Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

(This candidate lesson is a mandatory lesson for all current female candidates.)

The announcement came early that morning, like something of a bomb for many of the candidates.

There is to be no touching of Zhiarth's eggs.

But really, Aniese thought with some exasperation, what did the candidates expect? After all that Zhiarth had been through, how could any of them still have the nerve to hope to be allowed onto the sands? The Gold was apparently still recovering from the attack, and it was a very slow process by all accounts. The last thing she needed was the stress of having a group of candidates present. Not to mention the logistics... Having well over twenty candidates crawling the sands and splitting the attention of a mere four eggs did not bode well. The ratio of hands to eggs was much too high. Aniese did not want to take any chances-- if ever there was a scenario where accidents might happen on the Sands, that was it. She privately agreed very strongly with the Southern Council's decision. Very wise.

A lilting chuckle entered her mind. I suspect that not all of the candidates will see it that way, Rezeirth said, finishing on a hum that blossomed into laughter.

Aniese sighed. Why are you so cheerful?

No reason.

But as Aniese paced in the spare room in the Lower Caverns, she suspected that her dragon was so amused by the discomfort she felt as she looked over the empty classroom.

Well, there was no getting around it. This particular duty was one that Aniese did not enjoy. She understood its importance, certainly; there was no arguing that, and so she did it without complaint. But it made her uncomfortable. Maybe it was because she herself had once been so blind and foolish... Or maybe it was just how uncomfortable she felt, knowing that there were always a handful of girls who thought that no dragons were worth Impressing unless they were Gold. That stuck in her head and rattled her, then incensed her. But she would not be angry, not outwardly. There was no use in getting angry at candidates who were just as likely to drop out of candidacy once they realized it wasn't a good fit for them.

Still, it was time. The girls had been alerted that morning, the same time of the other announcement, that their afternoon lesson would be in the spare room in the Caverns. Aniese smirked as she remembered the last lesson she had given them. A sobering one, to say the least. Perhaps some of them would find this one in the same vein.

Why is it that I'm constantly giving the candidates bad news and bringing the mood down?

Rezeirth chortled. Because joy comes so easily to you? She opined sarcastically, then chortled again.

Nalenthi, Tag Open

Nalenthi was having a bad day. First, there had been the announcement that the Candidates wouldn't be allowed to to touch the eggs prior to the Hatching. This wasn't surprising to the girl and she could guess the reasons for the decision, having been chased away from a nest by an angry gold flitter not that long ago. Dragons were suppose to be more...reasonable about these things, but getting attacked by a giant Thing and having most of your clutch destroyed would likely make anyone a little unreasonable, to say the least. So the announcement really only served to poke at Nalenthi's underlying sadness and more readily apparent anger over the whole incident. She'd never even managed to get a look at the eggs before most of them were gone, courtesy of some spinners and then the Thing.

The second issue that marred this otherwise beautiful day was topic of the lesson scheduled for that afternoon. Nalenthi had no problems with Weyrwoman Aniese, but the woman tended to bring up uncomfortable subjects, if the first lesson the girl had attended was anything to go by. This lesson would probably prove to be no different, considering it likely concerned the queen egg that had somehow managed to survive. The lesson was restricted to female candidates only, so what else could it be about? When Nalenthi pictured herself with a dragon, it was a flaming beast, and they'd fight in the regular wings. The idea of flying a gold in the slow and low queen's wing, combined with all the responsibilities of a weyrwoman was the total antithesis of the girl's dreams. Impressing a gold would be a total nightmare.

Nalenthi thought back to her conversation with Oana, on what dragons looked for in a person. If any dragon was like Aunt Telia, it'd be surely be a gold, so she should be safely ignored when the dragonet made her decision. So this lesson was just a waste of time for Nalenthi, a 'fact' that made her want to skip. It was too late to back out however, as the girl had reached the entrance to the designated cavern. Besides, she was still on thin ice for punching Zahrai, so not attending this was not an option. Nalenthi sighed and walked into the room. "Weryrwoman," the girl offered with a respectful nod. She looked around the room to see if there was anyone friendly to stand next to, only then realizing she was the first one there. Great. Now it looked like she was eager to be here.

