okay i'll post it from the beginning...but I will try and post all of it now and not wait for comments so we can get to where we left off!!! Right when it gets good. =). .... 5 simple reasons: Meredith and Derek have been working on their relationship, and they are slowly yet surely growing closer together, though they have a very long way to go. After Addison's visit to SGH, it got Meredith to thinking about how much she needed Derek in her life. So ever since then they have been trying to work things out. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Meredith rolled over and fumbled in the dark, reaching for the clock to see what time it was. 5:30am "chit!" Meredith yelled, throwing back the covers and fumbling to find her clothes. Derek groaned and turned over opening his eyes. "uhh. what is it?" He mumbled, still half asleep. "chit." meredith exclaimed again, unable to find her pants. Meredith finally found them and quickly pulled them on while yelling with Derek. "Derek I was supposed to be at the hospital half an hour ago. chit. They're gonna kill me. Derek i thought you said you set your alarm. Derek sat up in bed, trying not to laugh at the sight of Meredith running around his trailer picking up her stuff they had strewn aside last night in their haste to get into the bedroom. Derek got up and put on his boxers. He walked over to Meredith who was half out the door and grabbed her arm. "i'll see you tonight?" he questioned. distracted and stressed Meredith quickly nodded. "yeah. sure. see you at the hospital. lunch?" Derek nodded and gave her a quick kiss as she rushed into her car. Derek went back into the trailer. He didn't have to be at the hospital for another hour in a half, but it was useless to go back to sleep now that Meredith was gone. He quickly got into the shower and let the hot water sting his body. He was glad that he was back with Meredith. And they were both trying, but it was hard. They had a lot of bad habits to break. Meredith was still holding back and Derek was still casually flirting with Rose. But when they couldn't talk, after a long day when they were both stressed. They resorted to what they were best at. sex. lots and lots of it. Derek got out of the shower and quickly got dressed. He picked up the trailer a little bit after their adventure from last night. He made the bed, and picked up the lamp that had been knocked over. Smiling he found Meredith's panties on his floor, she must not have found them this morning and decided to go without them. He put them in his pocket, knowing it would lead to a fun day for him. He ate some breakfast and then got in the car, driving to the hospital. Once he arrived he looked around for Meredith, unable to find her he went to check the board. He had a surgery in about an hour so he went to prep the patient. He walked in the patients room to find rose in there with him. He smiled at her and began taking the patients vitals. "do you have any questions about your surgery Mr. Johnson?" Derek asked. The elderly man smiled at Derek. "No Dr., not about the surgery. But this young lady here looks like she wants to talk with you." Mr. Johnson said referring to Rose. Rose blushed and looked away and Derek just smiled his McDreamy smile. "Alright Mr. Johnson. We'll see you in about an hour." With that Derek walked out of the room, Rose right behind him. "Derek-" Rose began, questions in her voice. Derek smiled at her, slightly shaking his head. "Rose. I'm sorry I need to get back to work. Is it important?" Rose shook her head, but then changed her mind. "okay. do you want to meet for lunch?" Derek hesitated. But only a second before anwsering. "sorry,I'm meeting Meredith. Bye." Derek left, heading back to his office, leaving a rejected Rose standing in the hall. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Meredith sighed, pushing the hair out of her eyes as she answered yet another stupid question asked by one of her interns. She had been having a rough morning. Plus she wasn't feeling great due to the lack of sleep she got last night. She finally sent all of her interns off and had a spare moment to herself. She sat down, exhausted, and flipped through some charts. Derek appeared behind her with a cup of coffee for her. "mm. thanks." she said sipping the warm liquid. "how has your morning been?" Derek asked, but was quickly silenced by Meredith's glare. "oh yeah. sorry. i forgot your stuck doing charts." His pager went off and he sighed, knowing he had to go. "okay. well...see you at lunch?" Meredith nodded as she kissed his cheek before watching him disappear down the hall of the hospital. Meredith got through the day, though it was longer than most. Her and Derek enjoyed lunch together, though they got interrupted several times by pagers and interns. When Meredith was finally done with her shift she met Derek in the lobby and then went back to his trailer. "so. how was your day?" Meredith asked him, already knowing the answer by the look on his face. "i lost him. I lost him Mer. Everything was going so well and....and then he was just gone. I lost him." Meredith hugged Derek tight. "it's not your fault. It happens to everyone." "yeah. that's what Rose said, but. it's hard." Meredith's heart stung when she heard Rose's name metnioned, but pushed the thought out of her head. Instead they crawled into bed and after a repeat of the night before, they fell asleep soundly in each others arms. - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The next several weeks dragged by for Meredith. She was spending most of her nights at the trailer, though sometimes she went back to her house alone. Derek and her weren't as close as they used to be and that was taking a toll on her. The past few days she has been feeling really crappy. She blamed it on the lack of sleep and the stress of trying to patch things up with Derek. But after another week of feeling gross and not looking all that great, Izzie insisted that she go to the doctor. "Izzie, I am the doctor. And trust me, I'll be fine. It's just stress and stuff." But when Meredith woke up the next morning puking, she couldn't help but wonder if Izzie might be right. Sitting alone on her bathroom floor, head in the toilet, she got a horrible feeling in her stomach. It was the worst, coldest, most suffocating feeling she had ever felt. "no. its impossible." Meredith cried to herself, but she already knew that her worst fear could in fact be true. Shaking, she stood up, pushing her hair back she wiped off her face and looked into the mirror, trying desperately to recall her last period. When she realized she couldn't remember it, it just made her puke again. She cleaned herself up and quickly called Izzie, telling her that she was staying home sick and to spread the news. Then, she got into her car and drove to the pharmacy, ignoring the calls she got from Derek wondering if she was okay. Shaking, she picked up the closest pregnancy test and walked to the check out. Then returning to the car she sped home trying not to let the tears blur her vision. "this can't be happening to me." she muttered. She tried not to think about it until she knew for sure, but it seemed as though everything in her life was just starting to return to normal. She got home and quickly ran up to the bathroom. She tore open the box and quickly followed the directions on the back. As she was waiting for the timer to go off, she pushed back the tears. She thought about how much her life would change. She couldn't be pregnant. Her and Derek were just beginning to repair their very damaged relationship and all a baby would do would complicate matters. Plus, with her career just starting, a baby would ruin it. the timer beeped and she took a deep breath before looking down. _________________ |

Meredith saw her future flash before her eyes as she stared down at the positive pregnancy test. "NO!" she cried, collapsing on the cold bathroom floor. She quickly emptied the contents of her stomach once again. How could this be? she thought, although she already knew the answer. Her and Derek should have been more careful. damn it why didn't they use condoms. why wasn't she taking the pill. These thoughts flooded her mind, but she knew it was useless to try and change it. what happened, happened. And now she was here. In a new and very delicate relationship with Derek and pregnant. "This could not have come at a worse time." Meredith thought to her self. After she cried all her tears, she sat up trying to think of what happens next. she wished she could call someone or had someone she could talk to but she knew it was useless. Izzie would be thrilled, Christina would just say "i told you so" and Derek....Derek. She couldn't even bring herself to think about Derek's reaction. Meredith decided she wouldn't say anything to anyone until she got the results confirmed. But she knew she couldn't go to the hospital word gets around and she didn't want anyone to know. She knew that today would be her best option because she wouldn't have an excuse not to work tomorrow. She sighed and then picked up the nearest phone book, flipping through the pages until she found the address she needed. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ------------------ Meredith sat in the thin gown at the local clinic. The nurse had just come in and confirmed her worst fears. She was pregnant. The nurse was talking about her options or something. abortion, adoption, etc. But Meredith had already tuned her out. All she could think about was that word. Pregnant. Her life was just starting to get back on track. She had the guy, she had the job, she had the friends. and well. and now she had the baby. Nurse: Miss? Mer: oh. sorry what? Nurse: I was just saying, our initial blood work didn't tell us much other than you are definetley pregnant. But if you would like we can do some more thorough tests and try to get a better idea of how far along you are. Meredith numbly nodded as the nurse went around and began poking at her. Then Meredith was once again left alone while the nurse went to process her results. Meredith thought about abortion. "it could work you know." she whispered to herself. no one would ever no. not derek or izzie. life could stay the same. nice and simple. uncomplicated. but she would know. Meredith couldn't talk herself into an abortion. Though she considered it she finally decided against it. The nurse returned a few moments later with a load of stuff in her arms. Nurse: well. I'm rather surprised you're just now coming in. it appears you are already 2-3 Months pregnant. Now, here's some vitamins, and some pamphlets, ...... The nurse continued giving Meredith this information, acting like it was the most exciting thing in the world. All Meredith wanted to do was forget about it all. forget about everything. The nurse finally left Meredith alone so she could change after giving her a complete list of instructions and then sent her on her way. Meredith thanked her, picked up the plastic bag that contained the information and walked back to her car. slowly. She sat in her car and cried once more. She cried for her loss of freedom. she cried for her ruined life. she cried for her hopeless relationship, she cried for her ruined career but most importantly, she cried for her baby. Finally she sat up, wiping the tears away she vowed that she would pull it together and stop crying. The tears weren't helping anything. in fact they were just making things worse. Meredith drove home, listening to the numerous voice mails Derek left her, wondering if she was okay. Meredith got back to her house and began thinking immediately about her future. What would she do with a baby while she was at work? Where would they live...she hated to kick Izzie and George out of the house to make room for a baby. What would happen to her and Derek? Meredith was still trying to figure things out when she heard the front door open and the sound of Derek's voice. "MER?" he yelled as he came up the stairs. "honey? are you okay?" he opened her bedroom door, finding her spraled on her bed, puffy eyes and a far-away look in her eyes. "meredith" he said gently, calmer now that he knew she was okay. "hi." meredith said softly. barely audible. "honey...what is it?" derek asked, stroking her hair trying to comfort her. "derek. I ...we...(sigh) never mind. i'm okay." Derek knew she was still holding something back, but didn't want to push her. "okay. well promise me you'll tell me when you're ready?" Meredith nodded "okay. well. i'm going to go start something for dinner. do you want anything special?" Meredith shook her head and Derek stood up, giving her a kiss before walking downstairs. On his way out his eye caught the corner of a plastic bag that had been shoved in her closet, only the top sticking out. But Derek saw the words: gnancy clinic sticking out and his blood turned to ice. Silent, he left her room, shutting the door behind him as he slowly walked down the stairs. wondering about what he had just seen. chit. derek thought to himself as he opened the fridge and began pulling out stuff for dinner. its impossible. he tried to convince himself, but he knew it was actually very very possible for her to be pregnant. we're not ready for a baby, we've only been dating for a couple of weeks. a million thoughts were racing through derek's head as he began making dinner. how would they handle a baby? they couldn't. what about their jobs? what about their relationship? Derek opened up a beer from the fridge and began sipping on it, lost in his thoughts he didn't realize Izzie was talking to him until she shook him. Izzie: Derek!? you there? Der: yeah, sorry. i'm just uhm. distracted. what's up? Izzie: i was just asking how mer was feeling? Der: oh. um. i think she's doing better. would you mind keeping an eye on the food, i'm going to check on her. Izzie agreed as Derek went back up the stairs, deciding what to day. He opened the door and caught sight of Meredith, now sitting up, eyes a little less puffy and a smile on her face. "i was just coming down." she said smiling. "oh. well. lets stay up here. do you want to talk?"Derek asked, hoping she would open up. Derek watched her face, which revealed the internal struggle she was having with herself. She took a deep breath, slightly shaking when she answered Derek. "a..actually. we really need to talk." They sat down on the bed and meredith shakily began, avoiding his eyes, suddenly becoming interested in her comforter. "i. um. i . im really sorry but. but. iampregnant." she said very quickly, eyes down. "what?" derek asked, feeling the pit in his stomach grow. "i. i'm pregnant derek. god!" Meredith said, blinking back the tears. "how could we let this happen? were so f*c*ing stupid. i'm not ready for a baby derek. we're not ready for one. i. i don't know what to do. i dont want to kill it derek. i . i just cant believe this is my life and this is happening to me. what are we going to do?" Derek hugged Meredith, stroking her head softly. Both of them were silent, not saying anything, but their silence spoke wonders. Meredith was very proud of herself for holding herself together. She wasn't crying, she wasn't even shook up, still she was glad that Derek was trying to comfort her. "what are we going to do?" derek finally spoke up, knowing that as much as they wished this would all just disapear, it truly wouldn't. "i. I don't know. I understand if you want to get out, and It was both of our mistakes, but mostly mine, I should have been more careful, so If you want out, that's okay." Meredith said, her voice slightly wavering. Derek couldn't believe that she thought he wouldn't want to be a part of their babies life. "oh Mer." he began softly. "Mer, all my life I've wanted a family. I've always wanted to be a daddy. and I hoped that some day we would have our own family. It's a lot sooner than i thought, but Mer, i'm not going anywhere. Like you said, we made a mistake. but lets not make any more. we can get through this. we will. we have to. for the baby's sake." Meredith blinked back the tears, forcing herself to be strong. "okay." she said softly. "we'll try." she said to him. Derek hugged Meredith, trying to be strong for her sake, but all he wanted was a drink. he wasn't ready to be a dad. no matter what he said to comfort Meredith. not yet, it was too soon. where would they live? would Mer still work? how would they support the baby? what would happen to their relationship? would they get married? all these things raced through Derek's head as he hugged Meredith tight. They heard Izzie saying dinner was ready, but told her they weren't hungry anymore. "lets get some sleep." Derek said a little while later, hoping that a good nights sleep would clear their minds. "okay." meredith said, still slightly shocked by derek's reaction to the surprise pregnancy. Meredith got up and changed into sweats and gave Derek his sweats that were in her drawer. Derek pulled the covers back and turned off the light as they crawled into Mer's bed. Derek set the alarm and laid down, wrapping his arms around Meredith while thinking about the new turn his life was taking. It was a week since Meredith found out that she was pregnant. She hadn't told anyone besides Izzie & Christina (and Derek of course!) Her and Derek had somehow gotten through the past week. Meredith went to work that next day, telling everyone she just had a flu bug or something. Derek had been trying, but it was tough for both of them. He spent the night with Meredith most of the time, though some days he just needed to be alone, or she did. They hadn't slept together since finding out about the baby, and their relationship seemed to be more forced than it usually was, but Meredith just blamed it on the stress. She had been waking up every morning puking in the toilet, with either Derek holding her hair back, or Izzie. Meredith woke up runni ng to the toilet as she had for the past week. Derek heard her get up and quickly got out of the bed and came to hold her hair and rub her back. After emptying the contents of her stomach, she was able to get up. "how are you feeling today?" Derek asked softly, his blue eyes showing pain as he thought of what she was experiencing. "yeah. i'm okay. its just like it has been. " Meredith said, wiping her mouth as she stood up. "so. are we going to tell everyone today?" Derek asked. Meredith nodded, nervous just thinking of everyone's reactions, but she knew she had to. She already felt different, even though she was barely pregnant, she had been having horrible morning sickness and even started gaining weight. Meredith knew it wouldn't be long before everyone would be able to tell she was expecting. They wanted to tell the chief, and everyone at the hospital before it became obvious. "yeah. we have to get the word out soon." Meredith sighed, rubbing her stomach trying to get the nausea to pass. She got into the shower as Derek went downstairs to get something to eat as they got ready to go to work. |

