Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

This time of the turn, it was hotter outside than the weather had any right to be. V’sili was quite certain he hadn’t stopped sweating for days, save for whatever brief time he and Epolith could catch in the frequently crowded water cavern. This is how summer was: you were bathing in water or you were bathing in sweat, and it was always one or the other. It almost made him miss the time he spent in the mines, where it was always a fairly comfortable temperature no matter what season it was outside.

Almost.

Still, sluggish as he felt, the heat wasn’t quite enough the smother the buoyancy he felt while perched on Epolith’s back as the brown winged them up to their weyr. A grin broke out across his features when he saw Izaxth on the ledge, confirming that Bryn would be there—or at least hinting at the strong probability she would be there.

Chances are, she would be just as hot and sweaty as he was, but he had a little something that he thought would cheer her up. He clutched the gift in front of him in the saddle, holding onto it as if it were something precious. It was, considering how many marks he had paid for it. He was a little giddy about the purchase; coming from a family where mark-pinching was a necessity, he’d never splurged so much at one time before, especially for something so relatively useless.

Hello, Izaxth, Epolith said as he drew near, then alighted on the ledge. It is a very nice evening, is it not? V’sili could complain about the heat all he wanted, but Epolith liked it. Warmth felt nice on his hide, and it was a delight to him that the sun-baked stone of his weyrledge retained the heat of the day for a long while after Rukbat went down. He settled down with a contended sigh as soon as V’sili dismounted.

Leaving his dragon behind, V’sili strode inside, hands behind his back and a smile lighting up his muddy brown eyes. He spotted Bryn and stopped.

“I have a present for you,” he said with a little wave of his elbows to draw attention to the fact that he was hiding something behind his back. “Guess what it is?”

Being a wingsecond was tiring. Even though she'd been seeing them in action for turns she'd still somehow never managed to internalize how much actual work they did, still kind of equating their jobs with stalking about and squawking out repeated orders. True, she had done a lot of that when she'd been Al'dai's second, but there was a lot more that she had not been prepared for.

Like the sheer volumes of hidework that were now her responsibility. It was easily twice as much as she'd been responsible for as a second, and now that she was a Wingleader, she was beginning to wonder if perhaps her old wingleader had been foisting some of his own off on her, but either way she was increasingly thankful that she had taken the pains during her weyrlinghood to learn how to read. Sheets of hide were fanned out over her desk, some of the more distasteful ones even fluttering to the floor whenever she fidgeted or moved.

She was muttering to herself, whether she realized it or not. Izaxth was of the opinion that she didn't, which was both amusing and a point of concern.

"That one green needs infirmary leave," she murmured, stabbing at the dragon's name on the hide. "But we'd have to shift a few of the blues to fill her spot. Makes it all wonky. None of them are her same size..."

Bryn grunted, shifted positions in her chair for the 15th time. "Just makes a big hole in the formation! GAH!"

The woman huffed, shoving the lists of names away from her, not caring when a few more went flapping off of her desk. She was done with hidework for the day unless Talora herself personally came into her weyr and poked her in the nose with some more. Since that was unlikely to happen, she could consider herself safe.

Izaxth sometimes would announce when V'sili was coming back, but just as often she would leave it as a surprise. Bryn was paying enough attention this time to hear the sweeping of Epolith's wings, and she turned in her chair to watch what she could see of the brown land on the weyrledge.

Welcome back, the garnet crooned, lazy and content. I am enjoying the heat. My Bryn is not liking it so much.

Humans were so delicate sometimes, what with their inherent dislike of weather changes. Too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry. Couldn't they just make do, like dragons did?

Bryn's face lit up at the mention of a present, and she scrabbled from her chair with enough force to almost knock it over. She reached out and steadied it before it could clatter to the floor, a mostly second-thought kind of motion that suggested this happened with an alarming frequency.

"You got me somethin'?!" She crowed, less a question than it was an exclamation. Bryn flew across the floor to her weyrmate, and though it was hard to not just look over his shoulder and spy whatever it was, she restrained herself. "Is it...is itttttt...."

Bryn had never been good at guessing games. She was honestly a bit clueless as to whatever it was that V'sili could have brought back for her, and even more stumped about whatever something would be that she needed. Vas was a practical person that would most likely give practical gifts, as far as she knew.