“So no touching?” Zahrai asked Viviette casually, somehow they'd ended up walking near each other towards the site of the lesson, and she knew the dark-haired candidate had significantly more information about the southern events then she did. A side effect of the different crowds they ran in, and of Viviette's direct involvement. The announcement about the lack of touching had been public, but she might know more about why, and Zahrai was curious.

“Not with this clutch.” Viviette confirmed, far more relaxed about the lack of traditional 'get to know the eggs' experience then many of her compatriots. Of course, she'd seen the queen, and the crushed eggs, so Zahrai bet that Viviette had known since that night that Zhiarth wouldn't be letting anyone near her eggs until they were ready to burst. “It's a good thing, I think. With so many candidates Zhiarth might have a panic attack if she lost sight of her eggs.”

“Huh.” Zahrai made a thoughtful sound, and her respect for Viviette went up a few points. She'd really thought out the ramifications of the attack beyond just 'less eggs for us'. Zahrai had too, but mostly she'd been watching for Igen to retaliate somehow, maybe try to steal the eggs? A queen egg to replace the hurt queen, it made sense to her. Nothing had happened yet though, so the weyrs proved her suspicious attitude wrong again.

“This must be the lesson about the shiny butt from this clutch, with only us girls having been invited. Probably a lot of talk about responsibility. I'm not sure how it could be any worse then the lecture Aniese gave us before.” Zahrai chuckled grimly, that lesson had been hard to digest, she'd thought on it for days after the fact. In the end she'd stuck around, but it had been with a more serious tone then her initial entry into candidacy, which had mostly been an escape from the weavers.

Viviette privately agreed with Zahrai, though she didn't say so. The older candidate was much more blasé about the situation, while Viviette was nervous and wanted it all to be over with. The sooner the hatching occurred, the better. Perhaps part of her nervousness was that a gold didn't appeal to her. Weyrwoman, even junior ones, seemed busy with many things, and now that she'd figured out what she wanted to learn was serious healing...well, she probably didn't need to worry. The girls' side of the barracks was overflowing, the little gold would have many choices.

The pair separated when they entered the classroom, with Zahrai finding her normal place towards the front and Viviette situating herself further towards a side-wall. Viviette waved at Nalenthi, and smiled at their to-be teacher. "Good day weyrwoman Aniese."

Zahrai took longer to greet the gold rider, taking in the woman's posture and expression. Did she not want to be here either? Maybe she didn't think this bunch had any suitable queen riders among them. Hah, wouldn't that punch a hole in a few egos.

"No touching?" Bronnia actually pondered aloud when the announcement was made to all the Candidates that morning. She'd never heard of a clutch that went without a touching... but then again, she'd never heard of a clutch that was nearly entirely wiped out by a massive monster thing in a place that no one had even seen until the past Turn or so. Everything about this clutch was weird, and all Bronnia could hope for was that the eggs that remained - all four of them - would still hatch bright, healthy dragons.

But there had been another announcement as well, one that commanded all of the female Candidates to meet in a certain location for their lesson. She had originally been hoping to help her little brother out with something at the end of lunch before the regular afternoon lesson, but this lesson meant that it would probably have to wait for another day.

There was nothing unusual about the day as it progressed; Bronnia didn't mind the repetition and the routine quite as much as some, and she had plenty of patience and hope that her dragon would someday find her... and yet there was still that little nagging, selfish thought, the hope that she would Impress sooner instead of later.

Lunch ended, and it was time to meet in the spare room in the Caverns, to meet with Aniese, one of Vaioa's weyrwomen. Bronnia wasn't entirely sure what was going to happen at this lesson, and, after she greeted the queenrider with proper respect, she placed herself next to Nalenthi, so that she could ask, "got any idea what we're here for?" Bronnia really didn't know what Aniese had planned for them this time, but the last lesson had been heavy enough that Zorog almost quit Candidacy right then and there. She was glad he didn't. However, would today be another talk like that?

