Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Aniese smiled and nodded as Nalenthi made an appearance. As the first one to appear, that indicated punctuality, but Aniese also knew that the girl had gotten into a spat and served out a minor punishment, so she was something of a mystery. Was her punctuality an attempt to prove herself, to show her supervisors that she could do better? Or just coincidence? It was hard to tell. Aniese always liked to see a bit of spirit in the candidates; it usually led to spirited and fiercely loyal riders. Not always, though. And if it turned into a violent streak, then they'd have trouble on their hands. Still, one incident did not condemn a candidate, and Aniese was willing to overlook it. She would have to keep an eye on her and see what developments came of it.

The rest turned up quickly though; fairly punctual, all of them. Anieze smiled and greeted Viviette warmly. She knew the candidate from her time in the infirmary, albeit not particularly closely. She also remembered seeing her in the group that had arrived to touch the golden egg that had hatched Vereth. This would be the candidate's second time in this particular lesson. She must find it boring. Zahrai received a polite greeting as well.

Aniese smiled and returned Bronnia's greeting as the girl arrived. The candidates were beginning to socialize, which was always an encouraging sign for Aniese, and one she watched with great interest. She was fascinated by group dynamics, and liked to see who interacted with who, if anybody got left out, and how relationships played out. In short order, Ilemin, Ashwyn, and Thalia arrived, followed by Amarisha and Karaelyn. Aniese exchanged polite greetings with them all, waited for the last few stragglers to find a seat in the room, and then stepped forward, trying to ignore the subdued mood and looks some of the candidates shot her. Was it resentfulness? Or just thoughtfulness? She knew that their last lesson had not exactly been a cheerful one, but she could not regret what she had said. Dragonriding was a serious business, and it was better that they received a new crop of weyrlings who were mentally prepared, rather than those who had been thrust into it without really understanding what would be expected of them.

Today's lesson would be much the same.

Aniese cleared her throat and then offered a warm smile, not that it would lessen the blow of her words, probably. She wondered if it was paranoia that she was reading resentment in some of the candidates, or if they actually did not want to be there and did not want to hear what she had to say.

"Hello, candidates. Thank you for giving me your time today." Again. Oh well, might as well address the elephant in the room. So to speak. "I take it, by your presence, that you took to heart the words I had for you last time, about the seriousness of your commitment." She looked at Zahrai, then Bronnia. "I'm proud of you, for taking it seriously, and for choosing to continue with candidacy. Thinking through your choices and choosing consciously is brave, and bravery is highly valued at Vaioa." She now looked at Ashwyn and smiled again. "Needless to say, your bravery in making such a choice indicates that you may, indeed, be able to withstand the rigors of dragonriding. I would be proud to ride alongside all of you."

Again she scanned the crowd, looking for a face that seemed frightened, even trepidatious. But she only saw alertness, interest, and even some slightly concealed disdain. Interesting. Thalia and Nalenthi might be interested in the proposition at the end of this lecture. But somehow, Aniese doubted it. Girls did not like to recuse themselves from clutches, just in case a flaming fighter happened to hatch for them.

"The reason I have called you here, apart from the male candidates, is because the clutch at Cove Weyrhold contains a Gold Egg." The ripple, small but noticeable, in the candidates. So they had guessed it, then. Well, it was hard not to, when there was a Gold egg on the sands and a lesson for just female candidates was called. "This means that there is a distinct possibility that any one of you might Impress to the dragonet who hatches from that egg. So I would like to impress upon you the responsibilities and the life that await you, should such events come to pass."

Aniese took a deep breath before continuing. "No matter the color of your dragon's hide, you will be expected to place the needs of your dragon and the needs of the Weyr above your own. Actually, the nature of your bond will render any other behavior nearly impossible. When you can feel hunger and discomfort as strongly as if you were experiencing them yourselves... not to mention the intricacies of sharing your mind with another creature... it seems impossible for a rider to neglect their dragon. But that is not all. More importantly, you must obey your duty to the Weyr, and you will be bound by an oath that will mark your passage from Weyrlinghood into adult, mature rider. When Thread falls, we must rise to fight it, or contribute in whatever way we can-- whether Infirmary or Lower Caverns." Her eyes flicked to Viviette and she smiled slightly. "Your time, your schedule, becomes less about your needs and more about the Weyr's and your dragon's needs. You will find that you have little to no time to spend on yourself, some days. And you will not have a choice in the matter. You will lose a great deal of, if not all of, your autonomy. You will be expected to adhere to certain codes of behavior, and you will be expected to commit your life to the service of the Weyr.