WARNING......THIS SCENE RATED M. READ WITH CAUTION.... Meredith's back was pushed up against the wall as Derek's tongue attacked hers. Their clothes were strewn across the tiny on-call room as they desperately grabbed at each other in the dark room. Meredith let a moan escape her lips as Derek unclasped her bra, allowing her breasts to be free as they rested on her chest. her hair cascading down her neck, Derek knew he couldn't control himself much longer. He sucked on her breasts, enjoying the feel of her nipples turning hard. Meredith was running her hands through his hair, kissing his neck, sending shivers down his spine. Meredith tugged off Derek's boxers, exposing his ready and waiting member. Meredith grabbed it, as they both let out a moan, and began stroking it. "oh. f*ck mer." derek moaned, his hands pulling off her panties. Meredith moaned as Derek placed his hand between her legs, feeling her drip onto him. "oh god. you're so wet. oh f*ck mer. " Derek pushed Meredith up against the back of the wall, grinding his hips into hers. "derek hurry. please." meredith gasped between breaths. Derek quickly thrust himself into Meredith's hot and waiting core. They both let out moans of pleasure as they began their ride. Derek was even more turned on as he watched Meredith's breasts bounce up and down as he thrust into her. Meredith pressed her chest against Derek's, her bare skin against his. Derek sucked gently on her neck, as she began to take control, grinding into him quicker and quicker. "ohhhh Derek!" Meredith yelled as he thurst himself even deeper into her hot core, causing her to shake as her orgasm began to hit. "wait for me baby." Derek moaned, close to his breaking point. He thrust a couple more times, his arm on the wall, propping himself up as he began to shake. They cried out together, their bodies soaked with sweat as there naked bodies were joined into one. "oh. god. derek. that was amazing." Meredith said as they finished, their juices mixing together and running down Meredith's leg. Derek led Meredith over to the bed as they collapsed onto each other. Derek slowly pulled out of Meredith as they both laid there trying to catch their breath. Meredith's legs were soaked with both of their juices that had combined during their passionate love-making. Derek positioned himself so he was able to kiss Meredith's thighs, spreading their juices all over her body. His kisses continued up until he reached her breasts where his eyes turned dark once again. "god derek. we just finished, give me a second." meredith said laughing as derek began to kiss her again. "okay okay we can wait. i like it better that way anyway." he said, rolling over so he could rest next to Meredith. He wrapped his arm around her warm naked body and smiled when he felt her breast rest on his forearm. Pulling her closer to him he took in the scent of lavender that was in her hair before closing his eyes to rest. Meredith shook her head trying to erase the memory. No matter how pleasurable it might have been at the time, it caused her pregnancy. She had been having a lot of flashbacks lately, to all of the times when her and Derek had had sex. Meredith hadn't realized how often they slept together until she started to think about it. She didn't regret sleeping with Derek, she only wished they had been more careful. "are you okay?" derek asked. they were at the hospital sitting in Derek's car, getting ready to go talk to the chief. "yeah. lets go get this over with." Meredith said stepping out of the car. They walked into the chief's office and sat down. Meredith began playing with her hands, nervously as she waited for the chief to get off the phone. Derek put his arm around the back of mer's chair, showing his support. The chief hung up his phone call and turned to the two of them Chief: what brings you two in here so early? More drama I assume? (laughing slightly) Mer: um. Chief I have something to tell you. Der: we. we have something to tell you. Chief: is everything all right? Meredith takes a deep breath before spilling her secret she had kept for the past week in a half. Mer: I'm pregnant. The Chief pales as he stares at them in disbelief. He knew that they were sleeping together but they had just gotten back together as a couple and were no where near ready for a child. Chief: wow. i-um. congratulations. i take it this was unexpected? Der: very. we. we should have been more careful, but we made a mistake and we're not going to make another. we're keeping the baby. Chief: wow. um. i'm speechless. I. I didn't expect this at all. How far along are you? Mer: a little over 2 months. Chief: are you..um. how do you plan on raising this child? I mean, are you living together? The Chief knew he was invading their privacy, but he also felt as if Meredith was his daughter. He watched her grow up and it killed him to see her hurt and make mistakes. He needed to know how she planned on handling this. Der: we have talked about it. a little. We are not going to get married. I-We don't want to rush into anything we're not ready for. But we will be strong for our baby's sake. We're still working things out, I believe that we both love each other we just need to get past some things and that will take time. The Chief nodded. Chief: I see. well thank you for telling me, I'm sure that took some courage. Word will get around very quickly i'm afraid and people will say some nasty things but you guys can get through it. Just stay strong. Let me know if you would like some time off, for doctors appointments or anything. I'm sure we can work things out. Mer: thank you Chief. I...I'm so sorry I disappointed you. Chief: oh Meredith, you haven't disappointed me. I admire both of you for taking responsibility for your actions and I think you will make wonderful parents. Der: thank you Chief. They left the chiefs office feeling somewhat pleased. It was hard to tell him. Saying it out loud made it seem even more real. Meredith knew that by that afternoon everyone in the hospital would know. Part of that terrified her, the other part relieved her. At least she wouldn't have to pretend anymore. Mer: "I gotta go, my interns will be here soon. Meet me for lunch?" Der: "yeah. stay strong Mer, we will get through this. Meredith kissed Derek softly before heading towards the changing room. She quickly changed into her scrubs and then sat down on the bench. She pulled up her shirt slightly and looked at her stomach. was it just her or was it bigger already? Meredith was sure she was just paranoid, but she had been reading some books lately and they said that most people started showing around the third month or so. Meredith placed her hand on her stomach. Over the past week she had come to accept that she was pregnant, and believe it or not she was okay with it. She heard other people come in and snapped back to reality. She quickly stood up and crabbed her clipboard before shouting off orders to her interns. It would be a long day. But she would get through it. She always does. (LATER) It was lunch time and Meredith's day had been going pretty crappy. She had to do an emergency surgery on one of her patients and she lost him. It was hard on her like it always was, but this time it really hit home. The man was a new father. His wife had just had her baby two days ago. A little baby girl. Jaide Alexandra. And now that baby girl would have to grow up without a daddy. Meredith stopped in the bathroom, wiping away the tears that were forming. It must be the hormones she figured, looking at herself in the mirror. She knew she had to hurry to meet Derek in time for lunch so she quickly walked down the hall. She got to the cafeteria and she could already tell her worst fears were coming true. "oh my gosh, did you hear...Meredith Grey is pregnant. yeah. everyone's saying that it is Derek Shepard's baby. God, she's such a w***e, she cant make him love her so she f*cks him until shes pregnant with his baby." "yeah, what a slut." "I heard it wasn't even Derek's baby. She was screwing some other guy while supposedly dating him. " "wow. do you think they're going to stay together? I mean, a baby is a huge thing, do you think she's going to make him marry her?" Meredith knew that the gossip would be hurtful, but she had no idea it would really hurt this bad. She was having a hard enough time as it was, finding out she was pregnant wasn't exactly the best thing to happen to her, and just starting to repair her very fragile relationship with Derek. She had it hard enough. She didn't need this. But then she heard someone who turned her blood to ice. She stood by the door of the cafeteria listening to Rose's conversation. rose: "Derek? how could you do this to me? How could you? We slept together Derek. You and I. physically had sex. together. You told me you wanted fun, I gave you fun. You told me you weren't ready to get serious. I told you I would wait, but now you go off and screw that slutty Meredith and get her pregnant and suddenly you have eyes only for her. What happened to our lunch dates? Our eye sex we would have in the operating room? Does that mean nothing now that she's pregnant. Are you just going to give everything up that we have to be with that slut and raise her kid. Do you even know if it's yours?" derek: Rose. Rose. Listen to me. I'm so sorry that I hurt you. Honestly I am, but I told you getting into this relationship that I wasn't looking for anything serious. And yes, I am going to give up what we might have had for Meredith and yes I know it's our child. One day Rose, you will find that special guy that means everything to you and you mean everything to him. But it's not me. And we had a lot of fun, I'll give you that. But now we need to cool it. It's over. I need some time, wait a few months and we'll see where things are. But right now, I'm trying to make things work for Meredith and I would appreciate it if you wouldn't go around spreading rumors. If not for meredith's sake, than for mine. Meredith's heart melted when she heard Derek standing up for her. Meredith walked over to where Rose and Derek were standing and smiled slightly at Rose. Mer: hi Rose. Rose: oh. Hi Meredith. um. congratulations. Mer: thank you. now if you don't mind, Derek and I have an appointment. Meredith lead Derek away from Rose and away from the stares they were getting back into the hallway. "where are we going? I thought we were having lunch?" Derek asked, obviously stressed out and upset over the conversation with Rose. Meredith smiled at Derek, leaning up she whispered in his ear. "I'm hungry for dessert. On-call room?" _________________ Meredith and Derek lay in the small on-call room bed, their naked bodies entwined. They lay there for a while, just holding each other. It was the first time they had slept together since finding out Meredith was pregnant. It seemed like a big step for them, they were finally accepting the fact that they would be parents and had moved on. "that was fun." meredith said softly. "yeah. it was. I'm sorry Mer." derek said "for what?" "for what Rose said. Don't listen to any of it Mer, we can get through it, just like the chief said." Meredith rolled over and kissed Derek. "I know." Derek pulled her warm body close as they drifted to sleep. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - It was the next week. Meredith and Derek had somehow gotten through all the drama, gossip and rumors surrounding Meredith's un-planned pregnancy. There relationship had also gotten to be stronger. They had started going out on dates again and talking more. It wasn't perfect, but it was a start. Today they were going to Meredith's first official doctor's appointment. They had finally accepted the fact that they were going to have a baby and had used all that energy to get ready for it. Derek had bought several books and Meredith had caught him reading them when he thought she wasn't paying attention. Meredith thought it was sweet that Derek was stepping up and really trying to be a part of her life. They get to the doctor's office and they both are a little nervous. Now that they know there is a baby, they don't want anything to happen to it. They finally hear their named called and stand up to walk into the room. Derek: well. it's now or never! They were lead into the small room and the nurse gave Meredith a gown to change into before leaving and shutting the door. Meredith quickly changed and they sat on the examining table. Derek squeezed her hand to offer his support. The door opened a few moments later and a blonde doctor that looked a little like Izzie entered. "hello! I'm Dr. Jennie Johnson. I'll be taking care of you during your pregnancy. Now you must be Meredith!" mer: hi, yes I'm Meredith and this is my um. this is Derek. Dr. Johnson: hello. well, shall we get started. first of all do you have any questions? mer: um. well I've been having really bad morning sickness and I just feel fat. I've been gaining all this weight it seems and i mean, is this normal? Dr. Johnson: well, you're about 3 months pregnant, so the morning sickness should have passed, but everyone is different. We can do an ultrasound to see if everything is fine, but I wouldn't worry. Dr. Johnson got out the equipment and began putting the cold gel on meredith's stomach, she flinched and Derek stroked her hair trying to help. As she moved the machine around, trying to get an image she warned Meredith. "usually it's hard to get a clear image this early in the pregnancy, but we can still try. What we usually are able to see is a sma- oh my gosh" Dr. Johnson stared at the screen for several moments, peering intensely at the small picture. der: is everything okay? mer: yeah, i mean is the baby okay. dr. johnson: I um. I'm going to have to get another opinion, but um. I think you may be expecting quadruplets! |

"chit" Derek said, looking at the doctor wondering if you heard her correctly. mer: what? dr. Johnson: like I said, we should have someone confirm it, but I believe you are pregnant with quadruplets. congratulations. if you look right here you can see the first babies head, then over here is the next baby and behind that one is baby C and then below almost off the screen is a leg from baby D. Meredith and Derek stared at the screen. Sure enough they could see 4 small outlines that were their babies. "how did this happen? I mean the chances of conceiving quadruplets naturally is slim to none. how. god, why me. why us?" Meredith cried out. Dr. Johnson printed off a copy of the ultrasound picture and then quietly left the room to give Meredith and Derek some time alone. "I'll give you a few minutes" she said quietly before shutting the door behind her. Meredith sobbed in Derek's arms. Her whole body shaking. How could this happen to her, they weren't ready for one baby but they would make it work, but four. four. there was no way. Derek bit back every swear word and curse he could think of, and then some. He murmured comforting words to Meredith, stroking her hair, telling her everything would be okay. But he didn't believe it. not for one moment. "meredith, meredith, listen to me." he said, waiting for her to calm down. "we can do this. okay, lets just pull it together enough for the doctor to come back and finish here, then at home we can breakdown. Just, just try for me okay, lets just hold it together for a little bit longer. " Meredith nodded, wiping at her tears before motioning for Derek to let the doctor back in. _________________ Dr. Johnson: I know this is very shocking for both of you, so I'm going to try and make it as simple as I can, We'll keep today brief, but I would like to make another appointment for later this week, once you've had some time to think things through and its not so shocking, then we can give you more details. Is that okay? Der: yeah, that's fine. thank you. Dr. Johnson: okay, well as you can imagine, carrying quadruplets is very high risk, so it is important that you are taking care of yourself, eating right, taking your vitamins. Also, There is a very high risk of miscarriage in the first several months of the pregnancy, so make sure you are taking it easy. Meredith nodded, trying to absorb everything at once, she knew that this was a medical nightmare. Four babies, entering the world at once, so many things could go wrong, so many things could happen to cause the babies to get hurt. She knew that she had to do everything she could to keep them safe. Dr. Johnson could tell they were very overwhelmed. Although she would be thrilled if she found out her and her husband were expecting quadruplets, but she understood that they were in a very tough situation and didn't want one baby, much less four. Dr. Johnson: I think this is enough for one day. Why don't we make an appointment for later this week. How does Thursday sound? Der: yes. Thank you Thursday would be fine. could we come in on our lunch hour? Dr. Johnson hesitated, knowing that they would be spending a long time at their next appointment, but didn't want to scare them off. Dr. Johnson: yes, that would be fine. Around 11? Meredith and Derek nodded, completely overwhelmed. Before leaving Dr. Johnson came over to Meredith and gave her a soft hug. Then she set the ultrasound pictures down next to Meredith. She had printed off several copied, knowing that they would cherish them in the coming months. "thank you." meredith said quietly. Dr. Johnson left, leaving Meredith and Derek alone. feeling very alone. "well. lets go home, I'll call the chief and tell him we're not coming back in. He'll understand." Derek said gently as Meredith changed back into her regular clothes. They picked up the pictures, Meredith couldn't bring herself to look at them yet, and then they went out to the car. In Derek's car they sat there, not saying anything. So many things had been going on, but in a weird way, Meredith was eerily calm. It surprised even her. After the original shock of learning she was carrying 4 babies, she had quickly calmed down and focused. She hadn't quite accepted the fact, but she knew that if she let anything happen to the babies she could never forgive herself. "lets go" Meredith said quietly, knowing she would deal with everything later. The rest of the ride home was silent. When they arrived at the trailer, Derek got out of the car with Meredith but didn't go inside. "do you want to talk?" he asked softly, not meeting her eyes. "no. I'm fine. are you okay?" "yeah. I..I'm going to go out for a bit." Derek said quietly, heading back towards the car. Meredith nodded, sensing he needed his space. "be careful." she said watching him get into the car. "and Derek." "yeah" "i'm sorry." Derek smiled weakly as he shut the door, driving off into the distance. Meredith walked into the trailer and for the first time realized how incredibly small it was. How would they fit four babies plus them into it? Four times the food, four times the diapers, four times the cribs and high chairs. Meredith went into Derek's bedroom and sat on his bed. She had already decided there would be no tears. They didn't solve anything and just made her head hurt even more. Besides, she could do this. She was strong. She could get through this. Meredith placed her hands on her stomach, marveling at the thought of four babies growing in there. In that instance she decided she would be the best mom she could for those babies. She would love them and cherish them and be the best mom ever. She would show all those nurses and doctors that she could be a mother, and a damn good one at that. But she wouldn't do it for them. She'd do it for herself. More importantly she would do it to prove to herself that she was not her mother. She would be a better mother than her mom could have even dreamed of becoming. Meredith picked up the ultrasound pictures and really looked at them for the first time. She couldn't help it as the tears began to slide down her face. But they were tears of hope, tears of amazement. It was a new start for four little babies. