Every single year almost half a million teens choose to run away from home. The reasons are different, but the results are often eerily similar. Young men and women are left homeless. Some turn to thievery. Others sell their bodies. They struggle survive on the streets, fighting off hunger, fatigue, and the weather, whether it’s freezing or sweltering. Just imagine digging through trash and doing anything, absolutely anything, for money or food; having to sleep in alley ways where cardboard is the softest thing you’ll find. Nobody cares about these kids. If their parents did, they’ve given up by now. These kids are completely alone. They have no one. If it weren’t for a young woman named Clarissa Evrard, these kids still would have nowhere to go. She isn’t some influential person of power. You can’t say that she had connections. All she had was money and the belief that anyone can make a difference; even a twenty four year old young woman with no college education and tumultuous past of her own. With a generous donation from her father, a wealthy lawyer, Miss Evrard started a home for young adults who have nowhere else to go. Originally her intent was to open up a place for kids who were chased out of their homes for homosexual, but she could not deny anyone who showed up at her door. Now kids have a home to go to. Word is spreading from person to person and kids from all over the country are finding themselves knocking on the large oak doors of a mansion just outside Oxnard, California. It’s a paradise for teens that have grown up with abuse, molestation, drug problems, or anything else. It isn’t just a free ride though. Some show up intending to loaf around and do whatever they please. That is why all teens must sign a contract before they move into Clarissa’s home. There are rules to follow before you will be trusted. Welcome to my home young man or woman, First off, I want you to know that this is a place where you can be free. You can be yourself and not worry about what other people think of you. Everything that happened in your past is exactly that; in your past. You can start fresh here. Begin your life again. Nobody here will judge you. You’re safe from harm, but know that this not a place for you to laze around all day. I was your age not too long ago, so I know what’s going on in your heads. There are rules here and chores that you would find in any household. Bear with me as there are only a few guidelines I must ask you to follow. 1. You will attend classes at the local public high school Monday-Friday just like any other student. You will be expected to maintain a GPA of at least 2.5. 2. I don’t want to catch any of you drinking or smoking in my house. And for that matter there will no drugs allowed in my house. Many of you might have addictions, but it’s time to get over them. That won’t fly here. However, I know I can’t stop teens from having parties. But like I said, I don’t want to see any of you doing that. If I even suspect that there is something more serious than marijuana, your room will be searched and if something discovered there will be serious consequences. 3. Nobody is going to clean up your messes. If you want to live in a clean environment then you clean it up yourself. Clean your room. Clean your dishes. And clean your own clothes. There is a laundry room in the basement for your convenience. 4. I am just here to give you a place to live and two meals a day. The kitchen is always open, but will only serve breakfast and dinner every day. Lunch is up to you. If you want to go out to eat you better have your own money. I don’t give handouts. If you need money get a job. 5. Pets are allowed and even encouraged here. However, you must be logical about this. Obviously you cannot keep horses in the backyard. All pets are kept in your rooms with exception of dogs. Dogs are allowed in the house, but they must be with you at all times while inside. I will not be stepping in dog excrement in my own home. After 9pm or whenever you want them to wander freely they must be outside in the kennel. That is where they sleep and will be fed. 6. Treat me, my house, and your fellow housemates with respect. I cannot control what you do. You have no curfew and you are permitted to go anywhere you please. The beach is only short walk away. I suggest you take advantage of that as well as the boardwalk. And might I say, the shopping is incredible. Don’t make me regret welcoming you into my home. Remember I want you to feel safe and loved. My office is always open if you need to speak with me, and I will provide a counselor if you decide you need to talk to someone who can help you through more serious emotional issues. My home is your home. Enjoy your stay here. By signing this document you are assuring me that you understand all of the rules that were explained and you are promising me that you will follow them to the best of your ability. Your, Clarissa M. Evrard As much as she would like to help the world, Miss Evrard is only out there to help runaway teens in need of a hand. Only kids nineteen and younger walk her halls. Nineteen year olds are allowed simply because she worries that some students might finish high school a little later than others. Homeless adults are given a hot meal and a place to stay for a night before they are sent on their way. It’s time to turn your life around. So walk through the doors of Clarissa’s home and start your life again. Welcome to the Evrard Home for Runaways. |