No touching? As Ilemin understood it, touching was par the course for every hatching. It had something she had been looking forward to, not even knowing what an egg felt like. Were they leathery or smooth? Did their texture change at all, or was it uniform throughout? Could you feel the dragon toss and turn within the shell or were they sufficiently thick that movement wasn't perceptible? Well, they must have been thick, or they wouldn't have let Candidates rub their grubby little hands all over the eggs, but answering one question did not mean that a hundred more had not come up. At the same time, it wasn't really a surprise. Nothing here had been conventional, and the clutch had already suffered devastating losses. But would it impact the hatchlings? It was something that Ilemin could ask if she was given the opportunity, but she had little idea what the afternoon's lesson would have in store.

As to the subject of the lesson? Ilemin had formed no strong opinions either way. She knew her own ambition and had always nurtured it, but had never applied it to dragonkind before. For so long- for the span of her entire life, almost- she had sought to achieve greatness within the realm of her craft. She had fought and fought to advance, and when she had finally left Keroon, she had left still lobbying for her own ability to walk the tables. There had to be something she could provide to a holder, even if her skill set was extremely specialized. Coming to Vaioa had changed everything, and whether or not it would be for the better remained to be seen. Ilemin had still formulated no plans for what would happen if she did Impress, and had not thought of what color she would want to ride if so. Her true fascination was with the so-called mutations, but even that was scientific in nature. She sought to understand them and unlock the secret that had resulted in their proliferation, but that would never be given to a mere Candidate. Ilemin craved more, it was true- but what did she crave?

The gold rider who would be teaching them was unfamiliar to Ilemin, but then, most of the Weyr was. She recognized the faces in the room surrounding her, but she had met none of them yet. It seemed important that she keep to herself and not form undue attachments with what was essentially her own competition on the road to Impressing, but that did not mean she did not grow lonely. There was time yet to make those bonds, she supposed, even if they were only superficial. The mood in the room seemed distinctly cowed- even the gold rider did not seem happy to be there. Did no one else here appreciate learning? Or perhaps this was a discussion none of them wanted to have. Surely there were a few who had the naked ambition of riding a Queen, but it seemed tasteless to admit to it. There were those who would want the exact opposite, and the rest of them must have been like Ilemin, unsure what they wanted, only that they wanted to Impress and start a new chapter in their life. Even if that chapter meant moving permanently to a new Weyr so soon after she had moved to this first one.

Slipping in, Ilemin took her seat among the other women, glancing around curiously. The lesson could be something else entirely, of course, but rumors flew thick and fast around a Weyr, and nothing remained secret for very long. It was logical though- why else single out the women? It was somewhat uncomfortable to here; Ilemin did not want to admit that she didn't know where her heart lay. She had always been so sure, and the uncertainty was not a pleasant or familiar feeling.

Ashwyn - Slight Tag Aniese, Tag Viviette:

Like almost all of the other candidates, the announcement regarding Zhiarth's egg Touching and the lack thereof had been disappointing. Not unexpected, truly, but disappointing nonetheless. As someone who had seen the poor gold the night of the attack, Ashwyn could understand why a Touching was simply not possible. Zhiarth needed to rest and try and recover. She did not need the strain of a bunch of awkward children stumbling around the remainder of her clutch. Only four eggs. If her own chances of Impressing had been low before, Ashwyn didn't even want to think of them now. She had to hope. If she didn't, she would despair.

After the last lesson hosted by Aniese, Ashwyn entered the classroom with a touch of trepidation. She had a feeling that she knew what this lesson was for; why else would only the girls be called to attend? It was no secret that she wanted to Impress to a gold, and she could already feel the junior weyrwoman's judgement. Still, she held her head high, made slightly more confident by the makeup that somewhat hid her scars, and approached the goldrider. "Hello, Junior Weyrwoman Aniese." Her voice lacked the normal sugary-sweet tone that she reserved for those with power. She simply couldn't muster it today. But she nodded to the woman, before turning to find a place to sit.