"But you know this, I believe. Or you have been thinking about it recently. This is the common fate of every rider, no matter when or how she Impresses. Impressing a Gold is yet again different.

"You can expect to experience the same sacrifices that any rider would experience; little to no autonomy and freedom. Your life will belong to the Weyr. But for Queenriders, that sacrifice is twofold. Your responsibilities run far deeper, due to your position on Weyr Council. Most riders have free time in the evening, but when you are a Queen rider, you have little and less of this. For one, you act as a representative of Vaioa to the other Holds and Weyrs of Pern. You may, at times, find yourself engaged in dull and pointless politics, simply because of your rank. More often your responsibilities include all manner of administrative affairs; correspondence; hosting visitors to the Weyr; working in the Records or keeping new Records yourself; working with the Headwoman; stocking, taking inventory, and maintaining familiarity with the Weyr Stores; assisting in the Kitchens, Lower Caverns, and Infirmary as needed. Your duties can include, in short, anything and everything. You help the Weyr run smoothly, you perform maintenance as needed, and you do it all in your supposed 'free' time as much as needed, which is most of the time. In other words, you do not have free time to yourself, save on very rare occasions. It is not a pleasure flight. Riding a ranker is not your ticket to power and influence. You will have extensive training, and then you will work. You will work until you are old, and then you will continue to work. This is the burden of being a Queenrider. It is a life of responsibility, and it is something that you must each take seriously. You could be called upon to arbitrate disputes within the Weyr, or even when out-Weyr. You might have to represent Vaioa diplomatically while visiting another Weyr. You might have to negotiate with Holders."

She took a deep breath, and looked at Amarisha, then Ilemin. "I don’t say this to scare you or discourage you. I simply want to impress upon each and every one of you that whatever ideas you have about riding a Gold, whatever preconceived notions you might have about how wonderful and desirable and powerful it will make you… you do not understand how far from the truth those ideas are. Think about what I have told you. Think about it now, think about it this week, think about it until the Hatching comes. And be honest with yourself. Do you really want a future where you do not have the luxury of spending time on yourself? Because if you Impress a Gold, and you continue to lead a selfish lifestyle, then your dragon will suffer and the Weyr will suffer, and that is not an option. Not everybody is capable of the level of sacrifice inherent in riding a Gold, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you want a shiny bauble, then I suggest you go purchase a gold firelizard egg. A gold dragon is the furthest thing from a life of luxury, and I want each and every one of you to understand that. If you feel that this life is not for you, or that you are incapable of meeting the responsibilities required, I suggest that you recuse yourself from this hatching. There is no shame in stepping out, just this time, and it will not affect your ability to stand in future hatchings."

And if that wasn't serious, then Aniese didn't know what was. She was coming to despair of always bringing the conversation back to the serious point; to prick the candidates' bubbles of joy and hope. Or, at least, that was how it felt. She didn't want to be widely regarded as a wet blanket, but if that was the cost of ensuring that the candidates were fully prepared, then she supposed she would accept it with what dignity she could muster. She allowed a smile to return to her face. Serious topic or not, it was of course necessary to address, for the same reason that the previous lesson had been. It was important for candidates to be informed, to think seriously about their options, and to take an active hand in steering their future. Such activities suggested promise for future riders, anyway. "If you have any questions, or want to talk, I am here for the duration of the lesson, and I am happy to talk with you later as well. Your candidate masters are also available, at any time."

Viviette: Tag Ashwyn, Amarisha, Open

“I'm alright.” Viviette gave Ashwyn a warm look, she appreciated the concern, but she really was fine. “This was all expected, Zhiarth's wellbeing is more important then us any day of the sevenday. Hello Amarisha!” The candidate's energy was a little overwhelming compared to the rest of the participants in the lesson, and she noted the prodding at Ashwyn with interest. Was Ashwyn an aspiring queenrider? As much time as Viviette had spent around her brother's friends, she'd never delved into their candidacy goals, it was weird enough being around R'ken's lovers, nice though they may be. If R'ken could get bronze though, why not his, uh, girlfriend (was girlfriend the word? Weyrs were weird sometimes) gold? Then the lesson began, and she settled in to to listen closely.

