Jake has returned to Vigil's care because of a relationship breakdown.

His previous owner described him like this:

"Jake is a great dog. He is very loyal and obedient. He likes human company. He is very good with other dogs especially when off the lead out walking.
He has very good recall. His favourite toy is tennis balls, but he doesn't like squeeky toys. He loves to swim and ride in cars.
He is not too happy when going to the vets.
He doesn't like people approaching when on the lead, but is happy to say hello in his own time.
Unfortunately he is not good with children in a close environment, although in time that may change.
Jake loves to be outdoors most of the time but still likes the comfort of indoors and company. He likes to be groomed and stroked but he will let you know when he has had enough."

After his previous owner had left the kennels he was understandably quite stressed. He didn't seem very approachable, but at last I found the key to getting to know him was to show him a lead. After that he was quick to make friends with all the people he met.

I was down at the kennels today and spent some time with Jake. Over the past couple of weeks, he has become increasingly stressed by kennel life and it has been getting more and more difficult returning him to his kennel at the end of the afternoon.

Today he wasn't going to fall for any of our ruses to get him into his kennel. Last Saturday I conned him into getitng into an airline crate in my car, then we carried the crate into his kennel.

So I brought him home with me! Jake is now staying with Liz and me. We started off by keeping hm seperated but I took the plunge and he is now mixing happily with Pharoh, Sophie and Magic.

Away from kennels he seems a lot more relaxed and easy-going. I've had to correct him for snapping at Magic and he takes it without any malice. He's a lovely boy, but you have to be firm with him.

Mike - i can't tell you how happy i am to see Jake with you :worthy: It has truly made my day :thumbs up:

He was obviously so distressed by being in kennels - i'm so glad he's being given the opportunity to be assessed in a proper home environment :thumbs up:

Do keep us posted. :thumbs up:

Jake has settled in very well and is a very gentelmanly chap.

I am not sure the pictures show quite how big he is as he is bigger than Pharoh.

He thoroughly enjoyed Sundays Biggsd walk and was off lead and perfectly behaved. (If a little vocal while on the lead in the pub, but with horses, cars, people, other dogs and children going past not entirely suprising.)

Yesterday was the first time I took him out on my own so I took him round the roads to our local recreation ground.
He was as good as gold,
keen to start off but after a minute settled and walked nicely and sat when asked before we crossed roads.

I kept him on lead at the rec as there were kids playing football and a couple of dogs in the distance but he was happy sniffing about, tail wagging enjoying himself.
When we went onto the other field it was empty so I let him off lead. He stayed within 50 yards investigating the hedge and going a bit further to chase off an annoying crow . When another dog came along I put him on lead and he was just looking at the dog and the people wagging his tail.
We walked back passing a couple of ladies on the street and walking under the railway bridge with traffic coming towards us, all without incident.
Finally we saw a cat, which slowly walked out of the road, but, although he was interested he didn't lunge towards it just increased his speed and watched it until we went passed.

We have had a couple of incidents of him growling at my 11 year old Ellie, both of them were when he was at the top of the stairs and she wanted to go up. He responds very well to being told no and is quite happy to move out of the way.

He did walk all the way round the table yesterday when Sophie (who was lying between him and the door) gave him a very low level growl so he knows his place. :lmoa:
He tells Magic off when he is getting a bit much and he seems relaxed with Pharoh as Pharoh does with him.

He is a vey handsome, relaxed gent.
