Now then folks, there's been a few double figure cod out this season already and there's plenty of keepers showing too. So is it too early to say "we're having a good season" ?? I think it's brilliant to be able to go out with a reasonable chance hooking into fish big enough for the table after some poor winters. Last seasons tiny codling have come back and most are insize. Next springs run will be interesting with the fish a pound or so heavier again. But we should also remeber that we can help the situation by keeping the cod that are gut hooked or bleeding from the gills, and returning the lip hooked ones to fight another day. It's personal choice but we cant moan about the overfishing on trawlers if we do the same can we. Maybe the quotas are having an affect and helping stocks, maybe it's the cold winters or maybe it's both. But a revival seems to be occuring and we need to be aware of how fragile it is and do our best to help it whilst still enjoying our sport. So lets hope we all see some cracking sport this winter like the good old days, tighlines everyone!! |

Think you've already answered it in your own post Landlubber - there are more fish being caught that are table sized as opposed to the 4 - 6 inchers of the last few years - whether people decide to keep or return there catch is always down to personal choice - will make a prediction that this year is going to be colder than the last few years (Noticeable by the amount of Autumn berries and fruit about) and that a few more bigger Cod will turn up this year - as for the Trawlers - they are still doing untold damage in the Irish box and I believe that there are measures being taken to stop the massacre that is going on down there - time will tell ! |

Salt water doesn't taste the same as the fish that swim in it! If you don't need it - put the damn thing back
