Niico - White Long Coat Shepherd. 6 y/o entire Male on medication for epilepsy.

Niico has lived with his family since he was a pup and is a perfect, playful family pet. His owner is out at work for 7 or 8 hours each day now and he barks non stop when left alone in spite of various attempts to quieten him down. Understandably the neighbours are not too happy about this so the family are reluctantly trying to find him a new home where he isnt left alone.

The epilepsy started at age 2 and after about 4 fits over a few months medication was started, he is now on KBr 325mg twice daily and Pb 30mg twice daily, a very low dose which has stopped the fits completely. He is fed Chappie dry complete food and is no problem with the meds.

He is fine with older children but will chase cats out of his garden. He will play football all day. They live in a rented property in Hastings.

A very reluctant and frightened Niico was collected from the seaside on Friday, he has given us a few problems but no fits so far in spite of all the stress. Today he has calmed somewhat but we have some way to go before we can make him happy again, definitely work in progress!!!

I am very glad we didnt put him straight into a home or use a transport relay, once away from his mum he was a different dog.

Niico is a worry, he is still not eating properly in spite of £300 worth of vet bills last w/e.

The full story can be read on our forum here..........

It will be a long time before he will be ready for a home.

Poor love, :cryingtissues: , I just read the whole story on him. You guys deserve a huge applause :clapping: for persevering with him. I hope :fingers crossed: that he continues to make steps forward, even if they are only baby steps.

Come one Niico, these people care about you, show them you can overcome your disappointment about leaving your previous family - show them you'll make someone else a wonderful companion. :smitten:

He is still improving and is eating a little now so I think we will win in the end - but what a bond with his old people that he should be so ill because of it. Incredible!!!

Sorry I missed this last post, there are updates on his blog on our forum I'm sure. He is pretty much normal now, still no fits even on reduced meds. He mixes well with 4 others at play time, he takes treats from my hand and no longer barks at me. He is in love with one of our volunteers who resembles his mum a little. Always completely clean but can be noisy when he wants something so I do understand why his old neighbours were hacked off with him.

Niico, now always known as Fish (don't blame me, it was his owners pet name for him and it has just stuck since he came here) is much more chilled out these days. He is still eating like a horse and has settled very happily into his spot in the conservatory. He loves to see what is going on and happily watches all the comings and goings. He is generally quiet but will bark to let you know when he thinks it is time for food or playtime. We don't have any growling these days although he still doesn't actively seek out fuss from either of us. Interestingly, when he had to meet the vet for his check up and vaccinations he was calm enough with the vet, albeit a little shy. Once on lead he accepts his fate and is happy to stand for attention but given the choice would rather be at a bit of a distance, even the girl he bonded with here he is indifferent to now.

Fish is now very happy at play times as he has a girlfriend and they spend hours together down in the paddock playing and wrestling which can get out of hand. Still no signs of any seizure activity and the vet is happy for us to look at doing a gradual reduction of meds but we were waiting till he was as calm as possible. I think that all in all Fish is now pretty happy with his life but to call him calm and relaxed would be stretching it.

We did wonder if he would change in a home so we asked a local vet nurse fosterer if she would foster him for a bit. Once she saw his behaviour she declined because she felt that she couldnt be sure that he wouldnt escape and neither of us feel confident that we could catch him even now if he got loose.

This presents us with real problems with rehoming since very few homes have a secure paddock attached. We would also not wish to once again put him through the torture that he suffered when he came here. He is still on our rehoming list but any potential adopter MUST be willing to come here day after day and work with him until we see that he is happy with them and totally bonded and under their control - quite a tall order!

Yes he is, he has relaxed a bit and is now loose in the house but absolutely no interest in him at all, you would think he had the plague rather than epilepsy! Actually we now feel that he is settled enough to try a further reduction in meds over time so perhaps that will make him more desirable. He is on such a low dose that our vet feels that he has no need of it at all.
