![]() ![]() AAR by Njord Ancient Empires Elysium v1.3 Very Hard/ Very hard The sea gulls circlied curiously around the light Aphract. Land ahead, Land ahead the lookout screamed with broaken voice and pointed west. Antio Sextio rose to his feet and begun to rub his wet and cold butt. His lipps was swollen and his back felt sour. He tossed a coin into the green glistering see and thanked Posiedon for a journey without storms or pirates. After 3 months of sailing they had reached their destination On the hillside 3 leagues west of their vessel lay the cartagian trading outpost Aleria. A quite small outpost. Neither big nor wealty. Nevertheless it was one of many trade link between Gaul and Carthage. Carthagian gold went in one direction and Gaul mercenaries in the other. An hour later Antio was in full negotiations with the carthagian governor. The trade agreement was settled. Rome would have shippments of Pottery and Aleria would recieve marble in exchange. Antio boasted the valour of the roman city. In alliance with Campanians and the Marsi peoples they was destined to rule the peninsula. An alliance between Rome and Carthage would certainly benefit both contries. The Governor smiled sly and replied after a moments gazing. Carthage is a peacfull trading nation. It does not ally with any city in Magna Graecca. And it does certainly not ally with a city in war with four other peoples. It would drag carthage into the wars and damage its peacefull trade. Antio recognised the wise answer and bowed to the well articulated reply. Antio tried a new angle. With your support we could conquer our enemies and bring Peace, wealth and trade to our partners and sponsors. The officer smiled again. Already we do have full trade relations with Lucania, Samnium, Bruttium and the Etruscan people. An agreement of financial support against our trading partners would surely impare on theses agreements. However a small gift of my personal treasury will probably come in handy if you can bring us your maps of the current situation. The officer clapped his hands twice to the servants. Let us now enjoy the trade agreement reached today. You must be starving after your journey. Please taste this cyrtian wine and these dadles... You se this exquisite pottery... Antio begun to relax. After all he was only 29 and he had completed his first task. He certainly needed to relax. Perhaps he could learn somthing from this friendly man. Edited by Njord, Jun 3 2010, 12:41 AM.

Thanks Limes What a nice layout on the chapter headline you made for me. What kind of program did you use ? I still haven´t figureds out how to paste a print screen (BPM) into this page. Can anyone give me a hint ! ![]() Secundus the Samnite general continued to attack Lucius in Campania. With his experienced tough samnite infantry the romans would be put on the defensive. He never sensed the trap as the pursuit become more tiresome. Lucius retreated and retreated and soon he had dragged Samnites deep into Campania. The Samnites sure of their coming victory tailed the tired Romans like a predator tail their victim. The gathered spoils of the rich Campania and their baggage train grew longer and slower. The Samnites discussed how they would divide the spoils of Campania . Some men would surely say Hubris. Lucius would later say " To catch a snake you need a nice bait. A tasty bait like me " From Lucania, The hidden senatorial army under Publius command sneeked up behind the Samnites. Secundus sensing somthing wrong when his rear-guard spotted a roman scout ordered halt and rest ontop of a small hill. The roman camp below bustled with activity and sounds. Armors was getting their last minute polish, spearheads and swords sharpened and water was handed out. The mass of roman soldiers begun to line up. Publius Valerius Laevenius was in command of the Roman main army. He had been looking forward for this moment for several years. He commanded over 1000 soldiers recruited from allied territories Campania, Picentum and Latium. He lacked cavalry and archer/slinger support but the numbers of heavy troops was enought to crush any atempt by the sourrounded Samnites. He gazed at the summit of the hill and covered his eys with his hand. So this was it he thought. 