As said plenty of cod around just not insize. I can remember when it was as hard, about 7 years ago just before we had one of the most recent good cod years. Good years, bad years its all part and parcel, just a continuos natural cycle. With all the mini's this year the next 2 or 3 years should be promising. Just got to have patience, which some say anglers usually have lots of. Perhaps some more than others. Cod arent the only fish in the sea though either and there are plenty of other species about to target to keep one occupied. . . |

It's stange how things change. I remember (Oh god here we go ) I here you all say . But back in the late 70s early 80s there were very few good Cod caught from the beaches and all the reports of Cod were from the East coast, but we did get a good run of Pout to well over a pound and a half in late August into September, when we then had the Whiting turn up and at times you had a job to keep up with two rods these Whiting being upto 2lbs. Times change and so does the fishing, I'm still at it and so are many of you. The fish of a lifetime is still out there and all I have to do is catch it.

Don't give up on the cod....January can produce some good catches and given everything seems to be late this year you never know. The cod have good years, but what concern me is the small codling don't seem to be returning the following year. That can only mean they are being caught small. I remember catching approx 120 over 2lb one year, some years ago, then 80 odd the following year, 50 odd the year after, 20 odd the year after and only a few in the following years. ( most returned ). Our problem is our cod go out into the Irish sea. If they stayed in the channel they would stand a chance. Commercial fish-finding equipment has rapidly improved in the last 10 years and techniques to catch them have become more greedy with whole shoals being located, enclosed and scooped up. The south coast cod have the same problem when they head back to the North Sea. I've mentioned my views on discard being a licence to target cod when the quota has been used up so I won't go on about that.... John. |

I can remember seeing snow on the welsh hills in june once.... Why does it have to be cold before the cod turn up?? This has always puzzled me when i hear people mention it. And to be honest its usually peeps who haven't got a clue what they are talking about. The two most productive times for cod fishing in the b.c. is usually autumn and spring when the sea temps are either not that cool or warming up at those times. When we get a freeze everything inshore the fish may be feeding on, be it crab, shrimp or worm die or move out to deeper water. Which is why the shallower marks at the top end are baron during the coldest months. So this cold weather theory makes no sense at all. As it has aready been mentioned theres loads of cod about now just that they're only 6" long plus the odd rogue double. Where are all these mysterious 2ib to 7ib cod going to come from?? You will have to wait till next year when the 6" fish grow a bit bigger. Thats my theory of when the cod worth catching are going to show. |

fish, these small codling are ones that get through nets,as soon as they get bigger they will probably be all trawled up and thats my theory

Year on year we have loads of small codling being caught in the channel and every year people say 'they'll come back bigger next year and we will have a good year/ That very rarely happens. I suspect that Congerman's theory may be right (again). As soon as they stick their snoots out of the channel they are hoovered up never to return. Maybe they will twig on and stay in the channel where they are relatively safe - and that may be already happening. |
