Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

(Fuzzytimed to just before the Southern transfer)

Al'dai paced restlessly in the entrance to the council room, mind spinning. He felt equal parts regret and relief. He had never been a regular Wingrider; he'd been promoted to Wingsecond upon graduation, and Wingleader after that. The thought of passing the title on to another felt strange, and strangely lonely. But he had thought it through, and it was the only option. No, not just that; it was what he wanted.

Between keeping some pathetic vestige of his title and leaving it to his Wingsecond to do the actual leading of the wing, or between leaving it all behind and trying to heal his body and become a proper rider once again, there was simply no contest. Talking with Merilla had helped him realize this, and had in fact confirmed his belief that he was making the right choice. He just had to begin the process now.

He would not go before the council. In his case, he was no longer medically fit to fulfill his position. He should have been discharged long ago, and perhaps if he had not recovered as well as he had, enough to still do the administrative duties required of him, then the Council would have replaced him sooner. But it was time to take matters into his own hands.

He had asked Lerouth to summon Pontuth and S'ssurnt to the Council Room this morning. And now he waited. Do you think he will take the news well? Do you think he will want the position?

Lerouth answered slowly, thoughtfully. I suppose I do not know, but I cannot imagine he will turn it down.

Some people do not like to lead.

S'ssurnt has enough leadership experience that he will be competent. And he will know this. I think he will accept.

Al'dai hoped the Bronze was right. After all, S'ssurnt wouldn't really have much other choice.

You mean you're eating your breakfast out here?

S'ssurnt smirked at the massive bronze as he ate from his tray whilst still walking up to the beast. Sure! I figured it'd be a nice change of pace from the norm. Nothing wrong with changing things up every once in a while, right?

I'm surprised you aren't trying to flirt.

S'ssurnt snorted. I don't flirt! I just like to keep up on the well being of my compatriots, is all!

Finally having reached his dragon, he leaned up against the warm bulk as he continued his meal. You wouldn't know what flirting looked like if a shining green waltzed right up to you and crooned to you about how handsome you are.

Why would a green do that... or me, for that matter?

Point proven, now- S'ssurnt stopped mid thought as he sensed a sudden shift in demeanor from the bronze. He had been taking his teasing in stride, as he always did, but S'ssurnt felt that there was indeed a sudden change in the bronze's mood in the back of his mind. Is something wrong?

Pontuth's voice was lower in tone than before and laced with confusion when he responded. Lerouth and his summon us to the council room.

"What?" S'ssurnt couldn't help but say this aloud, seemingly just as perplexed about the summons as his dragon did. "Interesting... what does Wingleader Al'dai want with us?"

You didn't annoy anyone too badly recently, did you?

"I don't think I've ever annoyed anyone enough to warrant being scolded by the Wingleader in the council room."

That is an odd location in any case. Guess all we can do...

"Is go and find out what he wants..."

S'ssurnt did regret having to leave his meal partially unfinished, having gone back into the dining hall for just a brief moment to set his tray down, though he did notice that he had made some firelizard very happy. The walk across the Weyrbowl from the dining hall to the entrance to the council room was brisk (he didn't want to keep Al'dai waiting, after all!).

Indeed, Al'dai was already waiting outside the entrance as he approached. "Greetings, Wingleader Al'dai!" He greeted with a proper salute, with a voice perhaps too perky given the occasion or given his own bemusement about the summons. To his credit, he did tone it down when he spoke as he got to the other bronzerider's side, "so, what did you need to see us about?"

He is approaching from the Weyrbowl, Lerouth informed Al'dai.

The man stopped pacing just in time. He returned S'ssurnt's salute smartly, and then indicated the interior of the council room. "Good morning. Please, come in."

He did not immediately answer S'ssurnt's question, instead taking his time to limp over to a chair with the help of his cane, and then sit as lightly as he could. He turned and smiled tightly up at the other bronzerider.

