Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Stop hovering! I swear, you are just as bad as a broody gold! Imith chided D'lev, as he checked on his newly acquired firelizard egg for the fifth time in a single candlemark.

"I can't help it!" He exclaimed and threw his hands up. "Whatever hatches from this egg won't be like you, too overcome by my charm to possibly consider Impressing anyone else. I have to feed this thing immediately, or we could end up with a feral firelizard haunting our end of the Weyr. I don't know about you, but I doubt Mahal and Shahath would enjoy that."

Imith snorted and attempted to roll her eyes. Or at least D'lev thought that's what she was attempting to do. It was hard to tell solely by the facets of her eyes. Klah in a cup never boils. She intoned solemnly, before putting her head back down on her forearms.

Now it was D'lev's turn to snort. "Careful, that one almost made sense," he teased her playfully. The greenrider opened his mouth to ask Imith what color firelizard she thought the egg would hatch, when he noticed a sudden movement in the warming pot.

"Shells Imith! I think it's hatching now!" D'lev exclaimed, reacting to an unexpected wave of panic. "Oh Faranth! I need some meat! Where did I put the fardling meat?!"

Imith uncharacteristically ignored her rider's panic and frantic pacing, slinking half-way off her couch to put her face closer to the hatching egg. You got this, Mine! You only spent like a zillion Turns watching things hatch! She attempted to reassure him, her eyes now whirling with excitement. I guess the cup of klah does boil, eventually!

"It wasn't a zillion Turns thank you very much, it was only ten! And like I just said, this is a completely different thing! Flits are small and," D'lev paused in his panicking long enough to quirk one eyebrow at Imith sardonically and state, "delicate." The greenrider had finally managed to locate the meat and now returned to the egg pot, his panic somewhat attenuated.

Imith snaked her head back in mock outrage at D'lev's provoking slight. I am as dainty and delicate as a felis blossom! The green spouted indignantly, although her mouth was open in a draconic grin.

"Try telling me that next time I have to spend a whole candlemark scrubbing your enormous feet!" D'lev shot back without rancor, his gaze fixed on the small egg. Tiny cracks were forming all over the shell and a slight rocking motion could be detected. It wouldn't be long now till the flit finally emerged. The greenrider was actually a little nervous, beyond his fears of botching up the Impression. The egg had come from the southern continent, by way of a candidate he'd met in the water caverns one day. Nalenthi had surprised him this afternoon with the gift, claiming that she hated flits, but she still didn't want to see any left out as wherry bait either. D'lev had accepted the egg, as he'd always admired the little creatures and thought one would look really good on his shoulder, but who actually knew what would hatch out of the thing? He hadn't personally been down south yet, but stories of its weird inhabitants were currently circulating throughout Vaioa. Hopefully Nalenthi hadn't mistakenly picked up a giant tunnelsnake's egg by mistake.

The egg ceased its gentle rocking and was abruptly rent in two by its occupant. The damp creature that spilled out wasted no time in exercising his considerable lung capacity, keening noisily from hunger and uncertainty. Shakily, the flit managed to get to his feet and regarded D'lev with a curious head tilt.

Feed him! Imith reminded D'lev, who was gazing distractedly at the fragile new firelizard. He snapped out of his daze, gathered up a few chunks of meat and extended his hand slowly for the firelizard to inspect. The brown, his color more apparent as he dried off, latched on to the offering with alacrity. D'lev smiled and stroked the little creature's neck. "I think he likes m—ow! Jays!" The greenrider exclaimed when the brown suddenly nipped his thumb, looking for more to eat.

I don't think I did that when I hatched. Imith said as she stared down at the firelizard doubtfully.

"Thankfully not," D'lev replied as he patiently pried his thumb out of the little flit's mouth and replaced it with more meat chunks. "I might not have liked you if you'd done that to me." He looked up at her and winked. Like that had ever been possible.

She attempted to roll her eyes again at his comment, though it wasn't any more successful than it had been earlier. You adore me! I know it! But what about him?

"Well we've just met, and since he's only a baby, I think I can excuse his lack of manners." D'lev replied as he gazed down at the brown, who was still happily stuffing himself, although at a noticeably slower pace. "He's going to need a name."

How about Horckkt? Imith suggested, her tone a little too amused..

"I don't think I can pronounce that." D'lev responded dryly. "Dare I ask how you came up with it?"

It's the sound Ghalath made this morning when he swallowed a slightly too big chunk of herdbeast and had to hork it back up!"

"Nice, Imith. Real nice. You want to name our new friend after vomit. He hasn't done anything to you!" D'lev replied as the brown, finally replete, crawled into the crook of the rider's right elbow to sleep. The man was little surprised at the green's sudden attitude, which didn't match her normally affable personality.

Not yet The green said in a slightly sullen tone. She'd crawled back onto her couch and was flicking her tail in a displeased fashion.

"You aren't allowed to be jealous, oh green one!" D'lev told her sternly once he'd figured it out, although the man was careful to keep still so as to not disturb the new baby. "Yes, our new addition will require some of my attention. But just think of him as a new addition to your collection. He can keep you company while I'm doing boring stuff like eating three times a day or mending your straps. And if I do everything right, you won't be able to lose him like you do your shells, rocks, and other miscellaneous shaffit. "

That is true. The green conceded, her tone brightening immediately. How about Fisk? As a name?

"I like it!" D'lev agreed and smiled down at the little brown on his arm."Let's go with that."

Yay! The green exclaimed excitedly, Can he sleep in my bed tonight?

"We'll see," he responded, bemused by her sudden about face. He'd been warned that young firelizards required feedings practically constantly at first, so it was probably more prudent to keep Fisk nearby. Even if that meant waking up in the middle of the night.