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - --- - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - -- - - Derek drank another beer, trying to drone out the pain. He knew that he would regret it later, but right now, he didn't care. "hey, why don't you take it easy, do you want me to call Meredith or someone to come get you?" Joe asked, sensing trouble with Derek. "no thanks though Joe. I'm fine." Derek's head pounded. 'what the f*ck did i get myself into' he thought to himself. four f*cking babies. four. how in the hell did that happen. god damn it. Derek took another sip of beer, in another desperate attempt to forget everything. He knew he was being unreasonable, that it wasn't anyones fault, it just happened. He knew that Meredith was probaly feeling even worse than him, she was after all, the mom and would be taking care of these four babies. Derek finished the beer but didn't get another. He just sat there thinking about everything. He knew he had an important decision to make. Four babies were a lot to deal with. That is a huge responsibility and for the first time Derek didn't think he could take it. As much as he loved Meredith, and as much as he wanted a future with her, four babies. that complicated matters. a lot. Derek made up his mind as he walked out to the car. He turned on the car, but then quickly decided against it. He pulled out his phone instead and quickly dialed the first number that came to his mind. mark: what the f*ck derek? its 2:30 am. why are you calling. derek: i'm at joes. i need a ride back to the trailer, i can't drive. Mark heard Derek's tone and immediatly knew something was very very wrong. mark: i'm on my way. dude are you okay? derek: yeah. i'm fine. i just want to go. mark: i'll be there in ten. Derek hung up and sat in the car with his head in his hands, his head pounding he finally let the tears come. They continued to flow until Mark knocked on his window. Meredith gave up waiting for Derek to come home and went to bed around 2am. It had been a long day and she knew she needed to be alert for work tomorrow. She crawled into Derek's bed and pulled his pillow close, inhaling she could smell his cologne on the pillow. She laid there for a while until she was able to drift asleep. Derek got to the trailer around 3am after Mark dropped him off. He stumbled into his room, quickly changing clothes before collapsing on the bed. Half an hour later he woke up with a kink in his neck, ignoring the throbbing pain in his head, he pulled himself up and went into the guest room. He couldn't bring himself to sleep next to Meredith tonight. He needed his space. - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- -- - - - - The next morning Meredith woke up before the alarm, which was rare. She quickly showered and got ready for work before checking on Derek. She heard him come home late and figured he had been out drinking. She went into the guest room and woke him up. der: what time is it? he mumbled, his head pounding. mer: a little after 6. you have to hurry, we have to be there in twenty minutes. Derek stood up and Meredith helped him into the tiny kitchen. She gave him some aspirin and waitied for him to shower. ten minutes later they were on their way to the hospital. They were silent until they got to the parking lot, then Derek finally spoke up. "mer, I..." Meredith interrupted Derek "Derek, listen, I completely understand if you want out. This isn't what you signed up for. We weren't expecting this, so I. I promise I won't be mad and I won't hold any hard feelings if you want out. You....You can forget all about this. all about us. and move on. I would understand if you wanted to." Meredith couldn't bring herself to look at Derek when she spoke. Derek took a deep breath looking out the window before answering Meredith. "mer...I...... I'm in this for the long run. One baby didn't scare me off, neither will four or five or six or seven. I will do what it takes to make this work. to make us work. I'm sorry you had to be alone last night, I needed some time to sort things through, but Meredith I...I love you so much and I love our babies too, and I won't leave them. They need me. They need there daddy." Meredith and Derek stopped into the chiefs office on their way into work. chief: hey! I didn't think I would see the two of you in here so soon. What can I do for you? der: well chief, we have some more news...about the pregnancy. chief: is everything okay? is the baby okay? you're still keeping it right? mer: um. yes, everything is okay. but um. we found out we are having quadruplets. The chief was speechless. He thought they were joking except for the serious looks on their faces. chief: wow. quadruplets. how are you guys dealing with this? are you okay with it? der: it was a huge shock, but...I think we've gotten used to the idea, I mean with us its either go big or go home, so I guess we're going big. The chief was impressed with how well they were handling things. chief: wow. well congratulations, four babies are a lot to care for, so I completly understand if you want time off of work to get things ready. Starting a family is important, and its very important you make enough time for them. mer: that's also why we're here, we have another appointment today at 11, so we might be missing a little work if it goes long. chief: oh, that's fine, in fact why don't you take the rest of the day off after the appointment, spend some time with yourselves, talk about baby names, do something exciting. They thanked the chief and then went to get ready for rounds. All too soon it was time for the appointment, so they got in Derek's car and drove over to meet with Dr. Johnson. _________________ Derek squeezed Meredith's hand as they were lead into their room for the appointment, knowing she was a little nervous. They were lead into a much larger room than the last time, this one filled with much more equipment and lots of doctors standing around reading a chart. "Ahh, there they are" Dr. Johnson said smiling at Meredith and Derek. "what's going on?" Meredith asked, nervoulsy. Dr. Johnson: come on in, sit down. Meredith and Derek sat down while Dr. Johnson filled them in. Dr. Johnson: well, I have some more exciting news for you. Are you ready? Mer: yeah, after last time, nothing would surprise me. Dr. Johnson swapped a glance with one of the other doctors before smiling at Meredith and Derek. dr. johnson: well, it would be easier for me to show you than to tell you. I was reviewing your last ultra-sound pictures after you left and I spotted exciting. She pulled out one of the pictures which had been enlargened and had marks on. "as you can see, here is your first baby, I've labeled them to make it easier to see and so its not so confusing. Here is baby A's head and body." Meredith was surprised at how small they looked, she knew that they were tiny and still growing, but they were ity-bity. "and here is baby B, over here is baby C's leg and here's the body and here is baby D. But after looking closer, I noticed this..." She pointed to the area almost off of the screen, behind baby D, where there appeared to be two more legs. "oh my god." meredith said when she saw this, turning to Derek, wide-eyed she whispered. "we're having quintuplets!" The doctors went on, explaining things and surprisinly both Meredith and Derek reacted very well, They were treating it more like it was a patient instead of themselves, but in the back of their heads they knew. They were introduced to a team of doctors, all ranging in specialties. They already knew that having quadruplets would be a very high risk pregnancy, but now adding one more baby to the mix just about tripled all of the risks. Meredith and Derek tried not to panic as they heard about everything that could go wrong, although the doctors were very optimistic and everything appeared fine so far, they knew that things could go wrong very quickly. Dr. Smith , one of the other doctors, began to talk to them about media. "now, with quintuplets there is usually a lot of media involved, and especially with your case, since they were naturally conceived. The press usually likes to be involved throughout the whole pregnancy, although I would understand if you would like to keep things quiet, sometimes word leaks out." Meredith and Derek nodded their understanding. "also, do you know which hospital you would like to have the babies at? I understand that you work at Seattle Grace, we can deliever the babies there if you would like, however we would like to bring in several specialists who are used to working with premature babies and multiples, but if you have someone in mind we can arrange for them to come in." Meredith looked at Derek, shaking her head. "no." she said. "no." "but she's the best." derek argued. "no." "no" Meredith repeated. "the last thing I want is your beautiful ex wife coming in here while I'm completely fat and hormonal and having her know that we f*cked up and now we're having quintuplets. so no." Meredith said this all very calmly but inside she was boiling. Sure, last time Addie was here she was very nice, she even hugged her, but not now, once Addison had ammunition against Derek, she wouldn't hesitate to use it, Meredith was sure. Derek could sense this was a sensitive issue for Meredith so he just agreed. for now. "yeah, okay sure. We won't bring her in." Meredith smiled, satisfied and turned back to listen to the doctors. They were overwhelmed with instructions and a long list of things not to do with a similarly long list of 'must-do's' Coffee was out the window, absolutely no exceptions. so was hard exercise and strenuous physical activities until the very crucial time for miscarriages passed which was for about two more months for quints. Meredith nodded to all of her new restrictions until she heard the one that she knew would be impossible. "and of course until the period of miscarriages passes you will have to refrain from strenuous physical activities" "yes, you already mentioned that" meredith said "well, that includes sex. you won't be able to have sex i'm afraid for about 2 months until we're sure the babies are developing correctly." |

Meredith and Derek just looked at each other. They knew that that would be impossible. Especially for them. "you're joking right?" Derek asked hopefully. "Unfortunately not. But you can come in in a couple of weeks and we can see how the babies are developing and if everything is going good, we might be able to change that. " Meredith let out a sigh. This pregnancy thing was getting to be harder than she thought. The rest of the appointment continued. The doctors mostly gave them tons of information about having multiples, more specifically quints. They got new ultrasound pictures and had the doctors label each blob, baby A, B,C..etc. "one more thing" Dr. Johnson said. "in the future, it will be easier for us to identify each baby by names. Because as you can imagine it can get quite confusing with all the letters. And normally we identify the babies by which ones were born first, A then B, etc. But usually parents like to know which baby was which while they were developing, so we can continue to refer to your babies as the letters, but it might be easier if you think of some names in the next few months and we can refer to the babies by name." Meredith and Derek nodded. "when will we be able to know what we are having, how many boys and how many girls?" Derek asked, knowing that both he and Meredith didn't want anymore surprises. "in a month or so we should be able to have a pretty good idea, but I'm warning you it can be very hard with quints to tell the sex of of each baby. We can usually determine two or three but it is hard to determine all five." Meredith and Derek nodded before getting ready to go. They made their next appointment for three weeks later. The appointments would get closer together the further in the pregnancy Meredith got, to ensure that the babies are okay. Meredith and Derek left and got back in the car, relived that the chief had given them the rest of the day off. "lets do something fun" Meredith suggested. They were feeling very responsible for these babies and were worried about them and needed to just relax and enjoy being pregnant. "what do you want to do?" "lets go look at baby stuff." Meredith said, suddenly excited. "I know we still have like 7 months still, but hey, lets just look around. think about cribs and high chairs." Derek smiled, glad that Meredith was accepting her pregnancy and trying to make the best of it. They headed off to the mall in search of baby stuff. _________________ They arrived at the mall and walked into a huge store that only carried baby stuff. They were quickly overwhelmed with everything at once, A salesperson hurried over to help them. "Hello! Is there anything I can help you with?" The bubbly salesperson asked. "um, well were really just looking..for now atleast. thanks though" Meredith answered. "oh! Are you expecting?" the salesperson asked Meredith and Derek. "uh. well um. yeah. yes we are." "oh congratulations!! Is this the family's first baby?" Meredith and Derek looked at each other a little amused that she obviously thought they were married, but they decided to just pretend that everything was okay and going just as planned. "well, actually they will be our first babies." Derek said, anxious to see the lady's reaction. "oh! Are you having Twins?" she said very excited. For the first time they realized what a big deal it was for them to be pregnant with quints. Plus, they could have some fun with it. "actually we're having quintuplets." Meredith said, watching her reaction very carefully. "oh my god. are you serious?" Meredith held back her laugh as Derek convinced her that they were expecting five babies. The saleslady quickly started showing them stuff around the store, anxiously awaiting the pay increase she knew would come with preparing a family to have quintuplets. Meredith and Derek looked around at gorgeous cribs and beautiful nursery ideas and changing tables and dressers. They were quickly realizing how expensive it was going to be to have quints, but they knew they could handle it. Walking around the store, hand-in-hand, they started to feel the excitement that came from being pregnant. After looking at countless cribs and baby outfits they decided to go to the food court to get something to drink. After sitting down with their drinks, Meredith finally decided to bring up what had been on her mind since learning she was expecting quints. "Derek, i've been thinking and now that we're going to be having five babies, well...ithinkwewillneedabiggerhouse. " Meredith spoke quickly, unsure of how Derek would react. "what?" Derek asked though he thought he knew what she wanted but just wanted to hear her say it again. Meredith sighed. "I think we will need a bigger house." Derek smiled. "i think you're right. We should start looking soon, we will want to be moved in and settled when the babies are born." Derek said smiling, happy that they were moving forward with their lives. They went back to Derek's trailer and Derek made an appointment with the relater while Meredith made a list of all the people they needed to tell about the pregnancy, starting with Derek's mom. "no, come on Mer lets wait at least another week or so." "Derek you know we can't wait any longer, when she finds out we have been keeping something this big from her its going to kill her." Meredith said. It was a week later, Meredith and Derek had told everyone about the unexpected pregnancy. Everyone was very surprised, but also very supportive. Izzie was still making muffins in case Meredith began to crave them. And George was excited about becoming an uncle, times 5. All of their friends knew, so did most of the people at the hospital, the only people left to tell was Derek's family in New York. They had already decided not to bring Meredith's father into this, even though Lexie knew, Meredith had specifically asked her not to mention it to her father. He had caused enough pain in Meredith's life and she didn't want her babies to hurt like she did because of him. Meredith was trying to convince Derek to tell his mom, even though she was nervous about it as well. She knew that his mom loved Addison and was disappointed when they got divorced. Meredith also knew that when she found out that Derek had gotten the 'slutty intern' responsible for breaking up him and Addison pregnant, that she would be hurt and mad. But she knew that it would take time. Especially because the quints will be the first grandchildren to be born in the Shepard family. Meredith just hoped that she would come around. She wanted her babies to have a grandma. "fine." Derek said, knowing that Meredith was right. He very nervously dialed the phone number, praying that his mother wouldn't be home. "hello." no such luck. Derek took a deep breath before exhaling slowly. "hi mom! It's Derek! how are you?" "Derek! Oh It's so good to hear from you honey! What can I do for you?" "well mom, I ..um. I have some really big news to tell you." "oh! Honey are you and Addie getting back together finally? I knew you guys would come around, you just needed some time to work things out and-" Derek cut off his mom, knowing how bad this conversation would go. "no mom. we're not getting back together. Addie and I are over, I still love her but not in the same way, we have gone our separate ways and are much happier." "oh honey, but if you would just try maybe..