1600 romans outnumbering the 620 hardy Samnites. He sent a prayer to Mars and mounted his brown mare. On his hourse in a impeccible polished armour, Publius made the final inspection of his troops. They seamed eager well supplied. After a short speach , he never was much of talker, he boasted their bravery and strenght. He raised his hand for the attack, hesitated then made the signal. Instantly the trumpeters tone followed the woods and fields. A chill went down his spine. On the other side of the hill Lucius respondede with the same trumpet signal. The battle begun. His ordered his allied spearmen and fast velities uphill at full speed. The hardy Samnites a bit surprised greeted his first wave of attackers with a pillas. Many fell but their deaths granted his more valuable troops time to get into pila distance without disturbance. The samnites charged but was repelled easily. A couple of spearmens entangled in their line was crushed with a charge from Publius. In the distanc he saw Lucius emerg over the crest. He smiled the called him "Lucius the infantryman" and he boy did he know how to use the infantry. The samnites was pushed back furiuosly towards Publius line of death. He glanced at the sub commander and noded. His deep voice shouted out the cammand and was repeted by each sub officer " Hastati, Principi, Velites Piiiiiilas ready ....... Piiiiiilas engage" Heavy missiles flew with a hising sound and stroke their targets with thuds and metal clangs. The samnites screamed and cursed the romans, dragged their wounded and dead back. Some threw their spear-nailed shields away or picke dup dead comreads equipment Before the samnites could attack the next wolley was in the air. It hit hard and scores of men fell with nasty damages. From the Samnite back ranks the swordfight intensified as Lucius men pushed and killed stabbed and trampled. The last remnants of the once proud Samnite army was chased downhill in a feable root. It was a clear victory and only filth, blood and goor remained of the hill tribes best warriors. Publius steped down from his horse. Blood stained, dirty and weary he stumbled over corpses and arrived at the spot of the trampled General Secundus. His limbs lay in strange angles and his blood soaked mantle was torned into pieces. Publius though " I hate this job I´ll will rather govern Capua then fight these hill tribes again" He bowed slowly and put a coin in the mouth of Secundus. " May Kerberos grant you passage into hades " Then he rose sighted and looked at his grim boadyguard. He turned and walked away back to the camp. Edited by Njord, Jun 3 2010, 03:16 AM.

Chapter III: Quintus Enjoys life 280 BC Summer Roma Quintus had no shoes on him he not even a toga. Actually he was as naked as the day he was born. It was almost 50 years ago he had begun his campaigns and his body has gathered many scars. He lay in his pool in the governors villa and enjoyed the life. Sipping on a cup of wine he thought it had been worth all the troubel. Since the reports of the victories in the south he begun to believe that it was possibel to turn the tide of the war He remembered when he had been young and the City had been facing battles everywhere from North, South and in the west. They had prevail and come out on top of the situation. The Etrusci invasions had suddenly stopped dead in the track. Although minor border skirmishers occured. Rumors spoke of a new vicious Gallic tribe invading the whole Poo valley. Roma had grown strong. Allied tribes, subordinate tribes and conquered tribes all had gathered manpower and arms and tributes. The strength in the new Manipular system, the pilas and the Gladius Hispania had proven decisive elements in their conquest of middle Italy. His strategy was clear. Crush the Samnites, absorb the Lucanians push the Molossians and the arrogant general Pyrrus out of Italy. Then they would take their arch-enemy the Etruscans head on. Chapter IV: To pull the tail 280 BC Autumn, Lucania Lucius stod before his Officers on the hill side. Each was responsible for 80 men under his command. They were a grizzly ugly bunch and many had been in his service since the first outbreak of hostilites. They was not much for reciting greek poetry, arguing or discussing other topics then killing, siege engineering or the latest armours developed. They had a one function and one function only to keep the army together during march, camp life and during battle. He enjoyed their company and felt himself relaxed around them. Appius Balbinius snored at Cato the old. We can not beat the Lucanians head on. They will only call in the Samnites to stab us in our backs or raid our supply trains. Let me tell you the story about how to pull the tail of the donkey. Cato laughed, another of your stories. Ha Ha Ha you younglings have so many stories from your