Normaly When a dog is taken out of the pound it will go into foster or kennels then it will be at least 2 weeks before it is sent to the Uk thats if a home is not found in Ireland ,It may have to be neutered and vaxed first, under normal circumstances you cannot take it out to bring it to the Uk immediatley. John. I agree John - but also the temperment needs to be assessed. 2 weeks is really not sufficient to vax, neuter, worm & assess. A dog coming out of a pound situation needs "downtime" before any vet procedures are carried out. Immediate vaxing may have an adverse affect on an already "stressed" dog. Worming is very important and only when the dog is in a healthy condition - i.e. normal weight etc. then it may be neutered/spayed. People may fail to realise that the transport itself can also cause stress to a dog, so if the dog is not in peak physical shape, then it should not be transported. The time frame of 2 weeks is too short a period if the dog is travelling out of Ireland considering all the various vet procedures needed to be carried out prior to transport. It really is not simply a matter of get them out for 2 weeks and then transport. The mental & physical health of each and every dog is more important. There is no legislation which says you must do this,or that, prior to transport, but we must have the dog's well being foremost and consider the appropriate time frame for each dog based on the condition ( physical & mental) of each dog. Dogs coming out of Pounds are under enough pressure, they do not need further pressure on their systems by "rushing" vet.and other procedures. One example of this would be honey. She was a 3 month old dog that we (C.A.L.L) took from the pound. She is now with us 6 weeks as that is the lenght of time it took her, to be ready to go. Every dog is different but I would not vax a dog until it is at lease 2 weeks out of the pound and then as Gill said there is the worming ect. In some cases there is the fact that some of these dogs are abused and need time need to learn to trust again this is the case with Honey. She is now a happy dog and will make someone a very happy owner. Not every dog is the same and I dont think 2 weeks is enough for any dog. |
