2 days in rescue can be a long time

Posted on behalf of Vigil GSD rescue

Winnie, 23 month old Girl Black tan long coat, needs socalising with other dogs, although we mixed her today with a male and a bitch and she was okay. Came into rescue for being too protective to her lady owner even to the womans hubby. Winnie only has a short tail due to an accident with a closing door. She is not to be rehomed with children.

We looked after Winnie for her previous owner last year whilst they were on holiday. She's quite a 'noisey' girl but we had no problems with her, she needs someone that is 'on top of her' not vice versa all the time. She mixed with all my dogs and bitches fine, althou she does have a tendancy to mouth to get others to play. Winnie also gets a fixation on one particular person and is totally obsessed by that person, here it was Hannah our daughter, she followed her everywhere. I had stopped all mouthing, jumping up in the week I had her, her owner walked back through my gate to get her - wham, back to her old ways! A strong voice and take no nonsense from this girlie is a must. Her previous owner did try a couple of behaviourist with Winnie, she really has tried to sort her out and I know when I see her on Monday she will be in bits at having to rehome her. Her Previous owner didnt have her from a small puppy, she was about 5 months old and from what I can gather was kept with her half brother.
I also know the half brother to Winnie, he is the same, fixated on one person, also female, mouths to the extreme that he draws blood, even the male owner says he's not a nice dog - my answer, a dog is what you put into them.

I'd say that she would do better living in a large pack (like mine!!!), so she didn't get the 'concenrated' one to one attention from the owner. I think if she went as an only dog, the problem would not go away. She needs to form strong bonds with a doggy family I think, not so much a human one.

I had 5 dogs here when we looked after Winnie, all Gsd's. She used to play for a while then realise that Hannah (our daughter) had gone visiting next door, Winnie would sit and whine at the fence til she came home, nothing, no treats, commands would drag her away and indoors. When Hannah came in, Winnie would not leave her side til she went to bed, even then she used to jostle for position outside the bedroom gate with the other dogs.
Winnie is a lovely girl, but as I said when she was first posted, she really does need someone who is 'no nonsense' with her all the time.
