Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Kidrai was giddy. He never had been good at keeping secrets, but somehow, he'd succeeded with this one. Maybe it was because R'vor had helped him. The greyrider had been so kind during the candidate field trip. When they'd stumbled upon the clutch of wild firelizard eggs, and Kidrai had told him of his idea, he had told him how to care for the egg. How to keep it warm with sand from the Hatching Grounds, how to check the shell's hardness every day, how to know when it was ready. It was definitely ready. Kidrai had asked his mother to help him check. Her firelizards had hummed. That must've meant something.

Now, the egg was ready! It was just a happy coincidence that it was Turnover. A perfect excuse to go see Madra. As if you need an excuse. His ears turned a delicate shade of pink, and he coughed loudly, accidentally drawing an odd look from a passing drudge. Smiling, he waved, and the drudge nodded before moving on. No. He didn't need an excuse. But it was nice, having the day off to celebrate. Neither of them would be very busy now.

Kidrai cradled the pot that safely held the little golden egg in the crook of his arm, holding it to his chest. The heat of the clay seeped through his tunic, warming his very heart. Grinning with non-repressed glee, he knocked on the door, the three-rap knock that told Madra who exactly was there to see her. Hurry up, hurry up! He couldn't wait any longer!

Madra was seething. How dare she. How dare that little patch of silver scum say things like that to her. How dare she... be... right? No, not right. Xeres couldn't be right. She was strong, but not a monster. She wasn't dead inside. So what if no one loved her? She didn't need love. All she needed was to be respected and feared. Alright, so a little rat of a candidate had caused some problems for the 'respect' part of that, but it was only a minor bump in the road. Madra didn't need love. Didn't want love. So, really, it was fine that no one loved her.

She was fine with being unlovable, so long as she was still better than everyone. She was also happy that she was such a good liar. These things, she told herself, weren't connected.

Focused on her anger as she was, the drudge failed to notice a few things. Her face was pale, her eyes tired, and her hair slightly ruffled. Most of the time she tried to look as impeccable as possible. Now? Now she just looked tired and upset. Not that it mattered. There was no one to see her and she wasn't standing in front of a mirror to see her distress and realize that she may be trying to fool herself. Tunnelsnake, she thought. Stupid, tone-deaf tunnelsnake. What does she know? Nothing! Did she think she would get to me? Well, she didn't! I don't want love. I'm not upset.

A truly fantastic liar.

Her internal tirade was cut off by a few sharp knocks to her door. Madra froze, snapped back to reality, ran a hand through her hair in a weak attempt to smooth it down, and stood up. There was little mystery as to who was outside that door. There were only two people who came to visit her. Indeed, upon opening the door she was greeted by the smiling face of Kidrai. That make her wonder, why did he visit her? It wasn't like... well, yes. It was. Xeres was right about one thing - Madra was unlovable. She had come to realize that she didn't want anything from him and Kamene, that, for whatever reason, she genuinely enjoyed their presence, but they couldn't feel the same toward her. What did he want? Maybe he was playing a long game, hoping that his kindness toward her would get him some sort of favor one day. Didn't he know that she didn't need kindness?

Curiosity and insecurity touched her face. It was gone in a flash, replaced by a polite smile as she stepped aside to let him in. "What is it?" she asked, yet to notice the egg. Composed, controlled, and not upset.

ooc: I've decided that this post/thread takes place not long after this for reasons involving emotions.

Kidrai's cheerful expression faltered when Madra opened the door. It wouldn't have been accurate to say that she looked awful; Madra was a gorgeous woman no matter what. But she did look pale. Tired. Daresay...sad? Tilting his head to the side like a confused puppy, he blinked at her. "It's Turnover. Aren't you going to celebrate?" She didn't seem like she was in a celebratory mood. She wasn't dressed up. She was still in her room. Kidrai decided not to press her for answers. There was one thing that he had learned during his friendship with Madra: she was a reserved woman. If he questioned her nonstop, she would grow more and more distant. But, if he was cautious about it, he could sometimes get her to open up to him.

So, the candidate walked into the room, turning on his heel to face her, eyes brightening once more. His cheeks darkened with a blush, and his smile turned shy. "I...may have brought something for you. Before you ask: no, I didn't buy it, so I can't take it back. But if you don't want it, I suppose I can find a home for it. But I really hope you want it. It wasn't very easy to attain." He spoke fast, as he was prone to doing when nervous, and he held the pot out to her with both hands.

"Careful. It's a little hot."

Kidrai was like a ray of sunshine, only where rukbat set every evening, his light never faded. So when that smile faltered for a moment, she felt a flicker of... something. Guilt? It was a ridiculous notion. She didn't feel guilt. Guilt was for other people. The weak, spineless, insecure, cowards who regretted their every other action. Yet... yes. It was almost definitely guilt. She didn't know whether to feel annoyed, disgusted, sad, or to give into that little voice telling her to do whatever she could to stop that grin from faltering again.

Madra attempted to push those feelings aside like so much dust. She couldn't show that she might be something that could be described as insecure. With a weak smile, she gave the excuse of, "tonight hasn't been great." She didn't say anything about her encounter with the graphiterider. That might make him pity her and, Faranth, she didn't want pity.