-" "mom, no. please. this is hard enough as it is." "what is it honey? I mean I understand if you and Addie are over, It is just hard to loose one of our family members. Addie was like a daughter to me, you know that. But what did you have to tell me?" In that split second, Derek made up his mind on what he had to do. This was huge news he was going to tell his mom, really really huge, not just to him and Meredith but to the whole Shepard family, they would soon be welcoming quintuplets into their family and deserved to hear this the right way. "mom, I'm coming to visit. I have really important news to tell you, but I want to do it in person. I...I'm bringing Meredith, she...you will love her. Is that okay?" As Derek's mother expressed her happiness at the news of her son's returning home, Derek looked at Meredith who had just paled about 47 shades lighter. Derek knew he should have talked about this with her first, but he just thought of it and knew it was important. She would understand, eventually. Derek's mom went on and on about how glad she was and how she would make Derek's favorite meal, not even remembering that he was bringing a guest. a female guest. Derek was concentrating on Meredith, who although she was smiling a weak smile, looked nothing like herself. Her skin was pale and her breathing was a little shorter than it should be. "are you okay?" Derek mouthed, his eyes growing with concern for her and their babies. Meredith tried to calm down, she knew it was a silly thing to get worked up about, she would have to meet the family eventually, but she had hoped it wouldn't be so soon. "yeah I'm fine." she whispered. "I'm going to get some water." she said, getting up and walking into the kitchen of the trailer. Resting her hands on the sink, she took a couple of deep breaths. Ignoring the curse words that were running through her head, she tried to think clearly. It would be fine. They would like her. eventually. Meredith placed her hand on her stomach, whispering softly to herself... "well guys, i guess we're going to New York." _________________ Meredith nervously went through the names of Derek's family again in her head. They were on the plane on their way to New York to stay and visit with his family for the next three days. The Chief had graciously given them the time off, knowing how important their 'big news' was and that it would be better to tell them in person. Meredith had been to the doctor before going on the trip, to make sure everything was okay with the babies and that she was fine to fly. Dr. Johnson assured Meredith that the babies were fine and seemed to be developing normally. She even cleared Meredith for sex, but warned her it may feel a little uncomfortable at first because one of the babies was down so low. Although she had been cleared, they hadn't had sex yet, Meredith was too stressed about the trip to New York and Derek was busy arranging everything. Meredith already had a baby bump and had to wear maternity clothes, she figured having quints made you grow faster than if you were just having one baby. She was three months pregnant with the quints and each day they got more and more excited about meeting their five little babies. They had started looking for houses to move into, but so far they had had no luck. So instead they were taking three days to fly to New York and break the big news. "Laura and James are mom and dad, James died five years ago from cancer. They had four kids, Derek's the oldest, then Erin is married to Steve, then John and then Nancy. John just got engaged to Sarah and Nancy was currently single. " Meredith quietly whispered everything she had been memorizing for the past week. "mer, honey every thing's going to be fine." Derek said, trying to reassure her, but honestly, he wasn't so sure himself. He knew his parents always wanted grandchildren, and since he is the oldest, he was responsible for producing them first. When he and Addie got married, his family was so excited that there might soon be new babies, but their hopes were quickly crushed when Addison determined that she wasn't ready for a baby and wasn't planning on having one any time soon. His mom pretty much gave up on any hope of Derek having kids, and turned to Erin and Steve. Once his mom found out that Meredith was pregnant with quints none the less, she would be quickly asking about a wedding and he knew it would crush his mother when he told them they weren't planning on getting married. At least not yet. Derek knew that family drama was one of Meredith's biggest fears and he knew that this weekend would be very hard on her because drama was one thing that the Shepard family was never short of. The plane landed and Meredith's stomach was in knots, but she knew it wasn't from the babies. "do you think she will be able to tell right away that I'm pregnant?" Meredith worriedly asked Derek for the millionth time. "honey, no, She's never met you before and although you are beautiful you are also insanely tiny, you now have a little more...substance, but you don't look pregnant. Not yet." Meredith knew he was right, she could only really tell she was pregnant when she lifted up her shirt, but still, her face was flushed and a little swollen and her boobs were bigger, much to Derek's delight. They gathered their luggage and made their way to a taxi. They were planning on going to their hotel and dropping off their stuff before freshing up and meeting the family for a big family dinner at the house. Derek's mom wanted them to stay with her, but Derek knew that that would be too much to ask of Meredith, so he insisted that they stay in a hotel, but promised to spend lots of time together at the house. Laura (Der's mom) wasn't thrilled that he was bringing a female guest with, but quickly learned not to mention it when Derek threatened not to come if Meredith wasn't welcomed. Meredith and Derek got in the taxi, Derek smiled when he saw Meredith loosening up and enjoying the sights of NYC. They got to the hotel and got ready for the big family dinner. that's your house?" Meredith asked in awe. They were parked in front of a huge Victorian style house with several cars in the driveway. "everyones already here?" Meredith asked. "yes. Meredith honestly it will be okay. But remember, lets just take it slow, we don't have to blurt everything out at once." Derek said nervously. Meredith was nervous enough, but now seeing that Derek was nervous, she about lost it. For once she wished she had someone to turn to, but her mom was gone and well, so was her dad. "Are you ready to go in?" Derek asked Mer "um. I gotta make a call first, why don't you go in and then I'll meet you?" Meredith said, even though she didn't want to go in alone, she needed to talk to Christina. "why don't I just wait outside the car." Derek said, knowing Meredith would want privacy but wouldn't want to go inside alone. Meredith smiled and quickly dialed Christina's number. chris- hey mer how's New York? mer- oh my god Christina, im so f*cking nervous. we're about to go in and god they are all going to hate me and- chris- MEREDITH. MEREDITH. listen to me, everything is going to be fine. You are a strong person, heck you're carrying five babies, you are a mega strong person, something as stupid as family can't possibly be anything compared to that. Meredith smiled, just talking to Christina made her feel better. "thanks chris, you're the best. I'll call you later." With that she hung up the phone and stepped out of the car, mustering all of her courage as her and Derek walked hand in hand up to the door and rang the bell. Laura answered the door, anxious to see her son. "oh! Derek honey!!" Laura said, taking her son in her arms. "hi mom...mm. yes. nice to see you too. uh-huh mom" Derek said after hugging her mom trying to get her off of him. "oh Derek how have you been? you must be tired and hungry from the plane ride, please come in" Laura said ushering them in, still not acknowledging Meredith. Meredith shook her head, very uncomfortable, before following Derek into the beautiful house. Derek was about to introduce Meredith to his mom but as soon as they stepping into the house they were bombarded with people coming from all directions to greet them...but mostly Derek. "oh Derek! It's been too long!" "oh mom can you believe he's finally back" "hey bro! I've missed you are you finally coming back home?" "Derek i can't believe its taken you this long" Meredith was quickly overwhelmed with the whole family thing. Everyone was hugging Derek and smiling and talking and Meredith was just standing there, she knew that Derek missed his family and was thrilled to see them again but wished he would introduce her or something. Derek was surrounded by his family members, hugging them and exchanging greetings. He knew he should introduce Meredith but he couldn't make his way back over to her without being stopped and hugged by another sibling or sibling in law or someone else. Meredith was just about to walk right back out the door and forget about everything that had happened, but then a beautiful blond walked up to Meredith and smiled at her. "you must be Meredith" the friendly woman said. She appeared to be close to Meredith's age, just a little younger than Derek. "um. yes hi, its nice to meet you." Meredith said sticking out her hand. "Meredith, I'm Erin Derek's sister." "oh Erin, I've heard so much about you" Meredith said, she knew how close Derek and her were when they were younger, they were the closest in age and she was the only one in the family that Derek ever talked about. Erin smiled, she could tell how tense and nervous Meredith was and wanted to make her feel more at home. "I'm sorry about all of this" Erin said, referencing all of the chaos surrounding Derek. "This family takes some getting used to, we're all pretty close so it gets crazy when someone comes back. But you'll get used to it. I promise" Meredith was immediately put at ease around Erin. Although she looked nothing like Derek except for the eyes, she was friendly just like him. Meredith even found herself opening up to Erin which surprised even her. "yeah, I'm not really used to the whole family thing. My mother died last year and my dad...well he's not in the picture" "oh I'm sorry to hear that" Erin said sweetly. "it's fine." Meredith said smiling. Meredith looked nervously again towards Derek, wishing he would come back to her, even though Erin was being very nice to her, she still would be more comfortable around Derek. "Mom, John, Nance, guys c'mon. Let them inside gosh. They're probably exhaustedly from their flight, lets go into the living room." Erin said. Meredith smiled at her gratefully as everyone began moving deeper inside the house. Derek finally made his way back to Meredith and wrapped his arm around her waist. "i'm so sorry" he said softly, kissing her hair as they walked into the living room. Meredith sighed nervously "its fine." she said as they sat down on the couch across from the rest of the family. "well here we go." Meredith thought to herself as Derek began to introduce her. "mom, guys, everyone...I'd like you to meet my...my girlfriend Meredith." Meredith smiled softly at the intimidating faces that were watching her. "um. hi it's nice to finally meet you all" Meredith said. The rest of the family just sat there not saying anything, making Meredith feel very uncomfortable. Only Erin smiled at her. "and this is Laura, my mom, and Erin and her husband Steve, John and my little sister Nancy" Derek said Derek sort of glared at his family, wishing they would be more supportive and at least pretend to be interested in Meredith. Laura finally spoke up. "so you must be the one who's responsible for splitting up Addie and Derek." Meredith sat there shocked. She honestly didn't expect them to say that. Think it yes, and imply it yes, but to straight out say it. She had no idea. Derek stepped in for her. "mom." he said appalled. He knew how much she loved Addison, but thought that she could put it in the past for his sake. "mom please." Derek said. "so Meredith" Erin said, stepping in. "how did you and Derek meet?" Meredith knew that it was normally a harmless question and she was just tying to lighten the mood, but it just made things harder. "we um. We met at the hospital. We both work there." Derek rubbed Meredith's back. "why don't we all go eat." Derek finally said standing up. As much as he hated the circumstances, he was thrilled to finally be with his family again. They moved into the dinning room where a beautiful table was set. They sat down and Laura brought out all of the food. The family talked to Derek, still pretty much ignoring her. Meredith quietly ate her food as the family and Derek smiled and laughed. For the longest time Meredith had wanted a family to be part of. She wanted to have the big family dinners, get together for Christmas and holidays. Have her family cheering her on at every piano recital and soccer game. And now, when she finally had a chance for the family she always wanted....they didn't want her. Finally the conversation slowed as they all, including Derek, seemed to remember about Meredith. "so. what brings you guys out here so unexpectedly?" John asked. Meredith's stomach clenched when she heard Derek's brother ask that. Because she knew that Derek would tell everyone the real reason. "well, Meredith and I have some really. really big news." Derek said smiling although his stomach was in knots. The family stared at him and Nancy blurted out "oh my god you're not getting married are you?" "Nancy!" Erin whispered to her younger sister. "thank you Nancy" Derek said before continuing. "no. we are not getting married. but--" "thank the lord" Laura muttered under her breath. Meredith didn't know how much longer she could stand this. She thought her own family was dysfunctional and that was hard enough to deal with, but now with Derek's family treating her like dirt. She had enough. She didn't have to deal with this. Like they said, they weren't getting married so why in the hell should she put up with this?" "we're pregnant." Meredith blurted out, her anger taking over. "pregnant with quintuplets. So thanks for making the mother of your grandchildren feel welcomed." With that Meredith stood up and ran to the door, grabbing the keys to the rental car. Tears blurring her vision she drove out of the driveway trying to find her way out of the neighborhood. Derek's family sat there stunned, unable to say anything. Derek couldn't believe what just happened. He didn't even know what to do. Go chase after Meredith or stay here and try to explain things to his family. "seriously Derek? Seriously? You f*cked that w***e and now she's pregnant. God what the hell is the matter with you?" Laura yelled at her son. Nancy was even madder. "Derek. God is she seriously having quintuplets. like five kids. five little whores running around. what the hell. god" "guys. please. " Derek said. He felt like he was being pulled in two completely opposite directions. He wanted to go find Meredith and comfort her but another part of him felt like he needed to stay with his family. He hadn't seen them in years and had missed them so much. In all the chaos nobody noticed that Erin had disappeared as well. Meredith arrived back at the hotel and fumbled to find the key through her blurred vision. She finally found it and stumbled into the room, shutting the door behind her. She couldn't believe how rude and mean the family had treated her. She collapsed on the bed, no longer crying, just hurt beyond belief. And it killed her even more that Derek didn't defend her, that he didn't come after her. Meredith heard pounding on her door. She stood up, expecting Derek. Instead she found Erin. "Meredith please, let me in." Erin said through the door. Meredith didn't know why she was here, she was sick enough of the family even if Erin was the nicest of them all. But she finally caved and opened the door, allowing Erin to step inside. "Meredith I'm so sorry about how the family acted. I...I don't even know what to say. I...I can't believe it. But Meredith I'm so sorry." Meredith nodded and made room for Erin to sit down on the bed next to her. "but please lets try to forget about it. You must be starving you hardly ate anything can I take you out to one of my favorite restaurants. It's real close and has great food." Erin said hopefully. Meredith was really hungry, since she was in fact eating for five plus her. And although part of her wanted to stay and just curl up and eat ice cream, she knew she had to take care of herself because of the babies. "okay. just let me freshen up" Meredith said standing up and fixing her makeup. She grabbed her purse and turned off her phone, she didn't want to have to deal with Derek on top of all of this. "okay I'm ready." She said smiling softly before following Erin out of the hotel. - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - -- - - - -- - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Derek's family was still in chaos, arguing about Meredith and the babies. Everyone against her except Derek who was meekly making excuses for her. Finally Derek had enough. He didn't need to take this. "guys please, you've already ruined one night, I'm going back to the hotel to be with Meredith. This is hard enough on us and we, I, would really appreciate it if you could treat Meredith nicely. She's having a really hard time finding out she's carrying quints so please for my sake treat her with some respect. After all she is carrying your grandchildren. " With that Derek walked out of the house and flagged a cab. He got to the hotel and rummaged through his pockets before finding the spare key. He quickly let himself into the room and much to his dismay found it empty. "chit" he whispered when Meredith was no where to be found. He quickly dialed her cell phone but it was turned off. He left her a message, hoping she would get it soon and come back. meredith, its me. honey I'm so so sorry. Meredith please come back to the hotel so we can talk. I love you Mer. Please come back. I'm so sorry they treated you like they but honestly there not that bad. Mer please I love you. come back. Derek sighed, collapsing on the bed not knowing what else to do. Meredith hadn't been to New York before and could easily get lost or turned around. Derek knew Meredith was a big girl and could take care of herself, but she also had to take care of their babies. Derek took his head in his hands, trying to figure out what to do next. _________________ Meredith laughed as Erin shared another one of her many stories. They were sitting in a little diner, and had just finished eating. Meredith was feeling so much better already, Erin was being so sweet and kind and really knew how to take her mind off of things. "so...are you really pregnant with quintuplets?" Erin asked Meredith cautiously. It was the first direct conversation they had had about what had happened. Meredith nodded. "yeah. It was a huge surprise to us. Derek and I....well Derek and I had just gotten back together and were no where near ready to get married much less start a family and then I find out I'm pregnant with quints. We've grown up a lot these past few months. We've had to." Erin was so surprised that Derek had gotten her pregnant, usually he was so careful with this kind of stuff. "so have you talked about marriage?" Erin asked. "yeah. But Derek's already been married once, I don't want him to rush into something he's not ready for. I love him, I really really love him and I'm pretty sure he loves me too, but when-if- we get married I want it to be because of us. Not because of them." Meredith said, her hand on her stomach. "wow." Erin said, sympathetic for the huge role Meredith was taking on. "Meredith I know that tonight was crazy. And some of the things they said were inexcusable. But this is a lot for them to comprehend too. We....we