This is posted here with the permission and support of PFK - thank you Dave and Rachel.

Shane is a long haired German Shepherd Dog of about 10 years old. I rescued him at Christmastime from a pound where he was on the vet's table about to be put to sleep. I made the decision to bring him to my home in order to save his life and prayed that my landlord would understand. Despite pleading with him, my landlord has decided that my own two dogs are enough in the house and thus I am unable to keep Shane so with a very heavy heart I am seeking a perfect home for him.

Shane is INCREDIBLY gentle and well behaved. He knows his commands and is no trouble whatsoever in the home. His loyalty and affection are second to none. Sadly he is semi blind and although he copes admirably with this will need a fairly quiet household as a result. He is perfect with other dogs, children and cats but due to his age it is unfair to place him with young children although I would consider older children or visiting grandchildren. He will need someone at home with him for much of the day as although he is angelic when left, he just doesn't deserve to be. Perhaps an older owner or older couple might fit the bill? Shane's a bit arthritic on his back legs and will need daily anti-inflammatories for this - he loves his walks but is content not to go too far.

I am a network rescue volunteer acting with the support of Poplar Farm Kennels near Ely, and so Shane will be rehomed under a rescue agreement. Applicants must be willing to be homechecked and to return Shane to us if for any reason they cannot keep him and please - SERIOUS ENQUIRIES ONLY - this is breaking my heart as it is. We would prefer for this reason for Shane's new home to be in Cambridgeshire or the surrounding area but will certainly consider others if they are right for Shane.

In the first instance I shall send any interested parties a potential adoptors form to complete and return to me by email and then we can take it from there. This might seem terribly formal but will be a little easier on my heart. I want someone very special for Shane, but what I want is NOTHING compared to what this remarkable, extra special dog deserves.

Can I add that I have met this dog and the first post is completely truthful and not exaggerated in any way.

I would also add that if a local home or foster home could be found then we would assist with any future vet bills if required, as long as he was treated at our vet.

It broke my heart to say goodbye to him, but for his sake I am delighted to report that Shane now has a new home with a lovely couple who have experience of blind dogs, a HUGE garden, and loads of love to give. Thank you all for your kind offers and thoughtful remarks.