Viviette nodded along subconsciously with Aniese's first words, it was a familiar lecture, though it had been... two turns ago? Yes, two turns ago that she'd last heard it. That had been her first clutch, and she'd been so intimidated that the latter portion of the lesson had flown over her head without landing. Now, it absorbed better, and the leftover impressions from that first speech solidified. Being a gold rider sounded like the most exhausting job on Pern, and the benefits would be the same as Impressing any other color of dragon, a life partner forever. Not that that wasn't a fantastic benefit, but a dragon was a dragon no matter what shade.

A small blush rose on her cheeks when the weyrwoman smiled at her as she spoke of the infirmary, so she had been noticed there. It was nice to be recognized for her efforts. When things concluded Viviette's mind had no been changed. Someone else could manage the weyr, and she'd stick to what she was good at. If Ashwyn wanted to be that someone, all the better for her. Anyone who could handle R'ken and keep him out of trouble could surely handle a weyr.

Zahrai: Tag Aniese, Open

“Hey! Glad to see someone will stand my presence.” Zahrai joked, eyeing Nalenthi, who was very pointedly not looking in her direction. “I think we're being prepared for the hatching of the queen today, though considering there's like 25 of us and one of her, the chances aren't high for anybody.” Not that this meant she wouldn't listen with less intensity. Aniese's last lecture, while morbid in parts, had been highly informative. Zahrai understood the value of information, not the kind from hides but the kind gained from insights of individuals. This would be a valuable peek into how the place she was setting herself up to stay at worked.

Despite the lack of appeal the title held for her, she found herself intrigued by the idea of the weyrwoman's duties. Traveling to holds or other weyrs, striking deals, working to get people to do what they needed without causing conflict, all sounded like relatively interesting things. The parts about 'no free time' or 'can't live selfishly' held less impact in the face of a life that would use brain more then brawn, as Zahrai had never been a big fan of brawn. A great deal of the rest of Aniese's words reflected what people kept telling her, and the last lesson she'd led. Zahrai tapped her foot as she mulled over the conflict of interests within her. There was A ) Keeping her freedom and doing what she wanted, or B ) Having a stable home, learn actual skills (or somehow use the ones she already had), maybe people would stop punching her eventually???

She'd started off thoroughly in the camp of A, but B was becoming more appealing over time. Especially the last part of it. Maybe this was part of the 'growing up' thing she heard people talk about. Plus, if Southern was teaching her anything, it was that being a rider didn't mean being dull, no matter what color they rode. As Aniese dismissed them to either ask questions or converse on their own, Zahrai stretched and looked to Nalidy for her input. “What do you think? Are you raring for the life of a gold rider?” She wasn't sure if she had anything to ask Aniese yet, other then wondering exactly what kind of training they received.

Nalenthi, Tag: Bronnia, Open

It turned out Aniese's speech was on the topic of riding a gold and delineating the responsibilities of a Weyrwoman. Nalenthi tried to listen politely, but her face was likely giving away her true thoughts. Impressing a gold sounded every bit as bad as she'd imagined. Impressing a dragon was supposed to mean freedom, the freedom to go where ever you wanted and freedom from the oppressive atmosphere of a hold. To have a life choked by responsibilities, to have no time to oneself, well, it did give Nalenthi pause. Did she want to recuse this Hatching? There would be others, certainly ones with no gold egg since those were so rarely laid. She was young and in no danger of aging out any time soon.

Nah, Nalenthi decided quickly. One, she was not going to run from her first Hatching, what kind of wouldbe dragonrider would run from a baby dragon? Two, Nalenthi was in no danger of Impressing a gold. If that little queen even looked at her, it would probably be the one to run away. She was utterly unsuitable for the position and that dragonet would know it instantly. All Nalenthi had to do was stand as far back from the gold egg as was allowed and think more encouraging thoughts to whatever hatched out of the remaining three. Greens and blues dominated most clutches, so there was no reason to doubt that some of those would also hatch, possibly even Nalenthi's. She wasn't going to abandon her potential partner out of fear!

Decision made, Nalenthi turned to Bronnia, curious to see what the other girl made of Aniese's speech. "Well, did that change your mind about Standing? Goldriding sounds exhausting if you ask me."