"Is it...more sweetsand?" She finally hazarded, thinking back to their lessening supply in her washroom. She knew that sometimes at gathers you could buy really nice kinds that smelled like flowers or honey, but she'd never bothered to drop marks on it when the stuff that the Weyr gave her worked just fine. "Or maybe it's food!?"

She gave an excited kind of hop at the thought, earning herself an incredulous snort from her dragon. "Did you get me food?!"

Epolith laid out with a stretch that reached from his tail tips to his toes and got his bones cracking, then sank to the sun-baked ledge with a contented sigh. It feels so good, he said, laying his chin down on the stone, a low croon thrumming in his chest. I don't know why Vas doesn't like it. But he gets all sweaty and grumpy. Maybe it's because humans are so little?

The brown paused, hearing his rider laugh inside. Though, he is not grumpy right now.

Vas laughed as Bryn surged up from her chair, neatly catching it before it could topple, and hurried toward him. He nearly took a few steps back for fear that Bryn meant to look around him to see what he had brought, but she stopped in front of him. Vas grinned up at her, chuckling even more as she began working out her guesses.

The first one made his eyebrows shoot up. Sweetsand? Was that a gift that people commonly got each other? He had never thought of that. Sweetsand was more of a practical thing, he thought, not something to get all excited over. Besides, what if it sent the wrong message? Here is some sweetsand, because you smell and need to bathe more.

But if that's what women liked... he filed that knew knowledge away for later.

His grin returned with his weyrmate's next guess. Food was close! Close enough, in fact. V'sili shrugged, then whipped the bottle out from behind his back and presented it with a flourish from his free hand. "It's a... kind of food? Wine!" He turned the label so that she could see it and held it up a little higher for her to inspect.

"Look! Benden white! The fancy stuff. I got it because I wanted to congratulate you, 'cause of your promotion, and do some celebrating since things are going so well... and..." V'sili looked past her, eyeing all the hides strewn across her desk. And the floor. He felt a flash of concern. "This isn't a bad time, is it? I was wondering if you wanted to pop this open now..."

Bryn gave an impatient whine, her body taught as she waited. When she'd been a bitty girl her parents had sometimes given her gifts, like on her birthing day or whenever there had been some spare marks laying around. She'd never been gracious or patient about waiting for them, and her mother had ALWAYS been painstaking about wrapping them in order to prolong the mystery. But Bryn loved presents, and she loved Vas, so this was like a double dose of wonderful and it was so hard to wait.

But then he produced his gift, and she barked out a quick happy laugh. "Hey! Fancy stuff! Ain't I lucky!"

She took the bottle from him in order to inspect it, but even then wasn't sure why she did. It wasn't like Bryn knew anything about wine, other than that Benden's wines were supposed to be especially good. But what was 'good' wine? Did it make you drunker faster?

V'sili was talking again, and she gave the bottle back, confident that whatever he did with it would probably be more competent. As she did, she bent to press a kiss to the brownrider's cheek with a loud smeck.

"Thanks, hon," she said, cheeks flushing with the petname. They were a new thing in her vocabulary and she was still testing them out, wondering if they'd ever stop feeling foreign on her tongue.

Mention of her promotion had her eyeing her paperwork mountain once more, though the more she looked at it the more confident she was in her decision to ignore it. "Eh, it'll keep," she announced, her grin coming back in full force. "I'd much rather enjoy myself with my weyrmate. Pop whatever you please, Vas."

She snickered at her own innuendo before dropping herself into one of the chairs at their table, propping her feet up on the corner. "Wingleader of Marble Wing! Me 'n Iz always knew we were gunna lead some day, but I didn't think it'd be so soon. Or maybe I did. I dunno! It's great, though. I've got a good bunch of riders under me."

Bryn paused, and then snickered at that, too.

Vas' smile flickered back to life when Bryn kissed his cheek, but it wasn't until after she confirmed she was done with paperwork for the night that he truly relaxed. His surprise hadn't been spoiled by poor timing, then. Relieved, he chuckled, both at Bryn's pet name for him and at her wording.

