just bought meself some new bearings for my 7ht mag,when new these bearings spin on for ever however when i put a tiny smidging of yellow rocket oil on them it seems to slow the bearing down considerably,does any one know or reccomend any thinner oil or is yellow rocket fuel ok. |

Hi there padman - any bearing without lubricant in it will run freely as there is no resistance against the viscosity of the oil - but running it without oil will make the bearings fail in no time at all - this will be accelerated by use in a salty environment - it will also make your reel difficult to control giving you a few birds nests along the way - always best to apply oil to prolong the life of the bearings and also to give more consistent control over the spool speed of your reel - the different viscosity's of oils giving differing levels of control on your reel - bear in mind that the lighter the oil the less long term protection it will give your bearing - have often wondered if the oil that watchmakers use would be any good to help achieve greater casting distances on some reels ? - hope this helps you in some way mate. |

hi padman yellow will be fine any oil on a brearing will slow it down i have a abu that runs dry i.e no oil at all and that spins like a loony. once the reel is in motion of a cast the oil will warm a run thinner. if i had one i would def run it on yellow. hope this helps |

thanks for your replys gents,bassman funny you should say about clock/watch makers oil i bought some of this oil in the past hence why i bought new bearings.i didnt rate this oil found it almost like cooking oil,purhaps i bought wrong stuff who knows..stick with what you know thanks again for your comments |