The lesson was not nearly as bad as the air in the room would suggest- in fact, Ilemin found it rather fascinating. It made sense that being a dragonrider would involve an immense amount of hard work; already, far before she would likely Impress, Ilemin found new callouses on her palms. The manual labor proved to be moderately spirit destroying, but to work for a purpose? To work to provide for your own dragon? That made it seem okay, and she was secretly more than a little pleased that problem areas of her body were becoming less squishy. It was... rewarding, which she had not expected. But still, the only dung she would like to shovel out in the future would be that belonging to her dragon.

It was also far more political than Ilemin had expected. Again, it made sense that it would be, for what was a Weyr if not an enormous political organization? But it was difficult to think of it that way, and she fought her own prejudices, formed by living only amongst those the Weyr protected. Some holders certainly believed that dragonriders lived relatively hedonistic lives, taxing the poor holders in exchange for occasional work fighting Thread. Ilemin mentally snorted; if they could see how much work was really involved, their opinions would change quickly. To Impress a gold would mean dealing with those attitudes day in and day out, on top of the every day problems that would crop up in a Weyr. To think she thought she had significant responsibility before- leading groups of her fellow apprentices in a simple task could not even compare to leading a Weyr, or helping to lead one. Yet it was fascinating, a new avenue open to her that she had never considered before. It would certainly provide the mental challenges she longed for.

What did she want, in the end? It was still too difficult to say. Ilemin knew now that she wanted to Impress, but to want a specific color seemed to be inviting disaster on her own head, as if the simple act of wishing would turn any potential dragons away from her. She was still very much the new woman here, and watching her fellow Candidates chatter only reinforced that feeling. They, at least, seemed to know what they wanted, be it one way or another, and she both admired and was jealous of that certainty.

"How would duties as the junior most goldrider differ? If you should Impress gold, do you also get additional lessons on how to handle the political duties?" It would be useless if they didn't teach you how to handle all the new responsibility, how to delegate and when to intervene- and when to stand aside, and let parties sort it out themselves. "Do Weyrborn women have an advantage, because they know the general climate of a Weyr better?" Again, it made sense, but Ilemin was swiftly learning that dragons did not necessarily do things logically.

Haely, Open, tag Aniese

Haely had been excited to hear the call for a girls-only meeting--a special one-on-one with one of the Goldriders (probably the one who had spoken to them before, she assumed) just for them, to share some of her knowledge and wisdom and excitement for dragonriding! The other girls seemed equally excited. Well, most of them did, anyway. There was chatting and idle gossip, a few laughs being shared between friends, and high curiosity prevailing over the scene.

Naturally, since it was a girls-only meeting, she had impressed upon Puck that he must remain outside with the other boys. The bronze was incredibly disappointed by this, and she could practically hear him peeping his dissent from the rocky walls--but Feran primped and preened, flipping her wings and relishing the alone time she got to spend with her Person.

When the Goldrider began speaking, however, Haely promptly felt all the joy being sucked out of the room once again. She let out a sigh, leaning against the wall as the woman spoke about duty, about how hard it was to ride gold, about how a dragonrider's life was service... blah blah blah blah blah. Things she already knew! This wasn't wisdom! This was a lecture--and not the good kind, either! No gold was going to pick her, anyway. She was too little, too weird, too different. Gold dragons didn't pick girls like her. The little baby would pick someone tall and elegant, like they always did. Someone who looked like a leader, like this Goldrider here. She wasn't going to pick one of the scrawniest, skinniest kids with two differently colored eyes and baby teeth at odds with her grown-up teeth.

Still, she snorted at the idea of Not Standing for this clutch. She'd be there--it'd be rude not to, after all, when these babies were just as worthy of a full audience after what they had been through!--even if there wasn't a Thread's chance in the ocean that the little baby would ever wander out of her egg and over to her. She had no problem with service. She had no problem with duty. But she wasn't what a gold was looking for--she was like her mother, and her sister. Grey and black. Fighters. Movers. Doers.

