Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

A slow dinnertime. Cayliss watched from within the kitchens with a smile, careful to hide her predatory instincts. Many of the riders had cleared out already, and although there was certainly no rule against Weyrfolk taking meals with the riders, Cayliss was highly interested in maintaining a low profile.

But now, with many diners having retired to their weyrs and moved onto other ways to spend their evening, Cayliss decided now was the time to pounce. She'd been waiting to eat until there was someone to eat with. She'd met a number of riders by now, but always wanted to meet more. The more she knew about the Weyr and the people in it, the better.

She took her plate of food and slid into the central area of the lower caverns. There were a couple of riders in small groups, but she found one sitting alone, still finishing his dinner. He was tall and skinny, even when seated. He was dressed simply, had the potential to be handsome. She smirked and sat down across from him.

"Excuse me. Is this seat open?" She blinked up at him and smiled in as disarming a way as she could manage. "I've only just gotten onto dinner. I'm Cayliss, I work in the kitchens."

So'rik liked eating in the dining hall. There was something pleasant about being surrounded by his fellow weyrfolk, even if he wasn't particularly close to any of them. That sense of casual companionship provided by being part of the Weyr. Naturally, his dragon disagreed with him. Are you sure you want to eat down there? Sybanth asked. Every day she asked the same question and every day he gave her the same answer.

A smile quirked at his lips as he ate. I'm sure. He was rewarded by an agitated huff from his dragons. Four turns they had been bonded and she still didn't understand why he wasn't content to curl up with her, where it was safe.

I just don't want anything to happen to you, she sadly said. With her words came the impression of the other weyrfolk being dangerous. It was a bit of a small minded statement, but it still managed to tug at his heartstrings.

Nothing's going to happen to me, he assured her. The Vaioans are good people. At least, they'd proven themselves to be good people so far. It was as he was hoping that they wouldn't give him reason to amend his statement that Cayliss approached him.

The greenrider gave her a nod. "Of course. I could use some company." In the back of his mind, he felt Sybanth huff. She could give him company if he had agreed to eat in their weyr! Rather than address the green, he returned Cayliss' smile. "I'm So'rik, rier of green Sybanth. It's a pleasure to meet you, Cayliss."

Cayliss brightened at the rider's response. She didn't know almost anything about dragonriding, save what she'd picked up-- tidbits here and there and snatches of overheard conversation that she'd tried to piece together-- but she did know that riders tended to be proud of their dragons.

"So'rik? It's nice to meet you. Sybanth is a very pretty name. She must be a very pretty dragon, too." She studied his face with her dark eyes before taking a bite of her supper and chewing thoughtfully. "Did you Impress recently, or some time ago?"

Inside, she couldn't help but feel that it was good to gather as much information as she could-- perhaps an old habit that could not be broken-- but there was a flicker of genuine interest there, too. She had only met a handful of riders thus far and none seemed overly interested in telling their stories to some Lower Caverns worker, especially not when she appeared overly curious. Polite curiosity was another matter altogether, though, and she did have plenty of that. Being a rider seemed to be a world far removed from her own, one that she could only begin to understand.

While So'rik wasn't prone to bragging, his eyes did sparkle with pride at the mention of Sybanth. He didn't always get along with his dragon, but he did love her. The green in question perked up at the mention her her name. << She wants to know about me? >> she asked.

Nothing bad, he assured her.

He could feel the skepticism radiating off the green. << I don't trust her. >> So'rik nearly pointed out that she didn't trust anyone. Aware that he was going to do so, she cut him off by saying, << people need to earn trust. I won't give someone something that they haven't earned. >> If Sybanth's trust was harder to earn than most, then they'd just have to be especially trustworthy.

So'rik sided internally and turned his attention back to Cayliss. "She's quite a sight," he confirmed. "Vibrant green with pink tips." With a wry smile, he added, "it makes us quite recognizable in threadfall. As for your other question, I impressed her at Fort four turns ago." He took a bite of his own meal and briefly wondered if it was wise to tell her where he was from. Since it was neither a secret nor a particular point of shame for him, he didn't think much of it.

"Pink tips!" Cayliss nodded, interested in the description. She didn't get out into the weyrbowl much, and as a result didn't know almost any dragons by sight, so the description didn't ring a bell. But maybe someday she could begin to recognize the dragons on sight. "She does sound beautiful. I'll bet she stands out in a crowd, too." Cayliss smiled warmly.

Fort, that was certainly interesting. Cayliss had never been, and knew next to nothing about it, except that Vaioa had received a recent influx of transfers from them-- all from the same Weyrling class. "What was Fort like?" She asked, blinking curiously. "I've only ever been to Vaioa Weyr. What do you think of all the recent transfers?" She herself didn't know much-- just the gossip she overheard in the Lower Caverns-- but she'd have guessed that it wasn't so bad a place. Although supposeduly they had 'encouraged' all of those newly-graduated riders to transfer, which was... odd indeed.

He felt Sybanth settle down to listen to the continued conversation. She didn't say anything more yet, but that didn't mean he expected her to stay quiet. One wrong move and he'd be smothered with all sorts of questions. Still, the mental peace was nice while it lasted. Despite her wariness, the compliments caused a swell of pride within the green. "She does," So'rik said with a chuckle.