"You've noticed by now, no doubt, that my injuries are very slow in healing. It seems as if I have reached a plateau." He indicate dthe council room again. "While they do not prevent me from completing the, ah, administrative side of my duties, they have prevented me from flying since I received them. And it appears as though that is not going to improve any time soon."

Al'dai inhaled deeply. There was no going back. "S'ssurnt, I am retiring. I can no longer complete the duties required of me as a Wingleader. I need to focus on my health. If there is any hope of me being able to fly again, the Masterhealer believes that it will come from moving to the Southern climate. So I am transferring."

The words felt right, but they still left him feeling slightly hollow inside. Change was hard, after things had been one way for so long. He cleared his throat. "I would like you to take over as Wingleader of Sandstone when I make my resignation official. The Council will likely approve my preferred candidate. You have been in Sandstone leadership long enough now that I feel you are the safest and strongest choice for the wing."

The wing, yes. That was what he had to think about. It was nonsense that he'd allowed them to fly into Threadfall without a proper leader as long as he had. When he had led the wing, there had been a time when Sandstone had the lowest rate of injury out of all of the wings of Vaioa. Hopefully, S'ssurnt could restore them to their previous standards. At the least, he seemed to be the most capable choice, and the most likely to lead his wing to a safe and successful future.

You are making the right decision, said Lerouth reassuringly as he sensed his rider's wavering confidence. This is really the only option we have left. The riders in the wing will be much safer once the wing structure is reorganized.

S'ssurnt gave a polite nod to his Wingleader when the other man told him to go in. He formally took a seat on one side as Al'dai took a seat across from him. The short bronzerider couldn't help but feel bad for Al'dai. After all, S'ssurnt had once been taken out of action for a chunk of time thanks to an injury, and he still bore a scar that sometimes ached. But at least he had recovered and returned to full action. Al'dai, who had been working behind the scenes for so long thanks to his injuries, didn't seem to be quite so lucky.

Maybe that's what this is about, S'ssurnt thought to himself as Al'dai carefully took his seat. Maybe he's bumping his Wingsecond and Wingthird up for his own sake. Does he want me to be Wingthird, then? S'ssurnt hadn't truly thought about the idea of being promoted, even though, as a bronzerider, he had to be prepared to lead in the event Pontuth ever caught the senior queen, regardless of previous experience or lack thereof.

Al'dai spoke, and confirmed at least part of his suspicions. "I've only heard things about the South... but I'm sure the Masterhealer is right. If there's a chance to help you recover, I'm all for it." Perhaps S'ssurnt was known as someone who wasn't normally all that serious, but the truth was he cared deeply for all of his compatriots, and knowing about Al'dai's arduous recovery made his heart ache ever so slightly.

The next thing out of Al'dai's mouth certainly caught S'ssurnt by surprise, and he quickly had to temper his emotion so that he didn't look like a fool and perhaps make the other man regret his decision. But it was surprising; after all, their Wingsecond had already been acting as leader during Falls and drills, so it didn't quite make sense that Al'dai would choose someone not already leading to replace him as Wingleader.

Lerouth's must trust you more. Pontuth stated simply, his voice unfazed as it usually was.

S'ssurnt smiled lightly, and nodded as he accepted Al'dai's decision. "Al'dai, sir... thank you for your trust. By the shells and shards of Pontuth's egg, I promise I won't betray it."

Al'dai smiled drily at S'ssurnt's response. "It's not me that you need to worry about betraying," he said simply. "It's the trust of your wingriders. Just... keep them safe." Al'dai closed his eyes in regret. If only.... If only he had done this sooner. If only he had recovered enough to actually help them.

Do not regret. This is the best decision to make at this time, counciled Lerouth wisely. Now we can move forward.

Al'dai knew, deep down, that Lerouth was right. He sighed, and then stood and smiled bracingly. "Very well. I shall announce my resignation to the Council, and recommend you as my successor. I am confident that you will be approved." He nodded at the other rider. "Be well, S'ssurnt."
