Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The Viridian Mistress
Once she'd found her room, Cyaryn had unceremoniously dumped her bags on the plain bed. Honestly it was little more than a glorified closet, slightly larger than the room she'd had in the candidate barracks back at Fort, but not by much. The walls were bare and cold, and Cyaryn immediately wanted to pull out the few plants she'd managed to bring and set them out, but for right now she had more important matters on her mind.

She got directions to the creche, and made her way down the halls in an odd combination of a run, a walk, and an unglorified waddle. Faranth, she hadn't realized how much she missed Nelryn until she was so close to seeing her again.

There was an older woman at the door she was directed to, who greeted her with a nod, but a scowl came over her face when it became apparent that Cya was heading for the creche. "They haven't gone to bed yet, have they?" she asked, breathing a sigh of relief when the woman shook her head. "I need to see my daughter."

"We can't just allow--" the woman started, but Cyaryn cut her off.

"Please, I haven't seen her in months, her name's Nelryn," she said, rattling off her daughter's birthdate.

Her voice must have been desperate enough, because the woman let her in, muttering about how there was someone in there anyway.

Cyaryn wandered through, a few children turning to look at her, but most were engrossed in whatever they happened to be doing. She finally saw Nelryn in the back of the room, and her heart swelled. Would Nelryn even remember her? No matter, she was here now, and she was here to stay. "Nelryn?" she called as she neared her daughter. "Nelryn, it's me, it's your mother." A few tears pricked at her eyes, threatening to spill over. She should have just gotten over herself and come to Vaioa when the ousted weyrling class had. She could have stayed with Nelryn; would never have met S'leter.

Caught up in her thoughts, it took a long moment to realize who else was with her daughter. Cyaryn froze, mouth slightly open, throat working for a long moment before she could speak. "N-N'myl," she stuttered out. "You're, uh... here."

I don't think there's a week that goes by where you don't see Nelryn.

'There will never be a week where I don't. A child needs a parental figure in their life.' N'myl responded, stepping into the weyr's creche, peering over the heads of children in search of his daughter. Some of the children waved to him before returning to their activities. He'd talked briefly to the other creche children, some of them were 'friends' of Nelryn and she had insisted on him knowing them. Sure visiting his daughter was routine at this point, but he enjoyed every moment he spent with his daughter. She would not grow up in the same hateful environment that Tesseth and himself had experienced. Never.

There are still some unkind people at this weyr.... Tesseth mumbled, clearly listening in to N'myl's thoughts. It was far cry from the hatred from Fort, though. The amount of spiteful dragons and riders was a grudgingly acceptable minority.

'shush, you.' His pace quickened when he spotted Nelryn, and when his daughter turned to look at him she practically bounced away from the child she was playing with and over to her father. The bluerider knelt to be more level with the growing child, gathering Nelryn up in a hug. "Hey, kid, everything going well?" to which she gave a wide smile, haphazardly brushing curly hair away from her eyes. "Yup," Nleryn replied, popping her P's, "Me an' Morosem were playin'. She's funny." N'myl blinked, trying to pair face with name before realizing that he'd never heard of her. "New friend?"

"Well...she's-" Nelyrn's head peered around her father's figure as she searched for the woman who had called her name. The voice was familiar, and once she saw who it was she made quick work to make it over to Cyraryn. "Daddy! look! Momma's home!" she practically squealed when she reached her mother, holding tight to her leg. "Do you have your own dragon now, momma?" She only briefly recalled conversations between her mother and father. Why else would she stay at Fort?! Clearly she would have to see her mother's new friend when she could. Nelryn's gaze returned to N'myl, remaining ever cheerful even though his pace was slow and slightly stiff.

N'myl stared at Cyraryn for a good, long moment. His vocabulary didn't seem to want to function properly and so the bluerider managed an awkward laugh. how charming. "Cya..." his mind was an overwhelming mix of happiness and slight suspicion, perhaps from Tesseth. They..probably had some catching up to do. "Yeah...I'm here. Wouldn't go a week without seeing Nelryn, so I was just checking in..." he cut himself off, looking at his daughter and then returning his attention to his....he wasn't even sure what relationship stamp they had right now. Too much time spent without her. "I...wasn't expecting you to be coming to Vaioa so soon..."

Wait...Cyraryn is here?! I want to see her!

'Just...uh, give us a moment, buddy..'

