crossposted with permission I know this is a lot to ask, but maybe one of you may be able to help German Shepherd, Raz. Raz, was one of 20+ dogs seized from an illegal breeder in Thundersley, Essex, in August. Raz was used as a stud. His life consisted of being locked in a derelict shed, and when he was let out, he was left to be repeatedly attacked by untame dogs, (one of which had already killed 2 small dogs and killed another German Shepherd by actually breaking its back). His injuries are many, with obvious bite wounds all over his body, punctures across his back, in the top of his skull and eye, his fur is so matted i doubt he's ever been groomed. The council, RSPCA etc were all involved in the seize, and the majority of the dogs (of varying breeds) have been rehomed via the kennels the RSPCA/council pays for locally. However, Raz is not ready for a home yet. He is very frightened and panics alot, and the world outside his kennel is a very scarey place. One good piece of luck for Raz though, is that another local kennel owner and experienced behaviourist/trainer has taken Raz into her kennels to help him back to health in body and mind. More than anything Raz desperatley needs to learn to trust again, and with help from Gill and a couple of volunteers he is making slow progress. But as German Shepherd lovers will know, they can often develop very strong bonds with an individual, and they do not want him to become overly attached to them, as ultimately he will hopefully be rehomed. If you, or someone you know, might be able to help Raz, and offer him a forever home where he can learn to trust, experience love, play and human companionship please get in touch. Ideally whoever commits to Raz will need to come to the kennels regularly to build a bond and gain his trust whilst he is in a familiar environment, before taking him home. Although his wounds are healing, he is still very nervous. Despite his tortured life he has never shown any agression. Today he made eye contact a few times, which was wonderful, he was also beginning to use his nose and have a sniff about. The RSPCA often place dogs in Gills care, and for her time and kennel space, vet bills and feed she does not get a penny. So even if you're not able to help Raz find a new home, if you feel you would like to donate something towards his rehabilitation it would be very very welcome, be it for some food, or treats or his medicine. Or even coming down to spend time with him, the more kind people he experiences the better. Thanks for reading, i know it's long! Here are the local paper articles. http://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/local_news/4557930.Dogs_taken_from_illegal_breeder_following_ probe/ http://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/4571...vous_dog_Raz_/ Raz is at Crofters Kennels, Beke Hall Chase South, Rayleigh Essex. I don't want to think about the suffering those poor dogs have endured - the breeder should be banged up big time (or more deservedly, euthanised painfully). Poor Raz - would love to visit him but Essex is too far for me to travel. I am sure that once his wounds have healed and with lots of TLC, he will realise that us 2 legged souls are not all bad. for you.

UPDATE Raz has been offered a home by a family who are willing to work at his pace! They are going to build an outdoor kennel and run for him, and introduce him into the home slowly. Three GSDs were seized. One has gone home with the RSPCA lady and one was sent to another kennels and they`re not coping well so Gill is going to take him in and work at getting him rehabilitated now. There are huge vets bills to pay, so any donation would be welcome - call Gill as above or donate via BigGSD`s paypal button, marking it EssexGSDs please/ thanks to all |

For whoever has Raz I can say that he is one wonderful boy. We have taken our GSD & our lab x to help him get used to other dogs & people. Raz loves the Lab; Toby, followed him everywhere. No aggression whatsoever & considering his past shows what kind of super boy he is. Taking him out again tomorrow & looking forward to it. If had space would have given him a home myself but been told NO! by the woman of the house Raz is a lovely boy who deserves a second chance. He'll give lots of love in return

Took the boy for nice long walk today. He's made so much improvement already. Very dog friendly, slower towards people but he settles down with time & patience. No aggression towards people just wary of them, but again this is due to that nasty breeder who should be PTS! Gill & the team are doing wonders with him & am sure he'll get there in the end, but his new owners will need to have patience & care. Lovelly boy. When all better with his new coat will be one big Teddy Bear. In answer to his age Gill thinks he's about 4yrs but thats a rough guess. Lovelly gentle bear that will warm your heart |

![]() Hello, just thought I'd post a picture of Raz, taken on Saturday, as you can see, in comparison to the picture in the newspaper article he is looking much brighter and more interested in his surroundings. His wounds are improving greatly. He is learning to trust again, and is moving forwards all the time, slowly but surely. I have been visiting him and taking him for walks and it is lovely that he can manage to walk with the lead loose for the majority of his walks now, rather than pulling as far away from the handler as possible and circling around as he did when he first arrived. Many thanks to those who have contributed towards his care, it is much needed and very very greatly appreciated. |

Raz is still at crofters. Did go to his new home but had problems so came back. The home he went to didn't have any other dogs & as Raz likes to be in a pack, he got scared, hid in the corner so Gill had to go get him back. I went took him out again yesterday With Toby & Pippa. They all bestest pals, eagerly sniffing each other. Had nice walk & at end sat in field. Toby & Pippa layed down & after while Raz layed down by my feet. He made so much improvement in such short time but still more confidence to gain. Raz can be easily stroked which couple weeks ago he'd flinch & pull away. Obviously learning that not all humans are nasty. I love the fluff ball & am sure he'll make a great family pet. Do think another dog will help him though. Have taken some pictures which will be loaded for you all to see, but the woman (brains) of the house hold will need to do it as I've only just learnt to type with one finger. What can I say, I'm a bloke. lets hear it for Raz, the big black fur ball

I wish I could take him but I have a big nervous GSP who might object to him. We`re having a raffle soon to donate towards his keep. Let me know if there is any way we can help please. We`re local (Southend). Would a visit help? |

On behalf of Gill & Co, many thanks Deanna, your donation is really appreciated. Raz is continuing to improve, today he was brave enough to be walked up to a group of about 7 people and 3 dogs who were chatting after their training class. The atmosphere was relaxed, and there was no pressure on him and he chose to come and investigate the other dogs, and did not shy away from the humans! He even leant his body against his handler for a few moments! Well done Raz!! |
