Midnight the Knebworth Stray...Caught!

This is the poor dog that has been straying for months in the Knebworth (Herts) area. I've established a feeding routine with the help of a wonderful local resident and eventually got close enough to get some photo's (after weeks of staying up to unearthly hours). The dog is very timid, terrified of people and loud noises. Its either a small male gsd or a female, long coat...particularly long around the rear end.

The pictures are not great...they were taken at almost midnight with only 1 street lamp nearby, but i'm hoping someone will look at these pictures and recognise the markings.
The dog has a very distinctive black saddle marking on his back. Please if you know anyone who has lost a gsd ask then to look at these photo's. I have also updated the doglost site . This baby is someone's pet...they need to be off the streets and safe before the winter sets in.

I will be trying to take some better pictures tomorrow night & then will get posters made up. In the next few weeks I will set a date with the dog warden to sedate this baby..I will need as much help as possible on this night. The area is surrounded by fields which the dog lives in, once sedated we need the help of a group of volunteers to walk through the fields with us and find it...we will only have a set time before it arouses from sleep. If anyone lives in the Herts area and is willing to give up an evening to catch the dog please contact me.

Well done on managing to get the pics Hon!
Only possible because im now scatter feeding it...see all the sausage bits on the ground..lucky dog lol

Tan thats a good idea, the only problem is that its about 40 min drive from Pats..I can bring my car (7 seater & take 6 people)..if anyone else also wants to drive i'll cover their petrol costs. The dog will be going to Pats anyway when caught as the dog warden has agreed it can do its 7 days there..so would be handy.

I'll speak to Pat and see what her thoughts are x

Hi Helen, good to see the pics of this baby at long last. I am on holiday from 13th august until 29th, but available anytime you need me after then, or even before then, all you gotta do is yell honey, you got my numbers. I can bring my three kids with me, youngest is 16 so no probs there, on the night of sedation.
And one of these days we will get on another walk. lol
See you soon

Well done!!! I checked that thread on doglost only this afternoon before the update.

But can I advise caution, our experience with ACP and Sheps is that it does not work if they are stressed, adrenaline will override the sedation every time and it will be difficult to get the dose right by scatter feeding.

Could you not set up a large dog trap instead?

Hope you dont mind me butting in.

I think I will be coming to Pats (provided a few things dont go wrong at the same time and everyone doesnt hate me after Doglistener took my personal message to him and turned it into an offensive message) and as you know I will then be in WGC so if it happens that weekend pls tell me.

Wilma thank you  you're a star

Dave ..thank you for your comment, i'm open to all suggestions, so please feel free to post up anything which may help.

I did consider a trap, but the dog is terrified and very wise to any changes in the area. If the storage cupboard door is left open the dog won't come and eat, after long discussions with the dog warden, we decided the least intrusive method was sedation..if that doesn't work then we'll try the trap. Tbh I don't believe it will enter a trap anyway..it seems to be getting food from all different places. I even followed it one evening and saw it eating biscuits from a bird feeder. My worry is that if it gets a fright from the trap (without being caught in it) it may not return to the feeding area we have established.

The dog has a good routine with us, he will go straight to his feeding bowl eat the food we put in, then he goes back into the field and waits about 15 min..then he starts barking and comes back to eat the cut up sausages. The reason I started scatter feeding along with his normal meal, is so that when we sedate him, we can keep him in the area for as long as possible to give the sedatives a chance to kick in and also to get him close enough to me to take the pictures.

He/she is relatively calm around me and the local resident who has been helping with the feeding. As long as the sedatives are administered in his food following the routine we use and with all people out of sight he should be okay. Bear in mind he only comes out late at night..so its very quiet in that area.

Karen thank you :group hug:

I can see your problem but if ACP is going to work then the dog needs time to quietly go to sleep and even when asleep it may awaken into a frenzied monster as soon as its touched so do be careful. ACP in food takes an hour to work so the dog will have plenty of time to walk off and hide.

There may be other drugs but I think most need to be injected and it might be worth talking to a wildlife rescue. The place I helped at years ago used to take injured deer with a blowpipe firing a regular hypodermic but how they did it or what drug I dont know.

That's an idea Dave. A tranq could be shot out of an upstairs window and if it works it would work within minutes.

if anyone's coming from the portsmouth area who could give me a lift,i'd be glad to come and help.

dave's right about the acp. it is very unpredictable, as they are still aware of what is going on. and it can make some dogs worse. valium would be better, as it takes away the fear. that would take about an hour or so to work too, but at least it's in tablet form you could put in the food. i'm sure your vet would let you have some under the circumstances.

unless there's a new drug out, i think you'll find most people use immobilon in a dart gun/blowpipe. it's extremely lethal to humans and an antedote has to be ready every time. a license is needed for both the drug and the dartgun. i would think the law would be pretty strict on their use in a public place too, even at night.

and i know from helping at a deer farm of one the clients where i worked, that it's not as easy as it looks either.

if you think darting would be best, as well as the wildlife park, what about asking the police/rspca?.. they must have someone they use if an animal should get onto a road, for istance.

I dont think the authorities will be any help, the current Police option to immobilise is a Tazer which works well on dogs apparently and the RSPCA are too keen to use lethal force as in the "rescue" of the sheep trapped on a Yorkshire cliff which I am told they just shot.

It sounds as though great progress has been made to befriend the dog and I would say stick at it and one day it will relax (I hope) "softly softly catchee monkey" as they say.