While the tears still lurked, waiting for her resolve to crack just the smallest bit, Cyaryn couldn’t help the grin that lit up her face as Nelryn squealed in excitement and clung to her leg. As soon as her daughter loosened her grip a little, Cya knelt down so she could see the girl on her own level. “No dragon yet, Nelryn,” she told her, a bit ruefully. “I decided that it would be better to wait for my dragon here, with you. Don’t you think? Then you can watch him or her grow up!” It wasn’t the whole truth, but hopefully it was good enough for Nelryn.

She balanced awkwardly on her knees for a long moment—Faranth, she wouldn’t want to be doing that in a few short months—before holding her arms out to her daughter for a hug. “Come here, Nel,” she invited. “I missed you so much.”

Turning her attentions back to N’myl, she mentally groaned. She really hadn’t been ready for this. She had expected to see Nelryn tonight, then spend a few days settling in before going looking for her... whatever he was now. “Right. You and me neither.” It had been a thing to come see Nelryn all the time. Never mind the fact she hadn’t seen her in almost a turn. Hopefully she could put that behind her now.

“I didn’t expect to be here either,” Cyaryn admitted. “There were some... things happening at Fort. I didn’t want to... I couldn’t be there any more. Just got in on the trade caravan a few candlemarks ago.” Jays, why had she said that? Coming by caravan would probably ring suspicious. She hadn’t been ready to see him yet; she really wasn’t ready to tell him about her ‘condition.’ He might have expected her to come here ready to make amends about what had happened. Instead she came carrying another man’s child. Fardle that thrice-scored smokeless weyrling S’leter.

She cleared her throat. “How are you? And Tesseth?” Despite the blue’s oddness, she had grown rather fond of him, eventually.

Nelryn frowned slightly when her mother told her that she didn't have a dragon yet. Cyaryn's reasoning, though, caused the child to smile once more. "...Yeah! Just like Tesseth!" She didn't actually get to see Tesseth much. Except when they came to Vaioa. She was certain that she would get to see her mother's dragon much more often! Nelryn started bouncing up and down overwhelmed with all this positive energy, "You'll get a big strong dragon and I'll be friends with it and I will help you take care of it and everything!" As she spoke the words got gradually faster until they were almost unintelligible.

When a hug was offered, she happily took it, climbing into her mother's arms while doing her best to rest her head against one of her mother's shoulder. She wasn't sure if tears came streaming down her cheeks due to excitement, happiness, or the words that came from her mother. Probably all three. "I missed you, too, Momma." she sniffled, "You're stayin' here, right? I don't have to see you go again?" the words were half-choked between tears. If she was going back...well, she'd cling to her mother so she wouldn't leave!

Things happening at Fort. If they drove her to Vaioa they were likely unhappy things. Which was later confirmed as he listened to what Cyaryn had to say. Fort wasn't pleasant for him and Tesseth, but would anybody on Fort hate Cyaryn because of her association with him? ...and why would she take the caravan when movement was as good as a trip between away? The bluerider raised an eyebrow slowly, "What was...going on? Are you all right? Me and Tesseth could have taken you over here.." Except that they never really worked out a proper form of communication and sending of it. He struggled to keep his voice less urgent for Nelryn, and was half-thankful for the rather quick change of subject. N'myl sighed, eyes flickering to their daughter to Cyaryn. "Well, not counting this odd shift in events and all, doing pretty well. Vaioa is...great. Took a bit to warm up to the change of climate, and the new wing...but nobody treats either of us like we're not meant to be dragonriders." He offered her a slightly strained smile, "Tesseth wants to see you when your schedule is free...and less filled with chaos."

Why does anyone still live in Fort? Why did they treat everyone in our family so mean?! Cyaryn doesn't deserve any of that...

'...Indoctrination, buddy, it works wonders.'

Thank faranth, the half-truth had worked. Cyaryn smiled fondly at Nelryn's enthusiastic energy. "That sounds like a plan to me," she said, though she had only really caught the first half of her daughter's sentence. It wasn't like she had family back at Fort. Nelryn was the only thing she had, and if there was anyone she wanted to have watch her dragon grow up, it was her.

A few tears slid down her cheeks as Nelryn embraced her and started sniffling. She hurriedly lifted a hand from Nelryn and swiped at her eyes, taking a few deep breaths until the threat of a full on cry had passed. "I am staying," she told her daughter firmly. "You don't have to worry about seeing me go. I'm going to live here at Vaioa with you."

Shards, N'myl had noticed her slip, and questioned it. "N-no, I'm fine," she assured him. "I didn't want to bother you, and you know how busy most of the riders at Fort are. I was a little ill when we set out, but I'm all right now." 'A little ill' wasn't really a lie--morning sickness had gotten her down for the first few days on the trade caravan. It still raised its head every so often, but not nearly as bad as it used to be.