Feran peeped softly at the train of thought, and Haely slid her eyes over to the dark gold creature, running her fingers along her firelizard's spine and smiling as she crooned with pleasure. The thought of a gold dragon doing healing duty was patently ridiculous, anyway... or was it? Golds seemed to be able to do things other dragons couldn't. What if a gold was the perfect dragon for healing work, and nobody knew because they were always with the others out in the sky? Why did they have to do it like that? Why not have a gold resident healer dragon during Threadfall? Imagine the lives that could be saved!

With that thought in mind, Haely raised her hand, glancing at others that were asking questions. She didn't want to voice her thoughts in front of everyone just now. Maybe she shouldn't even voice them to this woman at all. But... well, she was curious!

Ashwyn - Tag Viviette, Amarisha, Open:

Ashwyn nodded, fully agreeing with Viviette. "No doubt about that. The poor girl... Do you think that she'll be somewhat better by the Hatching?" Ashwyn had heard stories about golds that held on until their eggs cracked, and then just...faded away. Disappeared into Between as their bodies succumbed to exhaustion. Those golds are true mothers. Prolonging their suffering to see their babies Impress. Ashwyn liked to think that she would do that, were she a gold and Tara her hatchling, but...how could she even begin to guess what that sort of pain was like? Poor Zhiarth.

Amarisha's familiar, too-cheerful voice made her look up, and Ash smiled despite herself at her friend's exuberance. Only Ama... No one else was making the effort to be anything other than sad or sullen, but then, Amarisha had always been...extra positive. "Hello, Ama." Ashwyn nodded to the other woman, clicking her tongue at Jaro and scratching under her chin. She scoffed at Ama's comment, being of the personal opinion that the less crowded, the better. Boys had a tendency to leer, and she knew that they judged her scars. Not that she cared, of course. The Jasperteers were the only men whose opinions mattered to her, in the end.

A faint blush dusted the candidate's cheeks when Amarisha teased her, and she half-heartedly swatted at her elbow. "Hush, you. Pay attention," she muttered, facing Aniese as the weyrwoman began the day's lecture. She was surprised that the goldrider glanced her way as she spoke of the girls' bravery for continuing to Stand, and sat up straighter. And then, as the lecture unfolded, she felt herself struggling to maintain that rigid, disciplined posture. She had heard this lecture before, the last time there had been a queen egg on the Sands. Yet, just like last time, it sent doubts spiraling down into her brain. She'd always known what the life of a weyrwoman was all about. Den'eld had told her--repeatedly--after she'd first declared that she wanted to Impress to a gold.

But hearing it from a weyrwoman herself was always different than hearing it from her adopted father. There was a reality there, a reality borne from the experience of the speaker. You will lose your life. Not literally. No, whomever Impressed to that gold would still live, but the burden would be crushing. You can't handle that, Ashwyn. She thought of R'ken, a wingthird, a bronzerider. T'vir, a 'second and copperrider. Two riders with positions of rank and metallic dragons. They seemed happy enough. They had time for their families, their children. You would, too. Not as much as you'd like. But Faranth, it'd be worth it. You could help...you could do something meaningful...

You can do this.

Thalia - Tag Taia, Open:

Thalia didn't look up as the seat next to her was filled. Her peripheral vision told her who it was; Taia was the only freakishly tall blonde she knew. Besides, no one, not even Thalia's prank buddies, would take the seat next to her. The seats on either side of Thalia were always reserved for Taia and Thoia. Even if Thoia was more likely to go sit next to her goody-two-shoes friends. Thalia liked to keep the seat open just in case. Lazily lolling her head to the side to regard her best friend, Thalia arched an eyebrow. "Did you just poke me?" she hissed, a sullen quality to her voice. Her eyes weren't nearly as bright, and it wasn't the usual lesson boredom that dimmed them today.

She shot a resentful look towards Aniese when the goldrider chose that moment to clear her throat. As the lecture began, Thalia gazed down at her hands, idly inspecting and picking at her nails. One ankle was draped over the opposite thigh, and she lounged in her seat in the most un-weyrwoman-like manner possible. All the better to remind their instructor that she did not belong there, and so she did not need to pay attention. However, she couldn't just turn off her ears. She heard every word Aniese said, and honestly, it made her feel a little bad for whatever poor sap Impressed to Zhiarth's queen daughter.

Aniese's offer at the end of her long-winded, utterly boring lecture made Thalia's eyes snap up. Sit out? She's talking to people like you, numbskull. The woman snorted audibly. As if she would sit out. She knew that no gold would choose her. No garnet. There was nothing to fear. She was not going to sit out of a Hatching.

