', it could split the votes and allow more room for Dempsey to slip in. The bad news, however, is that this change means Dempsey will now be competing against his co-stars T.R. Knight, Justin Chambers, Eric Dane, James T. Pickens and Kevin McKidd. While Dane and Pickens have never received the type of critical buzz for their performances that leads to Emmy nominations, Knight, Chambers and McKidd could prove to be tough competitors. Although Knight received significantly less screen time this season, he'd be a repeat nominee (which always helps), and could prove to be a sentimental favorite following the tragic end to his story arc for the season. Chambers has never been nominated before, but stood out this season in his scenes with Katherine Heigl (a likely nominee in the supporting actress category). And the powerful performance by newcomer McKidd was called out by many critics as a crucial factor in the show's creative rebound this season. On the women's side, Ellen Pompeo will remain in the lead actress category, while Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, Chandra Wilson, Sara Ramirez and Chyler Leigh will continue to compete in the supporting category. The women of 'Grey's' have historically fared better at the Emmys than their male co-stars. Oh and Wilson both received multiple nominations for the show, and Heigl became the first regular cast member to win an Emmy for the show in 2007. Dempsey has been nominated for two Golden Globes for his work on Grey's Anatomy, but has yet to receive his first nomination for the more prestigious Emmys. i kinda always felt that he was a supporting actor while ellen was the only lead... but he could of done this to increase his chances to get nominated and win an emmy. He would be against tougher competition in the leading actor category.. |
