Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

((Set before the feline attack in the South))

Aniese had finally managed to track down a deck of cards for herself, and had paid fairly good money for it, too. The Masters were all current, and the Weyrleaders as well. Aniese found herself scowling each time Tyrene and Lorissa appeared, reshuffling them into the decks just so that she didn't have to look at their painted eyes squinting up at her.

"Dragon breath," she muttered at them, thinking instead of their real life counterparts, and the tension that embroiled every single meeting involving the pair. Tyrene was a child, with childish mannerisms, but somehow she had grabbed the High Reaches weyrwomanship for herself, so now she was even more a figure to be dealt with than she had been when she was but a junior.

Aniese sighed. Standing in her chambers flicking through her cards would get her nothing, except maybe a stomachache from worrying. She turned to her dragon.

"Rezeirth, I am going down to the Lower Caverns. Will you watch the firelizards? I don't want them making a mess of things."

Rezeirth snorted irritably. Make that Bronze of yours control the others.

She sighed. "Reze, come on. I don't have the energy for this."

Rezeirth snorted again but bowed her head, and then directed a vague thought impression toward the four lizards that were gamboling about the room. Aniese sighed again and exited her weyr, and at the least, the firelizards stayed put.

In the Lower Caverns, given that evening had fallen and dinner was done, she found sparse company but a number of games of dragon poker already going. She grimaced. She understood the game now, at least, in large part thanks to O'zen's efforts. But she didn't feel that she was very good at it; how good could you be, when so much depended on chance drawing?

"Aniese! Hey!"

Aniese turned to find M'ril sitting in the corner, nursing a goblet of wine. She smiled and moved over to him.

She and the bluerider got along amiably, and he was her most frequent company when she visited the Lower Caverns. Which she had been trying to do more, lately; the more she could relate to everyone in the Weyr, the better she could represent them and their interests. Besides, keeping to herself in her free time might make her feel more secure, but she needed social interaction; everyone did. Forcing herself to open up and trust more people might result in her getting hurt (again), but it might also lead to wonderful friendships. And she might not be as close with M'ril as she was with Rhias, but she certainly had found him to be a good friend, and she quite enjoyed his company.

There was a touch of strange dragon in her mind. Hello, Aniese. A good evening, I hope?

Aniese smiled. M'ril's blue, Notalith, was certainly charming and even if he was fond of bespeaking others in a way that Rezeirth wasn't, she'd gotten used to that quickly.

"Tell Notalith that I said hello, and that I hope it will become better with your company," Aniese replied with a coy smile.

M'ril affected a half-bow as best he could at his seat.

She felt Rezeirth touch out to the Blue, felt her shift to make room on her ledge for his arrival, and smiled again. At least Rezeirth would be socializing and keeping busy. Notalith was a pleasant dragon and Rezeirth could do with his influence-- not that she ever let herself be influenced by anyone.

M'ril began to shuffle his cards and cast her a sideways glance. "Dragon poker?"

Aniese hesitated, then gave in. "Oh, sure. Why not. I could use the practice."

M'ril's smile quirked his mouth. "Dragon poker isn't some skill to master. You know that, right? You can never truly master it, because--"

"--So much depends on chance, yes." Aniese sighed and nodded. "But that's not to say that there is no component of skill, either. So I could use the practice, yes."

"You sure you wouldn't like a drink?" He raised his goblet of white wine suggestively.

She shrugged and smiled. "You know I don't really drink."

M'ril shrugged and began to deal their hands. As he picked his cards up, he cast her a sideways look. "So, why the long face? You seem bothered by something."

Aniese picked her cards up, looked at them, and sighed again. She knew there was some luck involved here, but she couldn't help but feel rankled that her hand was so rotten. No chance to put up any cards at all. She wrinkled her nose and then looked up at him. How to explain it...?