So many thoughts were swirling within her head, all of which came to a screeching halt when Kidrai showed her his gift. Egg. That was an egg. An egg that really didn't look like a wherry egg or something. A golden one at that. An egg that, if it really was what it looked like, could fetch him a lot of marks. And he was... giving it to her?

The heat of the pot brought her back to her senses. Her eyes went wide when he showed it to her only for her to wince when she accepted it. With a small, un-Madra-like squeak, she hurried over to her bed and set it down. She had accepted that she cared for him, but she had assumed that he liked her in the same misguided way he liked everyone. Nothing special, just another person to be nice to, even if they weren't really nice to anyone. Madra wanted, very nearly expected, to be respected, feared, and admired. She had accepted that she would probably never be loved or even strongly liked. Did Kidrai give a gold firelizard egg to everyone he liked just because he was that kind of person?

"I don't know what to say," she whispered. Two rarities at once. Madra was being fully honest and speechless at the same time. "I... thank you." She still couldn't make sense of it. Normally she would have found some sort of reason by now. She couldn't... he couldn't genuinely care about her. She wasn't loveable. Xeres was wrong about a lot of things, but shard it, that wasn't one of them. Further awkward attempts at speech were halted by the egg beginning to rock. "It's hatching!" Madra gasped. Not that she needed to say anything. The world may be really confusing all of a sudden, but Kidrai still had eyes.

Well, today's about to get better for you, my lady, Kidrai thought smugly, affection filling every fiber of his being as he waited for Madra to take the pot. Faranth, he hoped she would accept the gift. Was it too much? No, it couldn't be. She deserved a flitter, especially after recent events. If she was now going to have to wait for her dragon--she would Impress--then she could have a little friend to keep her company.

Her squeak made him jump, and he cupped his hands underneath hers on instinct, ready to catch the fragile egg if she dropped it. Perhaps he should have wrapped it up in something, put a barrier between the clay and her fingers. Yes, that probably would've been wise, he mused, losing himself in his head for a moment. When he came back to Pern, he saw that Madra was now by her bed, and the egg was safe in its pots on the blanket. Shaking his head, Kid trotted over to her, automatically taking one of her hands to inspect it for burns. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have passed it over to you without some sort of protection. Are you all--huh?"

Dumbly, he just stared at her, still holding her hand in his. Wide aquamarine eyes stared at Madra, and he wasn't quite sure if he'd heard correctly. Had she...thanked him? Faranth, thanks weren't necessary. He'd just wanted to cheer her up a bit. Ducking his head bashfully, Kidrai shrugged one shoulder, grinning. "Well, you're welcome. But you don't need to--it is?" His fingers tightened around Madra's hand as he looked down and, sure enough, the golden egg was rocking in its tiny nest of sand.

It truly was a lucky day. He would get to watch Madra's gold hatch with her! "Food!" he blurted out excitedly, vibrating with new excitement. "You need to have something to feed her when she hatches."

He was grinning. Faranth, he looked so... so bright when he grinned. Why would someone so bright, bright enough that even she wouldn't be able to extinguish his light, hang around her? Didn't he know that she threw others into darkness to make herself seem to glow brighter? She didn't have time to ponder what those thoughts meant or deny her last ones, for the egg was hatching and the hatchling within would need meat.

"Oh!" Madra exclaimed. "I'll go get some, stay there!" She took of like a lightning bolt. No explanation was offered to anyone who gave her curious looks as she raced into the kitchen and grabbed meat. She didn't have time to stop and explain to the gawkers! As might as she loathed to admit it, this might be the closest she would get to a dragon. She would not lose that chance.

The redhead returned to her room just as the first cracks began to appear in the egg. She sat down breathlessly, bowl of meat in hand and excitement upon her face. Her excited expression was replaced by a gentle one when a hole formed and a golden head peeked out. "Oh," Madra breathed. "Kidrai, she's..." she didn't have time to finish before the firelizard destroyed the rest of her shell and pounced upon the meat. The feeling of another mind brushed against hers as the bond formed.

Kidrai nodded, kneeling beside the bed and resting his elbows on the mattress. He leaned forward, bright-eyed as a child as he watched the egg roll around inside the pot. Don't hatch quickly, don't hatch quickly, he begged the little one inside, as cracks spinner-webbed across the golden shell. She needs to be here. I can't hold you for her. Of course, if the gold broke the shell before Madra was back, Kidrai would try. But he knew that firelizards could fly and Between as soon as they hatched, so he didn't think that he would be very successful.

His eyes frequently flickered towards the door as the minutes ticked by. Hurry! he mentally urged Madra. He couldn't wait to see her face when she first lay eyes on her baby firelizard. It would be precious, he just knew. "Just wait a little bit," he whispered to the egg, shifting his weight to his other knee. He perked up every time he heard footsteps in the corridor outside, but none of them were Madra.

When she finally returned, Kidrai jumped up eagerly. He waved her over, shoulder brushing hers as she sat down. "Looks like you made it just in time." He grabbed her hand, squeezing it excitedly as the fissures in the eggshell deepened. Only seconds later, a piece wobbled and gave way to a pale head. He gasped, finishing Madra's sentence as she bonded to the little one.

"She's perfect." There was a tenderness in his eyes, as they lifted from the flit to Madra's face. "Do you like her?" He had never seen her look so gentle before. It was stunning.