nanies. Lucius could hardly keep his face stright the young Appius had joined 12 years old and had recently risen into commanding position sixteen years old. Cato among the oldest always liked to remind Appius of his age. Appius ignored the insult and continued. A man has not the strength to pull all the hair from the donkeys tail, but if he draw hair by hair he will eventually success. Appius was right. Army by army they would weeken the Samnites & Lucanians. The young lad had head for strategy. Lucius would reccoend him for Garrison duty. where he could develop his managing skills. Four skirmishers later the Lucanian city council pledged for peace. Their main army far away and all minor armies beaten they had no other choices left then to accept the Roman law. Chapter V : Balbinus Strikes a deal 280 BC Autumn, Paestum Appius Balbinus rode slowly into Paestum. A couple of traders and inhabitants was walking in the street. Since the slave-raid after the fall of the city, it felt ghostly abandoned. Most doors to living quarters were heavily fortified. All tempels and offices was unattended. It was not a nice sight " I guess they are still afraid" his priest concluded with a sad expression on his face. From the plaza a messenger came running. His speed was running at full speed and was heading their way. He arrived panting heavily next to Appius. " There is ..... a high ranking .......visitor waiting ..... in the Governors villa ..........Please hurry sire" A short galopp later Appius was resting next to the visitor on a divan in the Governors villa. He was a bit perplexed. Never had he encountered such an eloquent well dressed diplomat befor. He was richly decorated in gems and his toga was of best quality. He moved with a grace and his powerful frame whitnessed of past in perhaps the phalanx armies. A merc perhaps or a man from the royal guard ? He spoke the Italian dialect quite good to be a foreigner and his open straightforward ways charmed eweryone. His gaze was firm and confident. This was a man of high power. "I am Erxandros of Naulochos from the molossian clan , former general Naulochos, now negotiator of the Epirot Kingdom. I bear message from the great King Pyrrus himself. In is enlighted wisdom he wishes an immideately ceasefire of hostilites between with the Roman city state and our peaceloving people " Appius replied : " I appius subcommander of Lucius The general. I welcome you Erxandros of Naulochos to the city of Paestum. I regrett that we can not grant you a more suitable reception than your high rank demands. But as a warrior to warrior I hope it will do. On what conditions would your greet warrior king grant an cease fire ? " Our conditions are four and four only I. Roma Redraw its legion to Campania from Paestum and will only Garrison Paestum lightly. II. Epirot will pay a tribute of 400 denarii each season for two years to Roma III. Roma stops all agressions with the Samnites. and as a gesture of our good fait in this deel we will also hand you IV. Control of Tarentum and its province The tarantines created the clash between our peoples now they will get a new master as punishment. Appius was stunned. These terms was to good to belive. The seal of the parchment with the conditions were in order, So there was nothing to doubt. He had to take the offer. "On behalf of the Romans/lucanians/Picenans and the Campanian peoples I accept." He summoned the messanger and dispatched him at full speed to Quintus in Roma. This deal would grant him governorship for sure. He smiled as he emptied the jug of water. Chapter VI: Border tensions 280 BC Winter, Campanian For three months the Romans had retreted slowly back through a rainy Campania. The loot and the slaves was dragging them down in the mud. In spite of many tiresome lifts of broken wagons and bad wheather they headed for higher ground in the mountain region. Lucius army had reach the destination close to the border region between Samnium and Campania. A no mans land with high peaks and deep walleys perfect for ambushes and defensiv lines. Lucius forward scouts had for a couple of days found tracks of a large enemy, a disturbing news. After a double check with the roman spy network in Samnium, Lucius had it confirmed what he feared. Two Samnite armies was within marching distance from their camp. Fully supplied and well drilled. One of the armies had entrenched itself in the Caudinian pass blocking access to the capital Corfinum. The samnites had bolstered their defences with defected Lucanians, mercs and Tarentines. Lucius