I have been looking at the Oldies Club (click on link above) and on looking at just 2 categories found 11 full older GSD's needing retirement homes That is without all the GSD x's. I have been looking after a friends 14 year old dog for 6 weeks now. I personally have never had a dog live to this age, (13 was my oldest) and I have loved it. The oldies are so precious, so deserving of being spoiled in their twilight years. He has had fresh chicken every day, but no wastage, chicken fat, jelly, skins... everything has gone in (I waste nuffink!) it has been a pleasure to look after him and spoil him wrotten. What a little character. If you are looking at the board thinking about adopting but maybe cannot cope with a bouncy youngster, please think about adopting an older sweetheart They are so deserving of nothing but the best in their twighlight years. xxx The Oldies club link is on the heading.

What took you so long?! There's nothing quite like an older dog - and an older shep is just magical. Who needs norty pups and stroppy teenagers when you can have a mature, experienced dog who has seen it all and demands little more than love and companionship. You lot can keep your youngsters thank you - over 8's only for us - although for preference we like 10+ most ![]() I saw this little darling on the oldies site - she's good with kids, cats and other dogs, is calm, housetrained, has her vax, spayed, microchipped etc etc. She probably makes a nice cup of tea as well. I can't think of a single reason NOT to have her (other than than a lack of space at the inn )![]() beautiful Huggy Bear |

These 'Oldies' bring so much joy to our lives. Zoro is a brilliant example. He and other Oldies are so devoted to you and the wider family as soon as their paws are under the table. Most people that I homecheck want a dog under 3 yrs old. They say that if it is older then they don't want the heartbreak of not having the dog for long. But there is nothing more worthwhile than giving them a happy and loved retirement.......and they are soooooo very grateful in return. As Ron says, if there is any way in pushing the plight and benefits of taking an 'Oldie' please let us find a way to do this. BTW Zoro sends his love to all his old chums in Chertsey and thanks John for looking after him and finding him a home here with Elsa his bossy big sister who absolutely adores him! Bev |

Talking to the converted with me, my first puppy was 13 when she went to the bridge and she'd been with me since she was 8 weeks old. Number 2 Oldie was 12 when he came home and was just so bloody wonderful and number 3 Oldie was with me for 6 months - they've been there, done that and worn the Tshirt. All they want is a full belly, much cuddleing and a comfy bed. A walk is a bonus, but not if its cold or raining - the fire is far more inviting. I love the Oldies

It is so hard to change perceptions. I met an older near-neighbour today who was devastated at losing their 6 year old golden retriever earlier this week. The dog Barney was greeting Elsa & Zoro on their evening stroll in the field opposite us on Monday evening. The Vet was called to the house as Barney had been sick twice on Tuesday. By Wednesday he was in theatre and had advanced kidney cancer and two huge tumours elsewhere. There were no other apparent symptoms leading up to his sad demise. The owner and his wife are a lovely couple in their early 70's and both walk with the aid of a stick. They have already contacted the golden retriever rescue to get another one. The man said that the oldest age they would consider taking was 4 as otherwise 'the dog would be set in his ways'. I spent ten minutes talking about the advantages of older dogs pointing to Zoro who was with me. Zoro has made a real hit with all the local dogs and their owners. Dogs soon adapt whatever their age to your routine. Clearly, an older dog would be more suited to this couple and yet, at the moment, they won't consider it. It's such a shame as there are so many Oldies in desperate need and only the fortunate few in relative terms find retirement homes. |