"Don't mind if I do," he murmured. As Bryn pulled away, moving to one of the chairs at the table, Vas sought out a couple of glasses. After opening the wine, he poured some for both and returned to the table to sit opposite of his weyrmate, handing her a glass after he settled.

"I'm proud of you. That's quite the accomplishment." Vas grinned. "I knew you could do it, though." Oh, he might have had doubts turns earlier if someone had told him Bryn would one day lead a wing. She had been an explosive kind of girl when he first met her, prone to solving her problems with her fists. She still was explosive, but tempered somewhat, and seemed to conduct that energy in more productive ways. She wouldn't have any trouble motivating her riders, that was for sure.

Then he peered at his glass, a thin line forming between pinched eyebrows as he examined the pale liquid. "This is the nice stuff; was I supposed to let it breath first?" He'd heard that term thrown around a few times before, but honestly, he had no idea what it meant or what difference it made. So he looked at Bryn and shrugged. "Oh well."

Straightening in his seat and jutting out his chin to affect a look of mock formality, V'sili raised his glass. "Here's to you, Bryn, for being Vaioa's first garnetriding Wingleader." He paused, blinked. "...I think."

Then he twisted in his chair, hollered, "Congrats to you, too, Iz!"

"Ehn...probably not. S'not like it has lungs." Bryn found it easier to make bad jokes about the wine than to graciously accept his compliments. She was plenty proud of herself, of course, and prouder still of Izaxth - had been since she broke shell - but having someone ELSE applaud her accomplishments made a strange squirmy feeling wriggle around in her belly. She resolved to drown it in drink.

But even as she took her first sip she could still feel the tips of her ears burn, and the cheerful tango her heartbeat had taken up hadn't slowed down any by her third.

He was proud of her.

"It's too bad you couldn't transfer with me," she sighed after a moment spent appreciating the wine. "I'm gunna miss seeing you all decked out in your riding leathers."

Specifically your hindquarters, is what she's NOT saying, Izaxth teased. Bryn barked out a quick laugh at the jibe, shoulders shaking. "Well, I was TRYING to be sneaky about that. Thanks for nothing, Izz."

The garnet's smug You're welcome, Bryn, was met with a fond eyeroll, if such a thing was possible.

V'sili's toast caught her attention, though, and it set her to pondering. "Maybe not the first?" She thought out loud, worrying at her bottom lip with her teeth. "Would have to dig through records to find out." Bryn pulled a face at the thought, nose scrunching. Izaxth seemed to give a mental kind of shrug.

It is good to shake things up. The weyr's leadership was looking a little bronze for my taste.

Vas mirrored Bryn's face, wrinkling his nose at the thought of digging through musty stacks of hide in a cramped, dark room, squinting at faded writing by glow light. "Let's not do that," he said with a faint smile. "I think we can just assume. Anyway, even if there was another garnet wingleader before, it's been so long that it's still a big deal now." Besides, he couldn't read; he'd be useless in the record rooms.

Which wasn't exactly a bad thing.

"I gotta agree with you, Iz." V'sili twisted in his seat to eye the garnet dragon again. "I think Vaioa's been doing a real good job of shaking things up lately, though. A couple turns ago, who woulda ever thought of blue and green wings?" Settling back in his chair, he finally took a sip of his wine. As he savored it, he tried and failed to hold back at smile at Bryn and Izaxth's banter.

"Thanks for the clarification," he said to Izaxth after swallowing his wine. "I don't think I woulda got that on my own." He paired that with a little wink at Bryn. "I'm sad I couldn't transfer with you, but at least you can still see me beforehand. We do live together now."

It's for the best, Epolith interjected. The wing would collapse without us. His voice was smug.

"Aw, c'mon Epo, we're not that important." V'sili snorted into his cup. Then, after taking another drink, he gave Bryn a flat, almost chagrined look. "You know… I honestly can't tell the difference between this and cheap wine."

"That we dooo..." Bryn hummed, letting her words trail off as she leaned backward in her chair, stretching her back until it gave a satisfying pop! That done, she slouched lazily, the wine already pooling in her stomach and warming her blood. She had always liked to think that she'd be able to boast an ironclad tolerance for boozy things, but that had never really been the case. Maybe it was good wine because it affected you faster. It tasted slightly different from what she was used to, but it wasn't so much as to be decadent.