Sybanth caused him headaches at times, but he tended to enjoy talking about her. Fort had been his home for most of his life, but now it was far from an enjoyable subject. So'rik had to stifle a reluctant sigh before he began speaking. His old home may be a sore subject now, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to say anything. "Fort was... traditional. Mistreatment wasn't common, but ranks were strict and you were expected to know your place. Wings like Flint and Coal never would have happened there. As for the new transfers..." he hesitated before continuing. Even at Vaioa, there were mixed opinions toward blacks and graphites. "I transferred in with them, actually. Mistreatment wasn't common, but an exception was made for that class."

"Oh." Cayliss nodded at his description, then took a bite of dinner; the food would give her an extra second or two to mull things over.

From her perspective, there was something to ranks at Vaioa. She was a Lower Caverns worker, not afforded the same privileges and treatment by the Weyr. And yet, Vaioa did provide for her and the other workers, and they had willingly taken in all of the ex-Holdless (however quietly). Nor had she ever been shooed away from riders, in situations like this exact one. Every time she'd snuck in to meet the riders and socialize with them, she'd never been turned away, for her rank or any other reason. In fact, it seemed like Vaioa treated its Lower Caverns residents like... well... people. When So'rik said that it was traditional... and that you were expected to know your place... did he mean that this type of behavior in a Lower Caverns worker would have been frowned upon? It certainly sounded like it, anyway.

"You came with the newest transfers?" Cayliss did not hide her surprise. That was interesting. She wanted to know more-- had it been voluntary? What had been his reasoning?-- But she could tell from his hesitation and the slant of his mouth that he must be uncomfortable with the subject. Best not to press it.

She glanced down and traced her finger along the rim of her cup, thinking carefully. She didn't want to alienate him. "When you say that you were expected to know your place..." She glanced up at him questioningly. "Do dragon colors really have that much to do with rank? Couldn't a Green pair be just as capable as a Bronze pair? Why else would Vaioa have Green wingleaders in Flint and Coal?"

So'rik felt the agitation flare up within his dragon when the capability of fighters was mentioned. He wanted to think carefully on the subject before he answered. Cayliss seemed interested and he wanted her curiosity to be rewarded with accurate information. Unfortunately, he did not get the chance to do so. Sybanth had her own thoughts on the situation and was eager to have them heard. She invaded Cayliss' mind without any warning to the kitchen worker, speaking in a voice that all but oozed bitterness. << Yeah, well they Do their best to ignore that. >>

"Sybanth!" So'rik snapped, surprise and agitation leading to him speaking out loud.

The green hissed up on her ledge. << You know it'it's true. They should have respected me more. 'Paranoid' this. 'Silly green' that. >>

He didn't address her directly again. Instead, he shook his head and told Cayliss, "I'm sorry, that was very rude of her." He sighed before differently continuing, "Fort had... different values. Fighters weren't exactly looked down upon, but many believed that if someone would make a good leader they would have impressed a larger color. There were brown and gray wingseconds and wing thirds sometimes, of course, but blue and below are largely limited to teaching positions." That still didn't do anything to explain the treatment of the new colors. Even if they were considered followers and followers alone, that didn't warrant a mass transfer.

<< Fort's filled with liars and cheats, >> Sybanth grumbled. << They were scared of newness, so they made up lies. >> He didn't bother pointing out that some individuals finding her offensive didn't reflect the Weyr itself. Besides that, there may have been some truth to her words.

Cayliss jumped at the voice that entered her head, actually unconsciously raising a hand to her forehead and rubbing experimentally. Where had that come from? Interesting, how... she hadn't heard it, at least not really, and yet... in a way, she had. She marveled for a moment longer on the sensation and then looked up at So'rik, slightly dazed.

"Was that... Um... Was that Sybanth?" How curious it was, to feel a dragon's voice inside your head. How totally unlike anything she had ever experienced.

Still, the Green's words were illuminative. She tilted her head and smiled up at So'rik, hopin to mollify him. "It's alright, I wouldn't call it rude. I was asking for your opinions, after all." She listened to what he was saying, and nodded, thoughtfully.

"I'm sorry if I am asking offensive questions," she finally ventured, letting her uncertainty come through in slight hesitations. "I just... don't know anything about dragons, and I'm really interested in learning..." She trailed off, and then shrugged. "It seems to me like every dragonrider is a good leader. That's one of the things that makes them a good rider. I wouldn't have thought that a bigger dragon meant anything, necessarily, about leadership or responsibility. It's hypocritical, isn't it? To say that smaller dragons can be in charge of candidates, but not wings. If they're good enough to lead candidates, they should be good enough to lead, period." She smiled, somewhat reluctantly. Maybe Fort wouldn't have been a very good place for her after all, especially not if she were going to end up as 'just' a Lower Caverns worker. From the sound of it, Fort would have looked down on her, simply because of that. Here at Vaioa, although she could hardly claim she was warming up to the place, she was at least quite comfortable. She hadn't been exposed to any prejudice. Even if So'rik claimed that mistreatment wasn't common, overt attitudes could be just as damaging. "So the leaders of Fort are just... really interested in preserving their leadership, then?"
