Thought the Severn Barrage scheme went quiet all of a sudden - now I know why - if one or more of these get put in place your fishing will definitely get worse in the coming years -

It will be a sad day Jim but you got to ask your self can the fishing get any worse and mabe some fish will breed when they get stuck behind the barrage so the trawlers cant get them

I don't think the fishing can any worse than it is at the moment Ern - if these lagoons go ahead they will certainly affect fish movements in future years and they will become full up with Mullet and Flounder no doubt - certainly wipe out several popular fishing marks both shore and boat :(

If they build one, they will build more, as for the fishing, yes it not good at the mo, but at least we have fishing grounds ,with lots of small codling about, it gives me hope for next year! i salmon fish on the river wye, the pattern with salmon and cod are the same 1 good year 3 bad 1 good 5 bad, so on, 2003 i caught 16 salmon, no small grilse, first year returning fish, we all said the next year would be dire, 2004, i caught 49 salmon and the biggest sea trout ever caught on the river wye! we can blame trawlers the sprats the weather the lack of food at sea but the truth is we realy dont no,but one thing we do is if they build the barrage brean down to cardiff or the lagoons we will be in sh-t street, ernie the sole fishing at magor, redwick might not be so good thease days but at least its ther i have enjoyed meany trips for cod and sole fishing at thease marks and would like to think it will be ther for meany more years to come.

First they assessed whether the barrage across the estuary was feasible, now their looking at these lagoons and there are still 2 more power generating options that they are supposed to be looking at - it is more than likely that they will put something in operation to generate power from the Severn estuary in the coming years.
I know what you mean about the third generation (year class) fish returning to provide a reasonable amount of fish to catch - but if the Trawlers are taking a lot of these fish in their 2nd year (and probably dumping them as "by-catch") we are destined to never get another good run of "3rd year" fish - the trawlers should be enlarging the size of mesh in their nets or altering their fishing methods to enable these 2nd year fish to evade capture - if they can't market them, why catch them  - a few years of doing this and you will get 3rd year generation fish returning every year - might even give a few more of em chance to breed which they can't be doing at the minute.
