Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

It was barely a full sevenday after the horrid experience down South. Vinsica swore she'd taken three of those days trying to recover. Zhiarth needed constant attention, and dragonhealers were being rotated there at an alarming rate. Who knew when Vinny would be back? After the first night and following day, having caught very little sleep, she'd been physically, mentally, and emotionally drained.

A sevenday later, not much had changed.

Walking into the night hearth was like visiting a familiar friend. It was still early early in the morning, even for dragonriders, but the night hearth functioned at all the odd candlemarks, making it a bit poorly named, but Vinny didn't care. It had klah, and that's what mattered before she met her apprentice for a clinical rotation.

Retrieving a mug, Vinsica briefly considered just having that. Except Brue, Aislyn's blue, was constantly visiting her with messages to remind her to eat. An early breakfast it was then. Patches peeped from her shoulder, the blue leaning forward to sniff at the porridge Vinsica decided to have, and the dragonhealer gave a thankful nod to the drudge, holding her bowl well out of Patches' reach. As she walked, she sipped her klah and searched for a place to sit.

Well. She wasn't the only one waking up. The new master dragonhealer was there. Normally, Vinny wouldn't dare disturb her, but Aislyn's influence nagged until she returned to the hearth, sequestered a pot of klah, and wove through the chairs and tables to Ircha.

"Master Ircha," she greeted with a nod and held up the klah pot like a peace offering. "Do you mind if I join you?"

Ircha opened her eyes in the darkness of her weyr and groaned. She couldn't be exactly sure of the time, but it seemed even earlier than her usual premature awakening. She had been considering speaking to Master Ashtar about the problem, but she suspected he wouldn't be able to offer her anything she hadn't already tried and found unsuitable for various reasons. Sighing, the woman sat up on the edge of the bed and ran her hands through her hair. Maybe she was just dreading her trip down South to check on Zhiarth, scheduled for later that day. Ircha needed to see the gold, to make sure her wounds were healing properly and were free of infection. The last sevenday's worth of reports she'd read from the other dragonhealers in the roster were as favorable as was possible for such severe injuries, so hopefully the only thing to fear about the visit was the ride to and from.

The woman dressed and slipped out of her weyr, smiling at the sleeping forms of Kibeth and Itch as she passed. She found her way to the night hearth and snagged her first cup of klah for the day, hoping to dispel the lingering tiredness she never could seem to shake these days. Absorbed in her thoughts, Ircha barely noticed the approach of someone else, until Vinsica spoke up. She looked up at the Journeywoman, smiling when she saw the klah pot held in one hand, and gestured to a seat, "I don't mind a bit, especially if that pot in your hands is fair game."

As much as her social skills had improved over the last turn or so, Vinsica still found it really odd for a master to smile at her. Shells, even talking to one outside of the Infirmary--or other healers in general--was a rare enough occurrence that Vinny didn't know how to separate her craft from people. Everyone had their box in her head and she was already starting to regret her offer.

Except to leave now would be rude, and Vinny was curious what brought the master here. Besides the open position.

"Fair game," she confirmed and set the pot in the middle of the table before taking a seat across from Ircha and setting her own food down. Patches hopped to the table too, staying close to Vinny, though, since he didn't know the other woman well.

"I hear you're heading South later today," Vinny started rather lamely. It was probably the worst topic choice considering how often Vinsica herself had been down to check on Zhiarth. But nothing else came to mind, and Pileeth was no help while sleeping. Of all the times not to have her commentary in Vinny's head.

Ircha reached out to grab the pot as soon as Vinsica set it down on the table. She topped off her cup and looked over at Vinsica's blue flit as she took another sip of klah. "He's got a nice color to him. What's his name?" The blue seemed a little shy, huddling close to his bonded. If Itch was here, he'd probably be trying to crawl into Vinsica's lap to make a new friend right about now, or possibly just attempt to eat her food. The Journeywoman didn't seem like the type to appreciate that, although Ircha didn't know her well enough to be sure. Maybe that was about to change.

"I hear you're heading South later today,"
A grimace plastered itself across Ircha's face at Vinsica's statement. Hopefully it would just seem like she was worried for Zhiarth, which was true, but not the actual reason for her expression. She'd done more flying in the last sevenday than in practically any month since Kibeth and she graduated from Weyrling training. Things weren't going to settle anytime soon either. Ircha would be checking on Zhiarth at least once a sevenday for the foreseeable future and then there would be the Hatching, which Ircha was determined to be present for. The remaining eggs seemed healthy but she wasn't willing to take any chances. She'd be there for the event, come Fall or high water.

"That's true. I'll probably be heading down there as soon as Kibeth wakes up, which could easily take another candlemark. That one loves his sleep. I've been following the reports closely, but what's your personal opinion on her potential flight capability?" Ircha asked before taking another sip from her cup. Repairs to the gold's wingsails were still underway, a process Ircha intended to further along today, but it really was anyone's guess how successful they'd be at this point. Ircha would be immensely pleased if Zhiarth managed to regain even limited flight ability.

