I just want to make a few, what I feel are common sense, points. Have you ever had to go to the hospital? Outpatient surgery, the ER, simple tests and/or x-rays? To say that having a cell phone is less than the cost of an emergency is just plain ignorant. 36 hours in a hospital will cost well over $40,000 (take that and do the math for a couple hours or one hour (yea, right, good luck getting out of a hospital in an hour)) not including any procedures done. If you have health insurance you will be very lucky to only have to pay ~$500, expect your co-pay to be much higher unless you have an excellent plan. A ride in an ambulance will cost you at least $500 as well, even if it's a volunteer rescue squad. My cell phone bill is about $350 a year, and there are FAR more plans out there for much cheaper (pay as you go, as mentioned). If I'm in a car accident (I live in a rural area) or bike accident (I BMX deep in the woods) and no one else is around, that $350 a year is worth MY LIFE - assuming the phone doesn't get ruined in the crash, which is why I keep mine in my left chest pocket or left pant pocket. By the way, and I'm getting further technical here (why not at this point), a cell phone is not an investment. If it were, your money would be working to generate you more money. Bills are not increasing your personal wealth. Also, did you know you might qualify to receive a free cell phone from the Federal government (if you're American)? I think it's fucking bullshit to the max, but yes there is a government program which people can get cell phones. Sure, they're monitoring you - it's the Feds!; but it could save your life. We're already paying taxes for the program, might as well get your free handout from the government!!!! Yet another waste of my goddamn tax money (fuck that program and fuck gov't health insurance!!!!!)