was surprisingly outnumbered. He spitted when he spoke and his face had turen into a purple colour. " Pyrrus that damn greek has tie us up here as he cleans out the south for himself. Lucius went on his monology waving his arms around him. His Priest and bodyguards tried to shrink through the mudy field. This was not they day to object Lucius. " Soon he will recapture Tarentum with its pesky defences. We are outnumbered and will probably fight the entrenched heavy army of samnium on their own conditions" He shaked his head sighted and walked determined away from his entourage. The camp was quite. How many boys and men would not return in the coming campain. He walked between the tents and noded to his men he headed for the command tent in the middle of the camp. As he approached the long thin clerk stared at him with open mouth. Orders " Prepare two Letters, First. Warn Tarentum of the present danger. Second Inform Roma of the a situation here and demand re-enforcements." Sign it with Lucius " He turned to the Scribe in head of the records. "Any news from the the Northern front?" Sire, one of the Etruscan armies are besieging the Anacona. They have preapared rams, ladders, siege towers and are amassing their troops. Scouts believe the attack will come in the spring when the ground can bear the weight of their equipment. The defenders are roughly equal in numbers and will probaly put up a hell of fight. Chapter VII: The Arch-enemy at the gates 279 Spring Picentum Gaius Fabrisius Luscinus watched over the battlements. The Etruscnas slowly marched forward He shouted out "Order. We outnumber them with 200 men. So let us throw this assualt force back the way they came. Delay them as long as possible take out that ram and fall back to the city center." He ran to the velitess next to the gate. Orders, Target the men carrying ladders they can not raise there shield. Kill as many as possibel. Fall back to the tower over there and protect the flank. The archers in the towers have barricated themself and will give you support when you retreat drag them in the fire of the towers. Then he ascended the wall and mounted his horse. It was a tiresom claimb in the heat and he was glad he didi not have to do it under fire with a shield on top of him. Not long after the wolleys of pilas from the walls had ceased the romans abandoned the walls. He pointed for the plaza and retreated. The Etruscans getting winded by the climb in the heat had lost men to the tower archers and velitees. Eager to prove themself for their general Sartres they pushed on. A price was set on 10 denarii on the soldier that captured the roman generals head. Easily they over-ran the walls and made the descend down to the Gate. They were the proud elite assualt force consisting of heavy Umbrians spears and swords. Skilled in their dire profession the splitted into two columns First column chased the defenders to the plaza and the next chasing after the velitees. It was a nerving task to follow the velitees arrows from windows, stones and sudden spears coming from windows and towers hit them from all corners. As they closed in on the velitees and charged they simply ran away. And the routine repeted itself exhausted without killing a single enemy they soon perished. In the center the fight for the plaza raged. The Umbrian mers clased with the roman defenses but could not penetrate the tight formation. As the spearmen begun to fall Gaius decided to make a charge. He positione himself on the right flank and thundered into the ranks of the Swordmen. The speed and his momentum swept away all resistans and the Mercs flew in all directions. They died as true Acrobats. Sartres was caught in wild vicius fight in the street. not being able to manoever. It turned into a slugging match. The blows bounced of the Etruscans heavy armors. Desperately Gaius shouted " Aim for their armpits, neck or face". He thrusted and swinged and his arm begun to ache. He was soaked in sweat and his throat was burning of the dry air. A sudden thrust from a Swordman to the knee joint finaly brought Sartres down on the ground. A thrust in the face ended his missery. He died instantly as the life of his brave comrades slowly coloured the the dust black. The outnumbered Etruscans tried to retreat for the gates only to be hacked into pieces of the defenders. Gaius raised his hand and shouted Victory Victory Victory !!!!! His soldiers answered his call and hit their swords agains their shields. Ancona was saved. Edited by Njord, Jun 3 2010, 05:20 AM.