Vinsica knew bringing the klah was a good idea. When Ircha topped off her cup, Vinny started in on her breakfast, knowing she'd need the energy for her shift later. A shift in Vaioa. Unless something went horribly wrong with Ircha's visit later today, she should be able to meet E'son and Yonnal for their lessons. Vinny had to cancel a couple this sevenday already because of Zhiarth's treatment but...

"Oh, this is Patches," Vinny quickly amended, and the blue looked up curiously when he heard his name. He rubbed his head along the back of Vinny's hand affectionately and didn't venture beyond the protective reach of her arm. Still, he looked over at Ircha and cocked his head, recognizing her as someone his beloved had spent a lot of time around lately but still didn't know her that well. He peeped at her, curious but still hiding behind Vinny's arm.

The grimace told Vinsica that yes, she'd chosen her subject poorly. Not everything had to be about her craft. Her conversations with Aislyn were proof enough of that since the copperrider had many interests and was expanding Vinny's horizons. Not to mention Hama's inquiries. She wasn't prepared to offer her own opinion and blinked when the question registered. She cleared her throat and took a sip of klah before relaxing, resting her free hand self-consciously on her wrapped forearm.

"If she wasn't brooding, I'd give her a good prognosis for regaining flight after intensive therapy to strengthen her joints," Vinsica started tactfully, keeping her voice neutral. "But with her not letting anyone near the eggs even just to treat her, we'll have to reopen scar tissue just to repair her sails, and that's assuming her wingsail will respond well and regrow along a patchwork." Vinny had her doubts. Dragon wingsail was incredibly durable and had an incredible rate of healing, but with the shear amount of damage done to Zhiarth, Vinsica couldn't see intentionally reinjuring scarred-over sail allowing Zhiarth to fly again. "However, wings are not my specialty."

It probably had not been fair to spring the question of Zhiarth's wings on Vinsica this early in the morning, Ircha reflected as she noted the other woman' short pause. It nothing else it was well before their official shifts, and she'd always thought people should have a life outside their craft, even if she didn't really practice that herself. Still Vinsica recovered readily, and supplied a considered answer.

Ircha found herself nodding, sharing the Journeywoman's doubts. There were a lot of if's in Zhiarth's future, although if her short time with Morasil and her dragon was anything to go by, the pair would fight for every possible improvement. "I'm confident we've got a good plan in place for her wing rehabilitation, but I still sent Itch to Master Nellan at Fort. I don't think there's a more practiced wing specialist on Pern right now. He's going to fly in to give us a second opinion once the Hatching is over and she's more approachable."

Ircha took another sip of her coffee, before broaching a few more questions, hopefully ones less laborious to answer. "Where are you from originally? Did you Impress Pileeth at Vaioa?"

Shards, what Vinsica wouldn't give to study for one month with Master Nellan. If there was a dragonhealer who hadn't heard of him, they'd been living under a rock their entire career. The man was brilliant and innovative and had already pushed the boundaries of "impossible" in the treatment of wings. Still, even with his expertise, Vinny had her doubts.

"I would like to attend that consultation, if I may," Vinny threw out into the world just in case it was even the remotest possibility. Wings might not have been her specialty, but she saw that as all the more reason to continue studying them. There would not always be a wing expert on hand for the challenging cases.

What might have been to most a harmless change in topics was one Vinsica found tedious. And uncomfortable. She distracted herself with a sip of her klah, lest she clear her throat reflexively. "I'm from Fort way." At least she assumed since that's the Weyr dragons took her. "I spent a journeyman rotation here in Vaioa when Pileeth hatched. Apparently being on the sands tending a wounded candidate made me fair game."

With a brief pause for another drink of klah to wet her dry throat, Vinsica set the mug down, which was invitation enough for Patches to clamber onto her wrapped forearm, one of his favorite perches. "Where did you impress Kibeth?"

"Certainly," Ircha replied to Vinsica's request, "I will alert you as soon as I know he's on his way." She highly doubted that Vinsica was the type to get in the way, so Master Nellan shouldn't have cause to object. Ircha heartily approved of anyone's desire to learn, and would step in to defend that desire, if necessary. It probably wouldn't be, as from what Ircha remembered of the man, he was fairly agreeable. She was looking forward to hearing the other Master's insights herself. Itcha was well versed in treating wing injuries, but her real passion was tinkering with tinctures and salves, so she wouldn't mind additional expertise on the case.

Vinsica didn't answer Ircha's question regarding her origin right away, and when she did, it wasn't a very expansive response. It was hard to tell if the subject made the other woman uncomfortable, or perhaps it was simply that she was laconic on non-healing topics. Ircha smiled when the Journeywoman admitted she'd had a stands Impression, or at least hadn't officially stood as candidate. It wasn't common but it did happen, and seemed to happen quite frequently to Healers, though since they were in close proximity to most Hatchings, perhaps that made sense. "You have that in common then, with Journeyman Z'del. He Impressed his grey, Jenath, at Igen in the same way. Have you met him yet?"

