Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The hatching had come and gone, and Viviette's expectations had not been shattered. Four other candidates had impressed, among them Ashwyn (and what a pretty gray that dragon was!) Zahrai and the gold was a surprise that had led to much murmuring, especially since everyone knew she'd kept one of her own gold shell necklaces for herself, and then look what had happened, even if she hadn't worn it to the hatching itself. Viviette did realize after it was all over that Nalenthi and Zahrai being in the same class was probably a recipe for disaster, but it was happening across the oceans from the rest of them so any resulting stories might be a long time in getting back to them. Unless, of course, they managed to utterly destroy the settlement, but hopefully with a dragon to care for Nalenthi would be too distracted to start any more fights. Their evening in the infirmary had been enough to convince her that the now green weyrling wasn't a horrible person, but Viviette still considered her a highly reckless one. Zhiarth though...poor Zhiarth. While she was no longer moaning in agony and her wounds were healing, Viviette had ached to see the state she was in. So pale, still bound to the sands until she regained strength.

Some candidates had stayed for the feast, she was not among them. Not that she was handling the disappointment poorly, but... there were things to be done, and she wanted to do them while she had the post-decision rush of motivation. There could be food and listening to music later. If she wanted to eat at all, despite her confidence in her choice her stomach still roiled at the thought of change. No, not that much would be changing. She'd still live here. Her friends would be the same. She might even see them during chore sessions like normal if they were assigned to the infirmary! Yes, this was right.

First thing first, to inform the candidate master in a clear, strong voice that she was leaving candidacy to pursue other goals. She accomplished 50% of this. There were no tears, but there was some voice squeaking. Jillia had gently inquired as to whether she'd thought this through, but once Viviette explained that she'd spoken to Ircha some weeks ago the blue rider helped her pack up her things, and sent her off with an understanding smile. Her candidate robe was stored back into the closet with the rest of the extra stock, and Viviette was sure it would belong to someone else before long.

Now she sat on a bed in the crafter's side of the weyr, her new room closet sized, but at least it was her own, and her new knots lay in her lap. Healer's green, with an apprentice's weave, she'd really done it. Well, she'd done the easy part, now she had to learn and practice and work until she was good but...it was a first step. She'd decided first steps were nothing to be ashamed of. Instead of depressed and self-doubting like the other hatchings had left her, this time she felt... accomplished. She'd done what she'd set out to do, and given herself an opportunity, but it was time to make a way that didn't rely on chance. The newly dubbed apprentice healer smiled and allowed herself a small squeal of excitement before hurrying out to show everyone. Maybe she could find Narramir and they could finally talk. Whatever happened, she finally felt the confidence she'd always searched for.
