Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Vyra smiled at the memories. Well, even in whatever unhappiness had transpired at Fort, she'd found happiness being Sygnet's friend. Changing location didn't have to change that.

At least, lost and homeless though I may be, I still have her. The girl gazed back at Sygnet fondly before taking a swig of her wineskin. And Theteth.

Thanks for remembering me, the Grey responded, though she was joking.

Vyra's eyes widened and she looked up at Sygnet again. "Ah! M'taiki! He's in our wing! I've actually met him." She fell silent, musing. "Actually, he's pretty much the only one I've properly met," she mumbled. Then she looked back up and grinned. "He does seem nice. Caught your eye, has he?"

She snorted at Sygnet's question. "Please. As if I've had any inclination to take any of these riders to bed." It wasn't that she was opposed to the general idea of bedding an attractive rider, but Vyra hardly knew the names of all of her wingmates, let alone anyone else. She knew that there was no relationship implied there, but even casual sex required some sort of feeling on Vyra's part, whether it was actual interest or just eagerness. Vyra had felt nothing remotely akin to that, with anyone here.

Though maybe she should try to get to know some of the riders and see what was on tap... She supposed she had been more than a little standoffish in general, looking back on it. She smiled reluctantly and shook her head.

"I'm sure that, whenever Theteth Rises next, I'll find someone or other."

Theteth cracked a draconic grin at Salubuth's comment. We must be, she agreed. Everyone from Fort and High Reaches and Benden seems nice. I don't know, though. Some of the ones from Vaioa do seem nice, too. She thought about this. What do you think about all of the rumors about the Southern continent?

Sygnet grinned bashfully. “I don't know about 'caught my eye', but he's nice enough and he took the time to check on me, which is more then most of the wing has done. We'll see what happens in the future.” Vyra's response was half-expected, though they had very different ideas on the proper way of meeting people. “At least learning names before the flight happens could be good too, you know, so they're only 99% stranger by then.” She wouldn't insist her friend do anything out of her comfort zone though, not when they were still new. No need to push.

I think it sounds like a horrible place. Beasts and dragon sized wherries and tunnelsnakes, I don't know how anyone is living there. Salubuth exclaimed, an overenthusiastic response to Theteth's simple question. Sygnet wants to visit for the hatching, if visitors are allowed, but there's enough new things at Vaioa for me, and nothing that wants to kill everyone.

Sygnet rolled her eyes toward their dragons. “Are you planning on going? To the hatching, I mean. I'd like to see a Vaioan hatching, I'm curious to see if their difference in color dynamics changes how the hatchings feel.” It may not, every weyr treated a hatching as a joyous occasion, but she thought there may be different levels of joyous to be discovered. “Oh! I, um, actually have been working on a song for upcoming hatchings. I'm not that talented, but it was a nice little ditty...” If there was anyone Sygnet would trust to give her honest feedback on her creative works it was Vyra. Her friend wouldn't hold back, if it was awful she'd be sure to keep Sygnet from embarrassing herself later in front of everyone.

Sygnet coughed, preparing her throat. She had no instrument, but for this her voice would do.

”If home is but a word,
then you my dear, define it.
If love is but a song,
then you my dear, inspire it.
From hatching day,
'Till threads away,
we'll fight with friends beside us.
And in it all,
through every fall,
keep our bond inside us.”

Her voiced faded away, and she looked to Vyra for feedback. “I'm not sure about that last line, but I also can't think of anything else that would fit.”

Vyra smiled sardonically. "And risk awkward meetings the next day? Sometimes it's better to keep them strangers." Not that she was particularly inclined to intimacy with strangers. Vyra knew that some riders liked that, unabashedly. She did not and likely would not. But that particular need had been long diminished for some time, eclipsed by the greater need for a basic sense of belonging. She sighed and took a hearty swig from her wineskin, savoring the earthy notes.

Her eyes flickered back up to Sygnet and she managed an ugly laugh. "It's not really a Vaioan hatching, is it? The queen is from Ista. Igen. Somewhere." She shrugged expressively. "I don't care, to be honest. It sounds like a small settlement to begin with, and I'm not sure how much room they'll have for spectators." She paused. "I'm not opposed to it, but to be frank, I don't really care that much."

She fell silent to listen to Sygnet sing, and closed her eyes. A small, peaceful smile spread over her face. When her friend finished, she looked up again.

"I think it's lovely. Put it to a floor harp if you can, it would sound precious. Like a new bond between Weyrlings."

Theteth chuckled at the conversation. Vyra thinks it sounds horrible too. I think it sounds interesting. I've never seen a jungle before. Vyra says that I couldn't fit in the jungle, but I would like to at least see it. She paused and listened in on the riders. Yes, there's plenty new here at Vaioa, she finished, with a slightly resentful note. She did wish that Vyra would warm up to their new home a bit more.

Sygnet smiled, a touch sadly, at Vyra's response. “If I go I'll tell you if anything interesting happens, if you look hard enough there's always something happening.” That was what the Fort harper had told her many a time. “But, and not that I'm one to talk if we're honest, it might be good for you and Theteth to get out a little. Maybe not to anyplace within Vaioa, but we should take a day trip somewhere soon. Escape all this for a little while.” She subconsciously mimicked Vyra and took a swallow of wine, slaking a thirst not for drink but for sociability. Helping her friend was rising on her priority list with every jaded note that Vyra let slip. It may have been hypocritical, but she wanted the grey rider to be happy.

