Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Really, not being official candidates seemed to be the trend for at least three dragonhealers now. Vinsica wondered to herself how many other shared a similar Impression story. Had any been just out of age? There was that garnetrider transfer who'd Impressed beyond traditional limits, right? Vinny couldn't remember with certainty if that information was correct, but there had been quite the buzz surrounding some garnet transfer. Vinsica nodded in understanding.

"I thought I'd go rusty after all that time away from the craft, so I studied in what little free time I had once Pileeth was more independent." And Vinny didn't need to cut her food from a beast's carcass. Or shovel her droppings from the latrine. Or wake up at Faranth knew what candlemark because her hide itched. After the worst of the growth spurts and gaining flight and hunting skills...then Vinsica had been able to brush up and take her chores in the Infirmary.

At least the master dragonhealer didn't seem to care for Vinny's half explanation. Not that the knowledge was secret. Not after the Rubikon arrests and that horrid accident and sharding-- No. No, she would not think of that rat now. The day had yet to begin. She wouldn't start it poorly. Patches peeped and, seeing that Vinny wasn't guarding her breakfast very closely, snuck off her forearm and licked some porridge off the lip of the bowl.

"Patches, no," proved that she had seen him even though she wasn't watching him and was drinking her klah instead, relaxing more as the conversation turned to Healing and Ircha didn't press the brand issue. The blue sulked and curled around the bowl, using its warmth instead. She cleared her throat before her answer, cradling her mug in both hands. "Well, I've mostly focused on emergency trauma since Impressing Pileeth. She can't last a full 'Fall even when we're Wing-light, so I work triage every 'Fall."

It was a difficult job, deciding which lives had the best chances for recovery, who could wait, and who didn't have a candle's chance between, but it was vital. Vinny had been good a it, too, before a certain copperrider convinced her she was just as human as the rest of them. "I've always found preventative healing fascinating, though. Keeping dragons healthy and well nourished and keeping disease from taking hold before it has a chance. Stronger, healthier dragons would mean fewer injuries all around."

"I did go rusty," Ircha admitted easily. She'd been only a few days from her 30th Turnday when she'd Impressed Kibeth, and the chores of a Weyrling were intense, after the more mentally-but less physically- challenging life of a Journeywoman Healer. It had been a long time before she had managed to do anything more then sleep in the free time allowed by the needs of a growing dragon. It didn't help that Ircha was nearly incapacitated with fear nearly every day once Kibeth grew large enough to carry her and flying became mandatory. Despite her parent's opinions on the subject, flying on Kibeth's neck didn't make facing heights much easier. She didn't know what she would have done if she hadn't been a Healer, and thus exempt from flying Thread. "I had to work my tailfork off once we finally graduated to brush up, though I will say I had a much better understanding of so many things after Impressing Kibeth. It's one thing to read about a subject and quite another to live it, as I'm sure you know. Having my own practice dummy was also useful," Ircha smiled at this. Kibeth had been a good sport about having casts and wing rigs built on him so she could get the hang of it, without jostling actual patients.

Patches' antics attracted Ircha's attention, her smile widening as she took another sip of klah and watched the firelizard try some of Vinsica's breakfast. The stimulant property of the drink was finally kicking in. She was feeling a little more energy, so it would soon be time to wake Kibeth. It would be nice to get South before it got dark down there.

Vinsica's answer didn't surprise Ircha. With Vaioa lacking Healers, trauma healing would be the priority here, though she knew that the Journeywoman had been at several Weyrs during her career. Specializing in more refined areas was hard if you didn't stay in one place for long, and if the most immediate needs of your Weyr were not being met. Still, Vinsica's skill set certainly wasn't a disadvantage in Ircha's opinion. If she could rely on the Journeywoman to run triage, she would be freed up to start treating any severe cases that came in requiring immediate treatment during the Fall. "I'm pleased to hear that Vinsica. I can't teach triaging from hides, well not more than the basics anyways. It has to be learned from experience, so yours will be indispensable."

"I am a strong proponent of preventative measures," Ircha assured Vinsica when the other woman brought it up. She'd been bringing in Vaioa's fighting dragons this week in an effort to assess any potential problems before they went aloft to fight Thread. Some of them had been more agreeable about it than others, she thought, remembering her appointment with J'nai and his Elokith. "I would be happy to expand your education on this subject, if you'd like," she offered sincerely. Some Healers were content with staying at their current level of knowledge after Impressing. It was difficult to find time around their duties to the Infirmary and to their dragon for expanding their studies. However Ircha would encourage anyone willing to try.