Chapter VIII: Comita Tributa 279 Spring, Latium Roma The celebrations in Roma continued a second day. There was hardly any transportations available since all the Patricians and wealthy traders had gathered for the celebrations. Flowers filled the streets and the poor gazed at the rich and powerfull that entered the city. Quintus was dressed in his best toga. It was a white thin linen toga, cut in the traditional manners. Truly a masterpiece of his tailor. He stroke the seams with his dry rough hand and followed the dyed streaks of red on the sleeve. Interwoven silver strands in the fabric made his movements glittering and joyful. In front of him the tribes in the Roman League had gathered. Thirty five tribes, ural, rural and allied waited patiently for him to begin in the newly built Tributa Assembly. Three years of victories had spread a confidence over the gathering. No more panic or dramatic outbursts or threats to leave the alliance. Trade prospered although the roads still was in bad conditions. The army swollowed much of the money but to quit the war was not an option. Quintus cleared his throats and begun his well rehersed speeach. " Herby under the watching eays of our ancestral gods and with great honour I open the Comita Tributa assembly. May our gods guide our descisions wisely. And that we never sway under the influence of enemy gold or arms." The tribesmen bowed thier heads in submission as the priests trhust the celebrational knife in the black bulls heart. The blood gushed and oouzed and the priests held their hands up and spoke to the goods. An half hour later all the spectators had touched the blood and put a red mark in their forhead. Time for business The status reports had been read from the Etruscan, Samnite and southern frontier. Quintus was elected to lead the tribes for further three years. During a voting the assembly approved reinforcments to campania. Each tribe should send their strongest men to the mountain pass where lucius camped. The Lucanians claimed Pyrrus had been seen with his merc army in the area of Tarentum. The meeting ended with a large mixed up discussion between the tribes heads. Trade agreements was discussed and new building prodjects and friends long time not meeting with each other cathed up on family matters . New aquaintences was made and much honour was given Quintus. The meeting was a great personal success for Quintus and his new status brought his leadership a new elevated status. Roma the city on the seven hills was now a force to be reconed with in italy. Chapter IX: Clash in the mountains 279 Autumn, Samnium Caudinian Pass Lucius arrayed the roman army in a checkboard pattern and it walked slowly forward. His Velitees had screened their advanced and attacked agressively any Samnite attack. The first roman line passed the skirmishers. Spears came hissing and men fell. The Samnite main line waited for the first Roman line to arrive at pila distance. When they did, a duel of pilas was followed up by a quick charged. The two lines interlocked with smashing shields and the second roman line trowed their spears at point blank distance and filled the gaps of the first line. The left wing of the romans composed of veteran triarii. It pushed the Samnite wing backwards and step by step the samnites gave ground slowly the flank turned inwards. This was the moment. Lucius gathered his velites and his cavalry and entered the forest at the roman right. When the taskforce was ready he ordered an attack. 80 meters into the wood they ran over unit of swordmen fighting a Principa and they fell rapidly. Reinforced by a spearmen and heavy cavalry the Samnites gathered new strength. The flank would not crumble although the envelop was almost complete. In the fray the metal against metal the noices was deafening. A mix of shouts and screams from the dying and the wounded and the grunts and commands of the living. A roman fell and directly his comrade picked up his positions in the line. A Smanite fell and his position was filled with the next. A deadly stalemate a slugging match to the last breath. Men slipped fell was stunned maimed or injuried....the death lingered ewerywhere. But no-one thought to throw their shield and to desert their comrades in arms. the deed lay in piles and to move was impossibel. Finally Lucius relentless charging broke the back of the Samnite left flank. His cavalry rushed out of the woods followed by light infantry at full spead. The Samnites locked in the deadly push and gore fight in the center, could do nothing more then to wait for the impact. The swift runners slammed into and stabbed their unprotected backs. Surprisingly the samnites held ground and started to push back the velites in a desperate attemp. As the preasure built up by more and more units the samnite got desperate. It happend in a moment of a split second the whole army broke and men begun to ran for the hill. It was one of Lucius bloodiest battle ever and his army was exhausted. On the field that day lay a unrecognisable pile of dead men and horses It took the sacrifice of 700 brave Romans to clear the pass into samnium. 1100 of Samnites best men joined them. Today all tribes had lost many kinsmen and a weeks mourning was proclamied in the land of the Romans Edited by Njord, Jun 4 2010, 12:32 AM.

