Reported in The Irish Times newspaper: " Minister to ban fighting dogs The Government is to ban the importation and ownership of dogs that can be used to fight each other. Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlan said she is preparing legislation that will include a ban on importation of certain breeds of dogs." Under our Control Of Dogs Act (1986) only the Minister for the Environment had the power to "ban" a breed - the fact that this seems now to be within the remit of Agriculture makes me think that dogs may be soon coming under Agriculture ???????? What is now worrying is the phrase "ownership of dogs" - and if this is the "ban" reborn nationwide? Targeting certain breeds? Will update when we have more information on the content of the new proposed legislation. |