"And I mean you know, I've never been away from Fort. Got to see everything that lies between here and there, and when I say everything I mean a lot, never realized how big Pern is until now..." She was babbling, she realized suddenly, clicking her mouth shut. She should tell him what was going on, he would know sooner or later, and it would be better to her it from her than through the grapevine. Not around Nelryn though.

"That's great," she said. Her voice was half-hearted but she was genuinely pleased for him. For having lived there all her life, it had taken an embarrassingly long time to realize what a cesspool Fort was turning in to. The blacks and graphites and their siblings, it seemed, was only a symptom of the larger problem. "I'm glad you're doing well here."

Cyaryn smiled. "Yeah, I'd like to see him too," she admitted. She glanced around for a marked candle, but didn't immediately see one. Instead she turned her gaze to Nelryn, but it was still N'myl she was addressing. "When do the little ones go to bed? I was afraid I wasn't going to make it in time." She cleared her throat. "I mean, I don't have a lot to do now, we could go see Tesseth when Nel goes to bed... if that's okay."

Nelryn's tight grip on her mother loosened when she said she was here to stay. for good. Despite Cyaryn wiping away her tears, Nelryn couldn't effectively control her stupid tearflow due to the joy she found in her mother's words. She was going to live here! and visit! And...and she would see Cyaryn's dragon grow great and strong and whatever else dragons did that was probably awe-inspiring. "Good, 'cuz I don't wanna see you go again."

N'myl listened to Cyaryn as she spoke, growing slightly concerned when she stated she was ill and then slightly more so as she dragged the explanation on. "A...little ill?" The bluerider asked, tilting his head. He didn't recall the last time Cya had rambled on like that. Something was probably wrong to make Cyaryn take the long scenic route to...realize how big pern really is. That was likely a conversation for later, confirmed when the topic was changed.

"Yes...and, uh...so are the others. Uhm, Tesseth's brothers and sisters." He didn't see them as often as he did in weyrlinghood, but he ran into a few of them enough to keep tabs on them. Those were some of the few dragon Tesseth trusted.

The bluerider's mind briefly went blank at Cyaryn's question. He usually left before Nelryn went to bed but he'd came here later than he usually did. It was probably only a candlemark or two away. "...Soon. No more than two candlemarks, I think." Hopefully that was a good enough answer. He gave a quick glance to his daughter, smiling. "That sounds like a plan. With luck Tesseth might actually let you touch him." His tone was deliberately teasing, and N'myl almost laughed at the mental snort from his blue.

Cyaryn is one of the few...not weird people on Pern. She would never hurt me. I hope.

'Oh, no she wouldn't. Why would she hurt you when she can just target me? It's much easier and I wouldn't complain as much.'

Shard it. How was she supposed to keep from crying when her daughter was bursting into tears right in front of her? Cyaryn dabbed at Nelryn's eyes and took a long sniff herself. "Well, I don't want to go, so I guess it all works out," she teased gently. Whatever doubts she might have had about coming to Vaioa were swiftly evaporating, she realized.

She waved her hand at N'myl's concern. "Stomach bug, you know. Wouldn't want my lunch ending up on Tesseth or some other dragon's neck, would we?" More half truths, she thought, absently chewing on her lip as she debated telling the bluerider the whole truth. Well, she had until Nelryn went to bed to figure that out.

"Well I'm glad to hear you've all settled in." She had a few people in that class that she had been friends with in candidacy. "I'll have to catch up with some of you that I knew."

They made some more awkward small talk, but most of Cyaryn's focus was on Nelryn, catching up on all that had happened in her daughter's life in her absence. She spent a lot of the time kicking herself for being stubborn, for missing out on this crucial part of her young daughter's life. The time flew by and before she knew it an older woman was shooing the children to bed, showing their visitors to the door.

Cyaryn found herself back out in the unfamiliar weyrbowl, scanning the side for a familiar periwinkle hide. "Where's Tesseth?" she asked when she hadn't seen him after a long moment. Not that it was surprising, when the light had faded and she had no idea where to look.

She glanced sideways and N'myl, feeling a pang of sorrow for a similar scene, when they were both candidates, when she had had a far more optimistic view of her future with a boy named Nelmayl. She had, she admitted to herself, cared for Nelmayl deeply. N'myl, on the other hand, was something she was still figuring out.

"Look, I... There's something I need to tell you." She swallowed hard and glanced away. "And I understand if you uh... wish to limit your contact with me. I am entirely capable of keeping things professional, for Nelryn's sake."