“I need to find where they keep the instruments for borrowing here, I haven't hunted down the local harper yet. Haven't had the time, or the energy. But now that I have a real reason, I won't put it off much longer.” Sygnet nodded, satisfied with Vyra's reaction. No cringing was what mattered, it wasn't something that would get popular but maybe it would catch in someone's head. If even one weyrling felt welcomed by the song, she'd be pleased. Given that all her training had been in-house she couldn't help for much else.

“I'd like a reason to celebrate, no matter whose queen it actually is.” The blue rider said wistfully. “Even as a candidate, the gathers, the dances, those were fun. I didn't get too involved, but I'd watch from the sidelines.” It had all changed once they'd Impressed. Weird to think it was only two turns ago, it might have been a lifetime.

She leaned across the table and gently pushed Vyra's shoulder, a small rebuke for her pessimism. “Which cycles back around to what I said. Day trip, somewhere. It's nearly turn's end, I bet we could fly in for another hold's gather.”

I've heard it's very green. But not Fort tree green, they said...lime green? And sometimes other colors that bright. But also dark and scary. The doubt in his voice expressed his opinion on all of these possibilities, and the difficulty he had imagining such a place. I like the idea of a gather though, let's go somewhere fun instead! There might be nice people and stories. He twisted his tail to thump Theteth's eagely. You can come too, it's guaranteed to be nice if we're all together!

Vyra smiled crookedly at Sygnet's words of gentle rebuke. Yes, new dragonets were a cause to celebrate, no matter where they came from. Ever important to replenish Pern's main fighting force, which was unfortunately prone to getting mowed down via Threadfall on all too frequent occasion. No, Vyra wouldn't reject that notion; new Weyrlings were a good thing. But she didn't see any particular reason to rejoice just because they were going to be Vaioan Weyrlings. Interesting that a foreign Queen was donating her clutch, but such Weyr politics were beyond the scope of her understanding or interest. No doubt they'd worked out some sort of arrangement. It was intriguing, though. Had Igen demanded a share in the South? Was there anything valuable down there worth sharing in, anyway?

She shrugged. "I suppose a celebration would be welcome, I grant you that. It just feels like so long since we've had a reason." The last time she had truly enjoyed a celebration had been her class's graduation-- but even then, it had been tainted with the Fort reaction. 'Now that the freak hatchlings are full dragonriders, they will begin breeding.' Normally, she would have expected to join the ranks of the adult riders as an equal. But there was no doubt that they had continued to be apart from the rest of the group.

That was one good thing about Vaioa, Vyra had to acknowledge. They weren't treated as freaks, separate from the rest of the population of adult riders. They were equals, despite their apparently strange lineage, and despite being transfers. Vyra may not have gotten to know many Vaioans yet, but at the least, she didn't feel purposely excluded any longer due to the parentage of her dragon.

"Maybe we could go find a Turn's End Gather, somewhere," Vyra murmured thoughtfully. "Maybe Vaioa puts on a good one, too." It was time to think about celebrating, she supposed. Time to make a tentative effort, see if Vaioa really could be a better home than Fort.

I want to see a Gather in the South, Theteth insisted stubbornly. I don't know about all of the colors, but Vyra said there are fires right on the beach. Maybe not in the jungle, she amended, but then there will be swimming and all sorts of fun things. She paused, and cocked her head. Maybe we should see a Southern Gather and a Northern one!

While it wasn't the most enthusiastic agreement Sygnet had ever heard, it was better then nothing. If she could get Vyra to a gather, any gather, maybe things could improve from there. She suspected her friend was remembering the last event their class had attended at Fort before being unceremoniously tossed out as transfers. Even as the bonfires had been lit and people danced the paperwork on the graphite and black dragons' moving was probably being processed.

"We could stay here if you wanted to." Sygnet agreed, keeping that ball in Vyra's court. She'd be fine with any location, as long as they could concentrate on something other then the dismal nature of the past turn, and instead focus on what could come in the months ahead. "I don't know what the local traditions are, but we could ask someone. I heard about some small holds that do thinks like... catch greased calves, or bake marks into pies." Not that Vaioa was a small hold, but at Fort their reputation was that of the strange relative who you were never sure what they'd do. Most of the stereotype had turned out to be false, but they hadn't seen all of Vaioan life yet.

Salubuth listened to Theteth, his resistance to the idea of a southern trip eroding in the face of her insistence. Maybe... was his initial agreement, which quickly became something less wishy-washy when the grey suggested continent hopping. Salubuth's natural tendency toward being easily persuaded worked this once in his rider's favor, swimming and cavorting on the beach sounded a little fun...

Theteth may have the right idea, we have wings, there's no reason to limit ourselves to once place. He finally announced to both riders after his train of thought reached the station his friend had aimed it towards. They're in different times? He asked Sygnet, now that he'd decided that's what they'd do the 'how' stumped him.

"They do have a point, North and South are hours off, so we could attend one without missing the other." Sygnet smiled, a real smile with no hint of the sadness that had tinged her mood when she'd first arrived. "You can't go back on me now, who else could be a decent gather buddy? I trust you not to get so drunk that you'll throw up in my lap halfway through, the rest of these people, who knows."

With something in the future to look forward to planned, Sygnet's spirits lifted, and already she was calculating how many sevendays it would be until their outing. She took a long drink of wine, and settled in to enjoy the rest of the day with Vyra. They'd be alright, leaning on each other and learning about their new home, things would be okay.