Normally, she would have chosen a seat at the very front of the room, making sure to be within view of the candidatemasters and show how much she deserved to Impress. Instead, she went over to join Viviette, nodding to her lover's sister as she sat beside her. "How are you doing?" she murmured, unsure of how disappointed the other candidate was by the news.

Thalia - Slight Tag Aniese, Open:

Well, this was going to be just grand. Thalia had no idea why she was being forced to come to this particular lesson. She knew what it was for, of course. Only the ladies had been called, and Zhiarth had laid a gold egg, so obviously they were going to have the "Queen Talk." Which had no bearing on Thalia's life in any way, shape, or form. The idea of a gold choosing her was laughable. She didn't want a gold. Just a nice, troublesome chromatic dragon. And no gold in its right mind would Impress to her. She didn't exactly keep her distaste of the shinies a secret.

Apparently, that didn't matter to the higher ups. All of the girls had been summoned, and Thalia had never wished for a trousersnake as much as she did as she made her way through the lower caverns. The news broadcasted to the candidates earlier that day still weighed heavily on her mind, and it upset her as much as it did anyone else. It simply wasn't fair. Not in the "why don't we get to see the eggs?" way, of course. Even Thalia wasn't that immature. Her anger was at the unfairness that had caused something to eat those baby dragons before they even had a chance to open their eyes.

Slinking into the classroom, Thalia shot a curt nod in Aniese's general direction, not even looking her way, and dropped into a seat at the very back of the room.

Nalenthi, Tag Slight Viviette, Bronnia

Nalenthi returned Viviette's wave, while carefully ignoring Zahrai's entrance, but before she could drift towards Viviette's position, Bronnia caught her attention with a question. She didn't know the other girl well but that had never stopped Nalenthi from talking to someone before. "I'm pretty sure we're about to get a lecture on the 'joys' of queen riding, " she said with a shrug. "I can't come up with any other reason for why this lesson would exclude the boys." They were still waiting for several others to show up, so Nalenthi decided to ask Bronnia the obvious question, "are you hoping for a gold?" She saw Zahrai gravitate towards the front of the room and resisted the urge to roll her eyes. If there was one person Nalenthi was absolutely sure wasn't goldrider material, it was Zahrai. The other candidate didn't belong at this lesson either.

Amarisha
Tag; Ashwyn, Viviette

Ama finished washing herself with scented water before heeding the summons. After dutifully doing her chores, well, she felt she could do with a little less sweat before attending the afternoon lesson. Wouldn’t want to offend anyone.

After slipping into a clean outfit, Amarisha made her way to the appointed area. Her bronze flit flew along with her, slowly drifting a few feet above her head in perfect silence. The two had been unusually somber since the eggs were attacked. Amarisha hadn’t seen the carnage, but from what she heard it came as no small wonder that the four remaining eggs would be spared a Touching. Best not to put Zhiarth through that. Poor moma had been through enough.

The blonde appeared in the lower caverns on time and nearly cringed at the mood. Had all the happiness gone out of the world? Forcing a smile, determined to cheer things up, Ama stepped in and smiled at the goldrider, offering a cheery, “Afternoon! Good to see you again!”

Then she sat next to Ashwyn. “Hey guys,” she said, peeking around Ash to smile also at Viviette. Her mismatched eyes lingered for an extra moment on Viv, concerned, as if to ask again if she were doing okay. Jaro landed in her lap and bobbed his head in greeting to the familiar girls. Ama placed a hand on his long neck and stroked, twisting in her seat to glance around the room. “Weird without the guys here, huh? Wonder if they are getting a special lesson too.” Giggling, Ama poked Ash in the ribs with an elbow and teased, “Better pay close attention! I think this lesson is for you!” She winked, knowing how bad her friend desired a gold.