The conversation paused for a second, as Vinsica took a sip of her klah. Ircha refilled her own cup, starting on the third cup for the morning. That was her preferred threshold for dealing with people, although talking with Vinsica had been pleasant enough so far. The subject predictably turned to her Impression of Kibeth, which Ircha had no problem discussing. "I Impressed Kibeth at Ista, where I was born as well. I wasn't on duty for that Hatching, but I decided to attend anyways. Even after all these years, I still get excited to see what comes out each egg, and who Impresses what. I'm a shameless gambler when it comes to clutch guessing," Ircha admitted with a sheepish smile. "Anyways, Kibeth hatched and promptly rejected a perfectly good field of candidates to come pick me out ofthe stands." She shook her head the story, still uncertain why he'd felt the need to do that.

Story finished, Ircha watched as Patches climbed onto Vinsica's forearm. There was a wrapping there that she had noted when the other woman had sat down. "Are you getting over an injury?" Ircha asked, gesturing towards Vinsica's arm with her mug before taking a sip.

Faranth, she'd actually get to watch a consult. If she played her cards right, perhaps even be hands on. She had been treating Zhiarth, after all, and as much as using the gold's tragedy to advance her own education twisted the human part of her, the Healer understood the necessity. It was an unfortunate dichotomy every Healer faced at least once and became a pivotal decision in their career. Vinny's had been easy since, back then, she hadn't thought of herself as equal to the lives she trained to save. She nodded her thanks, a small smile softening the seriousness of her expression.

"I haven't had the pleasure," she regretted to say, though if Z'del was a dragonhealer, no doubt she'd run into him eventually. Thankfully her question was all that was needed to divert attention. Not that this wasn't information in Vinny's own records. There was no information before she was 11, and the several mindhealer evaluations were speculative at best. Not that Vinny had told anyone about the flashback during Lord Waryn's arrest or the familiar face among the Holdless... Ircha's story brought her back to the present, and she chuckled.

"Clearly Kibeth, Pileeth, and Jenath all had similar ideas when they hatched. Perhaps a trend for dragonhealers?" Hmm...how many of the current dragonhealers hadn't been candidates upon impressing? "In Pileeth's defense, I had turned down a Search." When Ircha was finished, Vinsica poured herself a second cup of klah, sipping it and glad for something to do when the master mentioned her forearm. She looked down at it, at Patches lying across it so casually.

"An old injury, actually. A bit disfiguring, and it can startle patients," was as smooth a half-truth as she'd ever told. Again, information readily found in her records, both as a Healer and a dragonrider, and, unfortunately, in the rumor mill thanks to the Holdless problem of a turn ago. Thank Faranth those had died down with the discovery of the South. "I keep it covered to avoid unnecessary stress for my patients."

"Hmm," Ircha murmured when Vinsica admitted she hadn't met Z'del. She'd been busy with other things, preparing for the start of Threadfall, but perhaps she needed to add a Dragonhealer meeting prior to that date as well. Meeting people over threadscored dragons wasn't the best time, and there were numerous apprentices running around now. It would be helpful if everyone could identify the others by sight, and have at least a rough of idea of their skills. Ircha made a mental note to figure out when that could be squeezed in.

Smiling at Vinsica's statement, apparently they were thinking along the same lines, Ircha nodded before adding, "I daresay most weren't. I know I found it hard to abandon my studies for Kibeth's training," Ircha said with a grimace. It had been so hard going from learning advanced techniques like bone setting to shoveling dragon poop for months. She didn't regret it, it was all part of being bonded to Kibeth, but she could easily admit it had been a difficult experience. "I wasn't Searched but my parents where both dragonriders," she further explained, and who would have thought those two would have produced someone like her? Ircha was curious as to why Vinsica had turned down her Search, but she refrained from asking since she didn't really want to talk about why she had turned down Candidacy herself.

Ircha nodded as Vinsica explained the reason for her wrapped forearm. Her record actually mentioned a Holdless brand tattooed on that forearm, which would be unsettling for some to see. Kibeth had long ago cautioned Ircha about being too direct with the things she'd learned from reading people's records. People resented it when you knew things about their past that they'd prefer not to bring up. She didn't want Vinsica to resent her. She needed people who would be willing to work with her without pettiness or anger. There was no place for interpersonal squabbles at the Infirmary. The half-truth that the Journeyman was giving her was of no consequence. Her record since joining the Healer craft was free of suspicion, not to mentioned she had Impressed a dragon, so what did it matter where Vinsica had come from?

She changed the subject, back to something it had occurred to her to ask earlier. "You mentioned that wings aren't your specialty, have you given any thought to specializing in something?"