She was rambling inside of her own head. Kind of a pointless undertaking, when her handsome weyrmate was seated across from her and she could ogle him at will. That was easier and less self-introspective, so she settled into that instead, eyes warming.

Bryn never really got tired of looking at him. He was different now, of course, than he had been as a candidate, or even as a weyrling, but it was a good kind of different. He'd made the transition from Holder to Rider and had done a bang-up job of it, in her opinion. V'sili had only grown more and more attractive in all of the ways that she could discover, and now he was here in front her, here to stay.

You are truly a cornerstone in your wing, Izaxth allowed, perhaps playing off of her rider's smoopy mood. I'd trust your wings beneath mine any Threadflight, Epolith.

"I guess it's better because you got it for me," Bryn hazarded, her sweet-talk stilted and awkward. She'd never be a paramour, but she could make an attempt every now and then, and V'sili had been so nice to bring her something. Every now and then her mind would wander, wondering if maybe he'd prefer some soft, sweet Holder woman, who'd give him tons of babies and cook him dinner. She'd never be that, she hadn't been born OR bred for that, and that had never bothered her.

Well, sometimes it did, a little bit, when she looked at her weyrmate like this.

How much wine have you had? You're becoming maudlin, Izaxth warned, though she seemed more amused than anything else.

Am not! Have just been thinking...about...things. Bryn fired back, defiantly gulping a good bit out of her glass. And this is just my first cup!

Her dragon harrumphed in mild disbelief, but let Bryn have her head. This was a celebration, after all.

"You're so handsome," Bryn managed after a moment, clearing her throat. "I bagged myself quite the catch."

In truth, Epolith had been joking; V'sili was raised to be modest, and it was inevitable that some of that would rub off on his dragon. His smug facade dropped almost at once, but nevertheless, he thrummed with pleasure at Izaxth's compliments.

As I would trust yours above mine, he said, wiggling a little closer to the garnet.

"Ah, well, maybe." V'sili chuckled, tipping his glass to examine the contents, as if that would somehow help him discern what made this wine more expensive than the others. His lips curved in a small smile. Awkward though Bryn's sweet talk was--nothing out of the ordinary there, really--he loved to hear it. Even if she didn't quite know what to say, she was always honest.

Then his smile bloomed into a wide grin, but V'sili ducked his head, abashed, as scarlet began to creep up his throat and into his cheeks. Neither one of them had any real talent for words, but V'sili was even worse at accepting compliments--especially when they came from Bryn, when they meant so much more.

"Thanks." He rubbed the back of his neck self-conciously, but made an effort to regain his composure. After all this time, being with Bryn, he should have been less shy, more... suave, or something. The blush wasn't so easy to banish, but--Faranth--he could try.

"You, too--er--I mean--" he made a sound of exasperation in his throat, "--not handsome, but pretty." But that felt like a paltry compliment, completely inadequate. Bryn meant so much more to him than that.

"And smart, and tough, and strong, and hah, well, straightforward." V'sili shrugged. "I could go on."

Bryn's mouth twisted around in a crooked smile, not bothering to hide the gap between her two front teeth. "I think I like being called handsome," she admitted with a chuckle. The words 'pretty' or 'beautiful' had never applied to her in Bryn's own estimation - she was too tall, had too many muscles, too many angles and hard edges where she should have been soft and pliant. But it seemed that V'sili didn't mind just as much as she never really had, and that warmed places in her that hadn't been touched since Izaxth hatched.

But then he just kept talking, and her smile faltered in surprise, tentative embarrassment sketching across her face. Smart? She wasn't sure that anyone had ever thrown that word her way. She hadn't even known how to read or write until she'd become a weyrling, and if she hadn't impressed a Garnet she might never have bothered at all. Bryn quickly finished the last gulp of wine in her glass and settled it shakily on the table.

"Vas," she croaked, the legs of her chair scraping on the stone floor as she slid roughly from it, advancing on her weyrmate. She tangled her fingers in his hair on the sides of his head, gazing heatedly down at his face as her jaw worked like it was trying to figure out the words it wanted to say.

"You think I'm all that...stuff?" Bryn managed, skirting one of her thumbs along his jawline.