Rae couldn't say she was surprised to hear there wouldn't be a Touching for the four eggs in the South. She'd still hoped there would be--any excuse to visit the Weyrhold and be where so many "firsts" were happening--but she wasn't at all blown away by the announcement earlier that morning. She probably would have been surprised to hear there would be a Touching given the queen's fragile state. None of the rumors surrounding Zhiarth were good, and Rae kept an ear out for any news at all.

Viviette had apparently helped the dragonhealers who'd gone to aid the night of the attack, but Rae didn't pester her for news. Given what she'd already heard, it had been a traumatic night, and even Rae's curiosity wouldn't overwhelm her empathy, especially not when the announcement of no Touching came with a female-only lesson with Goldrider Aniese. Given how the last lesson went, Rae wasn't looking forward to it.

When the afternoon rolled around and Rae was free from her chores, she and Jay headed for the designated room and took a seat off to one side but still toward the front. She nodded a greeting to those near her but wasn't in a chatty mood. Imagine that. A Harper not in a mood for gossip or idle conversation. The presence of the goldrider was sobering, and Rae remembered too well the crisis of conscience she'd had about her candidacy the last time Aniese lectured the candidates.

Still, she was there, still a Candidate, still taking the risk just in case a dragon proved her wrong and she was made of suitable mettle to be a rider. Not nearly as confident as before, true. With soft sounds, Rae urged Jay from her shoulder to her lap where he would be less distracting. The blue shurred and obliged, arching his neck under his beloved's fingers as she rubbed his spine. Rae sat tense, hoping this lecture wouldn't be as...ground-shaking as the last.

((Siloren would be attending but she's down South helping with Zhiarth))

Candidate Taia - Tag Ainese, Thalia, Open

One might think that the frequency with which her best friend skipped lessons meant that Taia was a rare sight at the events. Nope. The bubbly young woman was a lot of things, but truant was not one of them. Her tall form could be spotted amongst the steady trickle of candidates. Female candidates, only female candidates. Everyone knew what that meant. Not necessarily from experience, for she had never stood for a gold egg herself, but it was the most likely reason to gather one specific gender. They were about to get the Weyrwoman responsibility talk. She... didn't know how she felt about that. Would it be boring? Maybe. But it would almost definitely be important for at least one of them, which meant she should pay attention.

Well. She should pay as much attention as she ever did.

Her steady pace only faltered once - when she was passing Ainese. So she was going to be hosting this lesson too then? She supposed it made sense. If this was a gold lesson the best person to give it would probably be, you know, a goldrider. Taia flashed a brief smile and said, "I hope you're doing alright, Ainese." There were a lot of reasons for someone not to be doing alright nowadays. She didn't bother wondering if she had overstepped by addressing the goldrider by her name and name alone. Such social details were of little consequence to the candidate.

Taia went on to make a bee-line toward Thalia. She flopped into the seat beside her friend and gave her her best attempt at a supportive smile. The memory of the news of the destruction down south - and Thalia's reaction to it - was all too fresh in her mind. She began to reach out to hold her friend's hand, only to reconsider at the last minute. The thought that she would appreciate such a display, especially in public, was doubtful. Instead, she poked her on the arm. A supportive poke.

Candidate Nalidy - Tag Zahrai, Open

At the present time, Nalidy was trying her hardest not to think about anything in particular. Why? Because there were so many things to think about. She couldn't help but feel like she may get swept away if she let herself start thinking about the current hot topics. Worries would overtake her mind, she'd lose sight of the importence of the now, and her very demeanor may be at risk. What had happened was a travesty, but there was nothing to be gained by mourning. As such, she would not allow herself to mourn.

Ainese was granted a brief nod of respect. The candidates themselves were largely ignored outside of a brief glance at the assembled crowd. Wordlessly, she claimed a seat beside Zahrai. The redheaded candidate may be rather different from her, but they got along well enough. She may even go as far as to say she liked her. Nalidy smiled to herself and smoothed out her skirt to give her something to do with her hands. As she did so, she couldn't help but think that, yes, this was alright.