Vinsica smiled despite herself, an easy expression she'd never had before meeting Aislyn. Even after meeting Aislyn for a while. The copperrider had managed to weasel her way passed Vinny's guards and now the greenrider found it easier--if still awkward--to hold normal conversations. Exhibit a: the master sitting across from her. It was...nice.

"Pileeth didn't appreciate being used as a practice dummy," she smiled and sipped her klah. "The wing rigs were her least favorite." They had required the young dragon to stay still, which she still didn't enjoy doing, even several turns later. Maturity had yet to calm her need to move, but Vinny doubted that would ever happen. The green was energetic and dauntless. If she slowed down, something was seriously wrong.

It was a bit of a surprise, Ircha's compliment. True, Vinsica knew she had valuable experience and knew that what she did during Threadfall was vital in ensuring that as many lives as possible were saved, but hearing it, especially from a master, was another thing entirely. Sure, Ircha hadn't been in Vaioa very long. She couldn't have met every dragonhealer yet, couldn't know their skillsets, but the faith made the greenrider a little self-conscious.

"I'll be showing one of my apprentices next Threadfall. He'll shadow me until triaging gets busy, and I'll send him to aid the other apprentices," she explained just in case Ircha had objections to an apprentice shadowing a triage. E'son was proving to be a fast and eager learner, and Vinny wanted to impress upon him just how difficult a dragonhealer's job was. The best opportunity was during 'Fall. Yonnal was not up to speed yet, still struggling with literacy, so his turn would come later.

Vinny almost choked on her klah from Ircha's offer, though, and even Patches looked up to make sure she was okay. Clearing her throat, she swallowed hard. "I would be honored, master Ircha," was a little breathless thanks to her breakfast trying to kill her. That was the right thing to say, though, right? Shards, it would be an honor to train under a master. An honor and a welcome change. "It has been...a while since I could dedicate study under one master. I should have more time for it now, having transferred from Shale to Amber Wing."

Ircha quietly laughed at Vinsica's comment. "You have a squirmer then, ay?" Most dragons, especially young ones, didn't handle immobility too well, but Kibeth had always been gracious about it. "Kibeth can very pushy about certain things," Ircha said with a frown, "but he is also wonderfully patient. We could not be a better match, although that's what Impression means, I suppose." In the Turns before the Pass started, Ircha had spent some time trying to understand what the bond between human and dragon was exactly. She hadn't gotten very far as the records on the subject that she'd seen were nearly unintelligible, both due to their physical condition and the language the writer had used. There were many terms that she simply hadn't recognized and further consultation with her Master at the time had not been illuminating.

Vinsica then brought up the topic of shadowing during Fall. Ircha nodded as the other woman explained her plan. Falls were chaotic, which made teaching difficult, but it was a necessary part of learning dragonhealing during a Pass. Most injuries were sustained during Threadfall, so gaining experience in handling these situations was never going to come from a calm, controlled environment. "I have no objections. Just please remind him to be watchful of his surroundings," Ircha responded when Vinsica concluded her proposal. It felt like Kibeth was stirring from the sensations awakening in the back of her skull. Ircha would need to get up and join him soon, to get ready to go South.

At the sound on of Vinsica's choked sound, Ircha looked up sharply, distracted from probing her bond with Kibeth. Had she said something wrong? Apparently not, as Vinsica quickly expressed her gratitude for Ircha's offer. I'm awake, where are you? Kibeth asked, confirming her suspicions. Ircha sighed, tossing back her last gulp of klah before standing up. She caught the other woman's explanation, and pursed her lips at the idea of a Healer fighting thread. Ircha didn't really approve of that, since Healers were more valuable assets in her view than wingriders, but that was Vinsica's choice. If she remembered correctly, and she usually did, Amber Wing was the queen's wing here at Vaioa. At least Vinsica was less likely to experience injury there and deprive Ircha of a competent Journeywoman. I'm on my way. "The lazy one wakes, so I must go see to him before we skip South. I'm glad to hear that you'll have time now to pursue further studies. When you get a chance in the next few days, come find me in my office and we set up a schedule." With that said, Ircha nodded to Vinsica and strode off towards the entrance.

(OOC:I hope ending it here, or in your next post if you want Vinny to react to this is fine, I couldn't think of more for them to talk about, so this seemed like a natural ending)