haven't heard from Derek since we found out from Addie that he was divorced, and then he calls, telling us he is coming out and bringing you with him. We were expecting a marriage proposal at the most, we had no idea." Meredith nodded. "I know. It's really hard for everyone. No one wants this to happen, no one dreams about becoming a single mom to five babies with a dad whose family hates her. It's just that I've had a really bad family experience. My mom was never there for me and my dad....my dad left me for another family. He left me to take care of his other daughters. He was never there for me and I don't want that for my babies. I want them to have grandparents and aunts and uncles but most importantly I want them to have a dad. That's why I'm here. Not because I want to because god knows I would rather be anywhere but here, but I need to. This is something I need to do. I just hope that the family can come to accept me." Erin felt so bad for Meredith, hearing her life story and now knowing what a hard position she was in. Meredith looked at her watch. "I should probably go. It's getting late." Erin nodded and paid the bill, they walked out to the car and drove back over to Meredith's hotel. Once they got there Meredith thanked Erin for everything. "Erin, I'm so grateful for you. I...I know it must have been hard for you to accept me, I know how much everyone loved Addison, but I just want to thank you so much for everything. You....you made me realize how important family really is. You treated me like a sister and you don't even know me. I really appreciate that Erin. So thank you so much." Meredith hugged Erin tight before going up to the hotel room, trying to figure out what to do about Derek. Meredith quietly opened the door, expecting the hateful words to start coming out of his mouth like bullets. Instead she found him in tears on the bed. Without saying anything he ran over to Meredith and pulled her to him tight. He just held her, silently, as tears ran down both their faces. "i'm sorry" Meredith whispered into his chest, but Derek backed away so he could look into her eyes. "no." he said, chocking back the tears. "i'm sorry. Meredith I'm so so sorry. I shouldn't have let you run. I should have gone after you sooner, I...I was so worried something happened to you, It wasn't until Steve called that I realized that Erin was with you and you were safe. I....I'm so sorry about everything, I shouldn't have made you come here with me, I already booked the first flight out tomorrow morning. We're going home. We don't have to do this Mer, now they know, It's up to them how they deal with it, but we've done our part. We're going home honey. " Meredith smiled through her tears. "thanks." was all she was able to say before chocking up again. "I'm really bad at the family scene aren't I?" she asked laughing through her tears. Derek just shook his head. "no, you we're great. now lets get some sleep, our plane leaves early tomorrow." |

Meredith and Derek excitedly looked over the blueprints for the millionth time. It was a week later and they were back in Seattle. They had pretty much tried to forget about what had happened in New York, although Derek's mom and siblings have been calling him daily, he hasn't been taking there calls, they've only talked to Erin and her husband Steve and they are their only connection to the family at the moment. So after getting back they decided they really needed to get serious about finding a house for them to move into. But they couldn't find one that was perfect for them. They knew that five kids would complicate things, but it was almost impossible to find a house with enough bedrooms and bathrooms and with a nice layout. So they decided to build. It was a huge step for them, especially because they weren't married and didn't plan to be anytime in the near future. But it was a step that they were ready to make. They both knew that they were in this for the long run and didn't need to be married to be committed to each other and to their babies when they were born. So they had blueprints drawn up and decided to build on Derek's land. The construction starts tomorrow and they promised to have it done in 5 weeks, which they thought was incredible, but Derek of course had hired the best. "ohh Derek I'm so excited! Its going to be just perfect!" Meredith exclaimed looking over the nursery plans. Since they were building they could custom make their nursery for the quints, which is what they did of course. The whole upper level was going to be for the babies. There was a huge room where the nursery would be. They would fill it with all the cribs and dressers and everything, that would connect to a huge bathroom where there would be two sinks and a built in changing table, and of course a shower and toilet. Then over further there would be the rooms since they wouldn't stay babies forever and when they grow up they won't want to all stay in the same room. So there are five separate bedrooms. They had thought long and hard about that decision. They wanted to keep them together, make some of them share a room, but they didn't know the sex of the babies and didn't know if that would work out, so they decided that they would just make five rooms. All of the bedrooms connected to a large playroom in the center of the upstairs with the rooms surrounding it. Meredith and Derek were convinced that this was going to be the perfect house to raise quints in. Downstairs there would be a big kitchen and family room, with of course a nice master bedroom suite. They would also have a big basement for the kids when they get older. Everything was turning out perfect. "okay hurry we have to leave soon!" Derek said glad that Meredith was so excited about their new house. Meredith put down the blueprints and joined Derek in the car. They were on their way to the doctors appointment to hopefully find out the sex of the babies! As the cool gel was spread on Meredith's body they watched fascinated as the picture slowly formed. "oh there so cute!" Meredith said looking at the tiny screen. Instead of just seeing blobs, now they could make out the figures of the little babies. Dr. Johnson took Meredith's blood pressure, did some blood work, all the usual stuff before Meredith finally asked the question that had been in their minds all day. "so, can you tell the sex of the babies yet?" Dr. Johnson smiled as she navigated the ultrasound equipment again and began searching for the babies. "well. " She said a few moments later. "Like I said before, Its not a hundred percent accurate, especially in your case, but I'll give it a shot." "I think that three of the babies, babies A, C and D, are girls." Meredith smiled as Derek squeezed her hand. The excitement was building now that the house was in progress of being built and now that they know the sex of the babies. "what about baby B and E?" Derek asked. "well" Dr. Johnson answered. "I can't quite tell, they seem to be hiding again. I can only see their heads and baby E's leg. So I'm not sure. We can check again next time, but for now I'd say that you'll be having three baby girls for sure. Maybe more?" Meredith smiled at Derek. They were really going to be parents. They were really going to have quintuplets. "now you can start thinking of names!" Dr. Johnson said smiling at the happy couple. She was glad that they had made such a turn around from when she first told them that they were pregnant. She was glad that they were looking forward to the babies, she just hoped that nothing would go wrong. They finished their appointment and Meredith changed back into her clothes, but not before admiring her large baby bump in the mirror. "I never thought that I would like getting fat." She told Derek smiling. "i don't think you're fat." he said kissing her. Meredith laughed. "you tell me that when I'm giving birth to your kids." They went back to the trailer, the whole ride home they started thinking about baby names. "what about Penelope? " Derek asked Meredith holding back a grin. "are you serious?" Meredith asked. Derek just nodded. "Derek, there is no way I'm naming our daughter Penelope. She will get made fun of and it isn't even that cute. " "well, what about Rose?" he asked. This time Meredith just glared at him. "sorry bad joke." Meredith grinned suddenly. "fine, we can name one of the babies Rose if I can name one of them Finn" Derek scowled as Meredith laughed. "so not funny" he said. Meredith just smiled. "sorry hunny." "but seriously. what do you think we should name them. gosh. Derek I'm so excited. I can't believe we're having three little girls." "I know, three mini Meredith's running around the house. How perfect. They'll be able to get away with whatever they want you know." Meredith smiled. "we'll see." They got back to the trailer and had about an hour before their shifts started. So they broke out the baby books and began looking for names. It was three weeks later. The house looked incredible and both Meredith and Derek couldn't believe how much they had gotten done in such a short time. It was almost all finished and the painters had already started painting a few of the rooms. Meredith had developed quite the baby bump. Her stomach was huge (atleast for her) but surprisingly she wasn't self-conscious about it, instead she loved wearing her maternity clothes so everyone knew that she was going to be a mommy soon. Meredith and Derek had been working a lot lately, trying to stack up time and money so when the babies were born they could afford to take time off. Meredith couldn't believe she was already 5 months pregnant with quintuplets. It seemed to un-real. Like a dream. She also never thought that she would be this excited about it. They were on their way to another one of Meredith's doctor appointments. They were hoping to tell the sex of the other two babies. "so, lets go over the names again" Derek said as they were driving there. Over the past few weeks they had come up with several names for the babies and had lots that they all liked. "well" Meredith began. "there's the 'S' names: Skye, Samantha, Savanna, and if the others are boys then Shane and Seth and if they are girls Sabina and Stephanie" Derek nodded. "and there are the 'J' names: Jasmine, Jordin, Jayde and if the others are boys than Justin and Jack and if they are girls Jamie and Jennifer" Meredith sighed. "why is it so hard to come up with the perfect names. They all sound perfect but than again they don't sound right." Derek knew that Meredith was really worried about the names. "honey, don't worry, whatever we decide will be perfect, the kids will hate their names at time and other times they will love it, but seriously Mer, their names aren't the most important thing, as long as they know we love them , that's what matters." Meredith smiled, Derek always knew how to make her feel better. They got to the doctors office and quickly went through the routine work, bloodwork, blood pressure, everything. Finally it was time for the ultrasound. Meredith and Derek held their breath while Dr. Johnson tried to find the other two babies. "well, just remember that nothing is 100% accurate, but I believe that the other two babies are both...girls. I think you're having all girls." Meredith and Derek both let out their breaths. Meredith quickly looked at Derek. If you didn't know him well you wouldn't think anything was wrong, but Meredith saw it...that split second when they heard the news, his face dropped, his eyes sad, but then it was gone and his eyes were shinning (though not as bright as before) and his smile was back. Meredith felt so bad for him. She knew that although he would never admit it, he really wanted a son. At least one. Meredith gave Derek a kiss and whispered into his ear. "i'm sorry. maybe we'll just have to have another baby until we have a boy" she said winking, though pretty much joking she didn't think she could handle 5 kids, much less adding one more "no Mer, I'm thrilled, honest. Five little baby girls, I just think you're jealous because now I'll be in love with five other girls beside you." Meredith smiled at Derek as they finished their appointment. They got back in the car and drove back to work, before making a detour of course in the back of the car. =) Meredith was in the middle of surgery when it first happened. She was in the middle of fixing a little boy's brain when she felt it. It was just a little kick, but it felt like so much more. She placed one of her hands on her stomach. "oh my god" she whispered. She couldn't believe it, she felt her little babies move. She didn't know which one, she thought it was baby D but she didn't know for sure, but it didn't matter. She felt her babies move. They were really in there. Meredith concentrated once again and quickly finished the surgery. When she was done she quickly ran to find Derek, bumping into Izzie on the way. "Hey Mer! wow. You look great!! How are the girls doing?" Izzie asked smiling. Meredith was glowing. "you'll never believe it Izz, they're finally moving. I can feel them now, it started earlier today in surgery I felt one of them kick, and now they haven't stopped!" Izzie gave Mer a hug. "oh thats so great!!" "yeah. it's the most amazing feeling!" Meredith put Izzie's hand on her stomach and watched her face as she felt her babies move. "oh Mer!!" Izzie said gushing. "wow. that's awesome!" Meredith gave Izzie one last hug before going to find Derek in his office. "you'll never believe what happened to me in surgery." Meredith said smiling. "what?" "the babies started moving. One of them kicked me and now they're all playing soccer." Derek gave Meredith a hug. "oh honey we're really going to be parents!" He said smiling. He couldn't believe this day was here. He never thought that they would be the first of their friends to have kids. He thought Izzie would beat them for sure, but nope, karma has a funny way of working things out. Derek's smiled got even bigger when he felt his babies move inside of Mer. "wow. it's...so ....so....amazing." he said struggling to find words to describe how he was feeling. "yeah. it really is!" Meredith was now 5 months pregnant and had a huge baby bump. She didn't know how she was going to last four more months, it was already very hard for her to do simple things. Their house was finished and it was amazing. The nursery was perfect and Meredith couldn't wait to meet her little girls and have them there. They had decided to paint the walls a soft baby yellow, in case the doctors were wrong and they had boys. They already had the cribs and dressers and rocking chairs and everything set up. It was perfect. Now all they needed was the babies. Meredith and Derek had been working as much as they possibly could, saying up the time and money for when the babies were born. Just getting ready for the babies made them much closer to each other, however it did alienate them from their friends. As much as everyone tried to include Meredith and Derek, it was a different lifestyle. They had exchanged late nights at Joe's, to birthing classes, and had switched a girls night in reading magazines for a doctor's appointment and a baby name book. But they were okay with that. They knew that they needed to get things ready for when their babies come. Despite their original fears, both Meredith and Derek truly believed that they would be able to love and nurture all five babies. They already were so different and they hadn't even been born. Baby A was the strong one, she could stand getting kicked and hit by her sisters. Baby B was the quiet one, she didn't do too much, Baby C was the soccer star, she was always kicking someone. Baby D was a mommy's girl, she always calmed down when Mer put her hand on her stomach, and Baby E was the little one. The doctors were most worried about her, while the other babies seemed to be growing normally for quints, baby E wasn't quite keeping up. Meredith is on a strict diet, and both her and Derek stick to it, they don't want to do anything that would jeopardize the babies. They know how risky their pregnancy is and are so thankful nothing has gone wrong yet. - - - - - - - - - - --- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Meredith just finished helping Derek with a very successful surgery. They were on their way to the cafeteria to meet Izzie and George for lunch. "can you believe how good that went?" Meredith asked, still high from the surgery. "yeah, we did amazing. Thanks for the help" Derek said as the approached the table. They got their food and sat down by Izzie and George. Izzie noticed a wincing look on Mer's face. "are you okay?" Meredith smiled, "yeah I'm fine, the girls have just been more active today than usual." Meredith rubbed her stomach, trying to calm down the girls. They munched on their food, talking about their surgeries and cases and a little about the babies. "have you guys thought any more about names?" George asked. Derek smiled. "well, we decided we want to wait until they are born to name them, it just doesn't feel right to have them named before they are born. But we do know we want them to all start with the same letter, so they all feel important and part of our family." "that's a cool idea" Izzie gushed. "do you know what letter you want yet?" Derek shook his head, "no but we've thought about some of the middle names, we might name one of them after my grandmother, Lucy, and one after Mer's grandmother, Rebbecca" During the conversation, no one seemed to notice that Meredith had gotten very quiet and pale. She was rubbing her stomach with a grimace on her face. _________________ Meredith let out a moan as a sharp pain shot through her stomach. Everyone quickly stopped their conversation and turned to her. "what's wrong?" George asked "are you okay?" Derek said concerned. "what happened?" Izzie said worriedly. Meredith struggled for breath as another sharp pain ran through her body. "oh my god" she cried. Gasping for breath, she managed to mutter out " i think I'm having contractions" The blood ran out of Derek's face as he instantly paled, paralyzed with fear. Izzie immediately jumped up and pulled out her pager. As everyone moved around her, helping her into the closet wheelchair and quickly pushing her down the hall, all meredith could think about was that it was too soon. "it's too early." she said between breaths. "goddddddd" she yelled as another sharp pain hit her. The last thing she remembered was the bright light of the emergency room flashing before everything went black. |

