OH, THE GUILT Episode 305 Air date 10/19/06 Bailey helps a nursing mother, Diana, fight breast cancer. Diana's really young. Does she really have breast cancer? Though RARE, breast cancer does affect pre-menopausal women. It afflicts women of all ages. It's harder to diagnose in younger women -- because the breast tissue is more dense and fibrous -- making mammograms a less effective diagnostic tool -- but also because doctors aren't looking for breast cancer in younger women. What does nursing a baby have to do with breast cancer? Why can breast feeding make it harder to diagnose? While women breast feed it is common for their milk ducts to become blocked, forming a tangible lump that feels the same as a lump from breast cancer. So, if a nursing woman feels a lump, it is easy to mistake it for a blocked milk duct. If you massage the milk duct lump it will often dissolve within a week. Lumps from cancer will not dissolve. So, if the lumps are stubborn and don't go away, it's important to have a doctor look at them. Does nursing my baby make me more likely to get breast cancer? No. In fact, having a baby and nursing are two things that decrease your chances for breast cancer. Bailey's speech to Diana is very passionate. Is she becoming too attached to her patient? Bailey is a good doctor. She understands that the most important factor in the treatment and management of cancer is the willingness of the patient to fight it. If Diana can find a fierce determination to live and beat the cancer, then her chances of doing that are much increased.
