Rocky (formerly Tommy) was a private rescue GSD at about 1 yr old from Norwich, where he belonged to an elderly man who got local youths to take him for a walk, the youths ill treated him. When the gentleman was hospitalised Tommy was passed to his present owners who had just lost their Shepherd - Rocky one.

He has been with this local couple about 7 or so years and he is house trained, happy, lively, affectionate and loyal. Rocky is used to the freedom of a large garden, and though he originally lived in the house, he now sleeps in a brick outhouse where he seems quite happy.

He's good with other dogs when out on walks but has not lived with one, he hates cats. He "kicks off" at reflective jackets or uniforms. He's not a fussy eater, he's clean and easy to live with. He is vaccinated but not castrated yet, he's not been mated and looks as though he's 100% pure GSD.

He's more a lady's dog than a man's and be quite protective of his mum, but still obeys dad (most of the time) although off the lead he can be a bit headstrong and dash off after rabbits, but he does come back! He's been fine with visiting children around but has never lived with kids, and as long as he is shown that visitors are "friends" he's not at all aggressive.

His owners have been dealing with a serious illness and have decided to downsize and live abroad. This is also the reason that he is living outside, long hospital visits being easier that way, Rocky is not at all at fault.

We have perhaps 6 weeks to find Rocky a new home or a local foster home before we have to take him in here, he has never been in kennels.

Rocky went to our vets today to be castrated, unfortunately the owners were not as open about his history as they should have been to us or to the vet when they dropped him off. He hasnt been seen by the vet since 2007 so his records were archived and only came to light later.

In 2007 Rocky was prescribed painkillers for a severe hip problem which must only be ongoing, it was noted then that he was hard to handle, hence no vax or x rays or other visits since.

When the nurse tried to weigh him he swung around and snapped and when they tried to inject the premed he bit her resulting in a trip to casualty. It seems that his back end was very painful and the vets recommendation was that he should not be re-homed given that he was VERY aggressive in their kennel without the owner present and had a severe hip problem. His recommendation PTS.

The owner was called and just signed the consent form and left.

We feel that the only people who could help Rocky for the time that he had left were his owners whom he knew and trusted, we did not feel that we could help him, not to mention the problem of actually getting him out of the vets kennel!!!! Had we done so we have no space suitable for him today anyway.

The vets have spent all day feeding him sedative which is not working because he is so wound up. The hope is that eventually he will calm down so that they can get him out on a pole to inject him in safety.

What a way for a devoted member of the family to spend his last day on earth, sorry Rocky you did not deserve this.

Could this be moved to Rainbow bridge please.

Lets hope this serves as a warning to all those who seek to hide the truth about large powerful dogs.

.We should have gone in and done our own assessment first, we should have insisted on seeing his records up front. We must learn from this and make sure we dont get caught out again.............