Meredith was rushed into the maternity wing They quickly began hooking her up to machines and running tests. Derek was in a full blown panic. "she's out cold. Izzie she passed out. " Derek said, his voice displaying his fear. Izzie tried to calm him as she helped the doctors by explaining the situation. "It might have been contractions." Dr. Johnson said That made Derek sit up and listen. "no. It can't be. It's too early. the babies won't survive. its only been 5 months. They need at least another month, two would be better." Derek cried, worried for his children. Alex, who had come up as soon as he heard something was wrong, as well as Mark and Christina, took Derek and pulled him out into the hall. "dude, you need to be strong. When Meredith wakes up and sees you freaking out, you know that she will freak out. She needs you to be strong for her sake and for your little girl's sake. While Alex was calming Derek down, the doctors were quickly working on Meredith. When Dr. Johnson figured out what had happened, her heart stopped and she just wanted to cry instead of telling Meredith and Derek. The other doctors continued working, running tests, checking machines. Dr. Johnson decided not to tell Derek until Meredith was awake. They needed to hear this together. - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - -- - - - -- - - - - - A few hours later Meredith slowly opened her eyes. She blinked a few times trying to get her bearings. "i'm in a hospital room?" She thought to herself. But then it all came rushing back to her. The cafeteria. The pain. The pressure. and then she remembered blacking out. She started to sit up, but Derek gently put his hand on her shoulder and helped her lay back down. "what happened. the babies..are they okay?" Meredith asked. She could tell Derek had been crying, even though he was acting tough, Meredith knew it must be something pretty bad. "Dr. Johnson is on her way in and she'll tell us." Derek said weakly., Holding Meredith's hand tightly. Dr. Johnson came in and her heart just ached for the couple. "I wanted to wait until you were together to tell you." Dr. Johnson said slowly. "The pain you were feeling that felt like contractions was actually baby E shifting position. She twisted herself around and is...is stuck between baby C and baby D. with her head stuck behind baby C. " Meredith immediately put her hand on her stomach as if that could somehow fix everything. " her cord is twisted and we don't know how much longer she will be able to get nutrients. She....she's in pretty bad shape I'm afraid. She's so little to start with and now she's in a very bad position." Derek's eyes began watering again but he blinked back his tears, trying to be strong for Meredith. "so what can we do?" Derek asked, feeling hopeless. "well." Dr. Johnson began. This was the hardest part. "You...you have a couple of options. The first one is just to let things play out as they are. You will need to stay on bedrest for at least two weeks no matter which choice you make..." Meredith nodded, right now it didn't seem that important. "so you could just let the pregnancy continue, however I'm afraid as the babies continue to grow there will be no room for baby E and she will....she will not survive. Another option is very risky. We could preform a very very high risk surgery where we would try to move baby E back to her former position and she could develop there. However the surgery is very risky it has been preformed less than a dozen times and only has a ten percent survival rate, for both the fetus and the mother." Meredith's eyes got huge, she couldn't believe that this was happening. Everything seemed to be going so well, and now.... "there is a third option. We....we could go in and induce labor now, give you a C-section and remove baby E. " "would she have a chance?" Derek asked Dr. Johnson shook her head sadly. "I'm afraid not. It....it would be an abortion. You would be terminating the pregnancy." _________________ Dr. Johnson's heart broke for the couple as they both crumpled before her eyes. She left the room to give them some privacy. Meredith's whole body was shaking as she sobbed. Derek was holding Meredith in her hospital bed, his big shoulders trembling as he sobbed into Meredith's hair. "why? why does it always have to happen to me?" Meredith cried. Derek wished he had the answer but he was feeling the same way. Derek struggled to control his tears, knowing they had an important decision to make and he needed to remain strong for Meredith. Derek stroked Meredith's hair, waiting until her sobs turned into tears which then turned into whimpering. "shhhh.." he whispered comfortingly. "how can we do that Derek?" Meredith asked, her big beautiful eyes swimming with tears and pain. "how do we get to choose which babies get to live and which...won't." the tears continued to roll down her face but she was no longer whimpering. Derek blinked several times. He never had felt this kind of pain before. It was the kind that came from knowing that the person you loved and your children, were hurting and there was absolutely nothing he could do to help. "I won't kill her." Meredith said suddenly. Part of Derek felt relieved to know that they wouldn't be killing their baby girl. Little baby E. "Mer, lets think before we make the decision." Derek said. As much as he didn't want to lose one of the quints, he also didn't want to lose Mer. "I want the surgery." meredith said. "Mer." Derek said gently. "Derek, I know. I might not survive. But...but I can't." she paused until she could control her emotions. "I can't just kill one of our babies. I have to do something." Derek's tears began flowing freely once again. "I can't lose you Meredith. I....I can't lose you." Derek held onto Meredith tightly wishing so hard that there was something else they could do. Meredith became eerily silent as she thought things over. She knew that she would have the surgery. She couldn't just sit around and wait for one of her babies to die. She had to do something. "I'll be okay." Meredith said softly. Derek's whole body shook. He couldn't believe that he could very easily loose his love of his life and their five babies. Dr. Johnson knocked and came back in. "I"m so so sorry." She said again, sadly. Meredith and Derek nodded. "I want the surgery." Meredith said Dr. Johnson nodded. "but there is no other option right?" Derek asked. "It's either let the baby die, one way or another...or attempt the surgery?" Dr. Johnson nodded again. "Yes, I'm very sorry. As you know having quintuplets is very high risk, most...most do not all survive. I have to say you are lucky you haven't had any problems up until now. Most mothers lose at least one of the quints in the first three months of pregnancy. " Meredith nodded, she knew how lucky she had been, but now it didn't matter. It would have almost been easier to lose one of the babies at the beginning of the pregnancy when she didn't want them...but now that she wanted them, she couldn't bear to lose one of them. "so how soon can I get the surgery?" Dr. Johnson explained how she was already in contact with some specialist and they were coming in the next day. "You will have to stay on bed rest in the hospital until the surgery, and probably after words too" Meredith nodded she would do everything she could to save the babies. "okay well I will give you some time together then I will come back and explain everything. There is a lot of information you need to know before we do anything." Derek nodded and Dr. Johnson left once again. Meredith just laid there, holding her stomach letting the tears run gently down her face. Derek couldn't stand to see her so broken and unable to help her. He finally gave in and laid next to her, both of them crying freely. Dr. Johnson came back into Meredith's room two hours later with a whole team of doctors following her. After introductions they began the hard and long process of explaining things to Meredith and Derek. It helped that Meredith and Derek were both doctors, so they were familiar with procedures and such, but several things were over their heads. They learned how currently, the babies were all fine except for baby E who was crowded and limited in her nutrients supply. So although they wanted to get the surgery done as soon as possible so baby E can continue to grow and catch up to the others, it was not life threatening. Three specialists were being flown in and would arrive in Seattle in two days. They would spend at least two days working with Meredith and preparing her body for the surgery. Then in approximately five days from now she would have the surgery. Meredith was to remain on bed rest in the hospital until after the surgery. She would be moved into a more private room and although she would still have her blood drawn and tests run on her daily, she wouldn't be on a special diet. They talked for about another hour about general things and how the babies were. Because of the complication, Dr. Johnson believed that the babies could be born much sooner than we were hoping for, therefore Meredith should be doing everything she can to take things easy, but they should also be prepared that they might have the babies before the surgery or right after. They learned more about the surgery, how exactly it would be preformed. Even Derek had to admit it sounded very risky. They would have to carefully remove baby E without damaging the other babies and then place her back inside the womb. They learned how Meredith was even more at risk because she was having the surgery so close to when the babies are due. Most cases have taken place earlier in the pregnancy and the mother has had time to recover before having to go into labor. "I know we've given you a lot of information tonight. I just want to let you know that you can change your minds at any time. We'll leave you alone for the rest of the night, Meredith's new room is ready. We just have to run a few more quick tests and then we'll leave you be." Meredith and Derek nodded, their heads swimming with information before they began settling in for the night. It was the next morning and it felt as if it had been years. By now everyone in the hospital knew about Meredith, so her room was decorated with flowers from practically the whole hospital staff and then chocolates for Derek from all of the nurses. There were balloons and cards and flowers and fruit dishes. Meredith had to admit it was nice. Derek had stayed with her all night and they had brought in a cot for him to sleep on since it would be so long. He already talked with the chief about getting time off, but Meredith convinced him that he should work during the day while she was sleeping, they would be in the same building so he could come if anything was wrong. So Derek agreed to work for a few hours during the day, and be on-call at night since he would be at the hospital anyways. They were somehow slowly getting through this mess. Izzie and Christina had been by 4 times already this morning, helping to make Meredith feel better, and Derek was there of course too. Derek and Meredith were really worried about the babies. They had planned on getting the house and everything ready for them in the next couple of weeks, but now that Meredith was on bed rest until the surgery they won't be able to do that. But Izzie assured them that she had everything under control. She had already gone into the house and set up the cribs. (they had them delivered but hadn't set them up yet) and she put the car seats in the jeep so they would be ready whenever they would need them. She also bought diapers and wipes and other baby essentials that they hadn't bought yet. Meredith couldn't believe that it was so close. She hoped and wished that the babies wouldn't come for at least another month, but she knew that the surgery could speed things up...but if they wanted a good chance to survive, they would need at least another month. Derek kissed Meredith goodbye and went to work as Meredith laid in the hospital bed, thumbing through baby magazines that George had brought for her. The next few days passed quickly. The next thing they knew, Meredith was getting ready to have the surgery tomorrow. Meredith and Derek had already met the doctors that would be preforming the surgery. Dr. Jensen would lead and he would be assisted by Dr. Hurns. They would also have Dr. Johnson and her assistant, Dr. Sanderson in the operating room to help watch the other four babies. The surgery would last at least 3 hours. Meredith and Derek had already filled out all of the paperwork and had had the procedure explained to them several times. There was no other way around it, this was the only possible way to save their baby. Meredith understood the risks and she had to admit it was very risky. When she was alone, which wasn't often because Derek always tried to make sure someone was with her, either him or Izzie or Christina or the Chief or George, Alex, anyone. But when she was alone, she would curl up, put her hands on her stomach and just cry. She would cry for her babies....that they might never be born and that she might never be able to show them how much she loved them. She would cry for Derek....that she would die and he would have to repair himself. She would cry for her....cry that how a year ago she would have paid anyone anything just to be able to die and not have to live anymore, but now just when she really really really wanted to be alive, to enjoy life, to start a new beginning, or five new beginnings, she could very well die. When she was alone she would break down, let her true feelings show. But other than that she was as strong as she could be. She was so proud of herself she couldn't believe she was this strong. She convinced everyone that she would be fine, that she could and would survive this surgery and that her babies would be born on time and healthy. She convinced Derek that she would be fine and their babies would be fine and everything would go on as planned.... they would move into their beautiful new house, have their beautiful healthy babies, and bring them home to raise them and be the best possible parents ever and then sometime in the future when things were less complicated, they would get married.. and live happily ever after. But Meredith knew that none of those things would happen anymore. And so did Derek. But they kept pretending that they would, pretending that they didn't know that the other one knew. They kept pretending that everything would end up perfect like in the movies. Derek had taken the day off to be with Meredith before the surgery. Neither of them could believe that this might be the last day Meredith would be alive. They had closed the curtains and locked the door to Meredith's hospital room so they could have some privacy for a few hours at least until the doctors had to come and take her tests and then prepare her for the surgery. Derek had brought Meredith more flowers which she added to her collection. Derek was glad that the surgery was so soon for Mer's sake, because even though he couldn't bare that he might lose her, he had seen her grimaces and seen the pain in her eyes when she would clutch her stomach because of the babies. Baby E would move, Baby C would kick, any slight movement caused Meredith a great deal of pain, and Derek didn't want her hurting anymore. So they just spent time together. Not really talking about the past and certainly not talking about the future. Just enjoying being able to be with each other for a few hours at least. They had played games, done crosswords, read the paper, normal everyday things that they were always too busy to do. And then finally it began to come to an end. Derek knew they only had another hour or so to spend with each other before the doctors came in and ran their last minute tests and prepped her for surgery that would take place first thing in the morning. So they had to talk about the future. "Meredith. I love you so so much. I...I just want you to know that. That whatever happens, I love you and will continue to love you forever. And...I know that at first I wasn't excited to become a father so suddenly but now there is nothing more i want than to be a father to our children. And..." Derek brushed away his tears before continuing. "and I will love our children so much Meredith. But....but I will always love you" Meredith smiled, kissed away Derek's tears but promised herself she wouldn't shed any more. She was done crying. It didn't help anything. So instead she leaned into Derek, let him wrap his strong arms around her and talked about the babies like everything was going as planned. meredith walked up the stairs of their new house and into the nursery where her five beautiful newborn girls were sleeping. derek was sitting in the rocking chair holding one of them, singing to her softly. Meredith's smile intensified as she watched father and daughter interact. Derek spotted her and smiled, standing up he placed their baby girl back into her crib. "hows mommy doing?" he asked, giving her a kiss. "mommy's good. hows daddy?" Derek just smiled at Mer, as they stood in their nursery surrounded by their five healthy baby girls. Meredith awoke with a start, disappointed once again to find that she was in a hospital room instead of her nursery. She glanced at the small digital clock. It was only 4:30am. She could have slept for another hour, but she knew it was pointless to try. Today was the day. Today was the surgery. She looked at Derek, sleeping on the cot next to her bed. He looked exhausted, his hand resting on the edge of Meredith's bed, his hair tousled and his eyes puffy. Careful not to wake him, Meredith quietly got out of bed. Placing her feet on the cold hospital floor she walked silently over to the door. she grabbed Derek's shirt and slipped it on over her hospital gown and quietly opened the door. The bright lights of the hospital floor momentarily blinded her, but she quickly regained her vision. A million thoughts were going through her mind as she slowly made her way down the hall. It felt good to be out of the room. Her bare feet hardly making any sounds on the carpeted floor. She put one hand on her stomach, letting it slowly find each baby, and pause at each one as she wondered about their future. And hers. She finally got to her destination and quietly opened the door that led into the hospital's nursery. Their were only two nurses on-staff but by now they were used to seeing Meredith. Meredith smiled at them, without saying anything and walked into the room. She stared at the babies, all sleeping soundly for once, and wished so desperately that her babies were among them. She glanced at the regulars, the babies that had been there for a few days. There was baby Skye, whose mother was a fifteen year old girl that wasn't ready for a baby. Then there was baby Nicholas. His parents were in a custody fight for him and he was only born two days ago. There were a few new babies. Ones that were born in the last day or two . Meredith's heart ached when she saw baby twins, both boys, sleeping next to each other. Meredith opened the other door that lead to where the premature babies were kept. The humming of the machines in the intensive care unit almost hid the sounds of babies cries. Meredith looked in the incubators around the room. There were four babies in them. Three of them had been there since Meredith was admitted, the other one was new. Meredith walked up and placed her hand inside the glove leading to the incubator of the new baby. Meredith read the baby's chart. Little Ian Michael. He was born severely prematurely. His mother had slipped in the shower and that had caused