Chapter X: Rebuild and reform 279 Winter, Campania What was left of the Roman Army (400 men) rested in warm quarters in Capua as the fresh winter winds swept over Campania. Doctors and surgeons had hectic days to patch together the veterans. Remarkable many got back into service within weeks from the battle in the caudinian pass. The week passed away. New recruits was drafted to fill the ranks and each morning they ran in full armour around the city walls encouraged by their drill captains. During the evenings the veterans told them how to survive and how to take care of equipment. Lucius spent most of his time with his family etiher walking the streets of the city´s many markest or relaxing at friends estates. He noticed that son was getting found of the stables and animals. So one day Lucius decided to surprise him. The rode a couple of legues to one of the famous horse breeding installation on the country side. There they met with horse trainers, stable boys and soldiers and learned quite a lot of how the life of the horse Strong animals breeded with disciplin and love was the only honourable way for the devoted workforce. Rider and animal developed a close relation during the years. His sons eays was wide opened, part admiration part fear. After a day with fresh air the owner of the hors pads invited the famous Roman hero "Lucius the infantryman to his house for a dinner. His ancestors had fleed Thessaly during the wars of Alexanders the great. The dinner was fat and was richly flavoure, in the tradition of the easteners. By all peoples of the earth the easteners new best how to treat a horse. The owner told Lucius stories about Alexanders battles and his remarkable cavalry charges. The Companions could break through everything except heavy entranced infantry in deep formation and they was the key to many of Alexanders victories. A weapon of speed, fear and shock. Lucius loved infantry and he realised that he had never understood the role of cavalry. The owners stories opened his mind bit for bit. Late into the night with his son sleeping on the divan he formed new strategies with the owner. Hammer/Anvill, Center shock and rolling of the flank. At the trip back he decided to give the cavalry a new important role as shock assualt. A couple of weeks his new cavalry force routed a detachment of scouts in the middle of the night. In Roma the steady increasinlgy stream of goods jammed the streets in the harbour districs. Quintus utterly tired of the reports ordered the construction of a larger harbour. He greeted honoria now a grown woman that had wed the ambitious commander Tiberius Manlius Curius. Edited by Njord, Jun 4 2010, 03:18 AM.

Chapter XI: Pyrrus on the move 278 Spring, Tarentum Pyrrus rode through the smashed walls of tarentum. In the city the battle raged. The horns of the Elephants and the screams of the dying. It was as usually. He was winning. His army had begun the street fighting after smashing the walls with ease. Now they fought the city that once had called them to Magna Graeeca. Fighting fellow greeks he did not like at all. There was no glory in slaying boys, old men and women equiped sticks and stones. He was tired of this campaign. The Romans never attacked and his allies was not reliable. Willage after willige he had conquered and the loot sent home paid barely his mercenaries. In greece the City states had pushed back his relatives in Macedon and evli thonges claimed the phalanx was obsolete. They knew so little of fighting. A messenger rode up to him. My king " The Tarentines have barricaded the streets with rubble. Our phalanxes can not break through. We loos many good men to this milita Pyrrus hesitatet. How come that they had been so well prepared for his assualt. Armed with deadly throwing spears this milita now barricaded the city. It was the the work of the romans. How had they learnt about his brilliant plan ? Was there a commanding officer in their ranks ? To hades with this city " send forward the elephants " The beasts smashed the barricades and debri and men and charged the defenders. Behind the barricade waited the tarentine milita Houndreds of spears was thrown at the mighty beasts. They charged, trampled and gored the townspeople. but the spears still came flying and soon one of them hit a soft spots in the skin of one elephants. It shuddered stumbled and fell over a group of tarentines. The next beast was blinded and the blood loss forced it down on its forward nees. Its breathing was roustling. A old man with white beard drove his spear deep into the eay of the beast. In a dying reflex the sharpened tusk pierced the man. Man a beast the perished at the plaza The third beast looked like a nail cusion by all the spears. A boy not able to get away from its charge hid under its belly. With a scream he drove the shaft of his broken spear into the belly. The Elephant rose on his back legs and more men drove their spears into the poor animal. The boy sooaked in elephant blood from foot to head stumbled away. He had lost is lust for fighting. The Epirot heavy phalanx lowered its spears and nailed the last elepant running amok. It died trampling thrashing its own men. The plaza was sweapt clear by the Elite Phalanxes and the Milita was buhered to the last man The roman commander Captain vibius sourrounded by enemies fell with a spear in his back. Tarentum was Epirot again but they had payed a high prize. Their Elepahnts and 70 of their best assualt troops. Edited by Njord, Jun 4 2010, 03:19 AM.