Aniese nodded at Ilemin's questions. "Seniority, at least here at Vaioa, makes very little difference." A smirk flashed across her lips as she thought of Fort and High Reaches, and the aneurysms she'd be causing if they heard this lesson. To some people, seniority was clearly everything. "All major decisions are put to collective vote on Weyr Council, which is composed of all ranking riders in the Weyr. There is very little that the Seniors do without feedback and support. As such, even the most junior Goldrider has a say on matters, ranging from diplomatic strategy to wing rotation."

The question about training made her smile, simply because she recalled how unprepared she'd been for those additional lessons. "Yes, absolutely, a queenrider does receive additional lessons beyond the standard lessons of Weyrlinghood. More detailed lessons about diplomacy, for a start. Familiarizing you with the duties required to run a Weyr, until you are both sick of numbers and figures and can do them in your sleep. Records until your hand cramps, to improve your writing and literacy. Some of it is interesting, and some of it is dreadfully dull, but all of it will prepare you to take on your role properly once you graduate." Of course, all the training in the world couldn't make up for experience, but she didn't need to tell the girls that. What mattered was that they'd be well trained; the experience needed to temper their training would come, with time.

"Being Weyrborn does not give you an advantage over those candidates who are not. There are some riders who speculate that, in fact, Golds prefer Holdborn girls. Analysis of the data we have on record indicates, though, that it's just as random as any other Impression statistic. There doesn't seem to be any clear indication of what makes a candidate more likely to Impress a queen." Which is precisely why recusals were essential, for those girls who knew beyond a doubt that they would not be suited for it. Her eyes swept over Thalia, who was shooting her a resentful look, sprawling and ignoring the words. Well, whether it was a general attitude problem or a problem with this particular lesson, Aniese hoped that that one figured out the recusal situation sooner rather than later.

When Haely raised her hand, Aniese nodded at her. "Yes, did you have a question?" With the amount of low chatter that was occurring in the room right then, it seemed unlikely that the candidate would be speaking for an audience.

Haely listened as the goldrider answered some of the other girls' questions. Seniority was something she had never even considered before--she barely knew the meaning of the word, which she found mildly disturbing, but... well, if it wasn't a big deal at Vaioa, maybe that wasn't really a bad thing?

Extra training and lessons sounded kind of exciting, if only because it was more for her to learn about Pern. It wasn't really what she wanted to learn, though; she was more interested in Healing and some of the Crafts than she was in diplomacy and dealing with Holders and trying to get along with people and their economies. Still, it didn't sound like a terrible deal... tolerable, at least. Then there was the issue of Holdborn versus Weyrborn, and Haely rolled her eyes. Like dragons really cared where someone came from! They only cared what was in their hearts and minds, not where their parents had decided to give birth to them. How stupid.

But then Aniese was looking at her, and Haely jumped slightly at the attention. Feran peeped reassuringly, and Puck let out an almost laughing chatter and flipped up his wings as he turned wheeling eyes onto the goldrider. She shifted in her seat, then crinkled her nose as she looked around at the other girls.

"Um, well... I was just thinking. Gold dragons are Queens, right? I mean, obviously. And they talk to all the other dragons and can kind of order them around--not control them, but... dragons tend to do what a gold says, right? So, um... why couldn't a gold be a sort of... like... resident Healerdragon, just during a Fall, if they were to Impress? Instead of, y'know, going out with the Wings? Wouldn't it help if there was a gold talking to everybody to help keep them calm and make them feel safe? Or, um... well, I guess they do that out in the sky, too, it just... seems like... I dunno, maybe it's a stupid question," she muttered, sinking lower in her chair.

There were just so many possibilities! Why did things have to be the way they were? They could do so much and did so little because of what they were told they had to do! It didn't seem fair--even if she was one of those girls who would never get a gold in a million years.

"Um... nevermind," she said, looking away as her firelizards snuggled against her body with soft peeping noises. She then paused, looked back at Aniese, and asked, more earnestly: "Do you have to have help, oiling and washing your dragon, since she's so much bigger than the other colors? Does she still need oiling and washing every day, like the new hatchlings do? That'd be a real job and a half!"