her to go into labor. Ian had already had two surgeries and survived both. He had a good chance of making it. Meredith didn't realize she was crying until her tears splashed onto the incubator. Meredith stroked baby Ian's head with one hand as the other was rubbing her stomach. She stayed their for a few more minutes. Looking at all the babies, wishing they were hers. Then she slowly walked back to her room. Quietly opened the door to find Derek in the same position she had left him before slipping back into bed. Her mind raced as she looked at the clock. Her surgery was in three hours. There was a very good chance she only had three more hours to live. Baby C kicked again, causing another burst of pain to erupt in Meredith's stomach. She moaned softly, rubbing her stomach until the pain subsided. She looked at the clock. Two hours and 58 minutes. Rolling over she closed her eyes, she knew sleep was useless to her now, but at least it took her mind off of what the future may or may not bring. The doctors came in at exactly 6:00 and began prepping Meredith for surgery. Derek was standing next to her bed, holding her hand with one hand and stroking her hair with the other. He had never felt this way before. Usually he was the one on the other side of the bed, taking the blood pressure and reading the charts. He wasn't used to feeling like this. Now he knew how his patients felt when they were going into a risky surgery. His stomach felt like it was going to explode, he was so nervous. And his head pounded from the lack of sleep because he was so restless and from the crying. But he knew he needed to be strong for Meredith. She was doing so well with all of this. She hardly ever cried and she seemed to strong. But Derek could tell, when the doctors walked in this morning all of that strength, all of that internal peace with herself just disapeared. She still pretended to be okay and strong, but Derek could tell......it was in her eyes, they no longer glowed instead they were filled with fear and pain. Derek knew she was in a great deal of discomfort, all of the doctors poking and prodding at her. Derek wanted to yell at them to be more careful but he knew they were just doing their jobs. "okay." Dr. Jensen said. "we are all finished, we can take you for surgery whenever your ready." Meredith's eyes got huge as Derek exclaimed "you're done already?" Dr. Jensen nodded softly. Meredith took a deep breath and smiled at Derek. "I"ll be okay." Derek bit through his tears and smiled back at her. "I know." He gave her a kiss, the most intense and passionate kiss they had shared in a long time. When they pulled away, both of them had tears on their faces. Meredith just nodded her head and the doctors began wheeling her to surgery. Derek followed, still holding Meredith's hand. Calmly talking to her, saying everything was going to go smoothly but he wasn't sure who he was trying to convince. "okay." Dr. Hurns said softly. "I'm afraid this is as far as you can go." He spoke gently to Derek, aware of the pain that they must be going through. Derek nodded several times, blinking away the tears. "I'll give you two a moment alone." Dr. Jensen said as they walked down the hall a little. Derek hugged Meredith tightly to him, never wanting to let go and wishing that there was more he could do to help. He gave her another kiss and stood up, but Meredith pulled him back down. "Promise me something Derek Shephard." she said softly. Derek's eyes glistened as he nodded. "anything." Meredith's voice shook as tears gently glided down her face. "promise me.....promise me that if I don't make it...you'll move on. promise me you'll find someone else to love. I....I don't want you to be alone." That was the last straw for Derek, his emotions couldn't take that, the love of his life was so selfless so loving that she was willing to risk her life to save their babies and now...now she gave him permission to love someone else. Derek's tears came flowing down as he embraced Meredith tightly. He could feel her sobbing as she grabbed his shirt, not ever wanting to let go. Dr. Hurns walked up to them and softly said. "I'm sorry but we have to go now." Derek nodded. He gently laid Meredith back down. "do you promise?" Meredith asked weakly. Derek just smiled through his tears. "I promise. but Meredith, you will get through this. And I will love someone else, five little someone elses. " Meredith smiled as she kissed Derek for the last time. "I love you so much." Derek said into her ear. She nodded. "me too." With that Dr. Jensen and his team lead her down the hall and into the operating room while Derek went into his office to cry. _________________ The surgery was going smoothly so far. Dr. Johnson was watching the fetal monitors and the four babies seemed to be doing okay. They had successfully un-tangled baby E from the other babies and were in the process of placing her back in her original spot when suddenly all the monitors started beeping. "chit" Dr. Jensen exclaimed as he and Dr. Hurns quickly began adjusting things and working faster. "she's crashing!" Dr. Johnson said. "baby E's heart rate is dropping!" - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - --- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Derek was sitting in the waiting room, promising himself that if Meredith and the babies made it through this, he would never do a risky surgery again. He didn't know how people did it. The family members of the patients, how could they just sit here and trust them knowing that everything they ever dreamed of, everything they ever wanted, depended on one surgeon? Derek had asked to be notified immediately of any changes but so far Dr. Hurns had only come out once to say everything was going okay. Christina came over to Derek and handed him another cup of coffee. "still no news?" she asked him. He just shook his head. Izzie tried to look on the bright side. "well no news is good news." she said but she couldn't even convince herself. Another hour passed without any updates and now Derek was pacing. "it's been over three hours. The surgery was only supposed to last three hours." Alex and George were waiting with Derek after both girls got paged to the pit. "I'm sure it's going okay." George said "or she's bleeding out and the babies are crashing but they don't want to go and tell you so instead they are pretending nothing has changed just like we do." Alex said "ALEX!" George scolded, hitting him semi-softly on the arm. "Joking." Alex said rubbing the spot where George had hit him. But Derek didn't seem to have heard them, instead he just kept pacing, running his hands through his hair and watching the door where the doctors would come out. Finally after almost 3 in a half hours, the door swung open and Dr. Jensen and Dr. Hurns emerged. Neither of them would make eye contact with Derek. "no." "NO!" Derek yelled, his eyes filling with tears. Dr. Jensen took a deep breath. "There were some complications......" there were some complications...." Dr. Jensen continued. "We were able to successfully untangle baby E and place her back in her original position, but it was more cramped that we thought." Derek looked up confused. "wait, so there still alive?" Dr. Jensen smiled. "oh yes, I'm sorry perhaps I should have started with that, all of the babies are doing well, as is Meredith, she is in recovery and should wake up in about an hour or so." Derek let out a huge sigh of relief. "thank god. so, what's the deal with the complications? baby E is smushed?" Dr. Jensen nodded "yes, we're not sure how long baby E will be able to remain in her current position before one of the other babies pushes her back down....and if that happens, we will be back to square one." Derek nodded, he was still so thrilled that everyone was okay. "so basically we can't do anything about it right? just have Meredith continue to eat right and hope that the babies don't bully baby E back down." Dr. Jensen nodded. "exactly." Derek nodded, anxious to see Meredith. "Can we go see her now?" "sure" Derek practically ran to the recovery wing, pausing only to get specific directions from Dr. Jensen before going into Meredith's room. |

Derek walked into the recovery room where Meredith was still out cold. He knew she would be waking up within the next few minutes, so he set down the flowers he had brought her along with the balloon from Izzie & Christina. He pulled a chair up next to her bed and sat in it, holding her hand. He was so glad she was okay, just watching the rising and falling of her chest. He put his hand on her stomach, feeling for each baby. Meredith's eyes fluttered open. She struggled to get the fogginess out of her eyes and then blinked several times before looking up at Derek. "hi honey." Derek said, a huge smile on his face. "the girls?" Meredith asked, hoping everything went as planned. "they're all fine. All of the babies are fine." Derek said, watching as tears of happiness streamed down Meredith's face. Derek hugged Meredith close, taking in her lavender scent from her hair. He was so glad to have her back in his arms, safe and sound. "so how much longer do I have to stay in the hospital?" Meredith asked and Derek laughed softly. This sounded more like the Meredith he knew. "not long Mer, not long." Then Derek took her back in his arms, never wanting to let her go again. It was the next week and Meredith was finally home from the hospital. The doctors had told her and Derek that there was nothing more she could do before the babies were born that she wasn't already doing. So they decided to let her leave and go home, with the promise that she would only work a few hours a week. Meredith knew how careful she needed to be, with baby E barely back where she belongs. Even when she walked, she did so with great caution so she wouldn't disturb the babies and every time one of them kicked she held her breath, praying that they wouldn't kick baby E. So she arrived back home, Derek had made a big welcome home banner and hung it up for her, and and fresh flowers for her in the house. Walking into the house, Meredith still was in awe. Tonight would only be the fourth night they had slept in the new house, Derek had stayed with her and the hospital every night she was there, so to them the house was still very new. They went up to their bedroom and decided to lay down for a bit, they were both tired. Derek had just gotten done with a 24 hour shift and Meredith had still been recovering. Walking into their master bedroom made Meredith feel like the luckiest person in the world. She never dreamed she would share a house with the man she loved more than anything, much less five children. Part of her wanted to marry him right now, but she was sure it was the hormones talking and she didn't want to rush such an important decision. Meredith laid next to Derek on the bed, who suddenly wasn't tired anymore. Just looking at how beautiful Meredith was laying there made him go crazy. It had been so long since they had had sex. And even now the doctors told her that she couldn't have any until after the babies were born (hopefully in four months but maybe sooner) and still after they were born she would have to wait until she was healed. But Derek couldn't help himself. He gently began kissing her neck, moving up and down by her ear, sending shivers up and down her spine. "derek what are you doing?" she asked, regret in her voice. "i love you Mer" was all he said as he began kissing her throat. "derek. you heard the doctor. we can't." Everything in Meredith's mind was screaming yes and for a split second she consisdered just going ahead and doing it, she needed to and wanted it so bad, but she couldn't risk harming the babies. "damn it." Derek said. He hated that this had to be so hard. He wanted her so bad and could tell by the look in her eyes that she wanted him too. "I'm going to go take a cold shower." Derek said standing up. Meredith nodded, her eyes sad that she couldn't please him as she watched him walk into the bathroom. Rolling over she closed her eyes and drifted to sleep. - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - 0- - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - After Derek got out of the shower, he found Meredith sound asleep. He covered her up and went downstairs. He fixed himself a sandwich and was about to turn on the TV when he changed his mind. It had been forever since he had been out, ever since they found out Mer was pregnant, that's all they seemed to do. Doctors appointments and meeting with the builder replaced the late night parties and fun times at Joes. So Derek decided to go and have some fun, it had been forever. So he wrote Meredith a quick note before heading off to Joes. Derek walked into Joes and grabbed his regular seat at the bar. "Dr. Shephard!" Joe said greeting him. "it's been a long time, how are things going? You and Meredith still together?" Derek nodded. "yeah, we're still together." "last time you were here you just found out she was pregnant." Derek nodded again. "yeah, the quints are due in four months." "wow. well congrats, this ones on me." Joe whipped up a drink for Derek who took it great fully and drank it down. Derek ordered another as he looked around the bar. It had been too long. He forgot how much he missed this place, it was like it was a part of him, everyone from the hospital came here to relax after a long shift. Derek spotted Izzie and Alex in the corner, and saw a couple of the nurses playing darts with some interns. Derek quickly began to relax as the stress of being the perfect boyfriend/father began to disappear. Derek was on his third or fourth drink when he saw a dirty blonde walk into the bar. She must be new in town Derek thought since he hadn't seen her before. He admired her body as she walked up to the bar and ordered a shot. Something about her reminded him of Meredith, maybe it was the hair, or the great body, or possibly the drinks talking, but she looked liked Meredith did before she was pregnant. The girl looked over at Derek and flashed a smile before turning away. A couple of songs later the girl came over and sat next to Derek. "hi. I'm Emily." she said smiling at Derek. Derek smiled back. "hi, I'm Derek." Derek turned back to his drink, taking another sip he thought things over. Then since he was lonely and feeling manly he spoke up. "can I buy you a drink." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - -- - - Izzie and Alex were sitting in the corner of Joe's, sipping there drinks and talking after another long shift. "hey is that Derek?" Izzie said suddenly, looking over at the bar. Alex nodded. "yeah, who's with him?" Alex asked, nodding towards the blonde sitting next to him sipping a drink. "well whoever it is, it's not Meredith that's for sure. And why isn't he home with her, she just got back from the hospital today, he should be with her." Izzie said, half angered half worried. Alex nodded in agreement. "I'm sure it's nothing. Derek can handle himself, besides you know how much he loves Meredith, he wouldn't jeopardize that now, not so close to when the babies will be born." Alex said cautiously keeping an eye on Derek. Izzie nodded, turning back to her drink. "You're right, we don't have to babysit him. But still....something about her looks like trouble. I just hope Derek can see it too." _________________ Derek sat next to Emily, talking with her but also thinking about what he was doing. He learned that she was relatively new to the area, she moved here 6 months ago from Idaho. She's a lawyer at the local law firm and is currently single. As Derek listened to her, he tried to sort things out in his mind. He knew he probably shouldn't be doing this, i mean, he is going to have five babies with Meredith. But again, they're not married....... Derek shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts. 'this is crazy.' he thought. 'i love meredith.' 'but then again i thought i loved addison and look what happened.'. Derek couldn't figure anything out so he ordered another beer and drank it, still talking with Emily. He craved female attention, not that Meredith wasn't pleasing him, she was, but it had been so long since he had sex. So long since he went on a date, so long since he felt like a carefree guy. And he missed it. "so. tell me about you." Emily said smiling. Derek couldn't help but be attracted to her beautiful features. Her slim body reminded him of Meredith's before she got pregnant. Her hair resting on her shoulders. Derek focused back on her question. "well, I'm a doctor at the hospital, I'm actually a neurosurgeon." Emily looked impressed. "wow. cool. that sounds like a challenging job." Derek just nodded, the alcohol beginning to take effect. "so. um. do you want to get out of here?" Emily asked almost shyly in such a way that turned Derek on. Going against his better judgment he smiled and agreed as they stood up and paid Joe. "Derek what are you doing?" Joe asked taking the money. "having some fun Joe. You should try it." Derek answered. Joe knew that this was going to be bad but didn't know what to say. "Derek don't be stupid." Joe said, but he had already left. They got out to the parking lot and Derek led Emily to his jeep. Opening the door for her to get in, Emily had other ideas. Coming up to Derek she leaned in, so close that her breasts rested on his chest and gave him a gentle kiss. Just the simple kiss did much more to Derek. The beer completely kicked in by now caused Derek to return the kiss before leading her into the backseat of the jeep. _________________ Izzie and Alex were enjoying there drinks when Izzie glanced back at the bar to check on Derek. "where did he go?" Izzie asked nervously. Alex looked around the room and found Joe pointing towards the door shaking his head. "chit." Alex said quietly. Izzie realized what must have happened and started freaking out. "Alex do you know how hard Meredith has been working on their relationship. Just because she can't have sex doesn't give him permission to f.uck anyone within his grasp." Alex nodded, fuming. He couldn't believe that Derek would do something like this. Standing up, Alex walked to the door, Izzie right behind him. In the parking lot they glanced around looking for Derek's jeep. Izzie felt a little relieved to see that it was still there and he hadn't disappeared with some girl. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- Emily's shirt was now laying on the floor of the jeep, next to Derek's. There kissing intensifying, causing Emily to let out a little moan that Derek took as a 'f.uck me please.'