I have no idea about the text files causing CTD :(. It makes no sense. I know that different operating systems have different ways of handling special characters, such as /n (newline) and /eof (end of file), but I doubt that is it. You can try using a different OS if you have one readily available.

I highly recommend Notepad++. I used that to code the installer. It's color coding and grouping really helps to spot common errors such as a missing ( or ;.

Oh leave an "i" out of Publius or something with one of the name files and you get an instant CTD and show_err does not help.

Limes has me apparently back in business. At least the game runs. Now I have to see if I can mod anything. People might want to ignore that bit on the Installation Page about using the compatibility mode for Win 7.

I am getting CTD now with every faction once i end the first turn. :( Maybe you or limes can send me the fix. I didn't touch anything I swear :)

On another note: Pontus has a similar problem as Illyria with mixed cultures. Pontus is Eastern, but royal family is GrecoRoman and provinces start off as GrecoRoman.

Hehe. Win7 is the best?

I checked installer with fresh copy of RTW 1.6 and it works fine. You mentioned sth about RTW Gold version.

Mine worked once....and then I put in show_err and it crashed.

Unfortunately, removing show_err did not fix the problem.

Now it is telling me that I have the wrong disk in the drive!!!!!

Here is my report after last night's failure.

This morning I deleted the entire game from my D: drive and reinstalled a clean copy of BI to 1.6 and then installed AEE. I then adjusted the shortcut per Limes' earlier instructions.

I then started a new Roman campaign on VH/VH. The game loaded.

Turn 1 - The game ran and advanced.
I used the building and money cheats...all was well.

Turn 2 - The game ran and advanced.

Turn 3 - The game ran and advanced.

Turn 4 - The game ran and advanced.
Tried a battle on the battle map. No problem

Turn 5 - The game ran and advanced.

Turn 6 - The game ran and advanced.

At this point I exited the game (properly not using Alt-F4) but rather the Game Menu.

I then waited 30 seconds and restarted the game and reloaded the campaign. It loaded properly.

I was thus in Turn 7 and the first thing I did (after starting the 4 TPY script) was try to recruit a unit. As soon as I right-clicked on the unit the game CTD'd.

I took notes as I was going along and have tried to give you everything that I did in the hope that someone will get some idea of what the problem is.

Limes, I really think you should put this out for some of the other guys to test just to see how widespread this problem is. Both Maj and I have encountered it and as far as we know the only place that AEE works is on your computer. It would really be too much to ask of people to have to reinstall the game every time they want to play it.

Just MHO.

Hi. You and MAJ Pain have Windows7. It's not good news. :). Btw, tell me more Spart:

- What unit made troubles?
- will the game work after 7th turn?

Spart, I checked installer with fresh copy of RTW. Everytime I made new version of installer I installed it on fresh RTW copy. There is no such problems with my version. Besides MAJ P has Gold Version of RTW. I heard it sometimes makes troubles.

It was a Roman Principes.

I assume it was working. I deliberately stopped at that point to see if it would reload. Tell you why in a moment. I'm checking something else out and have made some progress.

Stand by.

(I don't have Gold, though.)

Okay, Limes, here is what I've found out so far.

Remember that at the height of my frustration I mentioned that I downloaded Roma Surrectum from TWC? I ran it and it worked. One of the things they mentioned was to go into preferences and turn off the Auto Save feature because it caused problems. I had played RS through before and remembered this.

Now, in AEE in the Rome Total War directory there is a preferences file AND a preferences folder which also contains a preferences file. In both of them I disabled the Auto Save and the green arrow markers which annoy the shit out of me during battles.

I even added in a few of the modded files I'd done for you so far and then started another Roman VH/VH campaign. When I saved it, I went into the game menu via the esc key, selected save and called it "savetest." I had played a few turns so I stopped, exited and restarted the game.

I loaded it from the Load Option on the menu and it has...and still is...working. During the break I even went in and made a few minor changes to the EDU file ( o-turn recruitment for a couple of units....increase manpower...hit points... just anything so that I could see that the changes had taken place. They have...and the game continues to function.

I'm trying to be scientific here. I have a theory that there is something wrong with the Auto Save but in order to test it I need to see if Maj Pain can replicate the solution as he is having the problem and you are not.

With me so far?

So, when you disabled AutoSave in preferences.txt game works ok?

I didn't experience AutoSave problems cause I haven't time to play more than 7 turns :). I'm joking. I played successfully more than 70 turns and game was still ok.

Btw, I'm starting my tests for 10 minutes. I'm going to kill and conquer. :):)

In a nutshell, yes. So I no longer think it had anything to do with text changes or compatibility settings or show_err in the shortcut.

I think there was a f_ck up in the save game system but the only way to tell is to ask Maj to try the fix.

Then...if that works...meaning he can replicate the solution.... we need to figure out how to tell people to be VERY CAREFUL when saving.

I just stopped it again saving it with the Save Game as Savetest1 and Quicksave (CTRL+S) versions. I am going to make some changes to export_buildings.txt before I start it again and see what happens.

I'm feeling a little better about this thing than I was last night, though.

Follow up to last post.

I added the text I had written for the colonization buildings into the export_building.txt file, replacing the XXX that you had placed in there as a placeholder.

I then loaded the game that I had saved as "Savetest1". It crashed when I advanced the turn although not instantly...IOW the turn started and CTD mid-way through.

I then replaced the amended export_building.txt with the original file and re-loaded. It ran successfully.

I am almost convinced at this point that there is something wrong with the Save Game routine because in the past replacing the file with the original would still result in the game crashing. Now, at least, I can fix it.

On another unrelated note, it is now 277 BC and I sent my spy into Ariminum and Pisae on consecutive turns. In each it found that the AI had recruited 5 "mob" units and, apparently, nothing else aside from the original garrison.

What happens if you make "mobs" take 5 turns to recruit and cost 5000 denari? Would the AI choose something faster and cheaper or would it save its pennies until it could purchase one of those "mobs" it loves so much!

Final report for the night.

I have played down to the Spring of 275. No further CTDs. I also reinserted the migration building descriptions.

I took Pisae. The new walls look good.

Why I had problems with the Save Game routine and you did not is a mystery.

Tomorrow before I re-start I will put the show_err back into the shortcut to see what happens.

Spart. Definitely the problem is export_building file.

Do you remember? I've added "dsdfsffjkgdg" to show you that AEE works with italref description. Imagine that game stopped to work. Everytime I pressed "End Button" game crashed. I spent whole day reverting changes. All files in working backup copy are the same as in my preparatory version, besides...

... besides export_buildings.

I restored old export_buildings file without "dsdfsffjkgdg" and game works again.

I will have to check AEE with your export_buildings. Maybe, it'll run.

Don't do anything yet. I'll email the export_building file that I am currently using.

It does contain that text that you added but the game is working. I have more good news. The Quick Save (Ctrl+s) routine also works. The only problem I encountered was the Auto Save and with that turned off, AEE has been flying right along.

Now, I'm not playing Pontus at the moment so I can't see that gibberish text you put in on the board - but it is in the file that I am working with right now.

sorry for interrupting you guys, but limes I have an idea:
Don't you want to insert aqd's Unit Mod for the Seleucids, Bactrians, Armenians and the others for which you did not have any time to make new unit skins?

Hi. Definitely game with file containing "dfsdfsdggg" doesn't work. It's working with:

- shortcut (-mod:) without Italref description (the best option),
- and with shortcut (show_err) with your file

It means that it's likely there is sth wrong with reform buildings or packs.

@ Danylp.

For now I'm not thinking about adding new things. I have to fix present first.