Aniese: Tag Haely

Aniese tilted her head slightly, listening to the girl's question in its entirety. She seemed uncertain and self-conscious, and that was reinforced when she fell silent and sank low in her chair, before trying to quickly negate the train of thought she had just finished. She followed it up with a second question, as if to cover up the first one, but Aniese was not so easily dissuaded, not when the question was as intriguing as this one. Had Haely just come up with it on her own? Likely, based on the halting way she'd spoken. it certainly was interesting, to say the least. The girl seemed to have a curious mind, if she was brainstorming innovations. Aniese would have to keep an eye on this one.

Despite Haely's attempt to change the conversation, Aniese did not ignore her first question. Instead, she said thoughtfully, "Queen dragons do generally exert control over panicking and injured dragons, yes. Threadfall is just about the only time they do this. It stands to reason that, for the most part, all of the dragons in the Weyr are bound to listen to a Queen's authority under any circumstance... but I have never heard a Queen exert this authority, save for a situation involving injuries and the Infirmary. I do not know if it is because they do not want to abuse it, or if it simply emerges when a dragon is panicking. But at any rate, it is a response that happens when the Healers need help."

The other part of her question, that was interesting. Aniese spoke more haltingly there. "It is possible... that a Queen dragon could stay at the Infirmary during Threadfall, to help control the chaos that results from injured dragons. It is more common for Queens to perform this duty when they are grounded due to being gravid, or when they return after Fall is over. Usually, it is not desirable for an able-bodied dragon to sit out of Threadfall. However... if the wings' numbers were healthy otherwise... taking one dragon out of Fall would not necessarily harm the outcome. I don't believe it has ever been tried before, to my knowledge."

Aniese smiled at Haely's latter question. "I don't have to wash and oil Rezeirth every day," she replied with a grin. "She's much too big for that. Once weyrlings stop growing, their bathing needs become less frequent, more like every two or three days. Of course, proper hygiene is essential to your dragon's health, so that their hide can withstand Between as it was meant to. But it is while they are growing that their hide is most prone to cracking, which is why the daily washing and oiling is needed. I sometimes have help, if there is ever someone who wants to help, but most often, it's just me and my firelizards." Aniese smiled at this thought. It was a chore, to be sure, but times spent caring for Rezeirth were some of the fondest times she could think of.

Haely blinked when the woman actually started answering her first question--and didn't shoot it down in the least, or seem to regard it as foolish in any way. She leaned forward in her seat, head tilted to one side, as she listened attentively to what the older woman had to say. The control only came out during Threadfall? How? Why? To prevent it from being abused, or because of circumstance, she said... interesting. She glanced briefly at Feran, wondering about tests she could possibly perform on the small scale, but... firelizards were so flighty, anyway. The gold peeped softly at her in response, seeming to agree, and Haely returned her thoughts to the matter at hand.

Here, she tilted her head the other way. The woman seemed to... actually consider what she had said. A grin tugged at the corner of her lips. Something that had never been tried, but if the wings were full and healthy enough... Maybe one of the goldriders would try it sometime? Maybe it could change things, help Threadfall be less frightening in the Infirmary? And if one goldrider was amenable to thinking about that sort of change, what else would some of the others be willing to think about? Maybe it was just that nobody had ever suggested it before, and not that it was frowned upon? She'd definitely been given a lot to ponder.

"Th-Thank you," she said after a moment. "I just thought it was worth, um... thinking about."

She then laughed when Aniese answered her second question; no, she didn't have to clean and oil her gigantic dragon every single day. That would've been awful! But, well... usually she did have to do it herself. Though she supposed it wasn't so bad, just getting to spend time with your favorite pet--or friend, she guessed--one-on-one, even if it did take hours and hours.

"Well, if you ever need somebody to help clean, you can ask me," she said, only to crinkle her nose when she realized it sounded an awful lot like brown-nosing. "Um... just because I really haven't seen a gold outside of Touchings and Hatchings. I want to know what they're like when they're not on eggs and being all... um... broody, y'know?"

Though, if she were really thinking about it... why not find some way to rig up a system with the help of some smiths that would make the whole process a lot easier? Some of the Lord Holders had very fancy baths, she knew--why not take the same basic mechanics and apply it to the dragon baths? Some pulleys, some pipes... She tapped her lips and leaned back in her seat again, wondering just how feasible any of it would be in the underground pools.