. Emily ran her hands through Derek's hair, just like Mer used to before pulling on his pants. - -- -- - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - Alex and Izzie were right next to the jeep at this point and could see Derek on top of some half naked chick. "f.uck him." Alex said angrily. "there's no f.ucking way he's getting away with this." Before Izzie could stop him, Alex had pulled open the jeep's door and started screaming at Derek. "what the hell do you think you're doing? How could you do this? you sick asshole." Derek and Emily looked up surprised. Emily, sensing trouble quickly grabbed her shirt and held it close to her. Derek got up off of Emily and grabbed his shirt before stepping out of the car. "chit" was the only thing he was thinking. Derek shut the car door, leaving Emily alone in there, before turning to the outraged Alex. "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?" Alex screamed. "how could you do that to her. After all she's been through? HOW COULD YOU? " Alex knew how bad his friend had been hurting with the un-wanted pregnancy and then her surgery and he couldn't believe Derek would just leave her at a time like this. "ASSHOLE" Alex yelled, and despite Izzie's pleading not to, Alex punched Derek as hard as he could in the face. _________________ Derek was so surprised by the punch. He wasn't expecting anything like that. Derek winced in pain as he felt the blood dripping from his nose. Alex was still fuming. "How in the hell could you." Derek, his hand covering his right side of his face, anwsered back. "I didn't think you would have the nerve to hit an attending." To which Alex replied back icily "I didn't think you would have the nerve to f.uck around with someone while Meredith is carrying YOUR babies." Derek didn't say anything else, he knew Alex was right. Alex continued, calmer now. "You know, all of us hated you. After you left Mer for your wife which you failed to mention before hand. All of us, George, Christina, Izzie, even Burke did. We all did. except Meredith. She convinced us that you weren't like all the rest. that you were different. That you were just confused but everything would work out. And we believed her. Guess we were right all along." With that Alex turned and walked back into the bar, leaving Derek and Izzie alone. Izzie couldn't even bring herself to look at Derek. "You are so f.ucking lucky Christina wasn't here. Because if she was you wouldn't be standing right now." Derek nodded slightly. He knew that that was probably true. Izzie was going to say more, but it seemed like it finally clicked and Derek realized what he was doing. "I'm giving you a day. You have a day to tell Meredith. Or I will. and trust me, it will be much better coming from you." Izzie threatened, but she knew that he would tell her. There was no way he could hide the black eye that was already appearing plus the bloody and bruised face. - - - - - - - - - -- -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Meredith woke up a little while later and went downstairs to find Derek. She was disappointed when all she found was a note saying he stopped by Joe's. Mer, You were sleeping too peacefully and I couldn't wake you. I stopped by Joe's for a little bit. Be back soon. Love, Der Meredith didn't know what time he wrote it, but hoped he would be home soon. She thought they would be spending tonight cuddling and catching up on sleep since they didn't have to work the next day. Guess she was wrong. Meredith fixed herself something small to eat before going back upstairs to lay back down. She looked at the clock. 12:16. "guess he's having a good time." she sighed. She knew it was good for him to get out of the house...that she was probably taking up all of his time. But still just a small part of her wished he would have stayed home with her. Meredith tried to sleep for the next two hours but couldn't fall asleep without Derek next to her. This was the first night in her own bed....in their own bed in their new house, since before her surgery and she was looking forward to sharing it with Derek. Finally around 3am she heard Derek come inside. She laid down and closed her eyes, though now she wasn't tired anymore. She pretended to sleep as she heard him come up and quietly change clothes and then go into the bathroom. She heard him rummaging through the medicine cabinet and figured he was getting a head start on beating the hangover. Then he came over and quietly crawled into bed, just giving Mer a soft kiss on her forehead. Mer opened her eyes and smiled at him. "I've missed you. Why were you gone for so----OH MY GOD. DEREK! WHAT HAPPENED?" Meredith asked worried when she saw Derek's black eye and bruised cheek. Derek sighed. He knew it would be a long night. He was hoping she would be sleeping and they could wait until morning, but now he was screwed. "Mer. I. um." "Derek did you get into a fight?" Meredith asked worried, not the least bit tired, she sat up in bed next to him. Derek had an idea. He knew he screwed up but maybe this way he wouldn't get in that much trouble. "are you up for a walk?" he asked her. Meredith knew he was avoiding the question, but she could use a little fresh air, And she would force it out of him then. "sure. The girls seem to be sleeping, finally, so I'm sure we can walk for a bit." Meredith stood up and grabbed one of Derek's jackets to put on over her top, it didn't quite fit because of her bulging belly, but it would have to do." They silently made their way downstairs and out into the blackness of the night. The moon lit up the sky by the water and Derek was so glad that they had built their house here. They began walking slowly on the little path Derek had made before he began to speak........ - - - - - - - - -- -- - -- -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Izzie took Alex home after the fight with Derek. They didn't say much, but they both had a common understanding. They got back to Mer's old house and quietly went in, knowing George was probably sleeping. Alex went to take a shower while Izzie crawled into bed. Just as she was drifting to sleep it dawned on her. She told Derek he had to tell Meredith in the next 24 hours about the fight. But Meredith was having an extremely high risk pregnancy and they weren't supposed to do anything to cause her stress or baby E could move again and she could go into labor. chit. Izzie sat up quickly and grabbed the phone, without even thinking she dialed the number to their new house, not caring if it woke them up she just didn't want the babies to be born tomorrow morning. It rang and rang but nobody answered. She decided not to leave a message and instead tried Derek's cell phone. She knew he always had it with him in case the hospital called, but again no one anwsered. A sinking feeling entered Izzie's stomach as she realized he must be telling her sooner rather than later. _________________ |

Derek took a second to collect his thoughts. After the fight with Alex he drove over to the ferryboats and just parked, taking some time to think things over. He ended up staying there for over an hour, just crying and thinking things through. Then he finally mustered up the courage to go home and talk with Meredith. He knew he needed to. They stopped on the path, overlooking the beautiful scenery. "Meredith. I...I really screwed up." Derek said. He decided to get right to the point. Meredith shivered despite the warm weather. She didn't like the sound of this. "Meredith. I...I need to tell you this, but I want to get it all out before you talk okay?" Meredith nodded, her stomach churning as she sensed that something was very wrong. Derek motioned to the little bench by the path and Meredith sat down, but Derek remained upright and began pacing. "When you were sleeping...I. I wanted to go out. I wanted some fresh air. or something. so i went to Joe's. You know it had just been so long since we'd been out. We've just been consumed with the babies and everything I needed a break. And Meredith." Derek paused as he blinked back the tears. "Meredith I got selfish. I only thought about me. I didn't think about everything you had been through. I didn't think about how much you needed and deserved a night out. I didn't think about how you needed someone to talk to. I just thought about me. " "And...at Joes...I got to drinking and. and there was this girl." Meredith looked up, her eyes begging Derek not to say what she knew was coming. Derek couldn't look at her, he couldn't stand to see her fear and pain and know it was all because of him. "there was this girl and and alcohol. And Mer, I was just feeling so lonely and needed something. and....and we went into the car and..and. we kissed. and..and. Alex was there. He saw us. He came over and let me have it. He said a lot of things Meredith. You should know...You should know he's a wonderful friend. He said a lot of things Mer that were very true. A lot of things about how wonderful you were and how shitty I was. I am. And he punched me, and Mer I deserved it, I really did. And that the story. But Mer I am so incredibly sorry. I love you Mer I really do and i don't know what came over me. I'm sorry." Derek looked up at Mer, waiting for the screaming and the anger. But what he got was worse. Way worse. he got tears. Meredith couldn't look at him. How could he do this to her, to them. They had been through so much, how could he do that? Didn't she mean anything to him? didn't their children mean anything to him?. The tears were flowing but she felt surprisingly calm. Sure she was hurt and angry but she knew she had to be strong for the girls. "how could you derek?" she asked, her voice broken. "I'm sorry. I really am.I love you so much Mer and I-" Meredith broke him off. She spoke quietly, her voice soft but surprisingly strong. "don't. " Derek looked up surprised at the power he heard in her voice. "don't" she continued. "pretend to be there for me. don't pretend to be in this relationship if you're not going to work for us. For our babies. I should have known from the start. I should have know this was too much to ask. But Derek, I've had enough. I should have known you would cheat again after learning about Addison. But I was naive. But not anymore. I'm done. I'm done pretending to be okay. Just go. and don't come back expecting to have a relationship with our daughters. You've broken me, but I won't let you break them." Meredith stood up to go back to the house, tears blurring her vision. But Derek gently grabbed her arm. "Our daughters need their dad. You should know that better than anyone." |

"Our daughters need their dad. You should know that better than anyone." Derek let Meredith think about that as he let go of her wrist and began walking back towards the house, leaving her alone with the scenery. Meredith blinked through her tears, thinking about everything he had said. She knew he was right about that, that their girls would need their daddy. But how could he do this to her? again?. Meredith put her hands on her big stomach, as if she could somehow protect her babies from the pain she was experiencing. She thought about everything her and Derek had finally made together. Besides the fact that they were expecting five baby girls in the next four months, they had also just built a beautiful expensive new home. Was she really willing to give all of that up because of one night? She knew Derek was sorry, she could tell by his voice and the way he looked at her. She sighed, knowing she would give him another chance. She had to. Because she still loved him no matter what he would do to her she knew she would always love him. That was her weakness. He was her weakness. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - Derek walked back to the house, tears running down his face. He knew he had blown it. Everything they had worked for, everything they had finally gotten, would disappear overnight. He loved Meredith so much, he couldn't believe he had blown it over some stupid girl. He knew he had to make it up to her. He just didn't know how yet. |

"hurry up Mer, open the last one!" Izzie said smiling. It was a week later and Meredith's surprise baby shower. Her and Derek had made up, they knew that neither of them could go through this alone so they needed to be strong and go through things together. After numerous talks involving tears and laughter, several deliveries of flowers, and a couple of dinner dates, things were completely back to normal. Both of them were excited for the babies to come but were also nervous knowing that each day brought them closer to the delivery day that was still 4 months away. Meredith was sitting next to Derek, both of them wearing huge smiles. They were in the nursery in the new house, surrounded by all of their friends. They had already opened tons of gifts, and the nursery was filled with presents. Highchairs, bottles, diapers, and onzies were scattered throughout the room. There was one present left, this one was from Christina, Izzie, Alex and George. All of the interns that were finally no longer interns. Meredith opened the present and tears came to her eyes. It was such a simple present, but it was so sweet and thoughtful. Inside the bag were five long stemmed roses. And each one had a ribbon around it that said baby A. made with love by Meredith and Derek Derek smiled as he held two of the roses, baby C and baby D's. He could picture himself holding his baby girls in his arms like he was holding their flowers. "okay okay, the parents to be are late again for their doctors appointment. " Izzie declared laughing. Izzie had planned this beautiful baby shower only to find out Meredith had scheduled a doctors appointment for that afternoon. Everyone laughed as they helped picked things up and then after saying goodbye, left Meredith and Derek alone. "we should go." Derek said gently. Meredith nodded as she looked around the beautiful nursery. It was decorated with white trim and yellow walls, but today tons of pink surrounded the room from the baby shower. Meredith set the beautiful roses in a vase on their way out the door, as they rushed to the hospital for their big appointment. |

They arrived at their appointment fashionably late... They hurried inside to find Dr. Johnson and a few other doctors in the room. "sorry we're late." Meredith said apologizing. "my friends threw me a surprise baby shower." Dr. Johnson smiled. "I understand. well, lets get started." After checking on the babies, Dr. Johnson was please to say the girls seemed to be doing fine. Baby E was still a little too low than they would like, but wasn't in any danger. Dr. Johnson said that although she wasn't due for four more months, she was afraid the girls might decide to make their appearance early. "you know, quintuplets are hardly ever carried full term. You would be lucky to last another month." hearing those words caused Meredith and Derek to slightly panic. Just the thought that they would be responsible for five newborn babies in a month was terrifying. "the babies are still very small, and although they are developing fine I am worried that they would be at risk if they are born in the next month in a half. Especially baby E. She is still very small and I'm not sure if she would make it, so just make sure you are being careful and taking it easy." Meredith nodded, although hearing this was scary, knowing that her babies might die before they even have a chance to live, Meredith was semi-used to it by now. They knew from day one that it wouldn't be easy, that there was a good chance that they wouldn't be bringing home five babies. "okay, are you ready for the tour." Derek and Meredith nodded happily. Since it was getting closer to the due date, Dr. Johnson decided to take time during this appointment to show Meredith and Derek how things would happen when Meredith went into labor since it would be very chaotic when it was actually happening. Although Meredith and Derek had been working in Seattle Grace for several years, they weren't very familiar with the maternity wing. They were being given extremely special treatment, not only because Meredith and Derek worked for the hospital, but because they were expecting quintuplets, and they would be the only quintuplets born in the Seattle area. Several Press people have tried to set up interviews with Meredith and Derek, but they had declined, wishing to keep their babies their own business. So specific rooms were already set up for them in case she went into labor early. They were in a very secluded area of the floor, to keep away press and other unwanted visitors. Derek held Meredith's hand as they were shown around. It was nice to walk through it, it made them feel a little more prepared for what was to come and it gave them a better idea of what to expect. Meredith and Derek were extremely please to find that all five babies would be sharing one room. They would be in one of the biggest rooms, that was actually a old OR before they remodeled it, so it was the size of about three normal hospital rooms, maybe more. It was already set up with five tiny cribs and then five incubators. Each one had a sign on it "baby A, baby B, etc." and in one of the corners was a bed where Meredith would be able to stay when she was recovered. The room was nice, it didn't feel like a hospital room. It had a tiny couch for Derek, a bed for Meredith, but it was slightly bigger than most hospital beds, room for Derek if they were close. There was a rocking chair in the other corner, and a small shelf where there were diapers and onezies. Meredith and Derek were both extremely pleased with the room. They knew they would most likely be spending lots of time there, so they were glad that all of the babies would be together. Next they were led into another room, and this one caused Meredith and Derek to worry. "now, the room where we just were, thats where the babies will be able to stay if they are....if they are healthy. but um. well as you know there will most likely be complications, so they will probaly have to spend a few days in the ICU. We have set up a special area of the ICU just for the quints. Now like the other room, only authorized staff members and visitors approved by you will be allowed in, but the ICU is also stricter. When-if, the babies are in the ICU, only immediate family members will be allowed in. Meredith and Derek nodded, hearing them, but still shocked by what they were seeing. Five incubators with machines and tubes and monitors coming out all over the place. Just thinking that their babies will have to be in here caused Meredith and Derek pain. They knew that the ICU was hard because of the serious conditions of the patients, but now they would be experiencing that first hand. They were shown each of the incubators and the equipment was briefly explained. By each of the incubators was a machine to help with feeding, heart monitors to watch the babies heart rates, machines to help them keep their temperature up, the list went on and on. Finally they were able to move on to the OR, much to Meredith's dismay. She had to admit she was terrified of giving birth. "You will most likely be brought in before your due date as you are well aware, things will be very hectic, so I will try to explain everything now. " Dr. Johnson began. "you will be brought in here and after quickly checking on the babies we will deliver them via c-section......" Dr. Johnson continued but Meredith had tuned her out. For the first time it seemed to really hit home that they would be parents to five little babies very shortly. And they were so unprepared. |
