Hi there padman - any bearing without lubricant in it will run freely as there is no resistance against the viscosity of the oil - but running it without oil will make the bearings fail in no time at all - this will be accelerated by use in a salty environment - it will also make your reel difficult to control giving you a few birds nests along the way - always best to apply oil to prolong the life of the bearings and also to give more consistent control over the spool speed of your reel - the different viscosity's of oils giving differing levels of control on your reel - bear in mind that the lighter the oil the less long term protection it will give your bearing - have often wondered if the oil that watchmakers use would be any good to help achieve greater casting distances on some reels ? - hope this helps you in some way mate.

hi padman yellow will be fine any oil on a brearing will slow it down i have a abu that runs dry i.e no oil at all and that spins like a loony. once the reel is in motion of a cast the oil will warm a run thinner. if i had one i would def run it on yellow.