"I've just been trying to avoid a personal nightmare in the form of diplomacy missives to the other Weyrs," Aniese said with a roll of her eyes. "Fort and High Reaches are never going to cooperate. But that's no excuse to not keep trying."

M'ril made a thoughtful hmm and drew two more cards. "Can you get any support from Benden?"

"Unlikely." Aniese thought of Mirandre, the pretty auburn-haired rider that presided over the other Weyr. "They're too close with Fort. We're cordial but if push came to shove, they'd choose Fort. Certainly when there is no issue to press them with, they'd play it safe." She scowled down at her hand and laid two cards down. There was no saving her hand.

"How about the Holds?" M'ril drew another card and then paused and looked at her, finding her eyes and holding them. "Isn't your father the Lord Holder of Big Bay?"

Aniese laughed hollowly. "Yes, but that doesn't mean anything."

"Family ties mean something," said M'ril firmly. "Why don't you explore that route?"

Aniese shrugged. "It's not so simple. My mother has half a say in everything they do, although not the appearance of it." She paused. "And... she will not capitulate to anything."

"Why is she so set on being an enemy?"

Aniese frowned thoughtfully. "I'm not sure. Ever since I was little, she's been anti-Rider. I think she must envy them their bravery or prestige, or something. I really can't think of another reason." She shrugged and laughed. "Me becoming a rider didn't help much. She and I... have had a rocky relationship for some time."

"Really?" M'ril asked, raising his eyebrows.

Aniese sighed. She'd thought that the story was common knowledge by now, but maybe it had faded in time-- and she was grateful for that, really-- by the time M'ril had transferred to Vaioa, nobody was talking about it anymore. it was still probably common knowledge, though. She smiled bitterly. "I was a very headstrong daughter, and she resented my refusal to marry and secure an alliance with some other Holder family. She's-- well-- she's just as stubborn as I am. I wanted to inherit badly, as the firstborn, but she saw fit to punish me for my contrariness and skipped me over in the line." She shrugged. "Not that it matters anyway, because I wouldn't take Big Bay even if they all died suddenly. I have Rezeirth, and she is worth more than all of Big Bay."

M'ril frowned at the story and nodded thoughtfully before discarding another card. "Well," he said cautiously, "I think that you could still try. What's the harm? Did your father resent your impetuousness?"

This gave Aniese pause, and she pulled up short, forgetting about the cards in her hand. "You know," she said after a time, "I'm not sure that he did."

"Then go to him." M'ril spread his cards out on the table and smiled. "Use your personal connection to form a strong professional one."

Aniese groaned and laid her hand out on the table as well; unsurprisingly, she lost by quite a lot. "It's not that easy. Even if he did want to listen, my mother wouldn't stand for it." She sighed and scowled down at her cards. No matter how good she was, no amount of skill could overcome a bad hand that was dealt from the start.

M'ril shrugged and let the matter drop, although Aniese could tell that he thought she should still try. As he re-shuffled the cards, she saw his brain spinning, trying to piece the puzzle together. Then he looked up and grinned. "Aniese, Rhias is your best friend, right?"

Aniese blinked at the abruptness in the change of topic. "Um, yes. Why?"

"Do you think I could meet her? Does she like dragon poker? Can you invite her to play?" At Aniese's suspicious glare, he laughed and said, "What can I say? She's beautiful and I'd love to... get to know her a bit."

Aniese narrowed her eyes at him but didn't refuse. Who knew what could happen? Maybe Rhias would enjoy herself. She'd ask tomorrow.

As M'ril began dealing out their hands again, Aniese sighed and reached out to Rezeirth gently. She found the Gold deep in conversation with Notalith. Oh, well. At least one of us is having fun. More and more, it felt like Aniese's world shrank by the minute, and her responsibilites continued to grow. The threat of ending up underwater loomed every time she sat down at her desk. No matter what, she just had to deal with the cards she had been dealt, and hope and pray that her skills would be enough to see the Weyr through.
